guts

It is interesting when you get a fresh perspective of yourself from a new acquaintance. Even at this reasonably accomplished age, I am still able to find myself anew.

Recently, I have been fortunate to gain the friendship of an interesting character. A smart, quick-witted, young “old chap” of a guy whose creativity and open-minded ideals speak volumes for his generation. At his age I was not nearly as wise, worldly, cultured, present, or relevant as he is. Even now his intellect far exceeds my own, and his ability to perceive others astounds me. He is very deliberate with his words, often taking what seems to me to be far too long to respond to my often off-kilter banter. But always following his reflection, he delivers an astute, provocative discourse on whatever topic I had mindlessly rambled into. Seriously, the guy can talk me under the table…and that is saying something.

And I must admit he is a bit off, as well. Regardless, or perhaps in spite of those facts, I find him very interesting.

As it goes with most new friendships there is the crush period. The time where everything about the new friend is fascinating and we often try to find a bit of ourselves in our new pal. And so my new friend has attempted to find fascination in me, and has asked for the privilege (his term, not mine) of reading some of my writing. I initially waved him off, figured he would find what he wanted or give up. But, after the third very polite request, I obliged.

It is strange; I can write for an unknown audience without fear. I can put it out there for the world to read, all of it…without a second thought. Yet when I directly hand over a few poems to my new friend, I am paralyzed.

As I said, my new friend is very perceptive. So, when I stuffed a few of my poems in his hand and continued on about the weather, he immediately detected my insecurity. He saw in my rushed speech and downcast eyes that I was nervous. And while I waited for him to speak, to interrupt my prattle, I reeled. He placed the pages face down on the table, then said “Ah yes, I see I was correct. You are an exhibitionist and shy, both.”

Which really put me to thought…what purpose am I serving with these characteristics, if characteristics do in fact serve us?

I suppose that those opposing characteristics, that in my case are so apparently extreme, benefit each other. I can only imagine that my unchecked exhibitionism would undoubtedly lead me to my depraved end, and that my need to slap the world in the face keeps me from becoming a total shut-in.

p.s. what you got in you; what it takes.

the funny thing was that at one of the first things my ex and i went to -- it wasn't even an event, it was a business meeting/social -- people didn't recognize us as newcomers -- we already looked like scafolk. i remember the baroness at the time telling em i was going to have to introduce myself, because no one was goign to know that i was new. lol

i don't know if i'm as much of a "hippie" as i was, there might be some adjustments -- like wearing more veils to cover my hair when it's purple or green! lol -- but i still think that even if my only friends are online, i'll still be able to go to an event and not be lonely.

I'm sure you'd quickly find people to hang with, you did it at the concerts, being friendly is a good way to meet people then you can figure who you fit best with

toujours said...

yeah, music is my other home. it's brought me some great friends. :)

i suppose it's different when you have children, though? you always have a family then, a heart's home, don't you?

ergoproxy said...

they do give you a grounding, but they can't replace friends of your own, you still need them, the relationship with your kids is a lot more difficult and you can feel very lonely within yourself. The 'family' you have with close friends and others you share with can be a lot closer in ways than your actual family, it doesn't have the expectations and responsibilities.
I think both are wonderful in different ways.

and like they say you can choose your friends but you can't choose your family, especially in-laws lol
(lucky it's only one set that I find difficult to be around)

Hey Ergo and TJ

I'm tired but okay. How are you guys?

toujours said...

whoa elena! hi! did you have a successful day shopping?

ergo, i really appreciate your answer -- it's something i'm not going to have experience with, and i've wondered. :)

ergoproxy said...

not a problem TJ, I think you still have to feed yourself, so to speak in any relationship, no one thing can ever be everything a person needs to grow and feel whole within themslelves

I did get lots of shopping done. It was fun but I wish someone else would wrap the gifs. I'm terrible at it.

good to hear elena!!

I'm good thanks

ergo, you can never have just soup, right? you need bread too. :)

elena, if i was there, i'd wrap the gifts for you -- i love doing that!

excellent analogy TJ! :]

elena I am not a huge fancy wrapper, but I do enjoy it. But corners always seem to cut through the paper and you end up with sticky tape patching

Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? You know I really loved shopping for the holiday when the girls were little. It was such fun but now not so much. Maybe the real fun was buying the gifts and trying to hide them until Christmas. I would come up with such creative hiding places. Then as they got older there was no need to hide them (Santa was unmasked). So I’d just wrap the gifts and put them under the tree. What was I thinking? A few years ago Sunshine informed me that each year she would carefully unwrap each gift, give it a good inspection, and then wrap it back up. Hell she didn’t just do her own she unwrapped the sisters stuff and told them what they were getting. Damn the girl was good I never suspected. So now when I have to wrap gifts I kinds wonder why I bother. I suppose cause its tradition.

Anyway if you haven’t started your shopping yet get cracking. It is important to have time to choose just the right gift for each person. Doesn’t have to cost much, just has to come from the heart.

