guts

It is interesting when you get a fresh perspective of yourself from a new acquaintance. Even at this reasonably accomplished age, I am still able to find myself anew.

Recently, I have been fortunate to gain the friendship of an interesting character. A smart, quick-witted, young “old chap” of a guy whose creativity and open-minded ideals speak volumes for his generation. At his age I was not nearly as wise, worldly, cultured, present, or relevant as he is. Even now his intellect far exceeds my own, and his ability to perceive others astounds me. He is very deliberate with his words, often taking what seems to me to be far too long to respond to my often off-kilter banter. But always following his reflection, he delivers an astute, provocative discourse on whatever topic I had mindlessly rambled into. Seriously, the guy can talk me under the table…and that is saying something.

And I must admit he is a bit off, as well. Regardless, or perhaps in spite of those facts, I find him very interesting.

As it goes with most new friendships there is the crush period. The time where everything about the new friend is fascinating and we often try to find a bit of ourselves in our new pal. And so my new friend has attempted to find fascination in me, and has asked for the privilege (his term, not mine) of reading some of my writing. I initially waved him off, figured he would find what he wanted or give up. But, after the third very polite request, I obliged.

It is strange; I can write for an unknown audience without fear. I can put it out there for the world to read, all of it…without a second thought. Yet when I directly hand over a few poems to my new friend, I am paralyzed.

As I said, my new friend is very perceptive. So, when I stuffed a few of my poems in his hand and continued on about the weather, he immediately detected my insecurity. He saw in my rushed speech and downcast eyes that I was nervous. And while I waited for him to speak, to interrupt my prattle, I reeled. He placed the pages face down on the table, then said “Ah yes, I see I was correct. You are an exhibitionist and shy, both.”

Which really put me to thought…what purpose am I serving with these characteristics, if characteristics do in fact serve us?

I suppose that those opposing characteristics, that in my case are so apparently extreme, benefit each other. I can only imagine that my unchecked exhibitionism would undoubtedly lead me to my depraved end, and that my need to slap the world in the face keeps me from becoming a total shut-in.

p.s. what you got in you; what it takes.

The Hurt Locker was the night's big winner despite the vote-email controversy.

Anonymous said...

Best "Simultaneously Heartwarming and Humorous Speech": Sandra Bullock
In the span of a few moments, the best-actress winner elicited uproarious laughter and even made her hubby, Jesse James, get a little misty. "Did I really earn this or did I just wear you all down?” she quipped upon taking the stage. It wasn't the last laugh she got from the audience, which is remarkable considering she also gave a heartstring-tugging, detailed thank-you to her mother, who died 10 years ago next month. Take a look a clip from her speech:

Best "This Is the Same Person Who Directed 'Point Break'?" Award: Kathryn Bigelow
To put things mildly, Bigelow had a big night. Not only is she the first woman to ever win as best director, but her film, "The Hurt Locker," also led the evening with six wins -- including best picture. Not to mention, she got to have this night sitting right in front of her ex-husband, "Avatar" director James Cameron.

Best "Onstage Assembly of a Brain, an Athlete, a Basket Case, a Princess and a Criminal" Award: The John Hughes Tribute
Molly Ringwald delivered a touching tribute to John Hughes while Matthew Broderick introduced a montage of Hughes' films by admitting, that every day of his life, someone taps him on the shoulder and says (in a thick New York accent), "Hey Ferris, is today your day off?" The pair was soon joined on stage by other Hughes regulars Ally Sheedy, Macaulay Culkin, Judd Nelson, Jon Cryer and Anthony Michael Hall, and the Internet was soon flooded with memories of the late director's work.

Best "Most Sincere Surprise" Award: "Push" Screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher
All of the so-called experts said "Up in the Air" was a shoo-in for the best adapted screenplay award, which might explain why Fletcher -- who adapted the novel "Push" by Sapphire for the "Precious" screenplay -- seemed so genuinely struck by gratitude in his acceptance speech. "This is for everybody who works on a dream every day," Fletcher said, once he found his words through his nearly palpable emotion.

Best "Emotional Roller Coaster" Award: Gabourey Sidibe.
An elated Sidibe was having the time of her life at the beginning of the ceremony, vamping away onstage with all of the other best-actor and best-actress nominees. Later, tearful emotion got the best of her when Oprah introduced her before the best-actress award was handed out. No other nominee came close to expressing this wide a range of emotions. To be fair, who wouldn't get emotional if Oprah were talking about them? Somewhere James Frey is still crying, too.

Anonymous said...

