When was the last time...

Recess.

Blaze a trail of peel-outs and back seat fucks
Into permanence, slammed beyond the thick
much too fast. Recall the whistle's urgent
cry to return from the field too soon and
pulling warm hands back, while whispering in the ears of those
confident to hold their tongues. Now it is late night
debates and those whispers are ignored.
Spinning out, into the ditch,
wheels in motion without regard for direction
full speed ahead arriving at a permanent reprieve
from the creaking knees
and loose bowels of reproach.
It comes without warning, incredible is its speed,
and it will tempt even the most
guileless to race. The truck arrives hooked to pull
the twisted spokes and reveals the fuel stain
seeped into the cracks and crevices.
Smothering the gravitational pull of the earth’s core
and even then you will float, pulled by a chain.

p.s. you felt like that?

Fimble Star, although your question was not addressed to me, please allow me to share my thoughts on the subject.

Never underestimate the lasting impact your words can have on another human being. Words are incredibly powerful - they have the power to influence, encourage, transform, inspire, guide, create, destroy, hurt, heal, forgive and redeem.

When unkind, cruel words are used as weapons they can be so hurtful they inflict deep wounds that may never heal or result in a scar that stays with someone for the rest of their life.

Bullying can destroy lives.

Verbal, psychological attacks are equally as abhorrent and unacceptable as physical attacks. It is an ugly, cowardly individual that will abuse the power of words, taking pleasure in hurting, belittling, destroying the spirit and shattering the self confidence of another human being.

But it is a beautiful individual with true strength of character who will use the power of words to bring happiness and provide comfort to others. Thoughtful, kind and sincere words can be used to express love, impart wisdom, resolve differences, give encouragement, share experiences and lift the spirits of friends and loved ones during times of adversity. Be strong for each other....encourage one another and achieve strength through unity.

Be deaf to those that try and hurt you with vile and vicious words.

Anonymous said...

Gosh, I really don't know if that's good or bad.

Mayonaise, isn't it? I also believe that those who lash out against others do so in order to fulfill some sort of void they have within themselves. Maybe they gain power by trying to humiliate others using words; a form of verbal abuse.

That's an awesome story, and I know it's to demonstrate the power of words and all, but man, it also demonstrates that you should never accept something just because everyone else in the world tells you to.

Sometimes I feel like I'm jumping around like that, too.

Amyranth said...

Kapu, let me ask you this.

Do you feel that so-called Pretty People are less insensitive?

Less insensitive? Like, more sensitive?

Well, let me preface this by saying that I have issues, and I have a tendency to blame my failings on how I look. That makes it easier, right, because then there's nothing I can do about it.

I also have the tendency--wrong, I know--to chalk up others' success to their good looks. "If I were beautiful, I could do that, too." ALSO WRONG, I know this as well. Although there is some truth to it, at least in that statistically Beautiful People get better jobs, get careers in acting etc., it's not across the board, and to chalk others' success up to their looks is just as lame as those same attractive people relying on said looks.

I get this, I honestly do. But like I said, I have issues.

Then I remind myself: I would make a terrible Beautiful Person, because although not all Beautiful People are vain and lazy, I know I would be. I would make a horrible Beautiful Person because I would be the one who just glides by on her looks; essentially I am the laziest cow. So it's a gift, one that's made me want to be interesting, and learn to do and to be things that other people never bother to do, or to be. Like clever, a Hula dancer, a martial artist, a decent writer.

I wasn't put on this planet to decorate it, so when people come out with the "You're so ugly" junk, I should be like, "Yeah, but at least I can string words together." ^_^

Anonymous said...

Mayonaise, we know that you are very pretty, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder my dear. Beauty means nothing if the person doesn't have personality and substance, heart, and passion.

You have an extra limb? I KNEW IT. ^_~

Has it really not made a difference, Mayo? Have you ever been not pretty? If not, how could you know?

toujours said...

back to the serious:

I find it difficult to believe that any amount of contentment is gained by those who are hateful.

anger and hatred like that just feeds on itself, in an endless cycle. people who live with that sort of miasma really can't understand that they are creating it.

they can't feel contentment, because they have left no room for it.

i suppose i feel sympathy for them, too, when i think about it. but they do it to themselves, so sympathy is about as far as you can go.

it's only when they show they have a glimmer of positivity that you can hook onto that and pull them back.

Anonymous said...

Mayo, have you ever watched the movie Howl's Moving Castle? If not, you should watch it. Well, I tell that to everyone, but I mean, hmm. It's hard to explain, you know?