Well I’m tired so off I go. Take care.

mayo,

my gosh, i was just thinking back over the day to see what i might share from it, and oh how long ago this morning seemed! it wasn't even an extremely busy day, but somehow it stretched out.

or, you know, maybe it's because i'm up way past my usual bedtime. huh.

i had to go out to the store today too (though i wasn't as brave as elena, and just went to replenish some supplies). my stepdad came to pick me up, and as we were driving back the sunset was hogging our attention. it was so beautiful, i can't even begin to describe the brilliant colors.

but my first thought when i saw it was to wish i had brought my camera along, because i wanted to share it here.

i don't know what's going to happen next, not really. i don't know where i'm going to end up, or what i'll end up doing, or who i'll end up spending my time with. but i'm glad this place, and these people, and you, are a part of my life right now.

take care, mayo, and have a good night, and sweet dreams.

A new guy in town walks into a bar and notices a large jar filled to the brim with $10 bills. The man approaches the bartender and asks, "What's up with the jar?"

"Well, you pay $10, and if you pass three tests, then you get all the money."

"What are the three tests?" asks the man

"Gotta pay first."

So the guy gives him the $10 bucks, and the bartender adds it to the jar.

"OK, here's what you have to do. First, you have to drink that whole bottle of pepper tequila -- the WHOLE thing at once -- and you can't make a face while doing it. Second, there's a pit bull chained up out back with a sore tooth. You have to remove the tooth with your bare hands. Third, there is a 90-year-old woman upstairs who's never had an orgasm in her life. You gotta make things right for her."

"Well, I know I've paid my $10 bucks," says the man, "but I'm not an idiot. No wonder you've collected so much money -- that's impossible!"

The new guy proceeds to drink several whiskeys, and eventually, he gets up his nerve.

"Wherez zat teeqeelah?" he slurs.

He grabs the bottle of pepper tequila with both hands and downs it, gulp by gulp. Tears are streaming down his cheeks, but he doesn't make a face. Next, he staggers out back. Everyone in the bar hears a huge scuffle outside -- barking, yelping and growling, then silence.

Just when they think the man must be dead, he staggers back into the bar with his shirt ripped and gashes across his body.

"NOW," he says, "wherez at ol' lady with the sore tooth?"

A guy walks into a bar and says to the barman, "Give me six double vodkas."

The barman says, "Wow, you must have had one hell of a day."

"Yeah, I just found out my oldest son is gay."

The next day, the same guy comes into the bar and asks for six more double vodkas. When the bartender asks what's wrong, the man says, "I just found out that my youngest son is gay, too!"

On the third day, the guy comes into the bar and orders another six double vodkas. The bartender says, "Jesus! Doesn't anybody in your family like women?"

The man downs the first drink and shakes his head, "Yeah, my wife!"

Hello everyone. Hope you all had a good weekend.

I went to the local Xmas Farmer's Market yesterday. Had samples of xmas pudds, xmas cake, mince pies, welsh whisky, cider, wine, more welsh whisky. Yeah I had o great day! Ergo I'm sure you would've loved it. I know you love to cook. They had allsorts of chutneys, pickles, cheese, jams etc. I bought quite a lot of xmas presents there. I like to buy locally and do my bit for the local economy. Then I went home and got the xmas tree out of the attic. Just finished decorating it. Not really in the mood to decorate the house this year. Anyway the tree is up and it looks o.k. not great but o.k. Oh damn it, it'll have to do. Can't be arsed to fiddle about with tinsel.

elena said...

Nice to see you Welsh anon. It sounds like you had a wonderful time. I understand your feeling about decorating. I think I'm in a bit of a "Charlie Brownage" feeling myself. I put up a small fake tree. Threw up a bit of garland. That's all I can make myself do. No one is ever home long enough to see it anyway.

In a way I hate that I do less and less each year. But I just can't seem to find the spirit I'm missing. So here I sit at the store, surrounded by bills, listening to Christmas music and trying to smile.

But in the end as long as I have my family that's all that is important. Really that's all I need for Christmas.

Take care.

good morning! (it is too still morning...at least for 15 more minutes!)

i always have weird dreams when i sleep late...the last one i remember from before waking is sitting on the side of a grassy hill, telling adam lazzara my life story at his request. i believe he had a small animal on a leash, too...though i think it was a lamb, not a dog.

um.

i don't even get why adam lazzara -- i haven't listened to tbs for awhile! all i can guess is that i have a few friends over on twitter and lj that speak very favorably of him.

weird ol' brain.

i better beat it into submission with more coffee.

ugh.

with the cut in my hours, my sister suggested i file for unemployment to cover the loss of wages. i've never done that before, but her husband used to be temporarily laid off once a year and that's what they did.

i just finished filing out my claim and oh man, i'm sure i did something wrong, and the big bad goverment people are going to come get me. but i remember back when i was married, there was one summer my ex was unemployed, and we went through the same anxiety every time he had to fill out a report...so there must be something about the process that's paranoia-inducing. lol

anyway, i did my best, and now i'll just cross my fingers, hope for the best...and work up a new budget for my reduced income, just in case.

gonna go have lunch now, play zelda, and forget all about the form-filling-out worries.

see you all later!