From Kathryn Bigelow's historic acceptance speech
"I would not be standing here if it wasn't for Mark Boal, who risked his life for the words on the page and wrote such a courageous screenplay that I was fortunate to have an extraordinary cast bring that screenplay to life"

"I'd just like to dedicate this to the women and men of the military who risk their lives every day in Iraq and Afghanistan and around the world, May they come home safe."

"Perhaps one more dedication,To men and women all over the world who — sorry to reiterate — but wear a uniform, not just the military — HazMat, emergency, firemen. They are there for us, and we are there for them."

Hey TJ

I've been filling out my drivers license renewal test.

State of Kansas sends you the test and the nice little booklet with all the answers so you just fill it out, take it in (they don't even look to see if you answered them right) you pay them the money and they take your picture. Then you're ready to do. Oh and you have to past an eye test. Have to say I'm kinda worried about that part. Crap I hope I can pass it.

toujours said...

weekend? oh!

i have no idea what day it is anymore lol, but yeah, i did actually. i got a lot of computer time, and i spent it writing. :)

are you getting a lot of rain, ergo? my folks, the weather-channel-watchers, mentioned something about flooding in queensland?

i wish i was taking my test in your state, elena! then i'd have my driver's license for sure (and woe to the other drivers on the road!)

TJ let your folks know it isn't up where I am, but down the bottom of our state, heading into the one below. It is pretty bad for a lot of little towns and farms, I know some people down there but they and their homes are fortunately ok.

But don't you find, elena, men just seem to be able to do it? Women learn, guys I know just seem able lol. I'm sure it's a camp or something they all get sent to.
I can tie knots but not as good as DH, I am quite proficient at a truckies hitch now, with occasional supervision, but I really like those ratchet straps, much easier.

mayo,

i love the way randomness can take on meaning, the way our minds are always looking for patterns. it's why tarot works, and it's why listening to songs on shuffle is sometimes spookily sentient.

a couple weeks ago, i swear it knew i was feeling down. song after song, and all of them the sad ones, the slow ones, the atmospheric ones.

tonight, it seems to picking mostly the live recordings in my playlist. which is, again, perfectly suited to my mood.

hmm, maybe i should be leaving little offerings to the spirit of the shuffle, just like one sets out milk for the household brownies...?

The Music We Are

Did you hear that winter is over? The basil and the carnations cannot control their

laughter. The nightingale, back from his
wandering, has been made singing master

over the birds. The trees reach out their
congratulations. The soul goes dancing

through the king's doorway. Anemones blush
because they have seen the rose naked.

Spring, the only fair judge, walks in the
courtroom, and several December thieves steal

away. Last year's miracles will soon be
forgotten. New creatures whirl in from non-

existence, galaxies scattered around their
feet. Have you met them? Do you hear the

bud of Jesus crooning in the cradle? A single
narcissus flower has been appointed Inspector

of Kingdoms. A feast is set. Listen: the
wind is pouring wine! Love used to hide

inside images: no more! The orchard hangs
out its lanterns. The dead come stumbling by

in shrouds. Nothing can stay bound or be
imprisoned. You say, "End this poem here,

and wait for what's next." I will. Poems
are rough notations for the music we are.

Hello Mayo, SS, Elena, Ergo, TJ, MissT, Welshie, anonymoose, anonymeese and anonymice!

How are you all, today? Well and ready for Spring? I know I am ready for spring!!!

So, did you all know that Lita Ford is touring again?!!! How wonderful is that?! Pretty darn wonderful in my opinion!

MissT: I'm so sorry to hear the horrible tassle news. That is just not right! How dare they not allow you to wear your tassles (under your 'regulation' uniform)?!
Oh, the injustice of it all!!!!!

Did you explain to the powers that be how those tassles could aid you in apprehending suspects? Umm, hmmm... they could!

How you can hypnotise criminals into confessing with those things? You know, rip off your shirt and order them to "watch the tassles swing... round and round and round." "You are getting sleeeeepy. Very sleeeeepy. Now CONFESS!"

Umm, hmmm... you could!

;)

Elena: I love that movie (The Fog)!!! The original, of course! I was not nearly as impressed with the remake. Not one Adrienne in the whole bunch of them!

TJ: Did I read something about a new job? I hope I read that correctly. YAY you!

Ergo: Dante should have had Bukowski's cat! THAT was an amazing kitty cat!

Ohhh... and, before I forget

Welshie: This picture is for you. It's one of my Mardi Gras pictures. I could not help but think of you when this "krewe" came marching along. I'm sure you'll see why ~ when (and if) you

Well, I think that is all for now.

His mom is already planning their wedding. LOL!!!! And, my sister doesn't seem to have a problem with that idea either.

Well, she does have a slight problem when Chris' mom starts getting excited and speaking in Spanish! She no hablo espanol!

