guts

It is interesting when you get a fresh perspective of yourself from a new acquaintance. Even at this reasonably accomplished age, I am still able to find myself anew.

Recently, I have been fortunate to gain the friendship of an interesting character. A smart, quick-witted, young “old chap” of a guy whose creativity and open-minded ideals speak volumes for his generation. At his age I was not nearly as wise, worldly, cultured, present, or relevant as he is. Even now his intellect far exceeds my own, and his ability to perceive others astounds me. He is very deliberate with his words, often taking what seems to me to be far too long to respond to my often off-kilter banter. But always following his reflection, he delivers an astute, provocative discourse on whatever topic I had mindlessly rambled into. Seriously, the guy can talk me under the table…and that is saying something.

And I must admit he is a bit off, as well. Regardless, or perhaps in spite of those facts, I find him very interesting.

As it goes with most new friendships there is the crush period. The time where everything about the new friend is fascinating and we often try to find a bit of ourselves in our new pal. And so my new friend has attempted to find fascination in me, and has asked for the privilege (his term, not mine) of reading some of my writing. I initially waved him off, figured he would find what he wanted or give up. But, after the third very polite request, I obliged.

It is strange; I can write for an unknown audience without fear. I can put it out there for the world to read, all of it…without a second thought. Yet when I directly hand over a few poems to my new friend, I am paralyzed.

As I said, my new friend is very perceptive. So, when I stuffed a few of my poems in his hand and continued on about the weather, he immediately detected my insecurity. He saw in my rushed speech and downcast eyes that I was nervous. And while I waited for him to speak, to interrupt my prattle, I reeled. He placed the pages face down on the table, then said “Ah yes, I see I was correct. You are an exhibitionist and shy, both.”

Which really put me to thought…what purpose am I serving with these characteristics, if characteristics do in fact serve us?

I suppose that those opposing characteristics, that in my case are so apparently extreme, benefit each other. I can only imagine that my unchecked exhibitionism would undoubtedly lead me to my depraved end, and that my need to slap the world in the face keeps me from becoming a total shut-in.

p.s. what you got in you; what it takes.

we are going to a friends for a party but not sure what's happening as we have had and are due to have a lot of rain
I assume it'll still be on as they have a huge machinery shed behind the house so we can be under cover

I'll give her a call tomorrow

what about you?

toujours said...

i think i'm just going to hang out, maybe do a little drinking *hehe*

my folks live way out in the country and the few acquaintences i have here live even further out, so socializing isn't easy.

but i have some definite plans for new year's day, though!

lol

my mom just poked her head in the door to say good night. she was all shiny, had a piece of trivia to share that she thought i would be surprised by....

mom: "did you know...*dramatic pause*..that bruce springsteen was from...*bigger dramatic pause*...new jersey???"

me: *goggle*
me: *giggle*

i had to explain to her that that's kinda one of the things he's known for. lol

ergoproxy said...

haha oh parents are funny sometimes

yeah this party won't be huge, as they are further out of town than us. It's for their workers and people like us who've done work for them, plus they just live up the road, lol

plus we have work in so it won't be a late night, DH is keen to get it done so we can go away

toujours said...

"just up the road"...meaning how long a drive? lol

it'll be nice to get together though. i haven't been to a proper new year's eve party in ages. maybe i will next year...in the meantime, you'll have to uphold the standards! *hee*

You're welcome for the quotes. :)

John Mellencamp and Melissa Etheridge did a good job with Born in the USA and Born to Run.

Eddie Vedder and Sting did fantastic jobs with their Bruuuuuce tributes.

Vedder's My City of Ruins was breathtaking and Sting's The Rising was inspired and inspiring.

Anonymous said...

The Mel Brooks tributes were great too. How can Jack Black in tights not be great.

ergoproxy said...

do you ever get your parents using the generic "that band you like"? Then you have to glean details to figure which one they mean?

Anonymous said...