Good afternoon/evening/night/morning Mayo, SS, Sweetcheeks, Amy, L, J, Elena, Ergo, TJ, Martha, Welsh anon, MissT, Heyme anon, everyone!!!

How are you all, today? Wonderful, I hope!!!!

Ohhh... lots of food talk last night! YUMMY!!!!

I made two date rolls this morning. They are extra yummy because I used six cups of pecans!!! I do have a powdered sugar mess in the kitchen that I really should clean up... soon.

Although, Sandy Ann did do a great job "mopping" the floor with her tongue!

:P

Heyme anon: I'm sorry I could not be of more help to you!

Elena: I'm happy to hear you're feeling better!!!

Sweetcheeks: What are you up to, these days? Are you getting ready for Christmas?

Ergo: I do believe I require more lozengers today. Many, many lozengers (and cough drops too)!!!!! Perhaps an antibiotic!

Did you all see Bob Dylan's video for "Must Be Santa" (from his first ever Christmas album)? I think it's hilarious!!!!!

~~~Must Be Santa by Bob Dylan!!! LOL!!! Love those reindeer names!~~~
I just love it!!!!! I've been singing that one for days. Well, in between singing "The Saints Are Coming", "I Believe", "On March The Saints", "Bring Em To The Dome", "When The Saints Go Marching In" and chanting WHO DAT and 12 and O, 12 and O, 12 and O!!!!
:D
I shall be right back with a very Metal Christmas song for you all!!!
Hugs and Love,
:P
YAY! I now know what to get my mother for Christmas!!!!
Don't forget, everyone: both Dylan's and Halford's cds make great stocking stuffers!!!!
Have a great day, everyone!!!!!
hey TJ dealing with government always gives me that "men in dark suits knocking at the door" fear too
hey wendy *passes over lozenges*
hey welsh anon I only ever really decorate the tree, most years we go away so I've never seen the point and so haven't got extra decorations. I do put merry xmas on our front gate though, that uses up all the old tinsel (rotten shedding stuff)
hey elena hope you are having an good day at the store. I used to be in charge of xmas music at the department store where I worked, used to put the Chipmunks on and the switch would light up from nearly every department to tell me to TURN IT OFF!!! Some of the guys from small electrical would even make threats! lol
MissTottenham said...
Hiya guys, how are you all?
I'm OK. It was the anniversary of Dominic's death this saturday. Cos of that we didn't put our decorations up this weekend, we are gonna do it next weekend. Have you all got yours up yet? I swear people put them up earlier each year. Some people near us have started putting them up in November.
Good luck to anyone who's gonna be struggling with decorations anytime soon. I just cannot be arsed this year. It doesn't feel like xmas at all. This is the first year I've felt this way. Does it feel like crimbo to you guys yet?
Welsh anon, that xmas market sounds good. In Sheffield town centre, they have stalls from Germany and Holland selling food and gifts. I love the xmas market but it's not a big propper one like at Lincoln. We were talking about going there this year but can't be arsed now.
I'm off to Meadowhell tomorrow with sis. Not staying long. In, get vouchers, do one shop, out again. Home in time for the chippy, sis'll want scraps but you know what they are now hahahaha!
I had a weird dream last night. Dad came back but we lost him, not him dying agian, we literally lost him in a shop. Then my cousin came asking me to look for Dominic and all the time I had this huge pile of CD's in my arms that was always trying to slip away. We never found him though, he didn't come back. And through all of this my cockatiel had turned from grey to purple with all glittery purple round the edges of his wings. I woke up and said to myself "what the fuck was that all about".
Well, the police have been in touch asking for my birth certificate. I've had to order a long one as it's all they accept. In Sheffield you ususally only get a square one with your name on but they wanna see the long one with my parents names on. Dunno why that matters but it does.
So, that's the update. I'm off for a bath now.
Catch you later.
I took a break from cleaning, right now I'm in the middle of dying my hair. Again, ha. What are you up to sugarplum? Getting ready for Christmas? I have to go Christmas card shopping sometime this week, but I don't want to get anything lame.
People have been putting up their decor around here for more than a month now, way too early for decoratin' but I guess it's just in case if it snows. It's been snowing in parts of the country, but the weird thing is, even if it's normal around my area, so far we've been spared.
Mother Nature sure can be odd at times, but I ain't complainin' despite the cold.
Miss T: Special hugs for you. I hope the anniversary went okay. I'm glad to hear you're alright. In some cases, if feels like Chrimbo is coming, but it's weird how in some days it actually doesn't.
Well, I hope everyone's alright. I'll probably be back later on. Take care y'all!
mayo,
so, of course after that lovely long conversation with ergo yesterday about bread and soup and so on, i had the urge for soup for dinner (well, technically, supper, right? *heh*)
i asked my mom if i could raid her pantry, and then just built a pot of soup from bits and pieces, totally making it up as i went along. it ended up being another version of my eternal barley & veg soup (this time it had curry powder in it!), but it's the creation of it that's so much fun. soup is the best food, you know. you can hardly ever get it wrong, and when it all comes together so well, sitting down with a bowl of your very own soup becomes something more than just eating. it's very, very satisfying.
(and yes, it's difficult to resist quoting "double, double toil and trouble; fire burn, and cauldron bubble"...*heehee*)
you know, it's a little weird writing this tonight...i'm getting flashbacks to the days when i cuddled up on the couch, alone in the room but for the fire in the fireplace and your portrait over the mantel.
