guts

It is interesting when you get a fresh perspective of yourself from a new acquaintance. Even at this reasonably accomplished age, I am still able to find myself anew.

Recently, I have been fortunate to gain the friendship of an interesting character. A smart, quick-witted, young “old chap” of a guy whose creativity and open-minded ideals speak volumes for his generation. At his age I was not nearly as wise, worldly, cultured, present, or relevant as he is. Even now his intellect far exceeds my own, and his ability to perceive others astounds me. He is very deliberate with his words, often taking what seems to me to be far too long to respond to my often off-kilter banter. But always following his reflection, he delivers an astute, provocative discourse on whatever topic I had mindlessly rambled into. Seriously, the guy can talk me under the table…and that is saying something.

And I must admit he is a bit off, as well. Regardless, or perhaps in spite of those facts, I find him very interesting.

As it goes with most new friendships there is the crush period. The time where everything about the new friend is fascinating and we often try to find a bit of ourselves in our new pal. And so my new friend has attempted to find fascination in me, and has asked for the privilege (his term, not mine) of reading some of my writing. I initially waved him off, figured he would find what he wanted or give up. But, after the third very polite request, I obliged.

It is strange; I can write for an unknown audience without fear. I can put it out there for the world to read, all of it…without a second thought. Yet when I directly hand over a few poems to my new friend, I am paralyzed.

As I said, my new friend is very perceptive. So, when I stuffed a few of my poems in his hand and continued on about the weather, he immediately detected my insecurity. He saw in my rushed speech and downcast eyes that I was nervous. And while I waited for him to speak, to interrupt my prattle, I reeled. He placed the pages face down on the table, then said “Ah yes, I see I was correct. You are an exhibitionist and shy, both.”

Which really put me to thought…what purpose am I serving with these characteristics, if characteristics do in fact serve us?

I suppose that those opposing characteristics, that in my case are so apparently extreme, benefit each other. I can only imagine that my unchecked exhibitionism would undoubtedly lead me to my depraved end, and that my need to slap the world in the face keeps me from becoming a total shut-in.

p.s. what you got in you; what it takes.

Hello Everyone

Well right now it’s a lovely 8.6 degrees. I’m not sure what good that .6 really is but at this point I’ll take any little bit of warmth.

Ergo and TJ – Yep I did have problems with the Net last night. And I really just couldn’t make myself go outside to brush off snow from the dish. However in answer to your questions my hair adventure did not turn into an epic fail. Sure I did lose a bit of hair to the tape (good thing I have thick hair) but it came out like I wanted it.

Today is a catch up work at home day. I have book orders to fill and prices to change on my online store stock. I won’t have to go out into the frozen tundra until later this afternoon.

Hope everyone has a good day. Take care.

Just a quick hello

Ergo hope you are having a nice warm day. Wish I was there!

*waves to TJ* For when you show up later.

*waves to Mayo and SS* Just because!

Take care everyone

Watching The Soloist. I really enjoyed the book and the movie is excellent. I'd highly recommend it.

For me, in Kansas, it is so hard to believe that there are places in LA like depicted in the movie and the book. How sad that in a place where there is so much opulence there are people living on the streets. Yes, I know this kind of thing is everywhere but seeing it makes me want to do something. It makes me want to do something to make a difference. I really wish I knew what I could do.

ergoproxy said...

sorry TJ had a computer freeze

mine is artificial and between it and the cats the bottom branches are less and less "festive" lol

toujours said...

i helped my stepdad put the tree away today and we couldn't disassemble it completely...somehow we wedged the two lower sections permanently together. so now it doesn't fit in the box.

we ended up wrapping it in an old sheet and lashing it with clothesline. the top part went into a pillowcase.

it was like disposing of a corpse (decapitated head and all). lol

hey, i did that thing with the timtam tonight, using it like a straw with hot cocoa? oh man! that was goooood! and the way it just collapsed from the inside? very cool.

TJ has joined the "Tim Tam Slam" club!!
it is good isn't it, you can quickly go through a whole packet doing that (not that I have, well not alone anyway)

and your poor tree! an unceremonious end to it's xmas season, but just don't load it into the trunk of your car at night or anything, could look bad

ergoproxy said...

