guts

It is interesting when you get a fresh perspective of yourself from a new acquaintance. Even at this reasonably accomplished age, I am still able to find myself anew.

Recently, I have been fortunate to gain the friendship of an interesting character. A smart, quick-witted, young “old chap” of a guy whose creativity and open-minded ideals speak volumes for his generation. At his age I was not nearly as wise, worldly, cultured, present, or relevant as he is. Even now his intellect far exceeds my own, and his ability to perceive others astounds me. He is very deliberate with his words, often taking what seems to me to be far too long to respond to my often off-kilter banter. But always following his reflection, he delivers an astute, provocative discourse on whatever topic I had mindlessly rambled into. Seriously, the guy can talk me under the table…and that is saying something.

And I must admit he is a bit off, as well. Regardless, or perhaps in spite of those facts, I find him very interesting.

As it goes with most new friendships there is the crush period. The time where everything about the new friend is fascinating and we often try to find a bit of ourselves in our new pal. And so my new friend has attempted to find fascination in me, and has asked for the privilege (his term, not mine) of reading some of my writing. I initially waved him off, figured he would find what he wanted or give up. But, after the third very polite request, I obliged.

It is strange; I can write for an unknown audience without fear. I can put it out there for the world to read, all of it…without a second thought. Yet when I directly hand over a few poems to my new friend, I am paralyzed.

As I said, my new friend is very perceptive. So, when I stuffed a few of my poems in his hand and continued on about the weather, he immediately detected my insecurity. He saw in my rushed speech and downcast eyes that I was nervous. And while I waited for him to speak, to interrupt my prattle, I reeled. He placed the pages face down on the table, then said “Ah yes, I see I was correct. You are an exhibitionist and shy, both.”

Which really put me to thought…what purpose am I serving with these characteristics, if characteristics do in fact serve us?

I suppose that those opposing characteristics, that in my case are so apparently extreme, benefit each other. I can only imagine that my unchecked exhibitionism would undoubtedly lead me to my depraved end, and that my need to slap the world in the face keeps me from becoming a total shut-in.

p.s. what you got in you; what it takes.

Good Morning, Everyone!

I'm finally back from the bosom of my family, got here late yesterday. It was a wonderful Thanksgiving. We had 27 people for dinner! We were even able to see my nieces husband before they sent him back to Iraq this past Sunday.

I haven't caught up on the comments yet, but I did see that Elena is still not feeling well. I hope you are doing better, and we will call you today. Love to you.

Wendy, GO SAINTS!

I don't watch football, but I will jump up and down with you and do the happy dance for your team!

Missed all of last weeks water therapy, but I got back into it Monday. (I had to bring my Dad back to town for doctors visit. It went pretty well, but they need to run more tests to see what the problem is.) After running around like a crazy thing for the last 5 days or so, I was a having a little trouble Monday. There are about 10 in the class, and at one point we stand facing the edge of the pool and grab our ankles to lift our leg in a hamstring curl.

Well, in this very huge echoing room (the pool is indoors) I pulled my leg back and this horrible pain shot down my leg. I grabbed the side of the pool and yelled "FUuuuuu...."

Not sure what the therapist would have said if I had got the "CK" out. :)

I have another session today and after that I am going...

BIRTHDAY SHOPPING!

J.'s birthday is Thursday, the 3rd. She said she didn't want much this year, but I am getting her a few things I know she will like, and taking her to dinner on Thursday.

I'll be back on tonight, and will catch up by then on the comments. Hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving!

Mayo, S.S., Elena, Wendy, Ergo, Amy, TJ, Martha, Welsh Anon, B.C., Andrea (It was nice to see you), Anima, Paperheart, Possum, Lewis, Miss T., Mya, P.J, Good Morning/Night, Singing anons, picture anons, happy anons, playful anons, loving anons, lurkers, Santa, elves and all...

apart from that bit of a complain I'm good, finished adjusting 2 more pairs of board shorts (I have a few, I wear them a lot in summer), it's a nice day, not so hot and they are predicting possible storms, def a lot of cloud about

well, congrats to them all for being nominated, but I either have never heard, or don't really like any of them :/

toujours said...

oh! i hope your eye heals very quick, ergo! rest it as much as you can.

nashville was fun, i have to admit it. the main reason we went down was to go to an ice show my folks attend every year -- the group fills a building with ice sculptures -- but we also did a little bit of shopping, too.

nashville's only two hours away, so it was a nice day trip.

toujours said...

i don't understand what the difference between a album and a record is? at first i thought they meant record as in a single track, but there's also a best song category. :/

idk. even when i was a teen, the grammy's seemed lame and out-of-sync.

ergoproxy said...