Hi bloggers.
Bye bloggers. :)

toujours said...

hi and bye anon. :)

wait, i missed jack black in tights? aw, maybe i should've watched more of it tonight. that would've been very amusing!

it sounds like it was a very good show.

ergo, unfortunately (for my mom lol) when i was a teenager i chattered on about my favorite band to anyone who would spare an ear, and so to this day she remembers them extremely well! there was one song i played for a very, very long time on repeat; she still recognizes it to this day. lol

poor woman. :)

TJ this time "just up the road" is about 10 mins drive

toujours said...

oh! that really is just up the road then! sometimes in the countryside that phrase is not so accurate. lol

mine know older ones I liked but the newer ones they've been (probably fortunately for them) at a distance from repeated hearing, lol

ha i guess my folks are getting a second dose and a renewed familiarity since i've been here! really, we should feel sympathetic. *heh*

yep. mine get overdosed for short periods, then they can relax

I made them sit through a Muse video just so I could show them the type of jacket I wanted to find for DH
( we did find it too lol)

and I do get you on the "just up/down the road". I can say it meaning anything from a couple of minutes drive to an hour. Any further changes "the road" to "the coast". the "just" stops at about 4 hrs drive. lol
City people really don't like that phrase

toujours said...

wow, they must be very patient with you! lol

when i got the tbpid dvd (from elena! *grin*) i made them watch a little...and totally forgot how much gerard swears. lol! that was the fastest remote control work i've ever done!

he does rather doesn't he!

oh & that was the one and only time they watched it, and it was "see that one"... "hang on"... "there"... "hold on they show it again"... "see?".. etc until they said "ok I think we know what it's like now"
it was Starlight though, which is a great song
their tastes run more to classical and jazz

toujours said...

yeah, i don't even notice it anymore, but sitting there with my mom i suddenly regained my sensitivity! lol

my folks don't listen to a lot of music, but when they do it's country, bluegrass, and neil diamond. none of which is too bad. (in small doses lol)

ergo, i've been so engrossed in chatting with you and working on my end-of-the-year meme that i didn't realize what time it was until just now! it's not really all that late, but i'd better be getting to bed nonetheless. work has been extremely busy, and tomorrow promises to be more of the same!

mayo,

so i've fallen into the habit of posting that "40 questions about the year" meme that always floats around the blogosphere after christmas. last year things were too chaotic, and anyway, if i had been able to get online to post it, it most likely wouldn't have been pretty reading! last year wasn't a very optimistic time for me.

but then again, i don't really do it to toot my own horn, i post it more for me than for my flist. it's become a snapshot that helps me gauge the year. and it surprises me sometimes; this year i thought i had just spent it slogging through work, but when i had to list what i had done for the first time, the list ended up being a paragraph!

and there are always one or two questions that are difficult to answer, that i have to stop and dig for. they change, too, and which questions are the difficult ones each year is illuminating.

oh yes, make no mistake, it's pure livejournal navel-gazing! but still, i find myself answering those questions every year.

anyway, hope you're doing well, hope your questions aren't too difficult, and hope you have much to cherish from 2009.

good night, mayo, and sweet dreams.

Morning Everyone

Well we did get more snow (about 3 inches) Unfortunately the new snow is on top of some wicked ice. Yesterday it got into the 40’s so some of the snow we already had melted then when the temp dropped the wet turned to ice. Oh well, that’s winter.

I was very saddened to hear about The Rev’s death. I do not know a lot of Avenged Sevenfold’s songs but I really love “Dear God” and the video for the song. So sad to loose someone that young.

Noting much going on here other than the snow. Stormy is slowly getting better (but if you ask her she will deny). Being young she just had it in her head she would bounce right back from the surgery.

Lewis – If you happen by and read this I really need to speak to you. Call anytime you can, okay. Just leave a voice mail and I’ll call you back. I need to thank you for the gifts, especially the “last one”. It totally touched my heart. Thank you.

Okay then I’m off to try to unbury my car. I have to get to the post office to mail book orders.

Take care, everyone and have a great day!

Well, I'm off to the chippy to get tea, catch you all later.

Nice to see you MissT

But I just have to ask - What's a chippy?

elena said...

I remembered something else.

I want to recommend the movie “Running With Scissors”. I watched it the other night and while I don’t think it’s nearly as good as the book it was still pretty entertaining. The guy who plays Augusten is a great actor. You know it’s weird but I can’t think of a lot of movies that I think are better or even equal to the book. But I try to watch the film and think “If I hadn’t read the book would I like this?”

And while it was a good movie I’d like to suggest reading the book. Burroughs really has an outstanding way with words.

