I'll have to look that up and see if I can get a copy. I've mostly been re-reading Pratchett lately, and I'm thinking I need to expand my horizons into something else.

hi bc. :)

yep, amyranth, i think she just published the latest in the series, it's got to be the seventh or so. but they are so well-written, so solidly researched.

and she's the cutest author i've ever seen!

So, I'm seeing all this Princess and The Frog stuff everywhere now, and I'm actually pretty excited. I'm going to have to find a way to cram my niece into that dress next year for Hallowe'en!

ergoproxy said...

what are the titles of the books TJ? Or the series, they sound like my type of story

toujours said...

the first one is outlander, ergo, and the next two are dragonfly in amber and voyager. there are about four or five more beyond that (plus a spin-off series with one of the minor characters that i ahven't read yet). they take place mostly in the 1700's and also in 1940/1960.

they are fantastic, i highly recommend them! i have the first five or so, but they're in storage in seattle.

mayo,

i was at loose ends earlier this evening. the story i've been writing for nanowrimo wound down to a rusty halt and now i have to figure out what to write next. i didn't really think it had enough in it to carry me through the whole month, but still...

good thing i'm not trying to make the quota, huh?

i don't want to give up though. i want to figure out the discipline part of writing; i'll just be someone who talks about writing otherwise.

i have my fingers crossed.

(on a side note, tonight i've been listening to my mp3 player on shuffle, and just as i began to type this good night, "sleep" came on. this is the song that always played just as i was getting ready to say good night back in seattle, back when i listened to tbp every night. i was always amused by the repeated coincidence. but this, tonight? that's pretty random!)

good night, mayo, and sweet dreams.

* 1/2 cup unsalted butter

* 1/2 cup packed brown sugar

2. Meanwhile, place the bottom crust in your pan. Fill with apples, mounded slightly. Cover with a lattice work of crust. Gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the crust. Pour slowly so that it does not run off.
3. Bake 15 minutes at 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes.

Well it turns out mom was in my kitchen making a pot roast. I have no idea why but it was damn good. I mean it’s not like I don’t see mom every day and she wanted to come over and share a meal or anything like that. I’m still sorta trying to figure it out. But why? I should just be happy she did it and let it go, shouldn’t I? Yep, probably.

Other than that the day was filled with lots of strange customers at the store. Not strange in a bad way, just different. Many bought strange collections of books. I mean usually a customer will buy several books from the same genre. Today not so much. One woman bought a huge cookbook and The South Beach Diet book. I really wanted to crack a joke but thought better of it. Maybe the cookbook was a gift for someone else. Hell I don’t know maybe she was gonna make some of the dishes then go on a diet. Whatever I’m just glad she bought them.

Sometimes I just think too much about unimportant things. That is the truth.

Well hope you had a fun filled day and if you didn’t well there is always tomorrow.

Night Mayo

Elena

PS – Just cause it was suggested…

STONE SOUP
Heat some water in a pot. Add some stones you've scrubbed a lot. Sprinkle pepper, salt and herbs. Let it boil undisturbed. Drop in carrots, onions, too. Let the soup heat through and through. Stir in milk to make it sweet. Add potatoes for a treat. Toss in meat cubes. Let it stew. Let it bubble, let it brew. Taste the soup and when it's done, Share Stone Soup with EVERYONE!

Elena, that didn't sound appealing so here's my recommendation

Ultimate Pumpkin Pie

Ingredients
For the crust:

* 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
* 5 teaspoons sugar
* Salt
* 12 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

For the filling and topping:

* 1 15-ounce can pure pumpkin
* 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
* Salt
* 3 large eggs, plus 1 egg white
* 1/2 cup sugar
* 1 cup heavy cream
* 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
* 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
* 1/2 cup pecans
* 1 cup fresh cranberries, or frozen, thawed and drained
* 1 2.3-ounce package amaretti cookies (about 12)

Directions

Make the crust: Combine the flour, sugar and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Mix in the cold butter with a pastry blender or your hands until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Work in 3 tablespoons ice water until the dough holds together without being too sticky. If it's still crumbly, add more ice water, 1 teaspoon at a time. Form into a ball, wrap in plastic and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

On a floured surface, roll out the dough into an 11- to 12-inch circle with a floured rolling pin. Ease into a 9-inch pie pan; press firmly into the bottom and sides. Trim the excess dough, then pinch the edges. Refrigerate until ready to fill.

Place a baking sheet on the bottom oven rack and preheat to 375. Make the filling: Whisk the pumpkin in a bowl with the butter and a pinch of salt. Whisk in 3 eggs and the sugar.