Oh that's not too far, the ice sculptures must look good, they do all sorts of things? I saw one of those ice hotels on tv the other night, Joanna Lumley travelled to the arctic circle in a quest to see the northern lights, she grew up in Malaysia and had a book about a penguin as a child with an illustration of them, she stayed one night in the ice hotel and she did eventually see them, I'd love to as well, they look totally unreal
oh and the point of that is, they had all ice sculptures inside the hotel, arctic animals, even chandeliers, all made of ice
(she is also a very funny lady)

ergoproxy said...

oh yeah, I missed that, what is the difference?
and I think there are too many award shows now, they are diluting each others relevance

toujours said...

this year the theme was the charlie brown christmas, and so the whole space was divided into rooms, each with a scene recreated in ice and with the music playing in the background. everything is sculpted from ice, something like a million pounds of it.

it was like walking through the cartoon. :)

11:29,

Those are the nominees? I'm glad I don't watch the Grammys. I always thought that award show was really lame. Well actually, I think all of them are. Super boring.

BUT

Though my choice for hard rock album should go to AC/DC, Hard Rock Performance: Either AC/DC or Alice in Chains.

Best Metal Performance should go to Megadeth.

I like Depeche Mode, so my choice for alternative music album should go to them.

ergoproxy said...

anon, I can read, like I said, I either don't really like them or haven't heard the songs.
My apologies for not personally being a big fan of any of the listed performers, not saying I can't see their talent, and don't enjoy an occasional listen to some of them, but none of them do much for me.

I hope the ones you like most win in their respective categories

mayo,

for the most part, today was a lost day, but this afternoon i sat in front of an open window, listened to the rain, and read a couple of volumes of flight. that was pleasant.

have you read any of flight? they're up to volume six, i think, and i want them all...but i end up just checking them out of the library. there's always something amazing in each volume, though, whether art or storytelling. i think my favorites from this volume are "the excitingly mundane life of kenneth shuri" by jp ahonen and "walters" by cory godbey. "dead at noon" by rodolphe guenoden didn't grab my attention art-wise, but it was an extremely well-told tale, probably the best scripted piece in the book.

reading those books always reminds me of reading heavy metal as a kid. the day it came in the mail was always a creative day, as the enthusiasm for art that magazine inspired could never be denied.

it's a good memory, and a mournful one, too. i wish i was that kid, still, sometimes.

only sometimes.

anyway, read them, if you haven't! they are wonderful little packages of beauty.

take care, mayo, and have a good night.

sweet dreams.

Little Johnny says, "I have a question for you. If there were three women eating ice cream cones in a shop, one was licking her cone, the second was biting her cone and the third was sucking her cone, which one is married?"

i don't understand what the difference between a album and a record is? at first i thought they meant record as in a single track, but there's also a best song category.

'Record of the Year' is for a single track. It takes things like production quality and arrangement into account, which makes it a very different award from 'Song of the Year' which is essentially a songwriter's award.

Just thought I'd clear that up for those who find it confusing. :)

Good Morning!

Ok, I didn't get caught up, but I will, tomorrow. After therapy yesterday and walking so much afterwards, I was hurting like a friggin weasel. Better today, fingers crossed!

Welsh anon, what a nice version of Happy Birthday. I'm sure J. will love it. Thanks from her to you too Ergo!

I finished shopping and wrapping yesterday, and picked up the cheesecake. She didn't want cake cake this year, so I will be putting candles on a cheesecake instead!

My Mum got her a card that says "To My Daughter", because she said she feels like she has another daughter in the family. We've been friends forever and a day, and I can't imagine life without her.

AWWW, there's a little squirrel outside playing in the leaves and running up and down a tree. It's darling. And now there's a couple of Blue Jays walking around. I need to get more bird feed for the feeder when I get bunny food this week.

Ergo, I hope your eye is doing better. A speck of dust feels like a boulder when you get it in your eye!