I used to use that to impress boys in math class, there was always one who'd start with "well what's a 20 sided figure" etc
so I'd throw a couple of names and say "look it up"

there are some awesome names for polyhedrons, you can get net patterns to make a lot of them too, if you ahve the patience

toujours said...

i've seen the models people make out of cardstock, they're always so lovely, like a type of snowflake, almost. i for sure wouldn't have made it through geometry without all the modelmaking! lol

ergoproxy said...

it does make it a lot more fun, plus people can picture them better once they've made a few. Mentally picturing what you are dealing with is a huge advantage, but some people find it very difficult.

It was always an easy lesson too, paper scissors glue and then they'd colour them and we'd hang them up like mobiles

toujours said...

see, i liked that part of geometry, but once we got to proofs i was lost.

ergoproxy said...

yeah I was the same in high school, I only get it now, I think, because I was older when I tried it again, plus I had a different environment the second time, as a teacher. I used to have one of the more experienced math teachers explain stuff to me sometimes the morning before I had to teach it!
I'd have their notes with me, plus sometimes I'd just say "hang on, I stuffed that up, I'll recheck that and we'll do it next lesson"
A lot of stuff just clicked when it was re-explained, thank goodness, as I had no choice about having to teach it!

toujours said...

you know, i've found that's true for me too -- that sometimes i have to explain something to someone else in order to really understand it.

but there's things i like about numbers, and then sometimes they just go all spinny in my head. lol

ergoproxy said...

oh yes I remember pin codes and stuff by the pattern they make on the keypad

give me a choice and I'd take words any time

toujours said...

definitely! :)

time for me to shove off now, just my luck and i'll dream about math!

Oh Elena will you please stop sending the snow over to Wales. We don't need any more!!!
Seriously though, we've had so much snow here that all the schools in North Wales are closed. People are stranded in their cars and can't make it home.
Yesterday was my sister's birthday. We were supposed to go to her favourite restaurant for a meal but we could hardly get out of the front door! So instead I sat in my kitchen eating Beans on Toast. Boo hoo.

The couple that got married last week are stuck in Manchester Airport. They should be on their honeymoon in the Maldives. What a shame.

Welsh anon, we have the same snow problems as you. I am currently waiting for a delivery of a new table and chairs which I'm sure won't arrive today. There are no buses or anything going up the main road. We have had 8 inches of snow. Yesterday my sis and mum were on their way to work when they recalled all the buses in Sheffield. They were almost all the way to town and had to walk home. It took them 4 hours. Luckily there was somewhere on the way they could stop and get a drink and snacks and that was the hospital. It's even worse today.

I'm off now as I'll go and meet mum as she can only get a bus part way home.

Catch you all later xxx

I know I've explained what that means to us folks here in the New Orleans metropolitan area before (probably twice before since last night was the third Twelfth Night in blogbelieve).

Anyway, for those who may be forgetful or missed it in the past; Twelfth Night is the OFFICIAL start of Carnival Season here! YAY!!!

Of course, it is a bit more than that! January 6th is also known at King's Day or The Feast of the Epiphany.

THANK YOU!!! I hope your sister and other family members are doing much better and getting well!

For all of you doing battle with the bitter cold and winter storms: Stay well, stay warm and stay safe!!!

We had a nice little heat wave today!! 45 degrees F felt HEAVENLY!!! Unfortunately, we will be back to freezing tonight and our forcast for tomorrow is:

Actual temp: 23 F
Will feel like: 7 degrees F

I don't like the sound of that. I don't like it at all. My southern blood is in need of antifreeze already!

Since I have been semi~hibernating I did get some more "pieces" done!

So, here are those colors and accoustics (earplugs not required for these sounds):

Or you can just view the thumbnails

Here! If you wanna!

That is all, for now! I think. Have a great day/night, everyone!!!

