Terminus

Seventeen years had passed since their admission, supine, hands clasped. The moment paused and rewound so many times it has begun to slip and slur. Yet it remains solid, holding down everything from that time, forward. It is the ground to which any path may be traced.

It is far from nothing.

They were alone, their easy banter quickly escalating to hysteria. It was cast. He pressed his words between their laughter, hoping that the weight of their meaning may be buoyed by the mirth of the spell. As he had hoped, they had caught her off guard. And, she swallowed her response, continuing to laugh as if what he said was part of the folly.

It is easier to disbelieve.

Then he turned to her and she found the truth in his eyes. He wanted to take it back; he did take it back. While she held her breath and hoped that she could find her words, and that they wouldn’t sound ridiculous in the wake of her stay, he had let his words disintegrate.

The moment was gone.

In an instant, fear can consume you. It can make you refrain from disclosure, from the truth. You may hold your tongue or reel in its wag. Once it is fixed, fear can thrive in you for years, feeding off of regret, recycling into a fierce energy…anger.

It can destroy.

Or you may gain experience, chalk it up to another missed cue. You can allow yourself to forgive, provide another the opportunity to atone. Understand that when acknowledged, fear can guide you. You can turn it around and fear can provide additional strength to push you beyond previous expectations, to rise above limitations.

What has become of them?

Over 2500 miles travelled between the lines, their lives. They both stand as a movable marker for a moment, a slide rule for a decision. They are not broken, but both are damaged. Each has a life filled with family, friends, knowledge, achievements, and failed attempts. Of course, there is a portion of their lives of which the other is aware, a fraction that they speculate. But, neither knows that the other will occasionally recall that moment, reflecting on, but never regretting, its purpose.

Don Henley End Of Innocence Lyrics
Send "End Of Innocence" Ringtone to your Cell
Remember when the days were long

And rolled beneath a deep blue sky

Didn't have a care in the world

With mommy and daddy standin' by

But "happily ever after" fails

And we've been posisoned by these fairy tales

The lawyers dwell on small details

Since daddy had to fly

But I know a place where we can go

That's still untouched by men

We'll sit and watch the clouds roll by

And the tall grass wave in the wind

You can lay your head back on the ground

And let your hair fall all around me

Offer up your best defense

But this is the end

This is the end of the innocence

Anonymous said...

O' beautiful, for spacious skies

But now those skies are threatening

They're beating plowshares into swords

For this tired old man that we elected king

Armchair warriors often fail

And we've been poisoned by these fairy tales

The lawyers clean up all details

Since daddy had to lie

But I know a place where we can go
And wash away this sin

We'll sit and watch the clouds roll by

And the tall grass wave in the wind

Just lay your head back on the ground

And let your hair spill all around me

Offer up your best defense

But this is the end

This is the end of the innocence

Good Morning

Well woke up to a snow covered ground. Will Spring ever come?

Like Welshie I'm finding it so difficult, so heartbreaking to watch the news about Japan.

Take care, everyone.

TAKAJO, Japan – A tide of bodies washed up along Japan's coastline, crematoriums were overwhelmed and rescue workers ran out of body bags as the nation faced the grim reality of its mounting humanitarian, economic and nuclear crisis Monday after a calamitous tsunami.

Millions of people were facing a fourth night without water, food or heating in near-freezing temperatures in the devastated northeast.

Meanwhile, a third reactor at a nuclear power plant lost its cooling capacity, raising fears of a meltdown, while the stock market plunged over the likelihood of huge losses by Japanese industries including big names such as Toyota and Honda.

A Japanese police official said 1,000 washed up bodies were found scattered Monday across the coastline of Miyagi prefecture. The official declined to be named, citing department policy.
The discovery raised the official death toll to about 2,800 but the Miyagi police chief has said that more than 10,000 people are estimated to have died in his province alone, which has a population of 2.3 million.

In one town in a neighboring prefecture, the crematorium was unable to handle the crush of bodies being brought in for funerals.

