guts

It is interesting when you get a fresh perspective of yourself from a new acquaintance. Even at this reasonably accomplished age, I am still able to find myself anew.

Recently, I have been fortunate to gain the friendship of an interesting character. A smart, quick-witted, young “old chap” of a guy whose creativity and open-minded ideals speak volumes for his generation. At his age I was not nearly as wise, worldly, cultured, present, or relevant as he is. Even now his intellect far exceeds my own, and his ability to perceive others astounds me. He is very deliberate with his words, often taking what seems to me to be far too long to respond to my often off-kilter banter. But always following his reflection, he delivers an astute, provocative discourse on whatever topic I had mindlessly rambled into. Seriously, the guy can talk me under the table…and that is saying something.

And I must admit he is a bit off, as well. Regardless, or perhaps in spite of those facts, I find him very interesting.

As it goes with most new friendships there is the crush period. The time where everything about the new friend is fascinating and we often try to find a bit of ourselves in our new pal. And so my new friend has attempted to find fascination in me, and has asked for the privilege (his term, not mine) of reading some of my writing. I initially waved him off, figured he would find what he wanted or give up. But, after the third very polite request, I obliged.

It is strange; I can write for an unknown audience without fear. I can put it out there for the world to read, all of it…without a second thought. Yet when I directly hand over a few poems to my new friend, I am paralyzed.

As I said, my new friend is very perceptive. So, when I stuffed a few of my poems in his hand and continued on about the weather, he immediately detected my insecurity. He saw in my rushed speech and downcast eyes that I was nervous. And while I waited for him to speak, to interrupt my prattle, I reeled. He placed the pages face down on the table, then said “Ah yes, I see I was correct. You are an exhibitionist and shy, both.”

Which really put me to thought…what purpose am I serving with these characteristics, if characteristics do in fact serve us?

I suppose that those opposing characteristics, that in my case are so apparently extreme, benefit each other. I can only imagine that my unchecked exhibitionism would undoubtedly lead me to my depraved end, and that my need to slap the world in the face keeps me from becoming a total shut-in.

p.s. what you got in you; what it takes.

Strange things are afoot at the Circle-K. Can’t you just feel it in the air? Now I’m not saying I think it’s necessary bad but I feel a change coming. It’s like that feeling you get when a tornado is coming. Okay that sounds bad but the thing is it’s not always bad. Many times the storm builds but it doesn’t hit. If you think about it that’s pretty much how life is…each day there is the possibility something bad will happen. But each day there is always the chance that it won’t and something wonderful will occur. Okay I’m not making sense to anyone but me I’m sure. But that’s okay. I’m down with that!

Hope you are safe and happy. I miss ya. Take care.

Night Mayo

Ergo, nice to see you, to see you nice :)
Oh believe me it wasn't funny being stuck in a confined space with your worst nightmare!
I wish I wasn't so terrified of birds but that incident with my sister and the pheasant when I was little scarred me for life. You can't escape pheasants when you live in the country. They're blooming everywhere. They stroll around my garden as if they own the bloody place. I have a neatly stacked pile of stones by my front door just in case I come across a ninja pheasant! Do you know once there was a dead pheasant just by my car. It must've been injured and crawled into my driveway and died right in front of my car door. Bastard! Why pick on me! Go and find someone else's bloody driveway to die in! Trying to get into my car that day was bloody hilarious. I'd parked too close to the fence so couldn't get in through the passenger door. I only had a two door car then. I tried moving it with a broom, then a shovel, but I felt physically sick, so I ended up climbing in through the boot of the car. Driving off was a bit dicey 'cos I'd moved it right next to the front wheel and was petrified that I'd squash it and have bits of pheasant all over the place!!!
Good god I really must try and cure this phobia.

Hi Elena, TJ and anons.

Miss T. I hope everything is going well for you. Hope to speak to you soon.

TJ, Elena. I had to laugh about your discussion on curly hair :)
I had jet black curly hair when I was a toddler. One day my sister got a pair of scissors and cut all my curls off and put them in a paper bag and gave them to my mam. Cue hysterical screams!
She found me sitting on a stool in the bedroom totally oblivious to what was going on. I was nearly bald, just little clumps of black hair on my scalp.
The funny thing was though we were going to a family reunion the following day and lots of photographs would be taken. I had to go wearing a stupid pink hat. I looked like a right plonker :(

I never had any more curls after that. Grrr. Is envious of curly hair.