And, that lil man o'mine is growing up way too fast as well. SHEESH! Can't we just stop time for a couple of years?

I know you know the feeling. Much better than I!

Well, I must run; but, it was nice "catching" you in 'real time' if only for a brief moment!

Welshie said...

I'm here Elena, just been feeling a bit down lately :(
Me and my mates went for a meal over the weekend and who walks in but my ex, his parents and his fiancee. Haven't seen him since he left just over a year ago so it was a bit awkward. We chatted a little you know but still it was quite tense and I could see his mother twitching away hoping I wouldn't make a scene! But I wouldn't, it's not my style.
Anyway life goes on I guess.

Oh good god I nearly frightened myself to death this morning. You see last night I was eating a bunch of grapes when I nearly dropped a grape on the floor. I quickly grabbed it but managed to punch myself in the face at the same time. My nose started bleeding and I was in agony. I thought I'd broken my nose but I wouldn't go to A&E 'cos I'd have to explain that I was trying to catch a grape! hahaha. Oh god I can laugh now but it wasn't funny at the time.
Anyway back to this morning. My nose must've been bleeding in the night and my face was covered in dried blood this morning. When I looked in the mirror I nearly died of shock. Anyway a bit of soap and water and I was as right as rain:)

Going to have my tea now. I have absolutely nothing in the house. Found a couple of slices of bread. Might have some toast. Can't be arsed to go shopping.

Thanks for the picture Wendy. I've stopped practicing my bagpipes. I thought maybe the noise was keeping everyone away from this place:(
I shall start again when the lighthouse is finished :)

elena said...

Oh Welshie so sorry about the grape incident. I know it was painful but damn it's funny thinking about how you would have gone about explaining that to a doctor. Hope your nose is beter. Glad you are here I do understand how you feel, often I'm here just silent.

Lighthouse will be completed soon. I'm paying the workers overtime. (don't tell Mayo) it's just money after all. LOL

Enjoy your tea.

Hiya welshie, I was wondering where you were, wow very awkward evening you obviously had, but it's one of those essential milestones I suppose, and you handled it with dignity it'll help you let it go and move on.
But the grape incident! Oh dear!! What an awful mess you must have gotten into, and scary! Glad it wasn't any worse damage. I can understand your reticence on going to explain it at hospital,

Welshie said...

Do you know what I'm ashamed to say that I've been feeling a bit of resentment towards my sister these last few days. I know it's wrong. You see when my ex moved to Cardiff I was supposed to go with him. When my sister found a lump in her breast I knew then I couldn't leave. I had to stay and look after her. Maybe I was using it as an excuse to stay because I was really sad and a bit frightened of leaving home.

Over the weekend I've been thinking what if she hadn't had cancer and I'd gone to Cardiff. What would I be doing now? Would I be happy? Would we even still be together? So many questions and so few answers.

I adore my sister you know and I know that if I ever got sick she would look after me. No doubt about it. But after seeing him again I can't help feeling a bit angry that she got sick and my whole life changed in an instant.
I know it's wrong.

This waiting for the results is really getting to me you know. I've tried so hard to put it out of my mind but I keep thinking what if the treatment hasn't worked? What next?

I know I'll feel differently in the morning and I'll just be glad that she's still with us. She's looking really well these days. She's putting a bit of weight back on and her hair's growing fast. She wants to go everywhere and do everything. Good god woman, slow down! I can't keep up with her. She seems to be taking this so much better than me.

Sorry to burden you all with my problems.

It's late so I'm off to bed.

Take care.

Don’t for a minute feel bad about being honest about your feelings. The way you feel, the anger towards your sister, is because you love her. You aren’t angry at her you are angry at the disease. It showed up and threatened her life and threatened to change your life as well. Fear often leads to anger. Fear of losing your sister has made you angry.

Your sister is very lucky to have you.

Take care

hi, i haven't read the comments but i just wanted to pop on in the break to say hi, don't know when i'll be back tonight though!

turner classic movies is doing a kurosawa marathon tonight. i just finished watching "ikiru" which maybe just became one of my most favorite movies...

and now his version on macbeth is starting! holy cow, how can i pass that up??

i can't even begin to tell you what this guy's movies do to me.

right up there with good poetry (yeah, i saw the rumi poem this morning!)

oops, gotta go -- opening scenes!

back in a few hours!

ciao!

there's two more films in the marathon but sadly, i'm giving up after three. well, not really so sadly, because way back at the beginning of the evening, i didn't even know the movies were going to be on! i feel pretty lucky. :)

anyway, i've caught up on the comments, and welsh anon, i'm glad you were able to unburden yourself here. what your sister is going through -- and therefore, what you and your entire family are going through, as well -- it brings up every sort of feeling.