but it's the things like this, my nightly half-journal-entry/half-pen-pal-letter, and my magic with the soup pot, that keep me reminded to myself. it's easy to think i'm lost, but there is a breadcrumb trail, after all.
good night, mayo. i don't know if you cook at all, but you really should try your hand at making soup. trust me, it's fun. *grin*
sweet dreams.
Oh Toujours making soup is NOT fun. Believe me!! I was making Lobsgows last night for my tea, braising steak, potatoes, carrots, swede, leeks, throw them in a large saucepan simmer for a few hours and voila Lobsgows! Simple of course unless you burn the bloody thing! Well the saucepan was actually black and stuck to the cooker top and the kitchen stank of burnt soup. I was so angry with myself. I swear if I was double jointed I would've kicked myself in the arse!
I ended up having a piece of toast and marmalade for my tea.
I was supposed to go to a Christmas Carols Concert by Candlelight last night, but I thought it would be safer for me and everyone else if I stayed at home. Little old Welshie and candles, not a good combination.
So Mayo don't listen to Toujours. She lies I tell you. Making soup is NOT fun. Don't do it Mayo! Buy a can of soup instead.
By the way Mr Mayonaise I don't know if you're buying us gifts this xmas, but if you are then maybe you could hire a chef to cook my xmas lunch. Marco Pierre White if possible. You see I'm cooking xmas lunch this year. I've never quite got the hang of cooking. My sister's a brilliant cook, honestly she can prepare a banquet in minutes. Everything I cook seems to resemble a pile of vomit on a plate! I think the whole family's slightly nervous about this xmas. Can't say I blame them really. So if your budget does stretch to hiring Marco Pierre then I'd be forever grateful to you sir. If not then a new saucepan will do!
One Christmas holiday Sherlock Holmes and Mr Watson went on a camping trip. After a fulfilling meal they lay down in their tent for the night and went to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend awake. “Watson, look up and tell me what you see.” Watson replied, “I see millions and millions of stars.” “What does that tell you?” Holmes questioned. Watson pondered for a minute. “Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets.
Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Logically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful and that we are small and insignificant . Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.” “Is that all?” Holmes asked. “Yes,” Watson replied. “Why have I missed something?” Holmes was quiet for a moment, then spoke. “Watson you idiot! Someone has stolen the tent!”
The lesson: This Christmas don’t you forget the obvious.
Hello Mayo, SS, Sweetcheeks, MissT, J and L, Martha, Amy, Ergo, TJ, Elena, anonymous members of the Who Dat nation, everyone!!!!
How are you all, tonight? High and dry, I hope!!!
Elena: You had four inches of snow overnight; I had seven inches of rain!!!! Merry Christmas! LOL!
And, more rain is on the way! Well, my parish is already under a "state of emergency" so it can't get much worse (for all the unfortunate people who already have water in their homes and are driving down their streets in those aforementioned boats).
Mayo: If "Welsh Anon" is correct and you are getting Christmas gifts for us this year, would you please hire a fine looking contruction worker to come dig that ditch by my garage? Please?
*bats eyelashes*
I'll even be willing to go out there and help him! Bring him some sweet iced tea and cool towels to wipe his sweat!
:P
4:21 ~ Hell yeah!!!! Who Dat?!!!! And, I believe!!!!!
"Go Saints, all the way
Saints go all the way!"
Ergo: Thank you for my lozengers!
Sweetcheeks: I know what you mean! I'm trying to get ready for Christmas. I really am! I mean, I was doing so good with the indoor decorations (before Thanksgiving). I was on a roll!!!! I got that all done! But, the time came to start my outside decorations and the weather would just not cooperate (or, I just didn't "feel like" doing it).
Well, I suppose it's a good thing I didn't get my outside decorations done! They would be drowned or at least quite water logged!
Ha, and there lies the silver lining of all those, recent, storm clouds!!!!
*big smile*
I think that is all for now...
Ohhhh... wait! I shall be back with one more thing. Hang on!
Good Evening, Everyone!
Wanted to pop in for a few minutes while dinner is cooking. J. is out for the day, will be home in a bit. She did some shopping today with birthday money from her family.
I decorated the apartment today, mostly the living room and dining room, and have a Christmas CD playing right now. The lights are low, the ficas tree is twinkling...(we decorate that instead of a regular tree so Rain can't get to the lights)and it's so quiet except the soft music.
I read back over the comments and found myself thinking how it's so...comforting, to see the names here, to read the good, the sad, the funny, the words of people who have come to mean so much to me. I can see Elena standing in the bookstore stacking the shelves while snow pours down, Ergo calling the internet company while running about the house doing a dozen things, Wendy baking date rolls while bouncing about to Judas Priest, B.C. about shopping with the first snowfalls falling, Miss T. holding pictures of Dominic and her Dad, memories happy and sad, TJ curling up on the chair with a cup of coffee and a book, and so many more names and faces.
Welsh anon, you may not have been here long, but you are becoming part of that as well. Thank you.
It's strange, I haven't felt very Christmasy for several years, but this year, it is there. That old feeling from yesteryears that wasn't about presents, stores with overdone displays and the like.
It's about love.
Merry Christmas Charlie Brown.
Love ya,
L.
Okay, TWO more things!
I just heard about the most wonderful program to help teenagers in NOLA!
This may be of interest to all the budding chefs (or, just people who like to cook or want to help the youth of NOLA)!
The program is called "The Comfort Food" program and it is run by
~~~Chef John Besh.~~~