Amyranth said...

Interesting answer.

I've noticed, having been picked on myself for wearing glasses and being short, that most of the so-called Beautiful People are the ones with the greatest amount of ugliness inside. It's like they take every insecurity they've ever had about themselves, and pin it exactly on you.

"God, you're SO short, you'll never be a model."

"You know, you're almost anorexic, would it kill you to eat?"

"Curly Hair? Looks more like a Rat's Nest!"

I suppose the thing to do is to listen to what they're saying, and realize they're only talking about what makes them feel shitty about themselves.

I have no problem with myself. Sure, I could stop picking at my fingers, but we all have quirks.

I feel that as a person, while I might not adore myself, I can deal with myself. I've spent 25 years in this body and with any luck it'll be another 100 yet.

BC: I missed the 'hot stuff' the first time around! Thank you sweet cakes!!!

I always TRY my best to understand WHY people choose to use words as weapons. Why they feel the need to ridicule and belittle others. Is it an attempt to make themselves feel/look better? I wonder what demons they are battling, what's eating them up/tearing them apart -- from the inside out....

Sometimes, I come to the conclusion that some people are just CRUEL. There's really no way to understand that, is there?

I do feel sorry them though. What a miserable life they must have being filled with such hatred and bitterness.

Amyranth, I try not to paint all Beautiful People with one broad paintbrush. There are gorgeous people who are beautiful in every way. because of whatever is inside them, they have not taken the easy way out. I find that very admirable. But it's hard for me to reconcile the two sometimes. ^_^

toujours said...

thinking aboout the beauty topic, i have to say that in my mind, there's always been a difference between being good-looking, and being beautiful.

the first is purely physical, but the second is dependent wholly on one's appearance because it's more about spirit and personality in tandem with attractiveness.

when i think of beauty, i think of something almost sacred, really.

and i never think that the "beautiful people" are usually all that beautiful, because they seem so...

lacking.

Even still, there is a gulf between simply normal looking people and those with really obvious physical flaws, you know?

Although there's this guy I know and he's always been a really good friend to me. He says--and I believe him--that he finds flaws on a woman interesting rather than off-putting. With most people I would say "yeah, sure you do," but this guy means it. It's just weird.

For me there is "classic beauty" like Catherine Deneurve (damn bad spelling) and Natalie Wood etc but I often find model good looks very sterile, especially in guys, I like a face with some character, and a lovely smile, I think a warm smile is always a good indicator of the persons inside. But real beauty is always a combination and looks can come in second

Gosh, Mayo, thank you for answering my question, and for asking us one, and then for answering more questions from us. I nearly forgot to say that.

ah emily well we've had tonnes of rain and I've stressed over tax, school just went back and that's about it.
I have new chicks hatched.
Gosh don't I live a thrilling life!

Do you have another job in mind?

I have been wondering how you are, especially when TJ said things could happen to peopl and we'd never know, I really like talking to you

toujours said...

Even still, there is a gulf between simply normal looking people and those with really obvious physical flaws, you know?

well, if by "obvious physical flaws" you're talking about someone missing a leg, etc. then yes, there's a difference, but it's still just superficial.

but if you mean someone has an eye that's a little higher on their head, or a large nose, then i don't see those as flaws at all.

there is so much beauty in the world, and we narrow our perceptions to it all the time by allowing ourselves to accept a narrow definition.

...and now i am going to very carefully step away from that soapbox, because this topic is one that tempts me to step up on it, always.

;)

six, how can we hope to stop the typo fairy? she is alll-powrul.

and good bye to pickled possum! can't wait to see what'll you say when you return!

I guess you're too right, MJ.

And Mayo? Man, I just can't quit tonight. Mayo, I think you're a very fine poet. I used to think I was better than you, but now I wonder. O_O

Anonymous said...

No, you're absolutely right, TJ. But by not seeing the flaws that seem minor to you, you're also in the minority. Which is a shame.

Goodnight Carrie and Amy.

physical beauty is very subjective, physical flaws may be a big thing to one person but not another, but inner beauty moves so far beyond that

it is in the treatment of others you see a persons best and worst

Hello Emily and welcome back!

Possum: I recall reading a story similiar to SS's; but the one I read didn't have such a happy ending. There were four frogs stuck in a barrell 1/2 filled with water. Three of the frogs gave up and drowned. Just one froggie made it out of that one alive. And he lived only because of self determination....

I think I like SS's frog story better!

Ergo, I've been looking for work in another state. I think its time to move away. The hustle and bustle of nonsense every single day is driving me mad.