"We have already begun cremations, but we can only handle 18 bodies a day. We are overwhelmed and are asking other cites to help us deal with bodies. We only have one crematorium in town," Katsuhiko Abe, an official in Soma, told The Associated Press.
Friday's double tragedy has caused unimaginable deprivation for people of this industrialized country — Asia's richest — which hasn't seen such hardship since World War II. In many areas there is no running water, no power and four- to five-hour waits for gasoline. People are suppressing hunger with instant noodles or rice balls while dealing with the loss of loved ones and homes.

"People are surviving on little food and water. Things are simply not coming," said Hajime Sato, a government official in Iwate prefecture, one of the three hardest hit.

He said authorities were receiving just 10 percent of the food and other supplies they need. Body bags and coffins were running so short that the government may turn to foreign funeral homes for help, he said.

It's beyond tragic and heartbreaking. :(

good morning!

With hopefully less rain, flooding, panic and stress than I had yesterday.

elena said...

Good morning, Ergo

Wish I could offer to trade you my weather for yours but I really don't think you would want the rain/snow mix we have.

ergoproxy said...

HI elena!
it's still raining today but yesterday we got about 4 inches in less than an hour and as the ground is soaked it all runs off, all the creeks were up and there was water flowing across the road everywhere.
Do you still have snow? Is it lots?

elena said...

We got about 3 inches of snow overnight but it was those big, fluffy flakes. Very pretty, really. Luckily it didn't really stick to the road because of the temp. Now it's just raining with a bit of snow mixed in.

That's a lot of rain you got in such a short time. Was the flooding bad?

ergoproxy said...

For that period of time it was, the bridge near our house had water over it, it's usually about 8meters to the water. There was a lot of water over roads but not deep a few inches, just flowing.
Friends had to get someone else to take their kids and another friend is stuck at their house as their causeway washed away, they were going to try to cut a fence and get through to their neighbours.

elena said...

Wow that would be scary. So is it better now?

Seriously? You read all that about what's going on in Japan and your focus is your "rain, panic and stress"?

Twat.

ergoproxy said...

yes, it is rainy but not like that, though it wasn't anything we expected yesterday.
Road must be ok too as hubby didn't call to say otherwise, lots of potholes to dodge though.
We don't have any warnings anymore which is good.
I'll be watching it though!

elena said...

Glad to hear you have no warnings. Hopefully the rain will stop for a while. I sure wouldn't want to drive over that bridge.

ergoproxy said...

No, 2 people did that I saw, in 4WD it went down after about an hour but there was so much debris on the bridge.
People forget about that, or that the bridge might be damaged, or that a surge might come down.
So many people have died trying to cross flooded roads since we've had all this rain in the state.
They have radio and tv ads to try and stop them trying.

You'd probably have the same thing with snow and ice

elena said...

People take foolish risks not stopping to think what can happen. The biggest problem we have with the snow and ice is people continue to drive at normal speeds never thinking about how hard it may be to stop. Not long ago KC made national news with a video of a car sliding down an hill sideways. That would def be a "Oh shit" moment for the driver.

ergoproxy said...

Holy cow!
A very big "Oh shit" moment!
People don't drive to conditions and it's awful when you are and they act like idiots to try and get past you.

elena said...

Yep, I really love it when the road is covered in snow and they pass you talking on a cell phone. Oh, and they glare at you as they drive by. LOL

ergoproxy said...

Heard from my friend they have to drive through their neighbours, they have a 3foot drop in their driveway. I suggested they rig up a flying fox. I'd say this weekend we might be helping them out.

Anonymous said...

Awww poor babies. You might have to drive through rain. OH NO.

Jesus H Christ have a little sympathy and please have a huge helping of PERSPECTIVE.

Anonymous said...

10:24, you always were so (sym)pathetic.

Anonymous said...

