At the Home

I hate to see you
When you're falling apart
Can't you start over, again?

Elizabeth crumbles
Alone in her chair
Keeps her windows shut
To keep out the air

Elizabeth crumbles
Alone in her bed
Spends all her pastime
Mulled in her dread

What keeps her living
Is her fear of being
Anywhere other than here
So they’ll feed her too much
Or it’s never enough,
Then it's fuck you
“Get the hell out of here!"

Elizabeth stumbles
Over everything I've said
Pining words are useless
Pushed round in her head

The mystery was my bravery
I never knew what I'd get
Will it be her fear or regret?
Her confusion my denial?
Walked her shoes a while
Now she can’t turn back
So she said then she’ll stay
And I will walk away

Elizabeth mumbles
Over and over my name
Forgetting tomorrow
Will never be the same

She’s repeating her beating
Did you bring her a drink?
Why are you leaving?
What the hell do you think?
That she’ll fuck you
To get the hell out of here

Elizabeth tumbles
Out onto the floor
With an abandon of reason
It is herself abhorred

She sat alone in her room
Pouring over her gloom
Never got out of her chair
And they don't even care
Now that they’ve all receded
Into the ground or fleeted
To the wormholes
And woodwork back there

You'll find repair
Where that memory
Becomes illusory

Look, again?

p.s. in the end it is what you think you will get.

Thanks 5:03, I didn't think so.

And Nope 5:10. In the real world, I'm a big fat cock. (Watch out, I squirt.) However, I talk out my ass. But thanks for the thought. ;p

And yea, 5:25 -you are right. But if you think I was being self-righteous, then you have no idea of me or what I think of myself. You misunderstand me completely. And your middle point:

Nobody wants to look in the mirror and say "hey, maybe I'm part of the problem".

Was exactly a point I was trying to make myself. But it is late, and I only came back to make sure my comment went through. I'm sorry you don't get me anon, or think I was being rude in some way. That isn't what I was trying to say.

Hi FASC!!

Hi Ergo - You've successfully navigated the trials of the school year! Congratulations! You deserve a break, though having a young family, a break is relative. Oops... silly pun!

LEWIS!!!! I agree with what you wrote - some things are unbelievable! And I think I got g'nite and g'morning mixed up. Didn't know there was another. Thank you for the confidence in my character. *hug* Anyone would be lucky to know you better as well!!

To repair my earlier comment -

G'morning - I enjoyed the Sylvia Plath anyway, and I thank you.

G'nite - I repeat what I said about 'On Good and Evil' I very much enjoyed it. That theme always gives one to wonder, as old as it may be.

Eurovision Song Contest weekend!!!!
Do you watch it? Oh I love it, always good entertainment, though sometimes you do wonder exactly what were they thinking. I've been watching the semi-finals and tonight the Czech Republic was just.....well I think you'd have to have seen it, but it involved a guy in a red jumpsuit with a superhero cape, a girl in stripy tights, fluffy skirt and a violin.....and ...well....I think that's enough...and it was called Super Gypsy, can't beat a good novelty song.
Finland had flame jugglers, Sweden a woman with an amazing voice doing a pop/opera mix, Belaruse, Malta, Switzerland, Bosnia Herzegovinam Andorra (very catchy song) Israel (very good song)..and the others...but out of the 18 countries which 10 will be voted into the final????
Can the hosts "banter" get any worse???? Will they show the rather dishy Dimitri in the green room again????
These questions and more will be answered shortly, voting has stopped...I'll let you know. At the moment it is a big Russian musical number (they are hosts) with army choir, drums, cheerleaders, dancers and a giant pink inflatable tank. OH MY they have TATU singing!!!! Wow they look a bit older.
Go on Mayo watch it over the weekend, you know you want to
much love EP xx

*how do you spell that word?!*

Speaking of losing things...
eight years ago I put down a plate containing half of an uneaten sandwhich.

It is still missing.

Two years ago it was joined by a half full cup of tea.

They weren't with my purse, that was lost in the freezer for four days.

I did think I had lost my incense sticks.

Turns out everyone had decided to lose them for me.