Just back from the post office. Mr E decided to take one of the back roads and boy was that a trip! The wind is wicked and most of the roads are blown shut. You really can't see the roads at all just blowing snow. Now they are saying the wind temp tonight will be -30. I'm seriously thinking they should just stop now. At this point what difference does it make?

Oh and Stormy drove home last night without a coat. She forgot it. Seriously how can you forget your coat when it's -4?

Good to see ya Wendy. I have to say the "Sounds of Snow" looks like the view out my window.

This is just crazy. Tomorrow night we are supposed to break the record for cold. Personally I'd rather not.

Unfortunately she was told that she had the most aggressive type of cancer so we just hope that it was caught in time. She won't know if the treatment has been successful until June. Such a long time to wait.

As for my cousins well Hazel has just completely gone to pieces. She won't speak to anyone. It's so sad. Gwen on the other hand is feeling a bit more positive.

Thinking of your cousins, I hope they manage as well, I'm sure they have a lot of family support, your caring shows, as it is a fact that any serious illness, especially cancer makes people confront so many thoughts and fears within themselves, as well as the worry for the person suffering from it, it is a very difficult time for everyone concerned so praying for you and your whole family and really hoping that it'll be good news in June as well

but where and how did you get that drawing?!? so cool, i am impressed!

welsh anon, please let your your sister know that i am sending her good thoughts as well. while it's such a relief to be done with treatment, it doesn't feel like one's done yet, and that can be nerve-wracking! here's all my best that june brings good news with its bright days.

elena said...

Hey TJ

Pretty cool, isn't it?

ergoproxy said...

hi elena, it is a great drawing, lucky you

TJ things are good, though very very wet

elena said...

Things here are very cold, damn cold.

toujours said...

very cool, elena. :)

ergo, wet ain't so bad, especially if you have great galoshes. :)

toujours said...

oops! very cool the drawing, elena, not very cool the very cold. :)

ergoproxy said...

at the moment I just wear flip flops, easier to get on and off

it is nice and cool though, better than normal sweltering summer

toujours said...

that's good -- it's one thing i don't think i'll ever get used to, rain that's warm. cool weather and rain go together much better.

elena said...

I am so ready for winter to be over. This cold is insane. And now the wind is really picking up.

ergoproxy said...

well it is quite cool here now, I am actually considering slippers!

toujours said...

we're all keeping our finger's crossed over here, just hoping to get through january without a repeat of last year! otherwise, i'm still a fan of winter.

*cringes*

sorry! :)

ergoproxy said...

lol they are made with that knittting yarn that is multi colours and all shaggy, so they are super soft, black and hot pink and have a grippy sole so you don't skid about

ergoproxy said...

they only come up to my ankle, so they aren't long, otherwise I have black 3/4 pants and a grey black and white tshirt with a penguin on it, not really a matching ensemble

toujours said...

on the contrary, i think it shows a great sense of style!

i have these black and red striped socks i like to wear around the house. they aren't heavy duty or anything, i just like catching an occasional glimpse of stripey socks. makes me happy. :)

when i got up this morning i had a thought already waiting for me: today is a writing day.

i did my best to obey the subconscious command. mostly ended up researching, but since that stirs up all my plot questions and gets me to thinking, i consider it a day well spent.

well, for that plus that i went and played outside in the snow a little.

couldn't resist. *grin*

good night, mayo. hope you are doing well.

hope the snow doesn't make the drive home too bad

What contest was that anon? Mariah Carey's "acceptance speech" was the best thing to come out of that one she got breakout actress for

Anonymous said...

What a sad, boring empty place this is. Three or four women left saying the same things every day.

Which is better than the stalking that was done of the "EVIL" porchies though. All that's left .... the ones who let it go on.

Is Mayo ever coming back? What are the 4 or so of you hanging on for?

Anonymous said...

Personally I hope he doesn't come back. But I also hope he shuts this place down. It's a ghost town. Just depressing.

I also think he should have shut this shitty place down over a year ago and if not, then DEFINITELY after all the attacks on Kap and her family after her severe family losses.

What kind of monster would let that stuff go on? No one I want to know.....

Anonymous said...