Actually YES, I always have been sympathetic to the people here. I've always tried to offer words of encouragement and comfort. But people don't want to take them. They'd rather whine about how bad their weather is and how inconvenient their lives are and OH HELL MAYO why don't you talk to me anymore?

So I gave up. No one wants to hear words of encouragement here, they just want to wallow and ask for attention of the "special" people.

And now this horrible thing happens in Japan and these people are like "Oh I had a flood POOR ME".

Christ.

It's disgusting, I give up. Wallow.

Japan's nuclear crisis deepened dramatically Tuesday.
As safety officials sought desperately to avert catastrophe, the government said radioactive material leaking from reactors was enough to "impact human health" and the risk of more leaks was "very high."

:(

Anonymous said...

"It's like a horror movie," said 49-year-old Kyoko Nambu as she stood on a hillside overlooking her ruined hometown of Soma, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) from the plant. "Our house is gone and now they are telling us to stay indoors
.
"We can see the damage to our houses, but radiation? ... We have no idea what is happening. I am so scared."

Nuclear power

Do the risks outweigh the benefits?

Anonymous said...

12:00, everyone has crises or troubles or, yes, tragedies happen in their lives. Yes, the earthquake/tsunami in Japan was horrific. People are doing what they can to help. Meanwhile, the rest of us go through our daily lives, be that flooding, sickness, fire, death, etc. Just because someone's having a fucked-up day doesn't mean they've forgotten the bigger picture. You just have to deal with what hits closer to home for you at the time it's happening.

Ergo had a frightening experience. She reacted to it. She's ok, luckily, but it could've been so much worse.

Welshie said...

6:27/10:24/12:00. I think what you said to Ergo was very harsh. She wasn't complaining about just a bit of rain but actually driving through floods. It really can be very scary and dangerous. A few weeks ago a mate of mine drowned in floodwaters and I know that might seem irrelevant compared to the thousands of people in Japan who've lost their lives, but he was my friend and I miss him. His life was just as precious.

12:00 I'm sorry you felt that no one here appreciated your words of encouragement and comfort. Please don't give up. I hope I haven't made you feel that way, if I have then I apologise.

Welshie said...

Ergo I saw the photo of the bridge you posted. You be careful now ok. Keep safe.

ergoproxy said...

Thanks welshie and 2:05

earlier anon, please rest assured in the knowledge you make no difference to me whatsoever.

Welshie it has eased off a lot today, fortunately the water drains off quickly once the rain stops. I have never seen the bridge go over, last time was during the night with one of our last cyclones.
I don't take risks with it, seen too many incidents like the one that tragically took your friend.
Thanks for your concern, hopefully the bad weather is past for a while.

Found out earlier tonight too that a previous exchange student, who lives in Hong Kong but who has extended family in the Miyagi Prefecture has managed to locate all her relatives, including her 100+ year old grandmother and they are safe and well though some have suffered the loss of homes. A great blessing for her.

hope you have a great Tuesday :]

elena said...

Good Morning

Thank you 2:05 anon for your words. Your understanding is most welcome. Yes, what has and is happening in Japan is tragic. Our hearts go out to them but we still have to go on with our lives. I'm not sure why anyone could not have understood Ergo's concern for her family and friends. Flooding can be devastating as Welshie well knows. And Welshie, I'm sorry that this brought up sorrow for your lost friend.

Well an new day is here. Stay safe everyone.

NUCLEAR POWER?

Worth the risks or not?

Thoughts? Anyone have any thoughts about that?

Anonymous said...

Anyyyyyyone who or whomsoever?

Welshie said...

Wish I could give an opinion anon but I don't really know enough about nuclear power to be honest. Sorry.

life IS beautiful said...

It's so easy to agree on the non radioactive subjects isn't it?

So easy for all of us to agree that life is beautiful.

Why is so difficult to discuss the really controversial and important things?

Not even discuss them. Just give an opinion. Give voice to your feelings. Take a stand for what you believe in or what you stand against. Not that hard.

Nuclear power.