Okay now I’m off to get shit done. Take care.

hey mayo,

something kinda cool happened today. i took a call from a customer who was having difficulty with her order (our website is all glitched up right now). i helped her navigate our site, we chatted, and then friendly chatting became an amazing, unexpected, encouraging conversation.

we discovered all these similarities, starting with us both being named after our fathers, and covering attitudes about art and life and creativity and adventure...

she's older than me, but there seemed to be no gap at all. we talked for the longest time -- almost an hour i think! toward the end of the conversation, she told me that she was so pleased we had talked, that hearing someone else say things that she thought only she believed was encouraging to her. it was for me, too.

it was like the fates wanted us both to have that conversation, a revitalizing synchronicity, a little spark of magic to jumpstart our hopes and dreams.

it was a lovely little gift to receive, and carry into the new year.

anyway, hope you have a good night, mayo, and sweet dreams.

Hi all,

Elena, so glad it made it to you! (And it was aimed at your heart, dear) I will try and call this coming day, or maybe I will catch you Next Year! ;) (The 1st) We're a little touch and go at home, at the moment. But I am glad Stormy is less pukey -and still quite herself! Ha! Hope you all stay warm!

Ergo, thank you for what you said. Right back at you! I had to look up Perth, as I read about the fires. So glad you are so far from there! (Like, really, really far!)I hope you don't float away now instead! Here's hoping things settle down there for you guys, Ergo.

Wendy, very glad to hear that of your friend. May he stay strong for the coming year and after, as well.

Miss T, thanks. Like I said, I'll give Mr. Tut your regards when we make it there. ;p Hope you are getting closer to that Police Uniform! I think it shall look awesome on ya!

And Miss Possum! What the hell is a kumara!? It's half pretty and half makes me think of Barney poo. No really, what is that thing? And thank you much for the comment! Of course the best to you and yours as well. And I think I shall be saving up my wicked indulgences for a fun day this coming year. I feel this last year owes me a due-over! ;p

Welsh, I hope you are hanging in there. It is a pleasure to read you, when I can manage. May the very best find you and your family, this coming year.

I hope everyone is doing well. I believe '09 can screw itself into a dark dank hole and rot! Thank you! Here's to a better fuckin year Lovely's! Happy New One, all ladies, anons, Mayo and SS <33

Hello everyone. Extends hand to Lewis, shakes hand, 'very pleased to meet you Lewis, I'm Welshie.'

Well we got snow. Lots of it. I went to a wedding on Tuesday and had a lovely time. It was a young couple from the village. The groom had lost his parents within six months of each other when he was a ten year old boy. He'd been brought up by various aunts and grandparents. Well as you can imagine there wasn't a dry eye is the house when he started thanking them. Most of the villagers were invited to the evening reception, so four bus loads of us set off in the snow! The village was a burglar's paradise, there was no one home!
Of course more snow had fallen whilst we were dancing, eating, drinking, chatting, fighting, more drinking. Just a typical welsh wedding! Well we damn well didn't get home because of all the snow.

Well it's New Year's Eve. Tonight I'm going to a party at the local community centre. Boring you might think. Think again. Every New Year's Eve since the millennium celebrations we've had a party there. Everyone turns up from tiny babies, surly teenagers, twenty/thirty year olds to the elderly. You see, a lot of families can't go out either because they have no babysitters or some people live alone and have nowhere to go. Everyone takes their own beer and a plate of food. It's nice that no one is lonely on New Year's Eve isn't it? It never finishes until about 4 a.m.
The worst part is having to clear up the following day!! Everyone with massive hangovers!

Have to go and make some sandwiches, luckily no cooking involved for me!

Oh Mayo bach where are you hiding?Good god I hope I didn't traumatize you with my singing the other day! Surely it wasn't that bad!!

Well I'd like to wish you all a Happy New Year.
BLWYDDYN NEWYDD DDA.

(psst! Elena it meant 'Get well soon Stormy')

Take care.

Happy New Year's/New decade's Eve Mayo, SS, Sweetcheeks, Lewis, Elena, TJ, J and L, Martha, Amy, everyone who hasn't "rung/whistled/blown" in 2010 yet!!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR/New decade Possum, Cupcake, Ergo, MissT, Welsh Anon, all New Zealand, Australia, UK, Germany and Finland folks!!!!!!

WOW! Where did 2009 go? Where did the decade go? Time really doesn't wait for anyone, does it? It ticks and tocks away and before you know it... a new decade is born.

Something else is reborn with every New Year celebration: HOPE!

Hope that the New Year will be even better and more fullfilling than the year we bid farewell.