I'm going to the pub to watch the Wales/France Rugby game this evening. Go Wales!

What ever happened with Carly Simon's lawsuit against Starbucks? Was that settled?

Anonymous said...

She (Simon) tells Uncut magazine, "You know what, I'm just going to tell you this. The answer is on the new version of You're So Vain, on my new record Never Been Gone. There's a little whisper and it's the answer to the puzzle."

Geffen ran Simon's Elektra record label at the time of the song's release and instead of being about a failed relationship, the lyrics are now thought to hint at the singer's lingering resentment after Geffen allegedly put more effort into promoting rival star Joni Mitchell.

here's that wonderful poem by neil gaiman i mentioned a few days ago:

Instructions

Touch the wooden gate in the wall you never saw before,
Say “please” before you open the latch,
go through,
walk down the path.
A red metal imp hangs from the
green-painted front door,
as a knocker,
do not touch it; it will bite your fingers.
Walk through the house. Take nothing. Eat nothing.
However,
if any creature tells you that it hungers,
feed it.
If it tells you that it is dirty,
clean it.
If it cries to you that it hurts,
if you can,
ease its pain.

From the back garden you will be able to see the wild wood.
The deep well you walk past leads down to Winter’s realm;
there is another land at the bottom of it.
If you turn around here,
you can walk back, safely;
you will lose no face. I will think no less of you.

Once through the gardens you will be in the wood.
The trees are old. Eyes peer from the undergrowth.
Beneath a twisted oak sits an old woman.
She may ask for something;
give it to her. She
will point the way to the castle. Inside it
are three princesses.
Do not trust the youngest. Walk on.
In the clearing beyond the castle the
twelve months sit about a fire,
warming their feet, exchanging tales.
They may do favors for you, if you are polite.
You may pick strawberries in December’s frost.

Trust the wolves, but do not tell them
where you are going.
The river can be crossed by the ferry.
The ferryman will take you.
(The answer to his question is this:

If he hands the oar to his passenger, he
will be free to leave the boat.
Only tell him this from a safe distance.)

If an eagle gives you a feather, keep it safe.
Remember: that giants sleep too soundly; that
witches are often betrayed by their appetites;
dragons have one soft spot, somewhere, always;
hearts can be well hidden,
and you betray them with your tongue.
Do not be jealous of your sister:
know that diamonds and roses
are as uncomfortable when they tumble
from one’s lips as toads and frogs:
colder, too, and sharper, and they cut.

Remember your name.
Do not lose hope – what you seek will be found.
Trust ghosts. Trust those that you have
helped to help you in their turn.
Trust dreams.
Trust your heart, and trust your story.

When you come back, return the way you came.
Favors will be returned, debts be repaid.
Do not forget your manners.
Do not look back.
Ride the wise eagle (you shall not fall)
Ride the silver fish (you will not drown)
Ride the gray wolf (hold tightly to his fur).

There is a worm at the heart of the tower;
that is why it will not stand.

When you reach the little house, the
place your journey started,
you will recognize it, although it will seem
much smaller than you remember.
Walk up the path, and through the garden
gate you never saw before but once.
And then go home. Or make a home.

Or rest.

Lo in thine honour I will build a place
Where thou and I may dwell with love apart,
Hand clasped in hand and beating heart to heart,
And find from life's dull tumult a sweet space
Of rest and quiet: on its walls I trace
Shapes of religious and devoted art
And hues of fair imaginings, that start
And fill each crevice with thy sudden face.
Come live in it, for it is thine; thy friend
Is but the architect. 'Tis dark: so come,
Reveal its form with thine indwelling smile.
Nor lack I some far hope that in the end
Thy memory may thine heritor become,
And live in this pure house a little while.

La Fuite de la Lune

To outer senses there is peace,
A dreamy peace on either hand,
Deep silence in the shadowy land,
Deep silence where the shadows cease.

Save for a cry that echoes shrill
From some lone bird disconsolate;
A corncrake calling to its mate;
The answer from the misty hill.

And suddenly the moon withdraws
Her sickle from the lightening skies,
And to her sombre cavern flies,
Wrapped in a veil of yellow gauze.