My boss is just abusive to me. I feel like my work is never appreciated and when she needs favors she always expects me to hop to it. She's a fucking a bitch (excuse my french) and I just got to get my shit together to make the transition.

Amyranth said...

Hey P, maybe I'll record it sometime, and embarass the living hell out of myself.

Kapu, I think some of them become blinded by beauty. S.N.O.B.B if you will. (Snooty Nitwit Overcome By Beauty.) They go from being well received to exceptional, and are suddenly surrounded by other exceptional people. Once you're classified like that, it's hard to be seen any other way. The normal people don't like you anymore because you're better than them by osmosis.

I never get to use that word enough. Osmosis.

Mayonaise, thanks for staying around for a bit. Have an extra chocolate tonight for our Anniversary, okay? I know I will!

Also, to my fellow UA freaks.

that makes me kinda sad, kapunua. there's so much juiciness in the world, you know?

it's so easy to close down to it -- it happens to me all the time, whenever a storm takes over -- but i you just open up a little, it's a really beautiful place, this world.

i think we're conditioned to think material = bad, spiritual = good, but they're really two sides of the same coin.

there's a quote which expresses this idea of the partnership required, it's a quote about art, but i think it can be applied to everything:

"where the spirit does not work with the hand there is no art."
- da vinci

omg. how did i get on the soapbox??

Here is a song that goes with the topic.

When I saw you at the grocery store
you were sharing a shopping cart with her
and I couldn't turn and run away
I didn't know what to say
you introduced us for the first time
and I had to look her in the eye
but you could not imagine my surprise

can't you see you're leaving me for an ugly girl
does she talk about politics and all the stuff that used to make me sick
does she smoke cigars and stay up late oh she's so great
does she tell you what you want to hear
and I bet that she can grow a beard
I'd feel better thinking you were queer
it's not fair I can't compare to an ugly girl

ha ha ha the jokes on me
I feel jealous and I feel mean
is she so nice that it makes up for her face there's no way
do you have to keep your eyes closed
do you have to keep the lights down low
oh I bet you wish you had a blindfold can't you see
you're leaving me for an ugly girl

I agree, TJ. I'm in love with this place. No, not BlogBelieve, I mean the world. I'm disappointed in much of what is going on ("May you live in interesting times" is another double edged sword,) but for the most part I couldn't be more exultant to just be. You know?

Amyranth, I agree. But you notice how it's only some and not others who get sucked into that SNOBB trap?

Rose/Emily: Get yourself out of that situation. That kind of stress isn't worth any amount of money. Best of luck to you.

Good night Amy and anyone else who left to seek the sandman. Sweet dreams!

BC: I was trying to answer your "Where are you?" question on the last post; but blogger kept eating my comments!

I'm home BC. As for where I've been, well -- that's a secret.
LOL!!!

Just kidding *wink* I did some parading (again) today!

I really should go finish the details on my Mardi Gras costume. It's not easy for someone who doesn't know how to sew! I hope the darn thing doesn't fall off on Tuesday!!

*note to self: bring lots of safety pins*

Good night to all... BC, Ergo, TJ, .....
everyone.

Have fun ladies and Mayo, SS and Bikey (where has he been, btw)!

Love & Hugs to all!

Gosh, Toujours, thank you so much. I've never considered myself much of a photographer, but I do take photographs neurotically, to hold onto those breathless moments. That damn camera is always in my purse I don't leave the house without it.

Amyranth, well, just... *spank*

I'm going to bed, too, so goodnight, BlogBelieve.

Goodnight, Lurky McLurker, and just, thank you. Very much.I absolutely will remember your words if and when that junk starts to happen again, and that alone will make me smile. Long days and pleasant nights to you. *Tips hat*

Mayo, thank you, too, for the question, the answers, and the poem. You know I love that kind of stuff. I hope you will have a restful night, Mayo. I hope that your whispers aren't getting ignored.

Sdock's going to get a lot out of this post and will have a lot to give back to you, count on it. ^_^

To everyone else who listened to me prattle tonight: Thank you for all of your insight and perspective. You guys make it worth the wait. :D

Well, I live New York but I'm contemplating moving to (don't laugh) New Jersey. I have lots of family spread all over Jersey and honestly they all lead much more calmer lives then the life I lead hear in the city.

Also, I'm practically in Jersey every month or so to visit my sister so I might as well just move.

Thanks TJ! I'll TRY my best not to injure myself with the thing. I do seem to recall glue guns being dangerous in my hands.