Those are the nominees and winners from the people's choice awards. Mariah wasn't tipsy that night but her dress was waaaay tight.

Her explanation for the tipsy rambling speech at the Palm Springs Internat'l film awards.

i'm okay, ergo, though it's a bit of a blah night. how are you doing?

hi elena, glad to hear you had some business today!

elena said...

Nope the snow has stopped.

So what's new in the world of tomorrow?

elena said...

Hey TJ

We actually had a lot of business today which was a welcome change.

Took Mom with me today and she and I watched Star Trek. She really liked the movie.

sounds like a satisfyingly full day, ergo. it's always good crossing things off to-do lists.

ergoproxy said...

sure is TJ, shame the list always gets added to!

good to hear elena, people were really probably happy to be able to get out and what better to do than browse shops

very ergo, some lists just don't know when to stay all crossed off! very pesky.

"pesky" reminded me, Pecky has all her feathers now, so she is black and white speckles and not so ugly looking, she looks like a miniature of the other hens now

aw, ugly duckling turned into cute chicken?

she is :] she comes when she is called too, and we sometimes spend afternoons when the sun has moved off the back garden hunting grasshoppers with her, she loves them, so she gets the treat and she is earning her keep at the same time

Hello Mayo, SS, Elena, Ergo, TJ, MissT, Amy, Welsh A, other assorted folks!

How are you all tonight/today? Still well, warm and safe, I hope!

Did you all see the wonderful new video for “Heartkiller”? Well, I think it’s wonderful! There are lions and tigers and bears (and bunnies and birds and fox ~ and not just the foxy and oh so talented men of HIM) OH MY! And, there is a whole lotta red lighting!

Just scroll down a bit to see the HEARTKILLER video!!!

Needless to say, I LOVE it!!!

:D

TJ: I'm relatively well and good, thanks for asking how we're all doing!

I am a bit sad about Bre going back to college Sunday. She's been home for nearly a month and we're going to miss her ~ so darn much ~ again.

A big congratulations to all The People's Choice Awards winners. Paramore? Okay, if the people say so...

So, what's new with everyone?

Here's one of our Louisiana happenings.

The State of Louisiana had it's first execution, since 2002, last night.

Gerald Bordelon was "put to death" by lethal injection. This man was a monster.

He kidnapped, raped and murdered his 12 year old step daughter in 2002. He was on parole at the time. He had already been convicted and served time for sexual assualt. Twice.

His death sentence was carried out (judicially) swiftly because he waived his rights to appeals.

He said he did it and said if the opportunity to "do it" that day had not presented itself, he would have done it another day.

He also stated that he WOULD do it again if he ever had another opportunity.

Oh, and he apologized to his ex wife/the mother and other family members of his beautiful victim, Courtney LeBlanc.

~~Here's the story~~

Personally, I think justice was served (finally) and the world is just a tiny bit better today without a "man" like Gerald Bordelon using valuable oxygen and other precious resources.

That is all, for now.

Hugs and Love,
~Namaste~

Hello Elena and Ergo! Sorry for missing ya'll current conversation. Neither of you were here when I started typing my comment and tried and tried and tried to get it to post!

As I've mentioned, southern computers do not like freezing temps!

Ergo: YAY for Pecky and her feathers!

Elena: I hope the snow ceases soon!

Goodnight, everyone! Sweet dreams to one and all!!!

Elena: You're right! Heck, she'll be back for a few days next month for Mardi Gras!!!

I suppose it's time to start thinking about my costume, huh? I don't want to end up like last year... working on my petticoats and sheep with just 4/5 days to go!

Hmmm.... maybe I should just borrow one of your costumes!

;)

Okay, goodnight all! Have fun!

mayo,

i spent the afternoon doing story research, pulling out my old laptop and using it to take notes. it brought back memories...just seeing my desktop image from two years ago was enough to make me nostalgic for all those early nights spent on your blog.

it was a time capsule, a little container filled with my old world. even the f-key still sticks.

that was a happy world for me, those are wonderful memories. they always will be, no matter what. (just so you know.)

take care, mayo. sweet dreams.