Stir in the cream, cinnamon and nutmeg. Pour the mixture into the pie shell. Lightly beat the egg white, then brush onto the pastry edges. Carefully place the pie on the preheated baking sheet, lower the oven temperature to 325 and bake until the pie is set but still jiggles slightly, about 50 minutes. Let cool completely.

Meanwhile, make the topping: Toast the pecans on a baking sheet in the oven for about 10 minutes; cool. With a knife or food processor, coarsely chop the pecans, cranberries and cookies; sprinkle over the cooled pie.

One more thing before I go. I have a wicked headache and would love to stay but...

I just wanted to say to everyone who commented on Flighty's opera video - I passed on your words and she wanted me to thank you all.

And J and L my package arrived and thank you both so much. I can't wait to read my comics. I love Hellboy but didn't have the FCBD issue. Also Swords of Texas looks good but then I've always been a fan of Texas LOL. You guys are so good to me.

Take care everyone.

Mr. May'Naise,

I didn't know we were having cooking class today. I'm totally unprepared to bake a pie.

I could come back after school hours. I see you have a nice chunk of meat in storage. I would love to tenderize, season and shove that in my oven for you. My oven heats at all the right temperatures.

That meat will be so soft and juicy when I'm done.

That's no excuse. We still have to follow the rules

Banana Cream Pie

Ingredients:

* 1 cup whole milk
* 4 egg yolks
* 1 cup granulated sugar
* 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
* 3 tablespoons butter, cut in small pieces
* 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
* 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 2 cups heavy cream divided
* 2 bananas, thinly sliced and tossed with 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice (about 1/2 lemon)
* 1 baked 9-inch pie shell

Preparation:
In a heavy saucepan, bring milk to the boiling point.
Place egg yolks in mixing bowl and beat on medium speed of electric mixer, gradually adding sugar. Beat for 2 minutes, until mixture is thick and lemon-colored. Beat in flour. With mixer on low speed, gradually add the hot milk.

Transfer mixture to heavy saucepan and heat over medium heat, stirring constantly. Let mixture come to a boil and boil for about 1 minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and continue to beat until mixture is smooth. Beat in butter a little at a time; then blend in cinnamon. Stir in vanilla extract; let mixture cool.

Beat 1 cup of the cream until firm but not stiff. Mix about 1/2 cup of the whipped cream into the egg mixture to lighten it. Fold remaining whipped cream into egg mixture then fold in sliced bananas.

Transfer filling to the pastry shell. Whip remaining cream and spoon or pipe onto the pie. Refrigerate until serving time.

An attorney arrived home late, after a very tough day trying to get a stay of execution for a client who was due to be hanged for murder at midnight. His last minute plea for clemency to the governor had failed and he was feeling worn out and depressed.

As soon as he walked through the door at home, his wife started on him about, 'What time of night to be getting home is this? Where have you been?' 'Dinner is cold and I'm not reheating it'. And on and on and on. Too shattered to play his usual role in this familiar ritual, he went and poured himself a shot of whiskey and headed off for a long hot soak in the bathtub, pursued by the predictable sarcastic remarks as he dragged himself up the stairs.

While he was in the bath, the phone rang. The wife answered and was told that her husband's client, James Wright, had been granted a stay of execution after all. Wright would not be hanged tonight. Finally realising what a terrible day he must have had, she decided to go upstairs and give him the good news.

As she opened the bathroom door, she was greeted by the sight of her husband, bent over naked, drying his legs and feet.

"They're not hanging Wright tonight," she said.

To which he whirled around and screamed, "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WOMAN, DON'T YOU EVER STOP?"
much love EP xx

SS
Barbara Walters of Television's 20/20 did a story on gender roles in Kabul, Afganistan, several years before the Afgan conflict. She noted that women customarily walked 5 paces behind their husbands. She recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still walk behind their husbands. From Ms Walter's vantage point, despite the overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime, the women now seem to walk even further back behind their husbands and are happy to maintain the old custom.

Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked, "Why do you now seem happy with the old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?

The woman looked Ms. Walters straight in the eyes, and without hesitation, said, "Land mines."
lotsa love EP xx

Nothing like waking up to hot oatmeal on a chilly Sunday morning.