Hope we will greet all challenges with courage and wisdom.

Hope we will have the strength to remove or climb any obstacles we encounter along our paths.

Hope all those we hold dear will remain in or regain good health.

Hope we and all those we love will be just a little better, just a little happier in the new year.

Hope for ourselves, our families and friends... for all those we love and care about.

I "hope" all those things for my friends here!

Wishing you all a year (and decade) filled with hope, strength, courage, wisdom, good health and happiness!

Lewis: Thank you, again! I'm hoping 2010 is a much, much better year for you. I know you had a "rough" 2009...

*hugs Lewis*

3:28 ~ Now, that would be quite a way to ring in the New Year!!! Being pulled over by veteran Jefferson Parish police officer Steven Seagal!!!! That man is quite an imposing figure!

Enjoy the celebrations, everyone!!! Be safe out there!!!

ergo: gardenburgers

yum!

i used to serve mine with a homemade red onion jam. :)

the thing i like about them (besides their taste!) is that most commercial veggie burgers are made mostly from soy, and while i love miso and soy sauce and tofu, i don't care to eat soy in any of its modern processed forms. but the gardenburger is just good stuff, all smooshed together into a patty! *hee*

ergoproxy said...

oh they do look nice!
I'm not real keen on soy so I never get the burger things and such, but they look very yummy. Wouldn't be hard to do yourself either, maybe smooshed chickpeas or lentils could go in too

I may have to try that!

BG and I are doing some cooking today, we have Porcupines (balls of miced meat with rice, cooked in tomato soup) in the slow cooker, she did the smooshing and rolling and poured it all in, for dinner. Now it's chocolate cupcakes, she's just mixed it all. I have 2 loaves of bread rising as well, one large and one small, the small one is to have with the porcupines.

toujours said...

and now it's my turn! happy new year! 2010 is looking pretty nice! :)

toujours said...

chickpeas would be delish, you could do a hummus-inspired burger! the thing to watch though is that the homemade ones tend to be looser. i used to partially mash the rice (the couple of times i tried making my own) to encourage the gluten to glomp.

there are some great recipes out there for diy veggie-rice burgers. have you ever checked out allrecipes.com?

I have done some from my Charmaine Solomon vegetarian cookbook (which is a fantastic book, I usually base it on lentils
the ingredients in the garden burgers are a bit different and I do like the idea of all the mixed mushrooms, but yeah you'd have to moosh the rice, maybe really overcook it and let it go cold? Rice tends to glug up more as it cools, brown rice is notorious for being a bit harder than white

I often make a skillet of just a tin of tomatoes, tin of chickpeas, corn kernels, peas, onion and you can flavour it either a bit italian, or indian as your mood takes you, chuck in tins of any other beans if you like, stir in spinach if you have it, eggplant or whatever, and have it with bread for dinner, you can cook eggs in it too, or chopped boiled egg if you want added protein.
It easy as most stuff is just in tins or in the freezer.
Tinned beans are such good quality and so much easier than soaking and boiling

ergoproxy said...

my yard has wallabies in it outside the window, mum and baby

:]

toujours said...

i agree on the subject of canned beans...all you have to do is rinse them well and there you go! i used kidney beans quite a lot, they were nice and meaty without being..well, meat! that skillet dish you make is similar to something i'd do with chickpeas, tomatoes and spinach. it's so good, such a tasty combination. :)

and of course, if you add rice, you don't need to add any extra protein. :)

toujours said...

oh ergo! you'll never guess what i saw in the grocery store today! i thought of you immediately. :)

pepperidge farm timtams

i didn't buy them, but i think i will next time. i wonder if they're just as good?

ergoproxy said...

rice is nice with it, but you should try making a hollow and cracking an egg in, then just let it set, so it's still runny inside, and it all mixes in as you eat it, mmmmmmm

I always have kidney beans too I make a tinned tomato, mexican seasoned sauce with kidney beans then layer it over rice and put grated cheese on top and bake it, or wrap it in tortillas and put salsa on top and bake it

(you can make the same with meat in too of course)

Beans are just so yummy, I always have split peas and red and brown lentils in the cupboard too

ergoproxy said...

you haz Tim Tams!!