And bugger it all, I missed my Greenday courier delivery and now I have to wait until Monday to fondle it. >_<

Mustard would know all about that hands on feeling. =)

Happy Friday all. =)

ergoproxy said...

you see they are playing the final live, but that is during the day for us, so the semis are at night, hence the delay, but I never look it up early so I get to enjoy the suspense

ergoproxy said...

don't you get Eurovision telecast Miranth? missing out!! It launched Abba, Bucks Fizz and numerous acts that went nowhere afterwards. it is actually pretty cool to watch, they all compete with songs and they choose 20 countries to compete in the final (out of 36 European countries)

so do you ever see Eurovision? If you don't you should, just for the really lame host banter, it's great. And for some reason it always seems sort of daggy, but in a comforting way. Hope you get a chance, but if not read my outline to Mayo and I'll report the 2nd demi final tomorrow night
it's fun :]
Have a great friday

Morast: Green Day stuck in the past, and I’m not buying it
After being rocked by the
time-jumping season finale of “Lost” it’s easy to suspect everything suspicious has elements of time travel.

By: Robert Morast, INFORUM

After being rocked by the time-jumping season finale of “Lost” it’s easy to suspect everything suspicious has elements of time travel.

For instance, why does it seem like the dysfunctional mind-warped Britney Spears from 2005 has recently replaced the current model that felt almost mature?

And why does pop slut Lady GaGa’s wardrobe look like it came from the final days of disco haven Studio 54? Time travel. Has to be.

Another musical act doing the time warp is Green Day, which suddenly feels stuck in 2004 or 2005.

Granted, that was a pretty good time for the punkers-made-good. The group’s record “American Idiot” was a critical and financial success courtesy its rock opera addressing the animosity toward the then Bush White House regime. For that moment, it was exactly what so many people needed to hear and feel.

Sadly, Green Day’s dipping into the same well for its latest disc, “21st Century Breakdown,” and the result plays like a bad bit of déjà-vu.

Released today, the record is another rock opera focused on a hot-button issue of the times. This time, the guitar arias trace the ideas of coping in a world recovering from threats of terrorism and global war.

Not a bad topic, but it’s smeared by heavy-handed slaps at evangelicism and the Christian Right. Those are topics Green Day’s fans probably will lap up like thirsty dogs; but it’s an issue that isn’t as flameworthy as it was a few years ago. These days, the threat of religious extremism has been downgraded by survival in a depressed economy. The transcendence has evaporated.

But there’s more.

Also on this trip to the past is the cast of Green Day’s supporting acts, which reads like an iPod playlist from 2005.

The first leg – including the July 10 date at the Fargodome – features The Bravery, a band that was soooo stylish in 2005 with its terrific new-wavey hit “An Honest Mistake.” The second leg welcomes the Kaiser Chiefs, a British rock band that hasn’t been fashionable since 2005. And the third leg carries Franz Ferdinand, a Scottish rock act that reached the apex of its cultural appeal in 2005.

Then there’s the cover art for “21st Century Breakdown.” The image of a graffiti-esque kissing couple looks suspiciously similar to the graffiti-esque couple about to kiss on the cover of My Chemical Romance’s 2004 record “Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge.”

Yawn. Nostalgia’s cool, but those years weren’t exactly the best of times.

Whether you miss the recent past or not, Green Day’s time-dated record is disappointing because the band felt like it had matured into one of those rare bands able to deftly summarize and vent the frustrations of today in short, snappy rock songs.

Sadly, the group’s latest record and upcoming tour suggest it’s a nostalgia-act-in-training.

It’s not a bad gambit considering many of the people buying tickets to Green Day’s Fargo concert are probably still stuck in 2005.

Me, I’m searching for a time machine to take me to 2013. By that time the cultural world should be singing about right now.

Taking Back Sunday - New Again
Tim Karan on 5/14/09 @ 3:48 PM

[4.5/5]
Taking Back Sunday are a strange beast. Since the 2006 release of Louder Now, guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Fred Mascherino left the band, and vocalist Adam Lazzara's engagement to Eisley's Chauntelle DuPree was abruptly called off, among other turbulent life events. Of course, in typical TBS fashion, these issues won't be addressed in the press. But just like the best parts of the Bible are when God gets all vengeful on people's asses, Taking Back Sunday albums shine most when frontman Adam Lazzara doesn't hold back lyrically, and because of his willingness to open up--no matter how crypticly--on many of these songs, New Again leaps forward as the best album of Taking Back Sunday's career to date.

Lazzara's tongue lashings start with "Summer, Man," which was likely written about Mascherino. The song's thick, chunky riff drives the midtempo rocker through myriad indictments backed by Beach Boys-esque vocal "ooh"s (sample lyrics: "So go prove to the world what you already proved/That you just couldn't do it on your own/Let's have a talk about the good times/About how you were 'always giving in'").