Overnight Crock Pot Oatmeal

1 cup steel cut oats
4 cups water
(if using a slow cooker liner decrease the water to 3 1/2 cups)
1/2 cup half and half or milk
1 cup dried fruit of choice
(apples, raisins, cranberries, apricots etc)
or 1 - fresh apple (chopped)
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 - tbsp butter
1/2 - tsp vanilla extract
2-3 Tablespoons cinnamon sugar

First off find a bowl that will hold four cups of liquid, and fit inside your crock pot with the lid on. Measure out one cup of Steele cut oats. Pour that into the inner bowl. Add the four cups of water, milk or half and half, brown sugar, vanilla, butter and cinnamon sugar. If you would like to add dried fruit or a cut up apple the add it as well. Fill the crock with water to about halfway. Set the inner bowl in the crock and see how high the water rises. Add more water in the crock if necessary. Try to match it so that the water reaches about the same height on the outside of the oats bowl or just below the bowl. Place the lid on your crock pot. Set on low and go to bed. When you get up the next morning your oatmeal should be cooked perfectly in that steamy water bath.

man oh man. i just got off the phone with the fraud department of my bank card...someone stole my number! i've never had that happen before.

they were buying tickets to shows and hundreds of dollars' worth of stuff at lord & taylors. all in this last week!

holy crap.

but it's all taken care of now, card cancelled, bad charges flagged.

seriously, keep a close eye on your bank accounts, people.

Amyranth said...

Shit Teej, I'm glad you got warned!

We had to deal with a fraudulent credit card at the jewelery store I worked at. The guy had actually stolen the number, and had it reprinted on a blank card that used the name he had printed on a forged license. These bastards are getting smarter and smarter all the time, unfortunately. And you have no idea how scary it is when you're in the middle of a $2000 diamond sale, and someone pulls you aside to tell you the ring that's currently being sold to a customer by a co-worker is going through on a stolen account and could you please talk to the VISA guy who is just as panicked as you are?

Yeah.

And we didn't catch the guys either. Mall Security followed them out to the parking lot where they jumped into a rental van and took off. The plates are untracable on rentals for some STUPID reason, and the store got shafted $2000.

If that doesn't sound like the OPs I don't know what does.

Keep being yourselves beautiful Lovelies and disregard the ones who think that "others" are better than you.

There's a reason why you all stayed and they left. And why Mayo and SS are still posting.

Amyranth I think you have that recipe down. ^_____^ You are one of the few. You are truly polite and kind to everyone (who deserves it) and you are brave in speaking your mind even if others don't agree with you. You call people on their bullshit and so what if you use some harsh words. They are deserved.

Your life speaks for who and what you are and you are one of the true LOVELIES.

At 26 Amyranth is a beautiful woman who wants to settle down and make a commitment and be someone's wife. She has a job and doesn't need to talk herself up or be nasty to people for no reason. You don't see her talking about how great she is, trying to get Mayo's attention, complaining all the time about not getting attention, complaining over the little things, acting like a victim or running around town with a man half her age.

Sorry but that is true maturity.

Deal with it.

And she's not a whiner. You don't always hear about how oh so hard her life is.

There are people here with real problems, who have lost people in their lives. Lost loves. Lost children. Yes you read that right, lost children or soon-to-be children. Sometimes maybe they feel a normal sense of sadness but do they dwell on it? No they get over it with humor love and laughter and they move on. They let go.

Instead of complaining and playing the victim.

hey I got tho the library today ad found a book by Diana Gabaldon, called Lord John and the Hand of Devils. I saw the series you mentioned but the first 2 were on loan so I have to wait

oh cool! that is one of the spin-off books i told you about. lord john was too interesting a character for the small role he had in the main series. :)

i've heard they're very good, but haven't had a chance to read them yet myself. the libraries in this area are very haphazard in their collections, unfortunately.

ergoproxy said...

they are the same here, there are 6 (I think) libraries in the district, one main one and the collections get changed, plus a few mobile libraries, you can get inter-library loans, plus state library if you want, it still takes a while though

I'll let you know what it's like

hows your day been?

Mister won't even start a book series if all the books have not been released. He hates it when he burns through, say, the first three books in a series, then has to wait for the others to be released.

toujours said...

it's been lazy, mostly. but i was able to catch part of a motogp race, haven't seen one of those for a while. :)

hey amyranth, you think that's bad, try reading the clan of the cave bear series. i just heard that jean auel is still working on the next book in the series, and it's been over ten years!

ergoproxy said...

hi Amy! I get like that, I've been caught with reading part way through a series then finding out the next one isn't due for 2 more years.
I like finding them all in one massive volume, that way you know you get all of them, in order, nothing worse than reading book 1 and 2, then finding the library for some inexplicable reason only has books 4 and 6

toujours said...

...or they have the whole series but only bought the last volume as an audio cd.

Actual books can't run out of power in the middle of a page, they don't stop half way as your connection was lost while downloading them, you can find one stuck in a box in a thrift store that is covered in dust and have it become your favourite....

I could go on, but I know you all feel the same and could fill in many others

Also, I read in an article that they used to drink each other's piss on stage. Do you think Lindsey drank Jimmy's urine? I don't know how you can kiss a person that drinks his own or other people's piss? Chantal must have a thing for that.

