guts

It is interesting when you get a fresh perspective of yourself from a new acquaintance. Even at this reasonably accomplished age, I am still able to find myself anew.

Recently, I have been fortunate to gain the friendship of an interesting character. A smart, quick-witted, young “old chap” of a guy whose creativity and open-minded ideals speak volumes for his generation. At his age I was not nearly as wise, worldly, cultured, present, or relevant as he is. Even now his intellect far exceeds my own, and his ability to perceive others astounds me. He is very deliberate with his words, often taking what seems to me to be far too long to respond to my often off-kilter banter. But always following his reflection, he delivers an astute, provocative discourse on whatever topic I had mindlessly rambled into. Seriously, the guy can talk me under the table…and that is saying something.

And I must admit he is a bit off, as well. Regardless, or perhaps in spite of those facts, I find him very interesting.

As it goes with most new friendships there is the crush period. The time where everything about the new friend is fascinating and we often try to find a bit of ourselves in our new pal. And so my new friend has attempted to find fascination in me, and has asked for the privilege (his term, not mine) of reading some of my writing. I initially waved him off, figured he would find what he wanted or give up. But, after the third very polite request, I obliged.

It is strange; I can write for an unknown audience without fear. I can put it out there for the world to read, all of it…without a second thought. Yet when I directly hand over a few poems to my new friend, I am paralyzed.

As I said, my new friend is very perceptive. So, when I stuffed a few of my poems in his hand and continued on about the weather, he immediately detected my insecurity. He saw in my rushed speech and downcast eyes that I was nervous. And while I waited for him to speak, to interrupt my prattle, I reeled. He placed the pages face down on the table, then said “Ah yes, I see I was correct. You are an exhibitionist and shy, both.”

Which really put me to thought…what purpose am I serving with these characteristics, if characteristics do in fact serve us?

I suppose that those opposing characteristics, that in my case are so apparently extreme, benefit each other. I can only imagine that my unchecked exhibitionism would undoubtedly lead me to my depraved end, and that my need to slap the world in the face keeps me from becoming a total shut-in.

p.s. what you got in you; what it takes.

OMG now I have that damn song "Knock on Wood" in my head. Okay don't know if that's the actual title of the song but it's in my head. LOL

So what did you do today TJ?

toujours said...

i don't know what song that is, thankfully!

i just read, mostly. i'm still pretty worn out. but i did do a load of laundry -- yay me!

lol

and then this evening i watched a bunch of st:tng...i haven't watched that show in about forever. i'm pleasantly surprised at how well some of them have held up over the years (and then there are those episodes that just make me facepalm in embarrassment for ever having seen them at all lol)

Sadly Mr E and I are lost in memories. We are trying to find "Alexander the Great" that we watched on Adult Swim. Trying to find it on DVD. Seriously it was one of the most gay anima shows we ever watched. One summer Sunshine and I watched it ever night after the other sisters fell asleep and Mr E went to work.

Holy crap I found "Reign" on E-Bay the complete set. It shall be mine LOL

Not sure why I want to watch it again but I do.

elena said...

At this point I honestly don’t know what to think about MCR anymore. Bob left a month ago and the group is just now telling the fans. A month ago? Seriously? Gee thanks so much for the heads up. What the hell? For a group that likes to say they are so in touch with their fans and care so much about them this just seems too much to take. I’m so tried of this drama. They need to get their shit together.

Yeah and with that I’m outta here for the night. Gonna celebrate KU’s win and mourn MCR’s loss.

Take care

Anonymous said...

You couldn't tell she was pissed TJ? Is this you're version of humor? Are you trying to be coy or something. Right.

Anyway. I second you're angry Elena, and I add a bit of "Come On Guys" and "I Expected Better."

To Bob: I hope you find everything in life that makes you happy.

To Remaining MCR: Ditto. But a little more organization, thought (for everyone ELSE invested too) and heart in the process would be great. Can't wait for the new album, unless you're lying about that too.

Hope everyone's health is just fabulous.

Sincerely, Disgruntled but Trying to Maintain Loyalty and Faith While No Doubt Failing, Fan.

Anonymous said...

Eh, I don't feel MCR owes me explanations, just music.

Anonymous said...

Explanations aren't needed. But a little more thought for the fans that give a shit, would be -nice. For lack of a better word.