What is your opinion? Worth it or not?
For, against or undecided?

Anonymous said...

At least you acknowledged the subject Welshie and admitted that you do not have enough information to form an opinion you would feel comfortable with sharing.

life IS beautiful said...

I am undecided leaning heavily toward against.

I don't think it's worth the risks.

The risks to all life on this earth and to earth herself.

I'm going to have to choose natural gas, oil and electricity over nuclear power.

I have to choose nature or man made.

life IS beautiful said...

^over man made

Anonymous said...

Coal is good too. Mother earth provides that and oil and gas.

So is solar energy and wind power.

The more I think about it and the more I think about all of those innocent people in Japan, especially the children, the more I am against nuclear power.

life IS beautiful said...

It's not just alternative energy sources we need to seek.

It's not a nuclear revival that we need.

We need to maintain, protect and use to their full capacity the nuclear power plants that we already have. Not build more.

What we need to do is teach people to be less selfish. We need to spend those millions on education. On conservation.

We need to pound into our children and the children of yesterday and tomorrow that mother Earth has a limited amount of resources. (Just like your local grocery store and home depot.)

Once those resources are all used up they are gone and they are gone for good.

We must conserve and we must try to replenish what we have already taken from mother earth.

Conservation. Selflessness. Sacrifice. Global awareness. Replanting. Replenishing.

We must teach those things to our children.

That is what I think.

life IS beautiful said...

I feel so much better after letting that all out.

Have a nice day. :)

Welshie said...

I'm undecided about wind turbines. On the one hand I think it's a good idea to make use of renewable resources then again there's a local farmer who wants to build over a hundred on top of the mountain behind my house. Now this is certainly not a case of NIMBY but from what I've been told they don't produce much energy, so would it be worth the vast amount of money spent on building them and actually getting them to the top of the mountain. Also you have to look at the aspect of destroying the beautiful landscape.

ergoproxy said...

hi again.

Hi welshie

Current nuclear power, probably against any more of it. Thorium instead is more attractive but not yet practical. Fusion would be excellent but as yet unavailable for power.
Geothermal and Hydro are good but limited in the areas which can use them.
Solar and wind is more practical and cheaper in areas that can support it, but is still a huge initial outlay that most governments aren't keen on and uses up space and aren't the most attractive things.

Welshie said...

I agree with 7:56. I'm a recycling freak. There's so much waste in the world and it drives me mad!

You have a nice day too anon. It's bedtime for me so I'll have a nice snooze.

Cheerio.

Anonymous said...

Is it your money he'll be spending or his own or tax payers dollars?

Do windmills really destroy the beauty of the landscape or do they add to the beauty?

Is a wind turbine really that offensive to your eye or could you get past that if the knowledge gained could help future generations?

Would you be willing to give up your old literal view for a new view if it could benefit others for decades to come?

Those are questions you and the people of your community need to ask yourselves.

Anonymous said...

Windmills have inspired artists and poets for centuries.

I think they're beautiful in so many ways.

Anonymous said...

We shouldn't forget about the power of water and wheels or water turbines either.

Anonymous said...

I forgot. It's so easy to do.

Welshie said...

Oh god haven't a clue what you're on about sorry Ergo. Thorium, fusion?

8:22. We already have a lot of wind turbines here. I'm not opposed to them at all, in fact I can see 3 when I look out of my kitchen window. I think they can be quite beautiful. When they're turning gently in the wind it can be quite mesmerizing. This man though wants to build over a 100. It's not the amount that worries me but how the hell he's gonna get them there. They're talking of making new roads up to the top of the mountain. So much wildlife is going to be destroyed by building these roads, and it would involve cutting down many trees so I have to ask myself would it be worth it? There's an awful lot of discussion going on in my community at the moment. I need to listen to both sides before I decide if I'm for or against these wind turbines.

Have to put the lights out now. I'm going to bed.

Ta ra.

ergoproxy said...