I got one on the Loch Ness Monster maybe about yr6, I must have read so many times, and that is one I still have here!

Hi,

I would go for the ereader. Yes, everything you said about books are nice but for me I would have to go with something that fits the way I read. I read on the bus or anytime I am on the go for long periods of time. I also don't have the space for a ton of books. Plus an ereader is greener I wouldn't have to kill a tree anymore to get my read on.

i've actually read books about libraries, there are some truly gorgeous ones out there.

my favorite so far was the trinity library in dublin (where the book of kells is housed), and also the one in cambridge where you can see the original hand written manuscript for winnie-the-pooh. they felt like places where books are loved. :)

ergoproxy said...

hi MJ, that's where their use is I think, they can store so much in a small portable space

it's just so much will probably not be put on the sites to download, out of print stuff, older, less popular books
they need a massive library like the one in Dr Who, with everything

Amyranth said...

Hi TJ.

gathering old books and ones that were out of print to put on the net not everyone was happy about this.

Why not MJ? Books are meant to be read. The sad fact is that most young people these days do most if not all of their reading on the net.

Do they even publish encyclopedias anymore?

Martha Smith-Jones said...

Well Google is doing it on a bigger scale.

You know those codes you have to enter (sometimes) when you are signing up for a new site. That is to help out google with words in old books where words are to faded to read.

Hi mj, ergo, tj. Hi book anon. Favorite book....right now I'm pretty big on Charlaine Harris so my favorite is Dead Until Dark.

Martha Smith-Jones said...

1:06 I listen to a podcast called a way with words. You can write in and call in asking question. Someone asked what kind of dictnary they should get there kids. It was decided unless your child is reading a big with words they won't understand just use the online one.

People don't like the idea of google getting the rights to all those books.

Anonymous said...

So Google is trying to restore literary works and preserve the written word. I don't see how that's a bad thing.

Where would we be if past literary lovers had not done the same.

ergoproxy said...

world history is changing so rapidly I can see why publishing encyclopedia would be very difficult these days.
Still I have so many memories of looking through these old encyclopedia as a kid we had, they were red, one set was smaller than the other, they smelt like the old museum
Just having worked in a school and knowing the dramas you have with technology, if the school can actually afford to have it, actual encyclopedia are still useful

ergoproxy said...

is the google problem to do with only google having the future distribution rights? I can see that making people uncomfortable

oh stuff online dictionaries! it is so much quicker to grab one, look it up and put it down again.
It's a skill which kids need to learn and is sadly lacking these days.
Plus unless every single person has 24 hr 7 day fast reliable cheap internet access, all this reliance on technology will just leave a lot of people behind.

Anonymous said...

Hi Ergo.

Charlaine Harris so my favorite is Dead Until Dark.

That sounds like a fairly frightening read.

It was decided unless your child is reading a big with words they won't understand just use the online one.

I think that's horrible advice. Every child should have a dictionary and know how to use it.

Goodnight. :)

Martha Smith-Jones said...

1:15 not everyone sees it that way. I think if it was just some guy in his basement doing it they wouldn't care. Google is a big company and I guess they fear Google getting yet another part of the world domination pie.

toujours said...

oooh, a private diary, ergo? she's going to love it!

i remember having an illustrated children's dictionary, it was awesome. i loved looking through it at the pictures for each word and making up stories about them.

anyway, i can't believe some people have a problem with what google is doing. i suppose they don't like the library of congress, either?

toujours said...

good night, anon. :)

Martha Smith-Jones said...

1:20 the kid was leaving home for school and that big book would have been just in the way for him. They (the podcasters) did tell the man what kind of paper dictionary to get his son if he still felt the need. They just felt that paying to have a subscription to an online dictionary would be better as it is updated soon.

I did just get up and get the one with the mushroom risotto I'm making for dinner in it, to check what I need

Anonymous said...

Do you use wine in your risotto ergo?

ergoproxy said...

I see their reasoning MJ, but to me the vast majority of words already exist, and the likelihood of him coming across obscure words, requiring a huge paper dictionary would be pretty slim, I just like to have a dictionary handy, though I do use the online ones if I'm online. If it's a time the computer is off it would be a hassle to have to turn it all on just to look up a word, then turn it off.

ergoproxy said...

I sure do anon, it will be a chardonnay, as that's what I have handiest
it has dried shitake mushrooms as well as fresh portobello mushrooms in it, makes it taste richer

I think wine is a must in a risotto. Never tried it with shitake, always tried to use the porchini mushrooms. Do you put saffron threads in yours?