His motto:

~~~Cook with soul. Cook with love.~~~
His program helps NOLA area youths dealing with post Katrina stress.
You can find out more about the program and how you can help by sending an e~mail to:
comfortfoodnola.com
:)
And, the SECOND "One more thing which turned into TWO more things" is:
~~~HIM's HEARTKILLER!!!!!~~~

That's right! The first single from their upcoming album!!!!!

For those who wish to sing along:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Farewell heartless world,
I'll send you a postcard burnt
and the flames you tried so hard to extinguish
With fear of failing
I'll write down everything I have learned
And edit it down to a single word
LOVE
for you I'm waiting, anticipating
Sparks will fly, beneath the Luna alight
Lazarus at Frankenstein’s,
Babe, I'll be a flatliner for a heart killer
Will we die, above the laser light
For you I'm open wide
Babe, I'll be a flatliner for a heart killer
heart killer!
Top hats off to the return
of the beat to lick a wound to
Cursed for some and blessed for a few
It doesn’t have to make any sense at all
Come hither and we'll fall
In love, for love
I'm crawling out of patience baby
Sparks will fly, beneath the Luna alight
Lazarus at Frankenstein’s,
Babe, I'll be a flatliner for a heart killer
Will we die, above the laser (?) light
For you I'm open wide
Babe, I'll be a flatliner for a heart killer
heart killer!
Paint all your sorrows for me to sing
Heartkiller
draw your pain and hear me hum it out
Sparks will fly, beneath the Luna alight
Lazarus at Frankenstein’s,
Babe, I'll be a flat liner for a heart killer
Will we die, above the laser (?) light
For you I'm open wide
Babe, I'll be a flat liner for a heart killer
heartkiller
HIM
HeartKiller
Don't forget, a pre order of that album/cd makes a GREAT stocking stuffer!!!!
Ouch.
This Is War finds 30 Seconds To Mars in the midst of a mighty siege between its tendency for borderline awful and un-inventive rock music and intelligent, showmen-like poetic lyricism and programming. However, the dark side that is lame top 40 modern rock usually wins the day.
“Kings and Queens” and the title track recall My Chemical Romance circa The Black Parade, only they lack any pronounced themes. Album opener, “Escape”, features Jared Leto’s sex-god whispers before it explodes into a chorus of prepubescent, angsty screams. The first part is kind of interesting, and feels like some wonderfully cheesy post apocalyptic sci-fi tribal chant, but then it breaks down into screaming that would make Gerard Way yawn. Meanwhile, “100 Suns” comes off like a bad hangover from “Kings and Queens”. It’s two minutes of acoustic guitar while Leto whispers really meaningful, quasi-intelligent, and emotionally relevant poetry. Sadly, it feels like they’re going for the lowest common denominator and they’ve stripped themselves down too far on an album that proudly touts its effects and technological spin. Plus, the crowd adulation at the end is a clear sign that Leto has some kind of messiah complex.
In “Hurricane”, Leto’s vocals are actually real and earnest; they strain like there’s some actual heartbreak behind them, not mindless screaming done for the sake of developing a character. And while some may drive screwdrivers into their brains due to Kanye West’s involvement, there’s no better combination of talents. Both the band and West have a history of overwrought emotional displays that are borderline absurd.
Harsh review.
That's sure to get the 30-STM fangirls out here to defend their beloved idiot's.
ergoproxy said...
Hi Amy, that sucks having to pay bills, but I suppose it's a stress relief
how's your day? still snowing?
Anonymous said...
What are they going to defend? The Leto's prettiness? They are pretty. The new cd isn't so pretty.
Anonymous said...
Be careful. That site isn't wild about MCR either. They call Bullets a guilty pleasure and say that MCR was good before they "got lost on the road to emo-pop fame" (referring to TBP).
toujours said...
hello hello. :)
how's it going tonight?
i envy elena her snow! the only thin i didn't like about last year's winter storm in seattle was that all my winter gear was in storage. if i hadn't had to try to keep my shoes dry, i would've fully enjoyed the white & cold. :)
and l., that was lovely. *hug*
Anonymous said...
MCR has a lot going for them such as loyal fans and good ideas. And a GREAT live show. So much energy.
30-stm has an..... actor.
Anonymous said...
Sorry to burst your bubble, but This is War has generally been getting good reviews.
ergoproxy said...
HI TJ! I would like to see snow, but from what I gather, just a bit and not for too long, lol
I haven't got long, I have my last student for the last time this year and I need to go buy some more silver decorations, I have done the tree in all silver and white this year for a change, but it needs more strings of silver beads
how was your day?
toujours said...
my day was well on the nice side. :)
you would like snow in seattle, then -- it's usually gone by dinnertime. just enough time to make snowmen and have snowball fights, and then back to the rain!
your tree sounds so pretty. :)
ergoproxy said...
thanks I'll take a photo of it, I didn't put lights on it though, they are a whole 'nother story lol
the cats are currently playing in the tree's box and one of the dangly stars has a slightly munched arm, courtesy of playful Tom, it's now a bit higher up on the tree
