At the Home

I hate to see you
When you're falling apart
Can't you start over, again?

Elizabeth crumbles
Alone in her chair
Keeps her windows shut
To keep out the air

Elizabeth crumbles
Alone in her bed
Spends all her pastime
Mulled in her dread

What keeps her living
Is her fear of being
Anywhere other than here
So they’ll feed her too much
Or it’s never enough,
Then it's fuck you
“Get the hell out of here!"

Elizabeth stumbles
Over everything I've said
Pining words are useless
Pushed round in her head

The mystery was my bravery
I never knew what I'd get
Will it be her fear or regret?
Her confusion my denial?
Walked her shoes a while
Now she can’t turn back
So she said then she’ll stay
And I will walk away

Elizabeth mumbles
Over and over my name
Forgetting tomorrow
Will never be the same

She’s repeating her beating
Did you bring her a drink?
Why are you leaving?
What the hell do you think?
That she’ll fuck you
To get the hell out of here

Elizabeth tumbles
Out onto the floor
With an abandon of reason
It is herself abhorred

She sat alone in her room
Pouring over her gloom
Never got out of her chair
And they don't even care
Now that they’ve all receded
Into the ground or fleeted
To the wormholes
And woodwork back there

You'll find repair
Where that memory
Becomes illusory

Look, again?

p.s. in the end it is what you think you will get.

er, okay, anon. thanks for the tip.

so, get this! today we had a guy come into the shop (with his wife, we hardly ever get any men coming in willingly on their own lol) who had lived in paducah until he was a young man, and then moved out west in the 60's. he was nice, and was asking about new buildings and stuff, and told us that he used to work across the street and would come into our shop for lunch all the time. it really was a men's club back then, mostly had rivermen as customers, and offered pretty solid and cheap food, stuff like beans and other simple stuff.

it was cool to have that story confirmed by someone in person!

How many people here have googled Mayo?

Mayo should really start bitching about that. Poor victim Mayo being google stalked. Leave him alone. Just leave him alone you mean, nasty, creepy bloggers.

mayo,

i helped a teenager pick out the fabric for her first quilt today. her mom is one of our regulars, and brought her daughter in, and let her loose.

at first, i wasn't sure the fabrics she was choosing were going to make a harmonious quilt, there were some pretty glaring clashes in the mix! i tried to steer her a little, but for the most part it's important to listen to the customer and help them get the fabric that truly makes them happy.

we walked back and forth through the store for an hour, pulling bolts and laying them out on the table, moving them around, rearranging them and bringing in new bolts...

and the end result is going to be a very vibrant and uniquely beautiful quilt, it truly will be. she picked two different kinds of purples, violets and fuschias, and greens and light blues. it was a disaster until the very end, and somehow it all came together. the girl was very satisfied, and i was, too. her quilt is going to have such a fresh energy to it.

it was a good reminder that you never can know how something is going to turn out until it's done, in art as well as in life. every project has its ugly phase, every situation times when nothing is clicking. it's important to do what ss told us, a long time ago: pactum serva.

and even if it's just an effect of my pollyanna self rising back to the fore, i'm still going to do my best to follow his advice, and the example from today.

good night, mayo. (i'm almost afraid to imagine what sort of fabric combinations you would pick out. *grin*)

Oh I want Mayo to make a quilt.

Speaking of quilts is it creepy that my favorite guilt I own is a funeral quilt?

step away from the quilt thoughts now Elena, it may get messy

yep those stains are hard to get out of that fabric.

elena said...

I've heard if you rub it too hard it grows larger.

ergoproxy said...

it can , then it can be really difficult to keep under cotrol
you really need to get it early and rub inwards from the edges

Yes Ergo that's true if not it will take over the whole bed. And then the inevitable, it ....

yeah, okay enough of the CC quilt.

ergoproxy said...

are you feeling CC quilt guilt?

wonder if it's big enough to cover a whole bed?

elena said...

Yes the CC quilt guilt got me

Oh and I'm sure it's not just for a twin bed. I'm thinking King size

ergoproxy said...

king size! well that's good, it's always annoying to have to keep yanking one from the side

elena said...

yeah that yanking causes problems. Well sometimes it does.

ergoproxy said...