Evanescence Drummer To Join Black Label Society

(RTTNews) - Black Label Society have recruited Evanescence drummer Will Hunt to replace Craig Nunenmacher behind the kit.

Hunt will join the band, led by by former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde, for studio albums and for tours. He will also remain a member of Evanescence, who have begun recording a new studio album in the past week.

The band confirmed Hunt's membership in a statement issued on its MySpace page.

Morning all. =)

I hope your eyes are all still half closed because my smile isn't quite big enough to be decent!

Elena,
May I add to your quake watchlist, please? - a 5.5 on the 25th, and a 5.1 today. Small fry really. Nowhere close to our 8.2 we had last year.

NZ Earth Science 101:
"To the east of the North Island the Pacific plate is being forced under the Australian plate. Under the South Island the two plates push past each other sideways, and to the south of New Zealand the Australian plate is being forced under the Pacific plate."

As a result we get anywhere between 10,000 and 15,000 quakes a year in NZ, but only around 150 of them will cause damage.

They don't tell you that on the tourist brochures lol.

And

we rock! =)

*smacks upside own head for sheer awfulness* ;)

Mayo,
Caution: a side effect of stealth mode is fade.

p.s. our tsunami was a tiddler despite all the coastal evacuations and beach closures. The tide dropped 1.5m in a few minutes, and surged 0.30m.

Didn't stop the surfers.

How are you?

Welshie said...

Oh you don't have to tell me about the problems of rural life Ergo. We have very limited mobile phone signals here. It's all these damn mountains. Last year I could only get a signal if I stood in the middle of the cemetery and waved the phone about like a lunatic!
It was a strange sight believe me, especially if there was a few of us doing it at the same time.
Aliens might've thought it was some kind of mating ritual!

ergo said...

hahaha I can imagine how it looked! We have no servce at our house, it starts about halfway to town and even then you have to judge calls between hills!
Always laugh cynically when people get rescued in god-knows-where-middle-of-the-ocean/desert or such after calling for help on their mobile, and I can't call from my own house.

Do just be careful of strange lights in the sky after a phone waving episode.

Welshie said...

Strange lights in the sky you say. Hmm.
Strange you should say that Ergo 'cos about thirty years ago I think, I'll have to check, some people believe that an alien spaceship crash landed on the Berwyn Mountains which isn't really that far from me. Strange lights were seen that night. It's a mystery to this day.

There was a recent television programme about it. The local people there absolutely believe that it was a spaceship. The army were there within minutes so they must've been tracking it. One lady, I think she was a local nurse saw the explosion and drove up the mountain to try and help, thinking it was an aeroplane or something. She was sent back by the army but not before she saw a strange alien looking body being carried away! Spooky!

Don't know too much about it.I should try and read up on it.

Hey Elena!

Sorry, just trying to get supper on the go for the celebrators around here. Canada won hockey gold in the olympics, so I'm making Paella for supper.

No, no correlation, except that not my meals are usually revolving around fish and chips, and chicken and potatoes during the week because of a serious lack of prep time.

hey mayo,

a quick good night, but i wanted to share this with you.

i was reading a patricia mckillip book today and came across this:

"They never say yes or no, but always maybe. Maybe I'm stone. Maybe more than stone."

it instantly made me think of you. *grin*

'course, you're more like a silent stone these days, but that's ok.

hope things are good for you, and if they aren't, i hope they are steadily getting better.

take care, and good night.

HAPPY SAINT DAVID'S DAY TO YOU ALL.

I'll be in Mayo's drawing room handing out bunches of daffodils and yummy Welsh Cakes if anyone wants any. Everyone is welcome to help themselves, Mayo, S.S., present bloggers, past bloggers, anons (even nasty anons).
I refuse to dress up in a little Welsh Lady costume with that silly hat, however I think I should make an effort so I'll wear a Welsh Dragon costume. :)

Good Morning

Welshie thanks so much for the daffodils and yummy Welsh Cakes.

Such a nice way to start off my morning. What's this about a dragon costume? That's a must see!

Hope the day is good for all here.

Welshie said...

Hi Elena and anon. Glad you like the welsh cakes.