Anonymous said...
Getting good reviews does not mean it's automatically a great band.
Did you ever notice how hypocritical the 30 - stm fans are?
toujours said...
lol my sister (who is inundated with cats) gave up on putting up a tree loooong ago.
have you ever seen "national lampoon's christmas vacation"? there's a scene in it with a cat chewing on electrical cords -- it's horrible and hilarious!
ergoproxy said...
oh yes, I love that movie!! I can't wait for it to be shown this year I watch it every time
I love the undoing of the tree,just cracks me up!
we used to tie our tree to the wall back at my parents as the cats would end up tipping it!
ok I'm off for my last titoring for the year
Not all 30stm fans are hypocritical. Some are hypocrites and a couple of those come here.
toujours said...
i haven't watched it for a few years now, it was my ex's favorite so it was nice to have a break from watching every year! but it's such a funny movie, i know i'll be watching it again eventually.
i remember instructions for attaching your tree to the ceiling as a way to stabilize it, must have been in martha or something.
growing up, our family cat was content to just sit underneath, i think she thought the gift boxes were her personal castle walls!
Hi BC.
toujours said...
hey there bc. :)
so i was just reading some winter poetry, and this one made me go "wow."
Untitled [Toward night]
by Kevin Goodan
Toward night, frail flurries of snow. Fingernails of willows scratching frost from the edges of the kitchen window where I watch the field beyond the fence where once corn was taller than a man can reach but now I gaze into the kitchen of the next farmhouse and watch the man with a bad leg hobble from sink to table to feed his mother with a spoon. I keep the lights off and study snow to augur from the flakes what fortune I may. The furnace does its duty and cars pass, swirls of flurry captured in fading prisms of red. If I stood on the road it would glow and crackle beneath my feet. The air would be muted, my own breath sounding as though it came from another body, a shadow leaning faintly toward me as though to whisper any comfort. Animals would unshelter themselves to stand waiting at the fence. Snow would settle everything. I would cup my hands, realizing I had become what it was I wanted to be. The body beside me would breathe on. The two of us.
Anonymous said...
"There is such a thing as a fluke."
I dont' like 30 either but damn BC, I don't think you know what that word means.
Anonymous said...
I get bothered when I'm trying to make a point (this time about 30 and how pretentious them and their fans are) and someone like BC agrees with me but in a way that makes it sound dumb.
Look up some words before you use them and get off my side please! You're making my side look bad!!
bc, no snow for us, unfortunately. i bet you have some, though don't you?
Anonymous said...
If you knew what it meant, then why use it wrong? A fluke is one unexpected stroke of good luck or brilliance. That's hardly what you would say about a bad band getting a lot of good reviews.
Anonymous said...
Ignore it, BC. This person came here to pick a fight and when it didn't work now she's picking on you. Don't give her the satisfaction.
Have a good night. You too, 30stm hating anon. :)
Anonymous said...
No I came to give my opinion, not pick a fight. Not liking Jared Leto is considered picking a fight?
Yes BC ignore everyone who can teach you something when you use the wrong word, it's gotten you so far.
Anonymous said...
So, 12:13. it can't be a fluke when a bad band gets a good review?
Anonymous said...
TJ, that's good. Right now we're just getting icy now, the kind that melts right away, but it's cold outside, so I'm sure some of it is gonna stick.
Goodnight 12:33 sweet dreams, and thanks.
mayo,
i agree with l.; for some reason, this year i'm getting that little happy vibe from the season. i look at the lights on the houses coming home from work, i peek at the windows as we drive by to see the sparkling trees, i find myself craving the treats i always used to have at this time of the year...
i suppose i've written about this before, but when i was a kid, one of the things i liked best to do was sit alone in front of the lit tree. there was magic there, a silent magic like the sound of snow.
later, i'd go outside on solstice night, in the snow or bare cold, and taste the magic that way. i remember one year it was so cold, i could hear the grass freeze with a soft crackling sound.
there's always been the sense that the depth of winter is a special time, no matter how i celebrated it. i'm glad i'm beginning to feel that again.
i hope it is for you, too.
good night, mayo. sweet dreams.
Now, Adam Lambert, that's a great album. Seriously, he's so original and funky and awesome. He's going to be a star a long time, just wait and see. And that Jonas brother that has struck out on his own. Talented for sure.
Anonymous said...
I agree that Gerard is only dissing American Idol because Eliza is on it. Sour grapes for sure. Maybe he's jut not over her.
Anonymous said...