Album closer "Everything Must Go" is most definitely directed toward Lazzara's ex-fiancee DuPree, with its verses telling the story of moving in together and a chorus of, "You'd quote the good book/When it's convenient/But you don't have the sense/To tie your tangled tongue" wailed by Lazzara over one of TBS' patented half-time breakdowns and some truly epic guitar spiraling. (Side note: Does any band do half-time breakdowns better than Taking Back Sunday? Is it even possible?)

Even though Lazzara's obviously taking some shots at his various ex-partners, he's not afraid to turn the barrel of the gun on himself, either: "Where My Mouth Is," an airy ballad that's sure to become a single, is about his rumored drug use ("I put my money where my mouth was/Until I couldn't breath through my nose")-and is possibly an apology toJohn Nolan and Shaun Cooper, who acrimoniously departed TBS in 2003 over circumstances still left largely undiscussed ("And now I'm staring at the floor/Where my second life just ended/Where I lost not one, but two friends"). The song's chorus, "See, I had it all/But I threw it away/Just to prove that I could," is sung sweetly, belying Lazzara's admission that he essentially let the original incarnation of TBS self-destruct.

Much of New Again's music has a darker, more menacing vibe, and as such, sacrifices some of Louder Now's highest pop peaks ("Liar (It Takes One To Know One)," "My Blue Heaven") for an intensity the band have never had before. "Catholic Knees" features a bridge straight out of a Glassjaw song; "Lonely, Lonely" sounds like something leftover from Brand New's The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me; the bouncy "Sink Into Me" never loses its magic even after dozens of listens; and the brilliant "Carpathia" is so well-written, it's amazing to think four-fifths of this lineup wrote something as mundane as "Miami" just a few years back.

The only pockmark on this otherwise stellar album is "Capital M-E," which should've been relegated to B-side status. Of course, that's the one song that spells out Lazzara's M.O. in plain English: "The nicest man I ever met/Was more malicious than malcontent/He taught me how to hold my tongue/And wait to strike until their backs were turned." So to all future victims of the singer's vitriol: You've been warned. (WARNER BROS.) Scott Heisel

Talk

You're a brave man they tell me.
I'm not.
Courage has never been my quality.
Only I thought it disproportionate
so to degrade myself as others did.
No foundations trembled. My voice
no more than laughed at pompous falsity;
I did no more than write, never denounced,
I left out nothing I had thought about,
defended who deserved it, put a brand
on the untalented, the ersatz writers
(doing what anyhow had to be done).
And now they press to tell me that I'm brave.
How sharply our children will be ashamed
taking at last their vengeance for these horrors
remembering how in so strange a time
common integrity could look like courage.

Hi everybody.

That's why i think some of these anons are regulars. Why would these anons care what happened in the past. It's regulars that got pissed off at certain people and they will not get over it.

sister midnite said...

2:47, maybe the anons *are* regs. I don't know. But -- call me naive -- I just want the shit to stop. The people the 'anon' posts are ragging about (Kapunua, MJ, Amyranth, Elena, and everyone else mentioned) get jumped on every time they post, with 'anons' feeling the need to choose sides and broadcast their opinions. Once, whatever. But over & over is getting really, *REALLY* tiring.

Yeah, yeah - I know everyone has the right to an opinion, and the right to express said opinion, etc., etc., etc. But honestly, how many times do we have to read the same old shit??

Anonymous said...

Oh, I'm convinced that they're regulars. They still want to pretend that this blog is somehow relevant.

In a Boat

See the stars, love,
In the water much clearer and brighter
Than those above us, and whiter,
Like nenuphars.

Star-shadows shine, love,
How many stars in your bowl?
How many shadows in your soul,
Only mine, love, mine?

When I move the oars, love,
See how the stars are tossed,
Distorted, the brightest lost.
—So that bright one of yours, love.

The poor waters spill
The stars, waters broken, forsaken.
—The heavens are not shaken, you say, love,
Its stars stand still.

There, did you see
That spark fly up at us; even
Stars are not safe in heaven.
—What of yours, then, love, yours?

What then, love, if soon
Your light be tossed over a wave?
Will you count the darkness a grave,
And swoon, love, swoon?