I just had a look at Pepperidge is a sister company of Arnotts, who make Tim Tams, so I would assume they are pretty much the same
however I did find an taste test by a traveller that says they are a bit different, you have to get some and tell me how they compare as you ahve had the original :]

toujours said...

oh that does sound good! when i have a kitchen of my own again, i definitely try the egg trick. :)

over here there's a new year's tradition of eating black eyed peas on new year's day for luck. there are various stories about its origin, mostly tracing it back to the south during the civil war era (i'm dubious, but who knows).

i grew up with that tradition, so in addition to the beans you mentioned, i always had a jar of dried black eyed peas in my cabinet, and on new year's day i would take the last of the ham from our christmas dinner and cook it with brown rice and black eyed peas and chopped onion...it's called hopping jhn, and it was always so good i said it was like eating candy!

toujours said...

i will definitely give you a report! that's good to know it's the same company (in the same family), that makes it seem more authentic. :)

ergoproxy said...

I have heard of black eyed peas but only from American tv shows
I don't know if we get them easily here, but it sounds tasty

toujours said...

they're good, but when i was a kid i hated them lol. my mom made me eat at least a spoonful every year, to satisfy the tradition.

if customs will allow, would you like me to send you some?

ergoproxy said...

if they were tinned it should be ok, dried beans I don't think would be allowed, anything that isn't processed ad potentially viable isn't allowed in

ergoproxy said...

oops, which would mean, I would love to have some if you can :]

I will send some more tim tams too, so you can compare properly

toujours said...

whoops! just realized it's definitely time to go to bed, seeing as how i'm sitting here with my eyes closed! lol

good night ergo, good talking with you and sharing the new year with you!

toujours said...

oh! we were typing at the same time!

I actually went back to last new year's blog and it was bustling! I was only a lurker then but I have to say I do miss those days when there'd always be someone here. I know I'll get flamed for saying it but I do miss the good old days!! It would be lovely if some of the bloggers came to visit once in a while. I know that things have happened off this blog that I'm not aware of but there's no harm in wishing it was different is there. New Year, New Start?

Well Ergo, Martha, I watched David Tennant's last episode of Doctor Who. All I'll say is get the tissues out!

Anonymous said...

I know I'll get flamed for saying it but I do miss the good old days!!

What makes you think you'll get flamed Welshie?

Alot of people miss old bloggers & the days of being about to discuss things without having accusations hurled their way.

I think when Mayo said Done he meant done.

I'm disappointed too. I was looking forward to reading Mayo's end of the year post. 15 is such a drab # to end the year with.

Welsh anon said...

Oh hello anon. I was just tucking into a box of chocies when I had a coughing fit and had to go and get a glass of water! God I thought I was dying!

Well you know sometimes I feel I'm on the outside because I don't know what went on behind the scenes as it were.
I'll say it again I like everyone here and I wish i could've had a chance to speak to some of the other bloggers but I was so stupid and shy that I didn't want to start a conversation.

elena said...

Hello everyone

Just got home from a very full day. Stormy is feeling much better so we went to see Avatar then went shopping.

Welsh anon said...

By the way when did Mayo say Done. Is he not coming back? (bottom lip is quivering)

Mayo os gwelwch yn dda tyrd yn ol. :(

Welsh anon said...

Hi Elena. I didn't see you there. I'm glad Stormy's better. You went shopping? Ooh, did you buy anything nice?

elena said...

Hi Welshie

Stormy found some clothes she just had to have LOL

I bought lip gloss. I just wasn't in the mood to shop but she was and it was nice to see her feeling better so I just went along.

Welsh anon said...

Aah, you're a good mum Elena. They're lucky to have you.

elena said...

Have you seen Avatar Welshie?

Welsh anon said...

No Elena I haven't. Is it good? What's it about?

elena said...

The movie is visually stunning. We saw it in 3-D, which was great. However the story line kinda reminded me of the old movie FernGully.

Welsh anon said...

I hardly ever go to the cinema Elena. The nearest one is an hour's drive away. Well actually there is a small one nearby but honestly the films are so old. It's a running joke here that they'll be showing E.T. there in the near future!!! haha.

ergoproxy said...

hello!

Hi welshie
hi elena

elena said...

Hello Ergo

Welsh anon said...

Ergo! I watched David Tennant's last episode of Dr Who tonight. Boo Hoo!

ergoproxy said...

good to hear Stormy is feeling better

I haven't seen Avatar but a friend wants to see Sherlock Holmes one night so we'll ditch the families and go in together in the next couple of days

ergoproxy said...