Do you not worry how they are doing from time to time? Some fans do. Some fans worry when rumors abound for long periods of time, while simple truth is known and could be stated -thus ending the worry. Get it? I supposed that is an explaination of sorts. I just tend to think of it more as professionalism. Hmm. Or, Eh.

Good night to you 11:29.

Anonymous said...

I don't feel MCR owes me explanations or music. This new album was never complete enough to offer presale ordering. So, they don't owe me a thing.

I'm sure they owe Warner music though.

Best wishes for a satisfactory outcome to all parties involved.

Anonymous said...

However the IRS does owe me a significant tax credit for screwing up two years ago.

Anonymous said...

Good luck seeing that, 11:51.

Anonymous said...

I guess I honestly have never felt that invested in a band that I wanted anything from them other that good music. I guess when I was a teen and had posters on my walls and stuff like that, maybe. I love music, adore it even, but I can easily disassociate music and band drama.

Anonymous said...

Thanks 11:56. They have admitted their error. Who says you can't fight the IRS and win?

The problem seems to be that they don't understand what a tax credit is.

I should have just cashed the damn check they sent me and not mailed it back to them telling them I said I wanted the tax credit on this years return and not the money.

Anonymous said...

At the rate they're going, it doesn't look like MCR's going to be giving anyone any music anytime soon.

I don't look for this record to even come out this year.

Anonymous said...

And filled out the tax credit paperwork 3 effin times.

toujours said...

i was over at lj, catching up on the mcr comms, or i would've answered 11:29 sooner, sorry.

11:29, i didn't see elena's comment until mine posted. took me awhile to type mine up and didn't realize she would be writing a good night and leaving. so, wasn't trying to be funny, just an honest reaction to reading her good night comment.

in regards to the other comments, i have to admit i'm a little surprised at all the negative reactions. sadness at the news i understand; bob was a lot of fun in interviews and i'm going to miss watching him play the drums.

but it's like...the band is driving the bus, you know? and us fans are just along for the ride. they have to decide what's the best for them, and while it would be nice to know why bob left, i don't expect to know, because i don't know what all was involved in the decision, or what agreements were made, or any of that.

so i just wish bob well, and hope that this will turn out to be the best for everyone.

Anonymous said...

Me too 11:57.

How they get from point A to point B is their business. Not mine.

Anonymous said...

Those emotionally invested in bands, tend not to want for "band drama." Liking the members personallities, feeling able to relate to them, wanting positive things for them, that is not a desire for unfortunate events in those members lives. Or profession.

But of course, I am assuming. Or more speaking just for myself, as I feel I am invested in certain bands but I am not a teenager either. So, maybe some fans do want drama. I for one, do not. Nor do I feel that many of the fellow fans I know, want for it either.

I believe you are assuming or pod-minding fan's together, 11:57. But, shit happens. I do it too. Thank you for the conversation.

No problem 12:03. I was being sarcastic, but really, best of luck with that. I am certain you will need it.

Well 12:04, considering all that has happened, who the fuck knows. Fingers crossed, I guess.

Really must be off, good night all.

Ergo it's good to have you back.

TJ I do hope that you get the job. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Elena I totally agree with you that MCR should've said something sooner. It's a shame that Bob's leaving. You know I never really thought that Bob was comfortable being in a band.
I have absolutely no respect left for this band. I find that I don't believe anything they say anymore. Are they lying about Gerard's vocal problems? Who knows. Who cares. I stopped caring a long time ago.
Maybe my opinion doesn't matter to anyone least of all the band because you see I'm not a HUGE fan of MCR I just quite like some of their songs. I don't have any of their merchandise, don't have their posters on my wall and I've never seen them live. They won't miss me one bit.

O.K. I've got a few minutes left of my lunch break. I'm going for a walk 'cos it's such a beautiful day here in Wales.

Anonymous said...

It's a beautiful day here where I live too Welshie.

The sun is shining. The birds are singing. The grass is starting to grow back.

Have a nice walk.

Anonymous said...

I think Elena needs to re-evaluated her position as an MCR fan.

The band doesn't owe the fans anything. Your sense of entitlement is infuriating. A fan's job is to support the band--to go to the shows, buy the records and the merchandise, not to ask questions about the business and/or personal decisions they make.

We're not their friends. We're not their families and we're not their business associates. They don't owe us anything.

Anonymous said...