I'm sailing away, set an open course for the virgin sea
I've got to be free, free to face the life thats ahead of me
On board, I'm the captain, so climb aboard
We'll search for tomorrow on every shore
And I'll try, oh lord, I'll try to carry on

I look to the sea, reflections in the waves spark my memory
Some happy, some sad
I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had
We live happily forever, so the story goes
But somehow we missed out on that pot of gold
But we'll try best that we can to carry on

A gathering of angels appeared above my head
They sang to me this song of hope, and this is what they said
They said come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me

I thought that they were angels, but to my surprise
They climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies
Singing come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me

when I worked in the habedashery dept, I was in the sewing machine area, as I was casual I worked late night friday and saturday mornings (we don't have 7 day or 24 hr trading) and seeing as it wasn't a hugely popular sewing machine purchasing time, I used to sit and make outfits for wooden clothes pegs, I made bride and grooms and beach gear, all to demo the stitches and embroidery, the other lady used to do her quilting

toujours said...

that's a neat idea, ergo! m boss told me i could bring projects to work on if i like, but we're still in the pricess of putting the store back together after the quilt show in april.

the squares i was folding today were quarter yards of fabric, i was making bundles of twenty coordinating fabrics. the quilters love those...it's like fabric candy to them lol. we make them up in different themes -- red, white & blue for patriotic holidays, blue & yellow (always a popular combination for quilts), special collections or favorite designers.

there are bolts of fabric that never sell off the bolt, but if you make up a fat quarter bundle, they will sell out in days! today i was putting together bundles made from our reproduction fabrics -- printed cottons in patterns from the 1800's. they're so pretty, it was fun to figure out a good combination of twenty to cut & fold.

normally, i enjoy it. it's calming and peaceful, but today i was just itchy to be done with the day.

Mayo

Tonight I share a poem with you that is one of my favorites. It popped into my head today, like the memory of a lost friend.

Forgotten Language by Shel Silverstein

Once I spoke the language of the flowers,
Once I understood each word the caterpillar said,
Once I smiled in secret at the gossip of the starlings,
And shared a conversation with the housefly
in my bed.
Once I heard and answered all the questions
of the crickets,
And joined the crying of each falling dying
flake of snow,
Once I spoke the language of the flowers. . . .
How did it go?
How did it go?

_________

Mayo, never forget to speak the language of your past. New words and ideas will come and claim a place but that sweet, innocent language of the past....listen and remember.

Night Mayo

well, i do get to choose the radio station. our quilting ladies are now acquainted with pink, seether, nickelback, soulja boy, et al. *heh*

maybe it's not really work that has me feeling a little raspy under the skin tonight. it's my birthday soon, actually on memorial day this year (and that's a whole other bit of strangeness, since it was always my dad's birthday that was on memorial day. it's like i inherited the holiday. weird.)

haven't figured out what to do, and i wanted to do something. you know how it is? some years your birthday can pass by and it's no big deal, other years you want to mark it with a bit of something special.

well, all my tentative plans fell through, or died in the research stages.

i know, i know, it's just a day, an arbitrary threshold we create for ourselves. no big deal. i'll get over it, right? but i have to confess, the thought of having no plans for the day is making me feel a little bit like a kid who is going to miss out on halloween.

maybe when no one is looking tomorrow, i'll stamp my feet.

good night, mayo. hope your saturday is wholly unthwarted, in every way.

A Magic Moment I Remember

A magic moment I remember:
I raised my eyes and you were there.
A fleeting vision, the quintessence
Of all that's beautiful and rare.

I pray to mute despair and anguish
To vain pursuits the world esteems,
Long did I near your soothing accents,
Long did your features haunt my dreams.

Time passed- A rebel storm-blast scattered
The reveries that once were mine
And I forgot your soothing accents,
Your features gracefully divine.

In dark days of enforced retirement
I gazed upon grey skies above
With no ideals to inspire me,
No one to cry for, live for, love.

Then came a moment of renaissance,
I looked up- you again are there,
A fleeting vision, the quintessence
Of all that`s beautiful and rare.

Thanks for the GD review, 9:06am!
American Idiot was always going to be a hard act to follow, even with their Foxboro Hot Tubs release in between.
Allowing for my not hearing the new album yet, the reviewer seems to be ignoring the fact that a significant proportion of music and fashion is derivative of times past.
And if a band can't pull out something that does sound like themselves then that's an odd criticism.
I'm still looking forward to listening to the album and discovering what is on there. Not every song is always going to be a hit, but it's always good to find one or two. Hopefully. =)

And that's a great review for TBS.