Ok, now there's three squirrels, two Blue Jays and two doves outside. I think we have an odd version of The Twelve Days of Christmas going on.

Speaking of Christmas, I want to know...who decided to put all the classic Christmas shows on at the end of November/very early December?! It used to be the week OF that Rudolph, The Grinch, Frosty, etc. were on, now it's right after Thanksgiving. Soon it will be "tonight on ABC, "Halloween 3"
followed by "Charlie Brown Escapes The Great Pumpkin To Grab A Tree For Christmas".

Mayo, S.S., Elena, Amy, Ergo, Wendy, TJ, B.C., Martha, Mya, Miss T., Welsh Anon, Andrea, Paperheart, Jade, Anima, anons, lurkers and anyone else I missed,

Have a great day.

Love,

Welsh Anon,

Have you ever heard of or had Tinker Cakes? I made some for heritage day at work a few years ago. (I took them and some bead work created in Cherokee, N.C.)

I think they are for May Day, and back to school times? All I know is they were a pain and a half to make. No amount of flour made it easier to roll out the sticky dough with grated apples.

Speaking of bead work, I need to find my dress that my Grandmum made for me when I was a baby. She made it out of blue leather, cut the fringes and did the beadwork. It's beautiful! I also have a beaded headband she made me. I also have lots of handmade bracelts, necklaces and a dream catcher from Cherokee, made by the elders.

Have a great day,

Time to Pretend

I'm feeling rough, I'm feeling raw, I'm in the prime of my life.
Let's make some music, make some money, find some models for wives.
I'll move to Paris, shoot some heroin, and fuck with the stars.
You man the island and the cocaine and the elegant cars.

This is our decision, to live fast and die young.
We've got the vision, now let's have some fun.
Yeah, it's overwhelming, but what else can we do.
Get jobs in offices, and wake up for the morning commute.

Forget about our mothers and our friends
We're fated to pretend
To pretend
We're fated to pretend
To pretend

I'll miss the playgrounds and the animals and digging up worms
I'll miss the comfort of my mother and the weight of the world
I'll miss my sister, miss my father, miss my dog and my home
Yeah, I'll miss the boredom and the freedom and the time spent alone.

There's really nothing, nothing we can do
Love must be forgotten, life can always start up anew.
The models will have children, we'll get a divorce
We'll find some more models, everything must run it's course.

We'll choke on our vomit and that will be the end
We were fated to pretend
To pretend
We're fated to pretend
To pretend

Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Go MGMT (and Silversun Pickups and Zac Brown Band)!!!

Hello Mayo, SS, Sweetcheeks, L (and J), Amy, Ergo, MissT, Martha, Welsh Anon, TJ, Elena, Possum, Red nosed reindeers (and humans too), everyone!!!