I'll tell you what's hypocritical. Someone who comes here and posts a negative review about a band and then proceeds to talk about how bad their CD is (based on the review, obviously, because the CD isn't out yet) and then, when someone else points out that said CD has been getting generally positive reviews they respond that reviews don't mean anything.
Hypocritical, illogical and stupid.
I don't even like 30STM, but I can spot an idiotic troll when I see one. I'm glad nobody took the bait.
Anonymous said...
Mya was the one who always had a problem with 30 because she felt that certain people here turned against MCR (even though she wasn't happy with them either) but kept n liking 30. It was the mentality of a 14 year old to get mad because someone liked a band you hated. Or maybe it wasn't 30's fault, maybe she hated 30 because the people she hated LIKED them.
Anyway that was Mya so I figured last night's anti-30 was Mya too.
Anonymous said...
Anyway I don't know about the whole album bu t I do like Kings and Queens.
Anonymous said...
I wonder if Mya was the person who kept emailing the KOL anon? I always thought that was totally insane. It's not like the KOL anons ever compared them unfavorably to MCR.
I haven't really liked KOL since Aha Shake Heartbreak, but I thought the KOL anons were kind of fun. I never understood the hostility toward them.
Anonymous said...
*or rather, compared MCR unfavorably to them.
Anonymous said...
Mya has her share of disrespect for MCR too. I don't think she's driven by dislike of a certain band. More like who likes them that she hates.
Anonymous said...
Well I don't doubt that it's her because she not only admitted to anoning Kapu with the "unemployment like" and being that particular emailing anon that time, but she recently got caught and later admitted anoning at VV's. I don't personally like VV's because I do like MCR but I think if you don't like it ten just don't go there.
I don't doubt it's Mya but the question is why. Does she really hate 30 or is she just trying to goad the people she hates, who like them?
I think she's trying to goad. There's no question that she is a sick puppy. I heard she has a child and that thought makes me shudder. What mother acts like that?
Anonymous said...
People used to post a lot about KOL at VV's, comparing them to MCR. Since Mya has made it clear she hates VV, maybe she hates them too.
Also, I don't understand why that anon last night picked on BC the way she did unless it's because BC frequents VV's too.
Anonymous said...
Hi Jenn.
11:32 we're going to have to agree to disagree about BC. I head desk sometimes when she posts too.
I also disagree in a polite way with the anon last night who said it takes intelligence to be kind. No it doesn't. It takes intelligence to be intelligent.
BC gets labeled as a victim sometimes but I have seen her say her share of nasty stuff too.
I don't mind people saying nasty stuff because it happens and honestly I would prefer a person who is a little nasty and smart, to a person who is a little nasty and thick.
... "The robes of hope and promise," wept the Poplar, as he spoke, for all his branches trembled with delight, and stars seemed dropping all around.
"I mourn my dark despair," bewailed the Elm. "I should have called the past to memory! We never are deserted in our need. The winter tempests rage, and terrible they are; but always the bright moon from time to time returns, to shed down rays of hope and promises of glory on our heads; and still we doubt and fear, and still the patient moon repeats her tale. And then the spring and summer time return, and life, and joy, and all our beauteous robes. Oh, what weak tremblers we must be!"
And so, through all the rest of that strange night, murmurs of comfort sounded through the wood, and I returned at last to the poor lonely cottage that I called my home, and wept mixed tears of sorrow and of joy. Father and mother lost, swept suddenly away, and I, with straitened means, left alone to struggle through the world! Did I not stand before my desolate hearth, like one awakened from a dream, a vision–(surely such it was!)–exclaiming in despair, as did the weeping Beech, "Naked and forlorn I stand amid the ruins of the past." But through the casement glided in on me, me also, as I stood, the blessed rays of that eternal moon–the moon that shone in Paradise–the moon that promises a Paradise restored.
And ever and anon, throughout the struggle of my life, I would return for wisdom and for hope to the old forest where I dreamt the dream. As time passed on, and winter snows came down, a cold, unmeaning sleep seemed to bind up the trees–but still, at her appointed time, the moon came out, and lit up even snow with robes of light and hope. And then the spring-time burst the cruel bonds that held all nature in a stagnant state. Verdure and beauty came again; and, as I listened to the gales that breathed soft music through the trees, I thought, "If I could dream again, I should hear songs of exquisite delight." But that was not to be. Still, I could revel in the comfort of the sight, and watch the moonbeams glittering in triumphant joy through the now verdant bowers of those woods, playing in happy sport amid the shadows of the leaves.
-from The Moon that shown in paradise
That is a great source of inspiration & it does explain this cd.
Honor the legal contract you tried to walk away from, make the damn cd and put it out under our label or pay us 30 million.
aw, i want snow, too! *pouts*