of course you would wonder what your life would be like otherwise, and of course you would feel sometimes like it's been derailed. those aren't wrong things to feel -- when someone you love has been diagnosed, it tosses everything into the air, and you'll feel every sort of reaction and emotion from here to tuesday.

i hope being able to write out what you were feeling helped you. i'm still keeping good thoughts for the outcome. stay strong. ♥

and now i am heading to bed! i will probably dream in black & white and subtitles. :)

good night, everyone.

sweet dreams!

mayo,

all three films were great, but really, "ikiru" was the highlight. i'd never seen it before, and it truly was an inspiring story. what's wonderful about movies like that one is that they aren't epic. "ikiru" takes you into one man's life. it's a movie that whispers to you, and because of that, makes a bigger impact.

i'm just so glad i got to see these films tonight. i love foreign films, i love the way you lose yourself in the experience, and forget even that you're reading! your mind makes the leap automatically, and i think being able to taste another culture that way is amazing.

and for it to be kurosawa? oh man, color me a happy girl. *grin*

now if i could just figure out a way to watch some of my favorite korean dramas...that would definitely be the icing on the cake!

ah well. not gonna complain. tonight was a treat, and no doubt about it.

hope you're doing well, mayo.

Hi elena. I saw a review of it here last night that said same sort of thing, great visually but let down a bit by the screenplay.

mayo,

i believe sometimes we have encounters with people because we're supposed to, for our benefit and theirs. it's why i'm nice to people at the bus stop, for the most part.

tonight i got a call from a telephone solicitor. i don't usually get many these days, so i don't mind listening to the spiel before politely turning them down. it doesn't bother me much to do so, and no sense making their job harder.

this guy was calling from the organization i gave money to in the wake of the haiti disaster. mostly, the call was more to acknowledge my contribution than to ask for money (well, okay, they were asking for money, too), but along the way it got derailed into a really great conversation about writing.

the guy on the other end of the line was in journalism before he switched careers, you see. we ended up talking about how you keep going as a writer, especially in the early stages when it's mostly a scrabble for work. he was so encouraging, and by the end of the conversation i was so fired up! i thanked him, but he thanked me, too, saying it was without a doubt the best call of the day. he had been encouraged, too.

i didn't give them any more money (i don't have it to give!), but i think maybe that wasn't really the reason for the call, don't you think?

hope you're doing well, mayo, and remember, magic is sometimes kind of sneaky. you've got to keep open to the possibilities.

take care, and good night.

Anybody read Stephen King's new old novel Under the Dome?

New because it was published in Nov2009
Old because it's a combo of 2 previously unfinished novels.

1 he wrote in 70s and 1 he wrote in 80s.
I hear he compares it to The Stand & Needful things.

Is it worth reading or should I just wait for the cable series there's talk of making?

Anonymous said...

Pinsky says that although Haim's heaviest years of abusing illicit drugs were behind him, he apparently followed the path of many addicts, taking prescription drugs instead of cocaine or heroin. He suspects Haim was reckless, exceeding recommended dosages or combining drugs in a dangerous manner – much like Anna Nicole Smith, who died in 2007 from a lethal combination of prescription drugs.

"It's mostly that people don't really understand addiction and how pernicious and progressive it is," says Pinsky, whose new show, Sober House, airs Fridays on VH1. "Abstinence is their only solution. If they want to return to a flourishing existence, they have to find their way to abstinence."

Haim's agent, Mark Heaslip, says he doesn't think Haim died of an overdose.

Denial-when your rich enough to have a press agent pick up where you left off.

ergoproxy said...

good morning!

2:24 I would always pick reading a book first over waiting for a cable series. Very few TV adaptations have ever been as good as the original novels, plus you can read at your own pace rather than wait a week or whatever between episodes. Why not try the library? That way if you don't like it just return it.

Banana cake differs from Banana bread how?

I have yet to be disappointed by a book, but movies and tv shows get the thumbs down from me.

ergoproxy said...

Hi Amy,
by my recipes not a lot of difference, no spices like cinnamon, makes a less dense and more cakey result and cooks faster than the banana bread I make

I use:
60g butter
90g sugar
1 egg
2 mashed banana
1/4 tsp bicarb of soda
2 tbs warm milk
125g self raising flour (you'd need to alter that)

and so far today I have a dozen each of banana blueberry muffins, banana and carrot muffins, banana, walnut muffins and will after lunch do banana date muffins.
Then as far as I am concerned whatever is left can go to the animals!

Don't leave me waiting here, lead me to you door