Hey everyone

It’s finally not raining or storming here but damn it’s cold. This morning at 3 am it was about 40 degrees. Compared to yesterday when it was 85 that’s pretty cold. Anyway I’m off to a comic convention in Lawrence. Good times! Hope everyone has a great day.

Mayo have a great day – Yep, that’s an order.
You too, SS.

Take care

"Wanted to say - Mean Anons - Leave SisM alone. Go back to VVs please."

Miranth, what is your problem with VV's? Why would you take it out on the people there?

That's judgmental and VERY rude. For someone who is always tooting her own horn about being so kind and fair, that was a really lousy thing for you to say.

Especially when the "mean anons" are people from HERE.

miranth said...

Cause we need more cuteness...

Guinea Pigs!!!

I'll remove it then anon, I thought they were from there - given the irrelevant comment.

Sorry.

As I said, I was...

Still waking up...

And sorry, I thought they were from there.

But, I do reiterate - Mean Anons - Leave SisM alone.

You guys have better shit to bitch about.

ERGO - I will try to find Eurovision on Youtube!

Wendy - I loved when LORDI won too! I recall they were the underdogs. It was pretty cool. My Mom is pretty well and I missed my niece's play. She had said it was last Friday so I cleared time for it, but it was this Friday and I couldn't get the time off. I am sure there will be other opportunities though. She is coming over today and I will take them to the custard place. Hopefully it won't rain too much so we can hit the playground.

Does anyone else my age still swing on swings or am I the only odd one? :D

Hey, are people meeting somewhere else? It seems this place accrues much fewer comments these days - and I still can't keep up!

I suck!

Boating anon - I miss boating and the parties in the sun. I will let you know how they are this year. Much fun! Though I always end up taking care of the skinny girls who get too drunk. In the heat, alcohol can be physically devastating. No joke.

Have a good one guys!

Mayo - Where are you? I hope wherever you are, you are having fun. Don't forget, okay?

:)

Anonymous said...

No leave it up. You're as judgmental as the next.

People at Vv's are nice. They do not attack each other.

And apparently Kap's stalker is a regular from HERE.

And people at VV's are the nasty anons?

I wonder .... where did you come up with that? That "fact" you thought up had to come from somewhere.

I go to VV's a lot. You know why? Because people there are funny, and actually nice.

miranth said...

And no, I don't toot my own horn about being kind and fair.

I am human just like everyone else here, including you.

I make mistakes, that's for certain and I try to correct them - that's why I removed the comment. I made a mistake. I misinterpreted the interchange and I am sorry. Truly.

That makes me human. And I am most certainly not infallible! And that's an understatement..

:)

Anonymous said...

What made you think that anyway? Why did you just jump all over the VV people and accuse them like that? Personally I like SM. I don't think most of us over there even have a problem with her. Or with ANYone.

It seems like you people are the ones' who have a problem with us instead.

miranth said...

I am glad you have positive experiences there.

May they continue and your friendships grow.

miranth said...

I already explained, I thought when they said this place was irrelevant, I attributed that sentiment incorrectly.

Anyway, I made a mistake, I apologized, that's all I can do.

Sorry.

:(

Anonymous said...

So .... what or who made you think that anyone from VV's was starting trouble here in the first place?

Anonymous said...

I see an anon said that to SM yesterday but why did you ASSume that it was from VV's?

If it was (I don't know who it was) then whey did you ASSume that other mean anons were from there?

Especially when you know that the worst anons are people from HERE.

miranth said...

I was tired anon - and sometimes, rather often! - I misinterpret things here.

I thought that peopel at VVs didn't like us, and the places were being compared.

I am glad you like SisM, though, she's cool. :)

Anonymous said...

You're right about one thing.... Sometimes the places DO get compared.

And I never have seen anything at VV's as disgusting as the acts i have seen over here.

Have you?

miranth said...

And yes, anon, I said, long, long, long ago that some of the anons here are regs in blue.

I once told someone something in confidence and it popped up here, so I know very well.

I am over it though. Its ok.

miranth said...

I only read at VVs once, so I am not qualified to judge.

Like you said, sometimes the places do get compared and that's what I thought. My mistake.

Anonymous said...

Well I just though it was weird how you coul dwitness the truely disgusting words that get said over here all the time and the disgusting actions that get played out by the people from here, and then say "go back to VV's.

I think I will because it is actually alot nicer and safer from crazies over there.

miranth said...