If MCR want to keep their day jobs then they owe their fans an explanation. A lot of their fans have gotten shit for liking them. MCR should at least be straight with their fans after all the support they have shown them. It will keep further rumors from spreading and keep fans happy. Happy fans will continue to support a band no matter how many members leave.

Anon(s) you may not feel the need for an explanation but a lot of other people do. Maybe it is you who should re evaluate your view.

I am sure if someone else had said that on another blog or about some other band you would have been more understanding.

toujours said...

EERRRRGOOOOOOO!!! :D

welcome back welcome back welcome back!! i look forward to chatting to you again! welcome back from exile!

hi welsh anon -- i hope you had a nice walk. :)

i can't be online long -- i just hopped on real quick while having my morning coffee -- but while i'm here i'd like to say that one of my least favorite fan arguments is the whole "they owe me/don't owe me" theme. i dislike reducing what is a creative act on one side and a willing participation in that act on the other to a base exchange.

i don't support anything -- mcr, the authors i like, the shows i've been a fan of, the artists i enjoy -- because i feel like i am purchasing something from them.

i will never use the term "owe" in regards to something i'm a fan of because i never feel like i have bought that object, that creation. i participate in them -- as a viewer, as a listener, as a supporter of their endeavor -- because i feel emotionally engaged by the story they're telling, or music they're performing.

but in the end, they're the artists, they're the creators, and liek i said last night, i'm just along for the ride. and in the case of mcr, one of the things i admire about them is what they do with adversity. as much as i will miss bob, i am looking forward to seeing how the band will transform that, and how they will use that in their next evolution.

but owe us? that's too simplistic and too mercenary an attitude. i don't mean to offend anyone who thinks differently, this is just a topic on which i have a strong opinion.

gotta go! i can't tie up the phone line any longer! :)

ciao!

elena said...

Okay let me re-evaluate the situation. Now to your way of thinking I am expected to go to shows and buy the merch, that is all. I’m not to question the band or any decisions they make. Yeah well that doesn’t really work for me. MCR has always portrayed themselves as a band you deeply cared about their fans. They cared about more than just the money that they could fish out of their pockets. Maybe they never really felt that way, maybe it has always been simply a job to the members and nothing more. Who really knows?

I still stand by my comment. It was shitty to let the fans twist in the wind for days after the Bob leaving rumor came out. And then to find out he’s really been gone for a month just added insult to injury. I don’t know why he left and I’m pretty sure the fans will never know the real reason.

Oh and I do understand your way of thinking anon but there is a flaw. I’m supposed to go to the shows and buy the merch in return they are supposed to entertain me with music. See they do owe me something. Well it’s been a fuckin’ long time since they’ve given us any new music. And now it’s pretty obvious nothing new will be popping up anytime soon.

I’m stupid but I still care about the band. I care about each guy. Why? Fuck if I know. I can’t explain it, I just do. So I’ll continue to do my job – go to shows and buy the music. But I’m not gonna stop worrying and caring and I’m not gonna shut up.

Anonymous said...

I’m not to question the band or any decisions they make. Yeah well that doesn’t really work for me.

You can question all you want but it's not going to do you any good. It's not like you're going to get any answers.

The way I see it, you have two choices. You can continue to support the band with your money or you won't. My guess is that you will.

So in the long run it doesn't matter whether you like the way they handled the Bob situation or not.

elena said...

Very true anon what I do or don't do makes not one bit of difference. I get that, I really do.

Very simplistic way of thinking anon. Considering the thousands labels spend carefully trying to cultivate just the right image for their brands to establish a connection with the people that would be willing to part with their money, I would say that you can understand why these people feel so called "entitled".

Anonymous said...

The psychology behind the sale, establish a relationship with the customer to ensure brand longevity which is exactly what these five did as part of their contract.

Now it's all become too much for them and out comes the "they don't owe you anything" speeches. Figuratively speaking true, but in light of how the whole thing was sold, the expectation has been created.

Anonymous said...

This is bullshit. MCR doesn't have a contract with you.

The only thing they "owe" you is what you've already paid for: any previous CDs, shows, merch, etc., which I'm sure you found satisfactory.

Don't like the way they are conducting business now? Simple. DON'T BUY ANY MORE OF THEIR PRODUCT.

Duh.

It ain't rocket science.

While the reason for Bob's leaving remains a mystery, the reason for the band's silence is not.