I've been standing in this drawing room for hours. Got a bit bored and went around blogbelieve handing out my cakes and daffodils.

Do you like my costume Elena?
The Welsh Dragon costume looks a bit like Barney from Barney and friends, except it's red and it's a dragon! I've got a tail and everything:) It's really heavy and hot:(

You see loads of these costumes in Wales on a Rugby match day. Keeps you nice and warm when you're in the stands watching the game. Not such a good idea in Mayo's drawing room though. Someone had already lit the fire and I'm rather hot:(

*waddles off to Mayo's kitchen for a glass of water*

elena said...

Goodness Welshie don't pass out from the heat.

I like the dragon costume but I'm kinda wondering about the one with the silly little hat.

I have my broadband up and running now and it couldn't come soon enough I can tell you hahaha!

Hope you have a lovely lie in tomorrow morning. *leaves Shaun the Sheep cuddly toy on Miss T's pillow.*

Aw bless you Welshie *snuggles up to new favourite cuddly toy*

Hiya Anima, it was great to see you back here. You are missed too sweetie.

Well, I'd better get back to the revising. This course is a bit intense. Talk to you all soon xxxx

*Waddles off to give Miss T the last of the welsh cakes*

Welshie said...

Oh bloody hell it's a new page. Noooo. Sticks dragon's head back on and goes into hiding :(

RIP Michael Blosil
:(

Marie Osmond's son, Michael Blosil, 18, died Friday evening after jumping from his downtown Los Angeles apartment, according to law enforcement.

TMZ is reporting that Michael left behind a note that said he intended to commit suicide due to a lifelong battle with depression.
The singer's rep released a statement on her behalf saying, "My family and I are devastated and in deep shock by the tragic loss of our dear Michael and ask that everyone respect our privacy during this difficult time."

Condolences to the family, and a swift, safe journey home, Michael.

Anonymous said...

It's tragic isn't it 12:59. For him, his family and all who knew him. He was so young and seemed to be doing good after his stint in rehab. I guess he wasn't able to permanently slay his dragons any other way. :(

Anonymous said...

There's always another way. Nothing is too bad not to be able to be fixed.

Anonymous said...

That's easy for people like you and I to say. People looking in from the outside.
But for too many people, young and old, it's not that easy. For some it's the only thing left to do. The only way to end the pain is to end their life.
We need to find more effective treatments for clinical depressions.

Anonymous said...

Then, maybe those treatments would help stop people ending their lives.

Goodnight.

Sorry, there was a delay in the first one posting so I wrote another. Blogger is having issues today, it seems.

If they are effective they probably would greatly decrease the suicide rate. The so called treatments we have now are obviously not working good enough.

good song.
sweet,sad & subject matter appropriate.

Whatcha doing out in the night time
Why'd ya' call me on the phone
Your mama can't solve your problems
When's daddy ever gonna get home
So you did your little move and cried
In the middle of a suicide

Don't close your eyes
Don't close your eyes
Don't sing your last lullaby

There's no one there to hold you
No one hears your scream
You live life up and down
your nightmares are your dreams
I know it's lonely when your hanging 'round
Don't ya' take it lying down - no, no
Hold on - Hold on tight
I'll make everything all right
Wake up - Don't go to sleep
I pray the lord your soul to keep

Don't close your eyes
Don't close your eyes
Don't sing your last lullaby

Don't close your eyes
Don't close your eyes
Don't sing your last lullaby

belly piercings at 14 can look slutty unless it's part of your culture. most older people feel that way. it's unfortunate.
maybe you can talk your niece into waiting til she's 17.

A sense of humor... is needed armor. Joy in one's heart and some laughter on one's lips is a sign that the person down deep has a pretty good grasp of life.

Hey everyone

Anima it's always so nice to see you. I miss you woman! About your question well I'm sorta torn on this one. I wouldn't let my girls pierce anything other than their ears until they were 18. They wanted to of course. However now that 2 of them have reached that age only one has pierced her belly button. The other decided she didn't really want to. I have the same problem with tattoos. They wanted to get them and of course since I have them they always point that out. LOL However when I point out that I didn't get one until I was in my 40's they really can't use that excuse. And only one now has a tattoo. I guess in my opinion 17 is a fair age set as an age to decide. Okay that's just my take on it for whatever it's worth.