Welshie Thorium is a by all accounts a safer, more abundant but less efficient with current reactors alternative to uranium, and fusion is the other type of nuclear reaction, uses hydrogen, would be cheaper, creates far more power, no dangerous wastes but can't at the moment be used as it releases too much energy to be controlled effectively for power generation.

I agree with you about the wind turbines, it's a big environmental change to the area if the output isn't going to make a significant difference.
Be interested to see how the town discussions go and if he gets the go ahead.

sweet dreams

March 15, 2011 8:27 PM

I totally agree anon but there is a huge difference between one of
these and this

The first windmill is called Melin Llynnon on Anglesey. Every summer me and my sisters ride our bikes over to the mill and call in the quaint little coffee shop in the house next door to it. It's a working mill and they make their own flour for the bread and cakes. Absolutely scrumptious:)

There used to be over 30 working windmills on the island and I would love to be able to afford one of the converted windmills. I can seriously see myself living here

Anonymous said...

Thanks for answering the nuclear power question & discussing alternative energy Ergo & Welshie.

Anonymous said...

I could see myself living in one of those too Welshie.
They're gorgeous.

Another bad thing about nuclear power plants. When they're shut down it's not like they can be converted and sold as any form of living quarters. Who would want to live in a converted nuclear power plant or waste facility?

Anonymous said...

Workers briefly abandon Japan nuclear plant as crisis worsens
By Shinichi Saoshiro and Chisa Fujioka

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan's nuclear crisis appeared to be spinning out of control on Wednesday after workers withdrew briefly from a stricken power plant because of surging radiation levels and a helicopter failed to drop water on the most troubled reactor.
In a sign of desperation, the police will try to cool spent nuclear fuel at one of the facility's reactors with water cannon, which is normally used to quell riots.

:(

Welshie said...

Oh good god 7:20:( Seriously this nuclear crisis is really frightening me. North Wales experienced nuclear fallout from Chernobyl, Ukraine so I'm aware that the nuclear crisis in Japan can have a huge impact on other countries.

I just hope that they can keep things under control.

Welshie said...

You're very welcome 7:09. I really enjoyed our discussion. See my first reaction when asked my opinion on any topic is to panic and say I don't have an opinion when in fact I DO have an opinion on the matter I just lack the courage to voice that opinion you know.
So thanks for giving me the kick up the backside that I needed to join in the discussion:)

Pickled Possum said...

Top o' the mornin' to you, 10:23pm, Ergo, Elena, Welsie, 616, and Anons!

The images and stories out of Japan have been almost beyond comprehension. It is absolutely incredible that some people or animals were able to survive the tsunamis. Those two dogs...

Like so many of your countries NZ sent over USAR specialists to Japan - a third of our country's members infact, and most of them straight from Christchurch. One man was 2 1/2 hours into his first day off in three weeks.

They have been very humbled by the reaction of survivors when they find out where they have come from. The Japanese people are standing in an utter wasteland, with family and friends missing, and yet they've been thanking the NZers profusely for coming over when they have their own problems back home.

The people of Japan. Polite even in the face of extreme adversity.

Re Nuclear power, this is our country'sNuclear Free policy.

Over the years the odd, geologically uninformed, can't-remember-why-we-are-nuclear-free politician has raised the prospect of nuclear power. After recent tragic events, and papers running hot with "no way!" letters, it would be an unwise person to tout it here for some time.

Ergo, I hope those flood waters have dropped to safer levels now.

Welshie, that's two wins now isn't it?! Looks like your boyos are getting ready to hold the Cup. =)

And just saying, The Foo Fighters are truly generous and wonderful people. =)

See you. =)

Happy St. Patrick's Day.
Here's a few Irish Blessings that I've heard

May your pockets be heavy and your heart be light,
May good luck pursue you each morning and night.

May your blessings outnumber
The shamrocks that grow,
And may trouble avoid you
Wherever you go

As you slide down the banister of life,
May the splinters never point in the wrong direction!