Stop blaming the band for something that Warner is responsible for.

good morning!!

long time since I've been able to do that :]

hey all, back in a bit after breakfast and getting BG off to school

Anonymous said...

If bands don't owe their fans anything then what they have paid for, why do so many make a VH1 behind the music? Why do some write tell all books?

Just not buying the CD is only part of it. If the band doesn't know why people aren't spending money on them they will keep repeating the same mistakes.

Anonymous said...

^ anything more

Hi everyone. I had a lovely walk thank you anon @ 10:41 and TJ.

You know everyone has their opinion on the MCR issue. I understand and respect Elena's, TJ's and the anons opinions. Some are disappointed, others accept it and that's o.k.
Like I said I lost interest in them a while ago.

Anonymous said...

I doubt that it is just the money. I don't think they get paid a lot of money for behind the music.

Sorry about the double post. Blogger's playing silly buggers tonight.

ergoproxy said...

hello welshie!
how are you?

I think "owe" is the wrong word to use, I think fans feel a band should have the courtesy to inform them of things going on, however I think that is also a fairly modern feeling, years ago I think bands and actors were seen as entertainers and their private lives or time between performances of whatever kind was not available for the public to know, due to both a lack of avenues and the control of studios. Big scandals were the only ones heard of. No one knew Rock Hudson was gay, or more recently Mr Brady. People didn't know of marriages etc unless it was a "big star" like eg. Elvis, financial troubles, illnesses, addictions. Now that there is so much access available to the lives of anyone well known it has developed into an expectation. Which performers have encouraged, so the feelings people have are very valid for them, though perhaps not necessarily wholly warranted, or understood by the performer involved. For example, really the only person actually owed an apology by Tiger Woods was his wife and when able to understand, his children. Not the public, not the alleged mistresses etc. However as people have so much access and the publicity he had enjoyed was so wide it was as though he betrayed far more people than he actually directly did. The publicists and the media and the performers themselves encourage the attention and the feeling of accessibility, when really it is a two-edged sword when anything untoward occurs.

And behind the music does pay for interviews, and many times the stories are gleaned from people other than those the shows are about, and the tell all books usually coincide with some sort of self promotion.
I think nothing is ever done for nothing in the entertainment industry.

AS for MCR I think no decision would have been taken lightly, it would have been nice to know a bit earlier before rumours, but they all have to do whatever they feel is the best for themselves and the band at the time, including how much they put out into the public arena. I continue to wish all of them well but it would be good if they understood the feelings they have inspired in people up to now, and think perhaps of the courtesy that should generally follows that type of thing.
(plus I hope Tiger did a much much much better job of being genuine to his wife than to the audience of his public speech)

I'm well thank you Ergo and you?
It really is good to have you back.

I had a really yummy sweet and sour chicken for my tea tonight:)

You know Ergo you have a way with words. You always put your point across clearly. I never seem to make sense. Sometimes I read my comments back and think, bloody 'ell what's she on about!

Anonymous said...

I didn't say that the bands weren't getting paid for the behind the music show I said I didn't think that it was a lot of money.

What you are saying is a band would perfer to get paid for answer rather then tell their fans the truth but it's not because they want to do it that way. All those evil people at Warner or whoever are making them do it.

ergoproxy said...

welshie don't sell yourself short, I have no problems understanding you.

your dinner sounds very yummy, I have just had breakfast a bit ago, topsy turvey!
I saw you said you had a Superted and Roland Rat, they didn't ever show Roland Rat here, though I ahve seen hiom, but we did watch superted!
I have a womble, I got a Mme Cholet and my brother an Uncle Bulgaria from a family friend who visited there, Though I did love Orinocco most.
I also used to watch Basil Brush and Lamb Chop

Welshie said...

anon @ 7:14. I hope you don't mind me asking but how do you know what the people at Warner are doing?

ergoproxy said...

anon those shows ,as I said, often aren't the actual band members, or not all of them and are very often made some time after the band or celebrity has ceased to perform or exist, so they are happy to be paid.
I certainly doubt there are evil forces of any kind controlling anyone. They make their choices to suit themselves. Whether people agree with them or not is probably in a whole lot of cases a secondary consideration.
I really don't see where you got the "what you are saying..." from. But sorry if you got that impression, it certainly wasn't what I meant.

Welshie said...

Oh Ergo, Roland Rat was a superstar. He was a cheeky bugger though. I loved his car, the Ratmobile. It was a bright pink Ford Anglia. Loved it.