I saw you said (just reading back now)

I heard it was pretty intense, I'll miss him!!
Should be on here soon

elena said...

Oh I want to see Sherlock Holmes

Welsh anon said...

Sorry I was distracted. I was watching telly! There's a concert to celebrate Karl Jenkins' birthday on the Welsh chanel now. Just listened to Dies Irae followed by a breathtaking performance of Ave Verum Corpus sung by Rhydian Roberts and Rebecca Evans. God it was absolutely beautiful!
Elena am I right in saying that your eldest daughter is a classical singer?

Welsh anon said...

Just been on Youtube and watched Ave Verum Corpus again but this time sung by Bryn Terfel and Katherine Jenkins. I remember a few years ago standing next to Bryn Terfel at an international Rugby Match. Lovely bloke. Mind you when he started singing he nearly burst my eardrum!! Then to make matters worse when Wales scored a try he jumped up and landed on my foot and he's a BIG man! God I was limping for days.

ergoproxy said...

sounds lovely welshie, I love the welsh male voice choirs, just totally amazing, gives you chills

ergoproxy said...

google imaged Bryn, and now I know who you mean! I've seen him on tv and I imagine he'd be pretty loud close up, and yep your poor foot!

elena said...

Yep Welshie

Flighty my oldest is the opera singer.

Welsh anon said...

Welsh Male Voice Choirs are a National Treasure here Ergo. Have you ever listened to 'Mil o Leisiau'; a Thousand Voices. Aargh! When all the choirs are assembled and they sing the Welsh National Anthem you truly think that you're in heaven and your heart is absolutely bursting with pride. Such a small nation but such wonderful singers.

I thought I was right Elena. I'm sure she sings beautifully. She might get to sing with Bryn Terfel one day. You never know.

Well I have to go now. It's 1 a.m. here. It was lovely to speak to you Elena, Ergo and anon. Hope to speak to you soon.

Mayo I hope this isn't the last we've seen of you. I never got to say 'shwmai' to you :(
Damn it there's me again innit always bloody late for the party.

Take care everyone.

Ta ta

elena said...

You take care Welshie. It's always so nice to chat with you. Sweet dreams.

THE MUM TEST

I was out walking with my 4-year-old daughter. She picked up something off of the ground and started to put it in her mouth.
I took the item away from her and I asked her not to do that.
'Why?' my daughter asked.
'Because it's been on the ground; you don't know where it's been, it's
dirty, And probably has germs,' I replied.
At this point, my daughter looked at me with total admiration and asked,
'Mum, how do you know all this stuff? You are so smart.'

I was thinking quickly and replied, 'All mums know this stuff. It's on
the Mum Test. You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Mum.'

We walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, but she was evidently
pondering this new information.......

'Oh.....I get it!' she beamed, 'So if you don't pass the test you have
to be the dad.'
'Exactly,' I replied with a big smile on my face.

ergoproxy said...

bye welshie, good to see you too, sweet dreams

elena said...

LOL Ergo

I love the Mum Test

elena said...

I really need to find out something about Avatar because we missed the first few minutes. I wanna know how far into the future this is supposed to be.

ergoproxy said...

good isn't it!

Anonymous said...

2154

elena said...

Anon is that an answer to my question about the movie?

Anonymous said...

yep

elena said...

Well thank you anon

So now I'm wondering if people that far in the future will still be making comments about "not being in Kansas anymore"

ergoproxy said...

thanks anon

so Avatar is good elena? I'd like to see it just cause it's in 3D

elena said...

Like I said Ergo it is visually stunning. But the story line is really predictable.

ergoproxy said...

hahaha things that survive the apocalypse, cockroaches and comments about Kansas!

Anonymous said...

:)

elena said...

LOL Ergo

yeah I guess that's right. Oh and bulldozes still make the same beep beep sound.

I don't mean to say it wasn't a great movie I guess I was just hoping for a bit more.

Anonymous said...

it had more to do with the wizard of oz

elena said...

I was thinking the movie is like a cross between FernGully and Star Wars.

Did you like the film anon?

ergoproxy said...

I think so too anon
so it must still be on reruns in 2154!
"things that survive the apocalypse, cockroaches and comments about Kansas...and the Wizard of Oz movie" lol

unfortunately so many movies just don't have very original storylines, there are only so many actual plots you can use, but some don't really get past the basic overused ones. Makes it a shame but like my dad has always said the majority of people just want colour and movement.