^that one's my favourite:)

Hi PP:) We've won 3 games so far. Playing France on Saturday. Should be a good 'un. Bring it on!!

Looks like England's gonna win the Grand Slam this year.
*Grr, shakes fist at the England team*
No seriously, England are a strong team and they've played well. It'll be a nailbiter between them and Ireland. The Irish won't make it easy for them though!

Anonymous said...

I love you. Not like they told you love is, and I didn't know this either, but love don't make things nice - it ruins everything. It breaks your heart. It makes things a mess. We aren't here to make things perfect. The snowflakes are perfect. The stars are perfect. Not us. Not us! We are here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts and love the wrong people and die. The storybooks are bullshit. Now I want you to come upstairs with me and get in my bed!

ergoproxy said...

good morning!

Hi welshie, I don't follow the rugby but I can imagine that England vs Ireland would be a pretty huge match!
I like those blessings too.
I have this one on a bookmark I was given about 25 years ago.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Hey PP,
The rain dropped off that night and all is back to normal, lots of potholes to dodge but our phone is fixed yesterday (yay) after the junction box went underwater, apparently they don't like that lol

There is wonderful news coming through about the Prince's visit over there this morning, his compassion and openness seems to be swaying even the staunchest "what's the point of him coming" thinkers.
The time he is spending with families and the understanding and care he is showing is obviously making a big difference, and the major thing seems to be how nice and funny and open he is, discussing losing his own mum and his time as a rescue pilot.

The Foo Fighters have announced concerts here as well to donate the proceeds to the flood/cyclone rebuilding. Wish I was close enough to go. It is great they have added them into their busy schedule just to help out.

Very true about the people in Japan too, our guys who've gone over as well just after coming home from NZ are saying the same.

Hope everyone has a lovely day and recovers from St Patrick's festivities ok!

Well hello and goodnight Ergo.

Enjoy your show. I've always been fascinated by Lizzy Borden's story. (I don't think she did it) If you're interested I have several books on the subject.

Take care.

hey! I looked back after cleaning my teeth to see if you were there.
I'd love a book if you have one, I don't know much about it except that basic story.
I saw a documentary about H.H.Holmes you sent me the book about, Murder in the White City. It was interesting to see re-enactments and computer images of the area and the building he designed after reading the descriptions.

Hope I catch you tomorrow (for me)

Take care & have a good one!
goodnight xx

I think this is a great SAT essay question. I don't know why so many people are getting so about it.

“Reality television programs, which feature real people engaged in real activities rather than professional actors performing scripted scenes, are increasingly popular. These shows depict ordinary people competing in everything from singing and dancing to losing weight, or just living their everyday lives. Most people believe that the reality these shows portray is authentic, but they are being misled. How authentic can these shows be when producers design challenges for the participants and then editors alter filmed scenes?

“Do people benefit from forms of entertainment that show so-called reality, or are such forms of entertainment harmful?”

I would really love to read some of the answers from people who were outraged by the question because they are obviously too good and too smart to watch such mind numbing entertainment as reality tv.

Too bad they weren't smart enough to realize that wasn't the point of the question. ;)

“The central task of the SAT essay is to take one side of an issue and develop an argument to support that position," Laurence Bunin, senior vice president for operations and the general manager of the SAT Program at the College Board, said in a statement. "If presented with a topic about balancing the risk of climbing a mountain with the reward of reaching the summit, for example, a good writer could compose a strong essay without ever having reached the summit of Mount Everest."

“We acknowledge that not all students spend valuable hours watching reality television shows, nor are we recommending that students watch these programs," Bunin said. "However, we have found from our pretesting that students not only grasp but are quite interested in the underlying issues covered in the prompt: the effects of television on society; the desire for fame and celebrity on the part of “ordinary people”; the authenticity and value of various “realistic” representations (an issue central to the study of painting, film, drama and literature)."

Set them straight brotha Bunin.

Yes. I think some of them and the outraged parents did miss the point. Completely.