I find it's always better to approach these issues head on, get it right the first time

now on a different topic, perhaps for after you've wrestled with your quilt
a friend emailed me this:

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE!!

4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
A small splash of vanilla extract and your favourite tipple
1 large coffee mug

Add dry ingredients to your largest mug and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well. Add the chocolate chips (if using), vanilla extract and a drop or two of your favourite tipple, then mix again.

Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts (high).
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!

Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.

EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous)
.

I don't know if it works, but I may need to try it

Mayo

So the whole quilt thing got me to thinking and remembering. And of course I’m gonna share these thoughts with you. As I said earlier my favorite quilt is one that was left to me by my grandma. I love it but my dad hated the thing.

Every summer I would spend time at my grandma’s house. She lived down in Southern Missouri (in the house Marlin Perkins grew up in). It was a beautiful old home full of antiques. Yep, that’s where I got my love of antiques. Grandma was a collector. Anyway upstairs in one of the bedrooms was this beautiful quilt. I would always choose that bedroom to stay in. Not that it was quilt weather by any means but just because I loved to fold the quilt and have it at the foot of the bed. If you don’t know a funeral quilt is made up of different fabrics that are chosen to represent different aspects of the departed’s life. This quilt has beautiful dark silks, velvets and lace. It’s a very unusual looking piece. Grandma had told me that she acquired it many years ago down South. The woman she purchased it from told her that it had been her grandma’s and that the woman had even picked out the fabrics for the quilt herself when she realized she was dying. Okay, I have no idea why a family member would ever part with something like that but they did. So some nights I would lay in bed and wonder about the quilt. I wondered what it would be like to know you are dying while choosing bits of fabric, fabric from you life. Several pieces I believe were once dresses, the beautiful patterns on the material make me think this. I wish I knew more about the history of the quilt but in a way not knowing gave me the opportunity to let my imagine run free.

So as I said earlier my dad hated the quilt. He thought it was creepy, calling it a death quilt. And while this really has nothing to do with the story I was reminded of something. My dad always had poor circulation and was always cold. He even was one of those people whose body temp was never 98.6. It was usually about 96 or 97. Anyway, when his health started to fail he asked my mom if she would make sure a quilt was put in his coffin when he died. She thought he was kidding at first but deep down she knew he wasn’t. So when Dad died before the coffin was sealed we put a quilt over his body. I’ve never told anyone that before. I know it sounds silly but I hope he liked it that we remembered. I didn’t want my daddy to think we forgot.

Okay, enough of the memories. Take care, and have a wonderful tomorrow.

Night Mayo

Midsummer

On nights like this we used to swim in the quarry,
the boys making up games requiring them to tear off  the girls’ clothes
and the girls cooperating, because they had new bodies since last summer
and they wanted to exhibit them, the brave ones
leaping off  the high rocks — bodies crowding the water.

The nights were humid, still. The stone was cool and wet,
marble for  graveyards, for buildings that we never saw,
buildings in cities far away.

On cloudy nights, you were blind. Those nights the rocks were dangerous,
but in another way it was all dangerous, that was what we were after.
The summer started. Then the boys and girls began to pair off
but always there were a few left at the end — sometimes they’d keep watch,
sometimes they’d pretend to go off  with each other like the rest,
but what could they do there, in the woods? No one wanted to be them.
But they’d show up anyway, as though some night their luck would change,
fate would be a different fate.

At the beginning and at the end, though, we were all together.
After the evening chores, after the smaller children were in bed,
then we were free. Nobody said anything, but we knew the nights we’d meet
and the nights we wouldn’t. Once or twice, at the end of summer,
we could see a baby was going to come out of all that kissing.

And for those two, it was terrible, as terrible as being alone.
The game was over. We’d sit on the rocks smoking cigarettes,
worrying about the ones who weren’t there.

And then finally walk home through the fields,
because there was always work the next day.
And the next day, we were kids again, sitting on the front steps in the morning,
eating a peach.  Just that, but it seemed an honor to have a mouth.
And then going to work, which meant helping out in the fields.
One boy worked for an old lady, building shelves.
The house was very old, maybe built when the mountain was built.