How are you all, today? Well and good and feeling the Christmas spirit, I hope!!!

~~~HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEN!!!!~~~
"Count your life by smiles, not tears.
Count your age by friends, not years."
I hope your day is filled with smiles, happiness, many hugs and much love!
L: Birthday cheesecake!!! Great (and yummy) idea! And, welcome back! You were missed. I'm glad to hear you had a nice visit/Thanksgiving with your parents. I'm also glad to hear you've resumed your water therapy (well, we could have done without that painful FU~UUUUUUU incident)! Let's try to not have more of those!
;)
Ergo: I'm sorry to hear about the eye trouble! I hope your vision is back to normal today!
Sweetcheeks: I'm torn to "shreds" in trying to decide who to cheer towards victory in that Grammy Metal catagory!!!!
I mean, Judas Priest ~ AC/DC ~ Slayer ~ Megadeath ~ Ministry ~ Lamb Of God!!!! How does one choose?
I don't know! That's such a tough one for me! Okay, my heart is telling me to cheer on LOG (today)!! So, follow my heart I must! GO LAMB OF GOD!!!!!
That ROCK category is a pretty tough choice too. I do have a question: When did Metallica STOP being METAL and start being HARD ROCK???
Perhaps that is a very good sign! Perhaps the Grammys have finally realized just how many great metal bands are out there so they had to move some of them to the HARD ROCK category!
Well, it's just a theory!
:P
7:04 ~ Thank you for clearing that up so eloquently (and clearly)!
11:23 ~ "Twelve and oh, Twelve and oh, Twelve and oh!!" I love it!!! I shall be singing that until the 15th (I hope and I BELIEVE)!!!
TJ: I'm happy to hear you had such a nice time in Nashville!!!
I think that is all, for now! Have a great day, everyone!!!
Hugs and Love,
~Namaste~
6/Wendy
PS: Feel better soon, Elena!!
PPS: Congratulations to all the Grammy nominees!!!!
PPPS: A special congratulations to all the Louisiana artists who were nominated for a Grammy this year:
Allen Tousaint, Harry Connick Jr, Terrence Blanchard, Britney Sprears, The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Beausoleil avec Michael Doucet, Buckwheat Zydeco, Pine Leaf Boys, the Magnolia Sisters, Cedric Watson et Bijou Creole, Carlos Miguel Prieto, and anyone I missed!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY J!!!!!! (on your 3rd)
I like those quotes anon
Don't know if he would have been called a modern day philosopher, but here's a take on it.
"...another few seconds to the edge...The Edge...There is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over. The others-the living-are those who pushed their control as far as they felt they could handle it, and then pulled back, or slowed down, or did whatever they had to when it came time to choose between Now and Later."
Hey, Wendy, Miss T., B.C., Ergo and anons. Thanks for Jen for the birthday wishes, I know she will be to thank you herself either later tonight or tomorrow.
Just a moment, getting ready to go out, but wanted to tell everyone Good Night, and yeah, it sounds corny, but love, peace and happiness to all.
Anon, there's a old Cherokee saying that there are Two Wolves inside you, Good and Evil, that are constantly fighting each other. It's true that there is gooda and evil in all of us. No one is all sinner or all saint. The saying continues with the grandson of an Elder asking which Wolf will win. The Elder answers
"The one you feed."
We should thank Friedrich Nietzsche quoting anon @ December 3, 2009 4:29 PM for posting the quote that lead to this being declared modern philosophy day at Mayo's.
Yes. That is so true. The real problems arise when individuals can't and won't acknowledge the evil which dwells within themselves. When they refuse to see and recognize that evil.
The
Wolves Within
An old Grandfather said to his grandson, who came to him with anger at a friend who had done him an injustice...
"Let me tell you a story. I too, at times, have felt great hate for those who have taken so much, with no sorrow for what they do. But hate wears you down, and does not hurt your enemy. It's like taking poison and wishing your enemy would die."
"I have struggled with these feelings many times. It is as if there are two wolves inside me; one is good and does no harm. He lives in harmony with all around him and does not take offense when no offense was intended. He will only fight when it is right to do so, and in the right way.
But...the other wolf... ah! The littlest thing will send him into a fit of temper. He fights everyone, all of the time, for no reason. He cannot think because his anger and hate are so great. It is helpless anger, for his anger will change nothing."
"Sometimes it is hard to live with these two wolves inside me, for both of them try to dominate my spirit."
The boy looked intently into his Grandfather's eyes and asked, "Which one wins, Grandfather?"
The Grandfather smiled and quietly said, "The one I feed."
Version II
One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.
He said, "My son, the battle is between the two "wolves" inside us all.
One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.
The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed"!
hi amy
*brings in plate of cookies*
I assume hot chocolate is just boiling milk poured over chocolate and stirred to melt,(which is heavenly but so rich) whereas cocoa is with cocoa.
Though "hot chocolate" seems to be used to describe any hot choc flavoured milk in reality
Hi J!
Original Punk J said...
Thanks Ergo! I iz full of Mexican dinner and I haz a happee. :)
ergoproxy said...