Anonymous said...

it was visually interesting with a not too challenging story line which left it open for future sequels

ergoproxy said...

did you know there is a psychology to making speeches to get people to clap when you want them to? Politicians and such use it all the time. People will clap like a Pavlovian response, because of tone and pauses, not because of what you said, then assume they agree because they clapped

it's a very odd thing

elena said...

Yes Anon that's what I thought - future sequels!

My hubby loved it but I'm thinking that had a lot to do with 9 feet tall women with blue boobs. LOL

And yes he did like they were in
3-D

ergoproxy said...

sorry, my mind went off on a tangent then
:]

I think Avatar went for strong visuals, like Transformers, and always good to leave it open for sequels, which I expect they are already making.

ergoproxy said...

O_O

9 ft, 3-D blue boobs??!!

take someone's eye out!

Anonymous said...

giant smurfs with blue boobs

elena said...

LOL Ergo

Yep they could. And when I told him I thought the movie was a bit too long and the only reason he liked it was the blue boobs he had to remind me that I loved Watchmen which was very long and had ..well a blue...uh yeah.

ergoproxy said...

I did just think of that elena!
like tit for tat (so to speak)

elena said...

LOL Ergo!!!

elena said...

I really can't wait for Alice in Wonderland with Johnny Depp. I think he will be wonderful as the Mad Hatter.

ergoproxy said...

that does look fabulous, probably not for kids though, looks very dark, as Tim Burton always is

elena said...

Yep you are probably right but since I have no kids to take to the movies it isn't a problem for me.

ergoproxy said...

at least not ones likely to have nightmares!

ooh the sun is out! makes a change!!

elena said...

Oh don't even say sun to me.

I swear I'm suffering from Light Deprivation . All day it was cloudy and looked like it would snow at any minute.

Anonymous said...

I'm going to have to go see Avatar.
Does it have as much to do with shame as the Wizard of Oz?

I heard Sherlock Holmes was excellent.

ergoproxy said...

that's how I've been feeling elena, only with rain, everything has been varying shades of grey all week

hi anon

elena said...

Howdy anon

elena said...

So how are you Anon?

Anonymous said...

Tired. You?

Anonymous said...

Wonder Wizard of oz

elena said...

I'm okay, thanks for askin'

But I just heard "he who loves blue boobs" moving around upstairs so I gotta go for a while. Gotta fix his dinner and send him out into the world.

Back later

elena said...

Oh just clicked on link. That is so cool anon.

ergoproxy said...

you had a big week anon?

see you later elena, say hi to mr E

Anonymous said...

Yes. You?

ergoproxy said...

not hugely, few things got cancelled due to rain which was a shame

toujours said...

hi, everyone. :)

i'm watching lord of the rings. i love that movie so much.

Does it have as much to do with shame as the Wizard of Oz?

what an interesting idea! i've never heard of that before; how do you mean, anon?

Anonymous said...

Who spent the day gorging on black eyed peas, cabbage and porK? Who spent the day on the sofa eating sushi, pizza or nachos and watching college football?

Who's watching the sugarbowl?

ergoproxy said...

hello TJ

toujours said...

hi there ergo. :)

i did none of those things, anon.

so get this: after all that talk about tradition and eating black eyed peas last night, my mom forgot to cook them! lol she was horrified, first time in practically decades she hasn't eaten black eyed peas on new year's day.

we're going to have them tomorrow, and hope for the best. lol

Anonymous said...

I have always found The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to be very much about shame.

Dorothy is ashamed she didn't realize how lucky she was to have the home she had.

The cowardly lion is ashamed of his perceived lacks courage.

The tin man is ashamed of his perceived lack of heart and passion.

The scarecrow is ashamed of his perceived lack of intelligence.

Shame, shame and more more. Until they realize what they thought they lacked was in them all along.

The courage, smarts and heart to destroy their wicked witches and find their own way back home.
:)

Goodnight.

ergoproxy said...

oh no TJ! and after you told me all about it! lol
Bet they'll be great when she gets to it

I didn't do any of that either anon, we don't have college football like you do & I don't watch it anyway
I am though watching Flashdance with BG

goodnight anon, interesting thoughts

toujours said...

oh, i see, anon! i hadn't looked at the movie form that angle before, interesting indeed! good night, and thanks for explaining. :)

yeah, she was so disappointed, ergo! she said she was fso focussed on getting up and watching the rose bowl parade and football, it completely slipped her mind to put them on to cook.

i reassured her that it's possible to not eat black eyed peas on new year's day and survive. lol

ergoproxy said...