And then the day faded. We were dreaming, waiting for night.
Standing at the front door at twilight, watching the shadows lengthen.
And a voice in the kitchen was always complaining about the heat,
wanting the heat to break.

Then the heat broke, the night was clear.
And you thought of  the boy or girl you’d be meeting later.
And you thought of  walking into the woods and lying down,
practicing all those things you were learning in the water.
And though sometimes you couldn’t see the person you were with,
there was no substitute for that person.

The summer night glowed; in the field, fireflies were glinting.
And for those who understood such things, the stars were sending messages:
You will leave the village where you were born
and in another country you’ll become very rich, very powerful,
but always you will mourn something you left behind, even though
you can’t say what it was,
and eventually you will return to seek it.

There used to be two groups of people who did not get along well with each other.

One group are no longer here.

Let's just say, hypothetically, they gathered at another blog, think of it as a parallel universe; let's call it Mayo Light. Would that really be so bad?

Both groups would be free to shape the blog in a way that reflects their interests and personalities. One may have guidelines, one may not. One may discuss and try to interpret blog posts, one may not. One may include movie quotes and riddles, one may not.

Neither is right or wrong, they are just different.

"All Summer Long"

It was 1989, my thoughts were short my hair was long
Caught somewhere between a boy and man
She was seventeen and she was far from in-between
It was summertime in Northern Michigan
Ahh Ahh Ahh
Ahh Ahh Ahh

Splashing through the sand bar
Talking by the campfire
It's the simple things in life, like when and where
We didn't have no internet
But man I never will forget
The way the moonlight shined upon her hair

[Chorus:]
And we were trying different things
We were smoking funny things
Making love out by the lake to our favorite song
Sipping whiskey out the bottle, not thinking 'bout tomorrow
Singing Sweet home Alabama all summer long
Singing Sweet home Alabama all summer long

Catching Walleye from the dock
Watching the waves roll off the rocks
She'll forever hold a spot inside my soul
We'd blister in the sun
We couldn't wait for night to come
To hit that sand and play some rock and roll

While we were trying different things
And we were smoking funny things
Making love out by the lake to our favorite song
Sipping whiskey out the bottle, not thinking 'bout tomorrow
Singing Sweet Home Alabama all summer long
Singing Sweet Home Alabama all summer long

Now nothing seems as strange as when the leaves began to change
Or how we thought those days would never end
Sometimes I'll hear that song and I'll start to sing along
And think man I'd love to see that girl again

[Repeat Chorus x2]

Singing Sweet Home Alabama all summer long
Singing Sweet Home Alabama all summer long
Singing Sweet Home Alabama all summer long
Singing Sweet Home Alabama all summer long

Is anyone else have a computer go slow day today or is it just me?

It was on the news the other day that BT broadband (which I have) slow down your broadband connection at peak times to give people who pay more for their packages more speed. Disgusting. Ever since hearing that youtube has run slow for me, coincidence? Hmmmm maybe.

Anyways, computer isn't willing tonight so it's a quick in and out.

the company does that???
how unfair! Wonder if they all do, I know my plan slows down if I hit my DL limit, but it runs slower than people in the cities anyway so you barely notice, It really sucks when companies give preferential service to some parts of the population just because they are the ones they make more money off, when they advertise a certain expectation of service.

Hope it may just be a bit of coincidence this time for you, though I do notice sometimes from about 4pm to 7pm I run slower, I always thought it was just busy, maybe not!

So, last night a bill was passed in Alberta that gives parents the right to yank their children out of classes where the teacher discusses sex, human sexuality, or any religions. Teachers could face a human rights tribunal if a child is in a class where the subjects are discussed, and a parent finds this out and is upset. They can take it right to the Human Rights Commission of Alberta and have the teacher thrown out of the school.

Today, a study was released that states that Canadian children know very little about sex, how to have safe sex, or even how to prevent pregnancy or STD's from occurring.

The group that was tested ranged in the age from 13-17.

Now, I don't know about you guys, especially since I don't have kids yet, but doesn't that whole bill seem like you're shooting yourself in the foot? You don't want your kids to be exposed to information regarding their own bodies, or regarding the existence of more than one God, so you will go to court to have your child's teacher removed from the classroom so that no child will ever have to learn again?