oh Mexican dinner always makes for a happee!
so you had a good birthday?
Original Punk J said...
Yeah, I did. It was quiet, no big fuss. Read, mucked around the house, opened presents, went to dinner.
Lisa got me 2 DVDs--Hellboy and Mamma Mia!--3 CDs--Punkarama volume something or other, it's a series of mixed punk songs; Puddle of Mudd, and yes, ABBA's greatest hits--a bag of assorted hair clasps and such, a little stuffed bear, and a pasta/pastry wheel that I got a couple weeks ago. Plus there's cheesecake in the fridge for tomorrow. :)
Thanks for the birthday wishes yesterday and today, that was really sweet. *hugs*
toujours said...
*sneak attack birthday glomp!*
ergoproxy said...
not a problem J! I was going to send an ecard too but for some reason I keep getting a server error, don't know what the deal is, though we do have bad weather about
the gifts sound nice, I have ABBA's hits too, it is just music that makes me happy, I think as it was so prevalent for so many years growing up, I have the videos of Abba gold 1 and 2 as well, they are great if you can get them
Does it have Bang a Boomerang? They wrote it in Oz and I think the lyrics are hilarious "dummy dum dummy dummy dum dum" what you write when you can't actually think of anything to write, lol
ergoproxy said...
hey TJ!
how iz you?
Hey TJ! Thanks for the DM on Twitter, that was cool. And yeah, about the cheesecake. YUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMM. :)
Tell you the truth, Ergo, I haven't looked too closely at the ABBA song titles, but I'll check them out and let you know tomorrow. I know Money (x3) is on it. Does that help?
I stood upon a path today,
and realized that the fork
I followed led away
from hearth and comfort.
I strode on into chaos.
seeking for adventure,
swept up in currents
of destruction and despair.
I struggled forward
against the howling storm
until—exhausted—I stopped
and realized I was a fool.
I stayed my course no more,
turning back, and hurried home
to you—sped onward by
remembrance and dreams of warmth.
Green, Green Grass Of Home
The old home town looks the same
As I step down from the train
And there to meet me is my Mama and Papa;
Down the road I look and there runs Mary.
Hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch The green, green grass of home.
Yes, they'll all come to meet me
Arms raching smiling sweetly
It's good to touch The green, green grass of home.
The old house is still standing,
Tho' the paint is cracked and dry.
And there's that old oak tree
That I used to play on.
Down the lane I walk with my sweet Mary
Hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch
the green, green grass of home.
Yes, they'll...
Then I awake and look around me,
At four green walls, that surround me.
And I realize, I was only dreamig
For there's a guardAnd there's a sad old padre,
Arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak
Again, I'll touch the green, green grass of home.
Yes, they'll all come to see me
In the shade of that old oak tree
As they lay me
'neath the green, green grass of home.
Delilah
I saw the light on the night that I passed by her window
I saw the flickering shadows of love on her blind
She was my woman
As she deceived me I watched and went out of my mind
My, my, my, delilah
Why, why, why, delilah
I could see that girl was no good for me
But I was lost like a slave that no man could free
At break of day when that man drove away, I was waiting
I cross the street to her house and she opened the door
She stood there laughing
I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more
My, my, my delilah
Why, why, why delilah
So before they come to break down the door
Forgive me delilah I just couldn’t take any more
[insert trumpet solo here]
She stood there laughing
I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more
My, my, my, delilah
Why, why, why, delilah
So before they come to break down the door
Forgive me delilah I just couldn’t take any more
Forgive me delilah I just couldn’t take any more
Haha. Fooled you. Tom Jones was little old Welshie all along. You'd never 'ave guessed would you? Be honest now, I fooled you didn't I.!!
So OPJ you like Mr Tom Jones. Well it does'nt surprise me one bit. He's got a hell'va voice. You should all come down to my local pub one night and have a good old sing song. Tom Jones songs are popular, oh, and Shirley Bassey, "The minute you walked in the joint, I could see you were a man of distinction, a real big spender, good looking. so refined ..."
You can imagine the scene, a pub full of drunken welsh people singing their little hearts out. Brilliant. We do like to sing here in Wales, well damn it there's nothing else to do here is there!
Do you like a good old sing song Mayo? Don't forget if you're coming over to Wales give me a call and I'll organise a 'little do' in your honour at the pub. We always end the night by singing the Welsh National Anthem:-
Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mâd,
Tros ryddid gollasant eu gwaed.
Chorus:
Gwlad, Gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad,
Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r heniaith barhau.
Don't forget to practice your welsh Mayo, because I'll expect you to join in with the singing.
I was just going to hit publish when I saw you sneak in there Ergo. How are you?
Welsh anon said...
Have to tell you this . A few seconds after I published my comment the phone rang and the first thing I thought was, bloody hell, Mayo's coming over to Wales!! Aaargh. How the hell did he get my phone number?
It wasn't Mayo though. Shame really. Never mind. One day maybe.