I hope so TJ, the world isn't ready for such changes in routine!!

toujours said...

lol i am relatively sure that the apocalyse will not happen because of my mom's failure to cook and eat black eyed peas!

*knocks wood, just in case*

ergoproxy said...

lol

well seeing as I'm in tomorrow already I think we are pretty safe

toujours said...

see? there you go. :)

so what did/are you do/doing today, ergo? aside from watching flashdance. :)

ergoproxy said...

well there has been some sun so I have done a bit of washing, cleaning etc. It'll be good when things dry out as I can do the painting I want to do

Pecky is happy, she's in her cage lying in the sun one wing and leg stretched out, then rolls over
it's been a while since she's been able to. Oh she has almost all her proper feathers too, and she is a hen :]

toujours said...

it's always such a good feeling when you can have a day in which you get things done. i always feel insufferably self-satisfied. :)

pecky sounds like she enjoyed the day too!

ergoproxy said...

she is still doing it now, she wasn't real impressed with all the days of rain

I hope this means that the rain might go for a while, it's good to have but it gets a bit trying

Mayo

I have a story to share.

Last week while the world here was very white and I was pretty much stuck inside with a sick girl who’d gotten her tonsils removed one of my other daughters, who doesn’t live at home anymore, went missing. (fuck that’s a long sentence)

Anyway when I say missing what I mean is this…I usually talk to them everyday. It makes me feel better to think I know what’s going on in their lives. Not that I really do but that false sense of hope helps. So when one day went by and I tried calling and the calls went directly to voice mail I started to worry. I asked the other sisters if they knew anything but nope they didn’t. Well that’s when the hard part of being a mom kicked in. I didn’t know if I should be worried or pissed. Especially on day 2 when she still didn’t answer. See there were several ways of looking at it. Perhaps she turned her phone off, perhaps she didn’t pay her phone bill and they turned it off. So I didn’t just wanna be pissed because in the back of my mind I’m always terrified something bad happened that she had no control over.

It turned out her phone was broken and of course she didn’t think to tell me, I mean after all I’m just her mom. She really didn’t understand why I was upset. I’m just supposed to know things are fine, she’s a big girl and can take care of herself. I’m just supposed to know these things. Yeah, right!

So are you getting why I’m telling you this story? Not hearing from someone you care about is pretty fuckin’ hard. You can tell yourself there is nothing to worry about but the fact that you are worrying just pisses you off because chances are good there is no reason to worry so then you wonder why that other person doesn’t understand you are worrying and then you move into pissed off again and yet…can’t help it you still worry. (Holy shit that was longer than that first sentence) I’m going to bed!

Night Mayo

mayo,

tonight i watched the first of the lotr trilogy, they are particular favorites of mine.

the fellowship of the ring came out right at the time i was acknowledging that i had something going on that a doctor needed to check out. when we finally got to the theater to see it, i had a doctor's appontment looming on the horizon. i wouldn't be diagnosed for a couple of months, but i already knew it was something real, and something wrong.

the scene in the mines of moria where frodo and gandalf are talking affected me strongly. it still does, and watching it tonight it brought back the memory of watching it for the first time.

it was such a long time ago now. i was surprised to realize that, and remembering the person i was at the beginning of the decade and the person i am now is something astonishing. so much has changed.

there and back again, except you never return quite the same, do you?

good night, mayo. take care.

I had a dream last night about Sdock and Smoke. I never usually remember my dreams but this one I do.
I dreamt that they were taking me for a ride on their golf cart! Smoke was driving and we were laughing and joking and guess what, they could speak Welsh!!

I hated seeing Sdock so sad when her relationship broke up. She's such a lovely person and I wished that I could've just hugged her and made her feel just a teeny weeny bit better. I hope that everything is better for her and that she's happy.
Anyway if anyone still speaks to Sdock and Smoke would you tell them that Welshie says 'shwmai'.

'Shwmai' anon. I have to say I prefer Queen to The Beatles, but my favourite Beatles song is Fool on the Hill.

Got to go now and get a few things done. World Darts Championship is starting today. Yeah!