Isn't that a human rights violation in itself?

*flails a bit*

Anonymous said...

so you will go to court to have your child's teacher removed from the classroom so that no child will ever have to learn again? Isn't that a human rights violation in itself?

Sounds like one to me.

I'm sure it won't be long before this new law is tested. Before one or two families feel their beliefs and their opinions and needs are more important than anyone else's.

They will sue the school, have the teacher removed and never think once about all the other children their actions will affect.

What about the other children in that school? What about that teacher and that teacher's family? Where are their protections?

How many other teachers will quit when that first teacher is forcefully removed from the classroom? Who will teach the children then?

Making quality and experienced educators too afraid to educate our children is a far greater human rights violation. That's a human rights tragedy.

Amyranth said...

Excellent points Anon.

Mister pointed something out as well that I hadn't thought of.

"Where do you draw the line?"

What happens when these kids get to University or College and find out that you do, indeed discuss human sexuality and religion, and you're expected to do it in a mature manner? Are there going to be hordes of angry parents outside of lecture halls, threatening to have entire Faculties wiped right out if they don't bend to the ideals that people should not have to learn?

God, if that's the case, why can't Math be a Human Rights violation? I should have thought of that years ago.

My parents sent me to school so that I could learn in an unbiased environment. Even Mister, who is dyed-in-the-wool Catholic, and does not believe in the Big Bang Theory agrees that it should still be taught in school alongside Creationism.

Which they do in the Catholic School System here.

It is a slippery slope my friends. If this happens in your neck of the woods, fight it! Fight it like... uh... like a vampire trying to drain your delicious freesia scented blood!!

(Sorry.)

Your mister did bring up a very good point. You did too.

Where do you draw the line? I'm sure if you go to any classroom in North America, the UK, Europe, Australia, anywhere... you will find at least one child in that classroom whose parents have a problem with something their child is being taught.

Evolution. Creationism. Sex. Science. Biology. Chemistry. History.

Saying the pledge of alliance. Singing the national anthem. The words in the school's songs.

There will be something someone doesn't like, doesn't agree with.

Walking home is all. It's not so much what I did but what was done by the cloud that followed me.

Original Punk L said...

I agree with Amy and the other anon about the teaching situation. First the parents should take the responsibility to talk to their children, and if what is presented in school is an different viewpoint, it just gives the kids an option to choose for themselves! Life is going to happen, even if the parents don't want it to.

Original Punk L said...

Well, anon, in that case you fling off the clothes you got and dry au natural. Unless the neighbors are up and the blinds are open.

9:49-10:21 said...

That's true L. The problem is way too many parents don't want to take any responsibility for the education of their own children. None.

They leave it all up to the teachers. That way, if something goes wrong in the child's life, they have someone other than themselves or their child to blame.

It's sad.

I hope that cloud didn't follow you into your home 10:26.

Dry off, warm up, put your feet up and relax.

You are in my head, TJ! Yikes! By the way, thank you for the lovely card you sent for my birthday. It was really sweet of you!

Yep, Wendy, I'm checking out different music. I know sooommmeee of what you would recommend :). I got the new Gallows CD and it is fantastic. I got the first one a couple of years ago and it was a straightforward, loud simplistic punk, but this one is really well done and complex. The first track (well, first two, since the first is like an intro) is so good.

Original Punk L said...

If you are leaving, good night Damp Anon. It was nice to talk to you.

Fire up those Tivos and DVRs, because the new Iron Maiden documentary Flight 666 is coming to your television beginning Saturday night, June 6th. The first airing on VH-1 Classic and Palladia (MTV's high def network) is at 9pm eastern. VH-1 will broadcast it at 12 midnight.

I also, really and truly, recommend RJA's "Lonely Road", Kings Of Leon's "Only By The Night" and Mastodon's "Crack The Skye" for starters!

Anon616 said...

Oh, and any HIM, Nightwish, Apocalyptica, The 69 Eyes, Children Of Bodom, Cradle of Filth, Negative, Poisonblack, Charon and Hanoi Rocks cds that you don't have!
:P

elena said...

Hi Everyone

Anon616 said...