fooey.
anyway, hello all!
miss t., glad your dreams were pleasant and purple-free!
ergo, loved that version of the holiday song *hee*
anon at 4:29, what a lovely passage. thank you for sharing it. the line And then the spring-time burst the cruel bonds that held all nature in a stagnant state. reminded me of the spring equinox ritual of a coven i used to celebrate the holidays with: as a group, we would hold a paperchain and at the climactic moment, rip it apart, setting ourselves free from winter.
very effective (even when you're someone who doesn't mind the bonds of winter all that much *grin*)
Hey TJ
Sending you some snow right now.
Yep I'm still here but getting ready to head down to put wood in the fire.
ergoproxy said...
Hi TJ!!
I just watched Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall, a brit chef doing a medieval xmas feast, he did the 10 bird roast and heaps of yummy stuff and they ate from trencher bread, they all dressed up
I was thinking of you
toujours said...
i will gladly accept that snow!
*makes space in her closet for snow*
toujours said...
hey ergo!
aw, trencher bread, too? neat. :)
ergoproxy said...
the feast looked very scrummy, we never really have anything like that, it's too hot for roast everythings. Though you may choose to have full roast dinner, it's so bloody hot the best xmas meals tend to be salads, cold meats, just roast chicken, seafood. For a few years as a teen we'd go down to a chinese restaurant that put on a special banquet for xmas, that was really yummy.
Rest in peace Willie Maxine Perry
there's lots of other ways to serve meat in a medieval fashion, though the big chunk of something roasting on a spit is what most people think of. still, i bet it was fun viewing!
ergoproxy said...
that's what looks best, I love the idea of just chopping chunks of things and eating it with lots of bread at a huge long table. lol
anon I don't know of him, apart from a quick google just then, I'm sure he'll miss her
Tyler Perry is an amazingly talented man. His mother was the inspiration for his Madea character.
Tyler Perry
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tyler Perry (born September 14, 1969) is an American actor, director, screenwriter, producer, and author.[1] As of July 2009[update], Tyler Perry's films have grossed nearly $400 million worldwide, not including his plays.[2]
Tyler Perry was born Emmitt R. Perry, Jr. in New Orleans, Louisiana (he now lives in Atlanta, Georgia).[3] His father, Emmitt, Sr., was a carpenter and construction worker, and his mother, Willie Maxine (1945-2009), was a pre-school teacher who worked at the New Orleans Jewish Community Center.[4][5][6] The younger Perry changed his first name to Tyler because of his troubled relationship with his father. Tyler Perry has said that his father was physically and verbally abusive to him during his childhood, and that this contributed to his attempting suicide as a teenager.[7][8] A 2004 New York Times article referred to Perry's relationship with his father as "now mended".[7] However, in a 2009 interview, Perry expressed disdain for his father and spoke in the present tense of his father being abusive to his mother.[9]
Perry dropped out of school when he was 16, but later went back to obtain his GED. He is good friends with Oprah Winfrey, rapper/actor Will Smith and Bishop T.D. Jakes.[10] In 2008 Perry earned around $75 million, placing him just outside the top five highest paid men in Hollywood.[11] Perry is known to be a devout Christian.[12]
...Madea Goes to Jail opened #1 on February 20, 2009, grossing $41 million and becoming his largest opening to date. This was Perry's seventh film with Lionsgate Entertainment. At the request of director J. J. Abrams,[19] Perry had a cameo appearance in the movie Star Trek, which opened on May 8, 2009. This was his first movie appearance outside of his own projects. Perry next wrote, directed, and starred in I Can Do Bad All By Myself, a film structured around his Madea character.[20] Perry also teamed with Oprah Winfrey to present Precious, a movie based on the novel Push by Sapphire.[21]
Books
Perry's first novel, Don't Make a Black Woman Take Off Her Earrings: Madea's Uninhibited Commentaries on Love and Life, appeared on April 11, 2006. The book sold more than 25,000 copies.[23] The hardcover reached #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list and stayed on the list for 12 weeks. It was voted the "Book of the Year" and "Best Humor Book" at the 2006 Quill Awards.
feasts are fun. :)
but there's a lot of table manners that go along with sharing trenchers and so forth, you always toast the king first (whether he's present or not) and the baron second, you never use your dagger to pick your teeth (or clean your nails), and you only throw bones over your shoulder if you have a lot of dogs waiting for scraps. otherwise...
it's a no-no. :)
lol I shall remember in case I ever feast medievally
have you seen teh cuisine, I think it's south American somewhere, they wander about and serve everything on swords (or huge skewers) and either slice of pull it off for you at the table
I really would love to do that
toujours said...
lol i haven't seen that! i would think that involves a great deal of trust in your server...
from quick bit of google-fu, I think it may be a Brazilian thing