I never had a womble :(

Well my printer's knackered. I'll have to buy a new one. Bloody annoying thing is though I've just put new ink cartridges in it, and I also bought spare ones 'cos I live so far out of town. I've had it a while so none of the new printers take this kind of cartridge and they're bloomin' expensive. Grrr.

Anonymous said...

I was adressing your comment as well as the anons comments.

Goodnight

Welshie said...

Basil Brush Boom, Boom!!! hahaha.

I also loved Roland Rat's friend, Errol the hamster. He was from Cardiff and loved all things Welsh. There's lovely!!!

ergoproxy said...

no worries 7:33, I hope I clarified my part of it better, perhaps other anons may also if you feel it is still not clear from their end.
Goodnight

the car sounds cute welshie! I saw lots of Uk kids shows growing up, Australia tended to use them mostly, apart from sesame street for younger kids. Then later we got Banana Splits and such.
Did you see Bananaman? I LOVED that show!!

Welshie said...

No I didn't watch Bananaman Ergo. God I typed Bananananaman to begin with! Couldn't stop!
Kept saying "Ba na na na na man, shit I've got too many na na's now!" haha.

Well it's 1 a.m. here and I'm tired.
It's great to be able to talk to you again Ergo.

Take care.

Goodnight.

I'd give a lot to see the shit storm this would be if it was Gerard or Frank who left the band.

I'd love to see TJ brush that off. And holy shit, Elena would go ballistic.

Evil, nassy anons. Picking on the blues. Obviously they're just jealous because they can't happy dance as good and as often as Ergo.

toujours said...

okay, i'm back, i've got my tea.

if i remember correctly, since gerard started the band, and always calls it his band, if he left, i'm thinking there wouldn't really be an mcr, would there? so, yeah, that would make me very, very sad.

but hopefully, not shrill. i'm embarrassed by the reactions i've been reading at the lj comms.

if frank left, i'd be sad too, but just like with this news about bob, i would hope that the split was something that everyone decided was for the best, and that frank's future would be filled with great things. which is exactly how i feel about bob leaving.

Yes I did come here tonight. And it's too much of a pain to have to keep hitting "newest" every time so this is a rare thing for me. It just ..... floors me that the people here are such puppets and so sadly easy to amuse. How witty is "me! happy dances"? Not much.

I knew MCR had some teenybopper fans but when they get old and still act like teenyboppers it's just..... yeah.

Anonymous said...

Yes I did comment tonight but believe me it is way too much a pain in the ass to keep hitting "newest" to get to the last page so I never bother anymore. Especially when the version of "wit" here is "Me! Happy dance" on every page.

No thanks.

Anonymous said...

Sorry thought blogger killed the first post. Yeah, even blogger itself sucks.

And no, your wit didn't floor me, sorry. You just sound like a defensive old blue. :)

I am just uploading a pic of the lizard my cat Tom tried to chase, it would NOT have gone well if he'd caught it (it is a blurry one though)

going good thanks, they are here a bit longer still, hoping to get for a drive this weekend to a place famed for it's meat pies up the valley, which is really pretty. Tried last weekend but the rain got so heavy you could barely see the road, so we had lunch in town instead, which was very yummy, but not quite the same.
How are your olds going and your sis and her kittens?

Oh but I guess you never said "dumbass" either.

Hey the internet is not for every sensitive little flower. I know you are all fluffy bunny here on the surface.

good night, anon.

my mom is doing really well with her after-surgery care -- she's going to the hospital every day for physical therapy. she's just starting, so it's hard work, but she's determined to get through it so she can put away her cane. (or just use it to keep the husband in line lol)

since i've been unemployed, i haven't heard much from my sis, but my brother-in-law was telling me that they're starting to get seriously worried about one of their cats. they're both smokers, and only smoke out on their deck. the other day, they noticed that one of the cats seems to be figuring out how to work the handle on the patio door...they're afraid that she might figure out how to lock them out!

toujours said...

oh and please give your folks greetings from the other side of the globe! that's nice that they can make a long visit. :)

Glad your mum is getting about, it's good she is determined, physio is pretty hard work and seems to take so long, but I think she should keep the cane just in case, lol
What a tricky cat too! It may be hatching some evil plot to stage a sort of intervention. They look in despair through the door as the cats one by one use the cigarette packs as kitty litter.

toujours said...