L: Gallows = cool!

Hello Elena! How are you feeling?

Original Punk L said...

LOL TJ. Hope you like the song.

Wendy, how did I know you would have some music lined up? :) I like Iron Maiden, and even though RJA and KOL aren't my favs, I do like some of their songs. I haven't listened to Mastodon yet.

Something I thought about when I was going through the Warped Tour CDs is that there are three elements that make up a great song. First, the music itself. How well the musicians can play and how they fit together. You shouldn't have one insturment completely overshadowing the others unless it's at a point in the song where it needs to.

Second, the lyrics. I almost disregard any song that starts with "Baby...". The lyrics have to make you think.

Third, the singers voice, talent and attitude. If they sound like everyone else and like they are just calling it in, it doesn't work. The best singers are the ones you can always identify when you hear a new song. They have sing with raw power and emotion, no matter how loud or soft they sing.

Original Punk L said...

Hey, Elena! I left you a comment earlier. Are you doing better?

Wendy, I listened to Nightwish and Apocalyptica because of you and I like both of them. It's all your fault! :)

elena said...

I'm doing a bit better. My back still hurts but not as bad. I slept most of the evening (pain killers) then finally watched "Kung Fu Panda". I loved it.

toujours said...

wow, l., that's a song i want to hear some more! thanks for linking it. :)

have you heard of schoolyard heroes? they're a pacific northwest band, and the lead singer has this amazing almost operatic voice. she never stays still on stage, and her voice combined with the guitars and all of it...shivers down the spine, in the best way, i assure you.

hi elena! how are you feeling tonight?

Original Punk L said...

I'm glad you're feeling better, Elena. You probably needed the sleep badly.

Kung Fu Panda looks like a cute movie. There are tons of movies that I have yet to see. One year about 15 years ago I went on a movie kick and watched every classic I could get my hands on.

Original Punk L said...

The rest of the album is great too, TJ. Don't you love the build up to the main part of the song?

Thanks for the recommendation for Schoolyard Heroes. I'll check them out.

Pink's new album, along with Rise Against's new one, is great too. There's a group called Cracker that I love and they just released a new CD. It's next on the list.

Anon616 said...

And, I highly recommend some Atreyu!

~You can listen to them here doing some Bon Jovi and giving Love a Bad Name!~

and I highly, highly, highly recommend some Disturbed!

~Indestructable LIVE on Kimmel!~

:D

Okay, I think that is it, for now!

Sorry I took so long to respond. I was stuck!
:/

toujours said...

i did, l. -- that intro gave the beginning of the music a huge impact!

i've been liking what i've been hearing of pink's new stuff, too. i watch the music video channels in the morning instead of the radio, so the stuff i'm hearing these days is probably pretty mainstream lol

but i like shinedown a lot, and carolina liar, and my latest new cd was "dark horse" by nickelback. some of the lyrics on there are pretty much just the standard sex, drugs & rock 'n' roll, but the music always gets me hyped up.

Original Punk L said...

I'm going to bed, but it was great to talk to you guys tonight! I'm going to my parents tomorrow to visit but I'll be back Mon, so I'll be back on soon. I think J. is coming on tommorow night.

Elena, I hope you get better.
Wendy, You too! I'll check out the other bands.
TJ, thanks again for the card and music recommend.

Damp Anon, various nice anons, Ergo, Miss T., Amy, Miranth, Lewis, and anyone else who drops by, sweet dreams and goodnight.

SS,
Do you have any music recommendations for me? Something that fits the bill of the type of songs I mentioned? I hope you are doing well. I miss hearing your happy voice around here more. Take care of yourself and sweet dreams.

Anon616 said...

L: I'm liking your 3 elements of a great song!

Those are some of the very reasons I love the music of bands like KOL, HIM, Apo, Nightwish, Disturbed, Mastodon etc...

Pssst.... I think I recently managed to get another friend addicted to RJA! Well, at least the song "Pen And Paper"!

I'm very happy about that!

Elena: I'm happy to hear you're feeling a little better! I want to see Kung Fu Panda! I wanted to go see Drag Me To Hell; but, Bre wasn't very impressed with it. I think I'll just wait until it's out on DVD!

ooh, i didn't even realize that movie was a sam raimi until i saw a clip from the red carpet somewhere, and they were interviewing him. i may even have pointed at the tv, mouth agape. lol

i probably won't see the movie, but i have a soft spot for the raimi brothers. i met ted once *coughataconcough* and he was super nice, a really fun person. :)

Anon616 said...

Elena: I love Sam Raime too!!!! Bre said the movie would have been good but there was a lot of unecessary disgusting stuff. Something about vomiting maggots (they didn't DO the vomiting, they were vomited)!

mayo,

i always get to the shop really early, about an hour and a half before i need to clock in. it's not by choice, that's just when i'm able to catch a ride in, but i don't mind. i've got a key to the place, and that time spent by myself in the dark and quiet building is something i've really come to look forward to.

usually i just listen to my mp3 player and write in my journal, but today i started up a new story. it isn't anything much, just a throwaway i'm writing for my own amusement, like i did while in seattle last winter.

it's becoming a habit, these little stories i tell myself on paper! writing them longhand is part of their charm for me, it's so intimate, so private. today i didn't have a notebook ready, so i just cobbled up a little pamphlet with staples and copy paper, and started scribbling.

i know nothing creative is wasted, these little stories are warm-ups if nothing else, and who knows? there might be little gems that i'll lift later on, but what makes them truly enjoyable is that i don't consider them much of anything. it gives me the freedom to just write, just spool the tale off my head and onto the paper. i don't try to be pretty, i ignore the rules of grammar and punctuation, and just scrawl and scrawl and scrawl.

it feels so good.

good night, mayo. i hope you're able to unleash your creativity on occasion, too. it's good to let it dig in the flower beds and rummage through the trash cans every once in awhile. after all, you don't want it to become too house-bound.

Clouds Gathering

It seemed the kind of life we wanted.
Wild strawberries and cream in the morning.
Sunlight in every room.
The two of us walking by the sea naked.

Some evenings, however, we found ourselves
Unsure of what comes next.
Like tragic actors in a theater on fire,
With birds circling over our heads,
The dark pines strangely still,
Each rock we stepped on bloodied by the sunset.

We were back on our terrace sipping wine.
Why always this hint of an unhappy ending?
Clouds of almost human appearance
Gathering on the horizon, but the rest lovely
With the air so mild and the sea untroubled.

The night suddenly upon us, a starless night.
You lighting a candle, carrying it naked
Into our bedroom and blowing it out quickly.
The dark pines and grasses strangely still.

Mayo

I’m still sitting on the floor as I write this and still trying very hard to put the thoughts in my head down on paper (or in type, if you will)

Suffice it to say, it’s hard to do this tonight. Maybe the jumbled mess in my brain is because of the painkillers I’ve downed. I really hope that is the reason because when it becomes hard for me to release the words they begin to build up. The words are really my emotions and I know what happens if they don’t find release. Yeah, I really do know.

So it’s funny but something I heard earlier this evening keeps running through my brain. Strangely it’s from the movie Kung Fu Panda. I suppose it might seem strange that several lines from what is basically a kids movie have touched me deeply. But then again maybe that’s not so strange. It is possible to find inspiration in the most unexpected places. So here it is….

"Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present."

Wise words, there is a certain beauty to them. They speak of letting go, not being afraid and living for today. Not just living for today but cherishing today.

I want to remember those words, I want to believe in them. We all need something to believe in.

Night Mayo

Hiya everyone, hiya L if you're still here.

It was great to see Shaunette and party sheep having a good time last night.

Amy, that story you told the other night, I would say that I couldn't believe it but that sad thing is that I can. It happens here all the time. When I started working at court back in 99 one of the more mature ushers said to me "just you watch, this human rights law will be the worst thing to happen to this country" and he was right. The human rights law needs to be replaced with the common sense law.

Ergo, yes it's awful that internet providers nick your broadband to give to people on higher tarrifs.

My computer is still being an arse today so I'm giving up till after the weekend.

That would require self serving, self absorbed and self righteous human beings to regain their common sense.

Not going happen unless some scientists discover rogaine for the brain. Guaranteed to regrow the common sense brain cells you were born with.