You're entitled to your opinion.

Well, HELLO!

I don't even know why I decided to stop by and check this shit out, but I did!

I saw the discussion about anons vs. regulars and I must agree, I have thought, from Day 1, that most of the anons were regulars!

But, dears... I have not been among them, no matter what you may think!

OK, time to talk about ME! I've been busy... I haven't been so down and depressed lately and that's always a good thing... Loving the warmer weather! Looking forward to going to the lake, catching some rays, and (hopefully!) catching some fish!

Today, I helped my daughter get ready for her very first Prom! She looks gorgeous! And I'm feeling that sadness of realizing that my baby is growing up!

I've bragged here before about my daughter, but seriously... How the hell did my daughter turn out to be such a wonder person?! She is so strong, so independent, and so GENUINE... And all that at the tender young age of 17! I was never that confident!

She took the ACT exam a few weeks ago and even though she scored above average, she is not satisfied! She is determined to take it again and receive the scores she feels are acceptable.

Life is good... When I discovered that I was pregnant with her (and unmarried) I knew and acknowledged that she was God's. I gave her life to Him. I have just been the care-taker, the "custodian". She is living a Christian life, one that she discovered and adopted, for herself!

What a blessing it has been to have her my life! I have always called her my "life saver", because without her, even unexpected and as unplanned as she was, there is no telling where I would've ended up! She put focus back into my life.

That's why I hope GW's new "bundle of joy" will do the same for him. It does truly change everything in your life.

I hope all you "Lovelies" are doing well! I think of you often and love you all!

Take Care!

In case anyone is interested, KROQ is streaming the KROQ Wienie Roast live on their website tonight. Link

Incidentally, KOL will also be performing at The MTV Movie Awards along with Eminem the end of this month. They're everywhere these days, or so it seems.

the bed bugs r biting said...

By Barbara Barrett, McClatchy Newspapers Barbara Barrett, Mcclatchy Newspapers – Fri May 15, 5:50 pm ET

WASHINGTON — The biggest bedbug outbreak since World War II has sent a collective shudder among apartment dwellers, college students and business travelers across the nation.

The bugs — reddish brown, flat and about the size of a grain of rice — suck human blood. They resist many pesticides and spread quickly in certain mattress-heavy buildings, such as hotels, dormitories and apartment complexes.

Two shelters have closed temporarily in Charlotte, N.C. , because of bedbugs, a Yahoo chat group dedicates itself to sufferers and countless bedbug blogs provide forums for news, tips and commiseration. State inspectors say that more emphasis may be needed to tackle the creatures.

Federal officials have taken notice of the resurgence. Last month, the Environmental Protection Agency held its first-ever bedbug summit, and now a North Carolina congressman wants to take on the insect.

Democratic Rep. G.K. Butterfield just introduced legislation that would authorize $50 million that's already in the Department of Commerce budget to train health inspectors how to recognize signs of the insects.

The Don't Let the Bed Bugs Bite Act of 2009 also would require public housing agencies to submit bedbug inspection plans to the federal government. It would add bedbugs to a rodent and cockroach program in the Department of Health and Human Services . It also would require the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to research bedbugs' impact on public mental health.

Butterfield's letter to congressional colleagues about the legislation attracted lots of attention: It was topped with a full-color picture of the insect sitting on human skin.

"Unfortunately, in recent years, the United States has seen a resurgence in bedbugs," the letter reads. "That's right — they're back in the sack — and biting."

Bedbugs have hit hotels and homes in every state. The creatures are amazing hitchhikers, experts say, and easily travel in suitcases, boxes or packages. They can live for up to a year without food.

Apparently no state has a central reporting system for bedbugs, according to Butterfield's office, and since the bug carries no known diseases, many health departments don't consider it a public health threat.

That leaves the critters falling through the cracks among regulators, said Michael Potter , an entomologist at the University of Kentucky and one of the country's bedbug experts.

"Most health departments say, 'Hey, we don't deal with bedbugs,' " Potter said.

Those who've suffered outbreaks say that the anxiety it induces can be debilitating. Potter said many sufferers tossed out furniture and could spend thousands of dollars on repeated treatments from pesticide companies. They call him about anxiety, insomnia, shame and the incessant annoyance of itchy red welts on their skin.

"They're, like, ready to blow their brains out," Potter said. "It's emotionally distressing. Anyone that has never had a bedbug problem is not one to judge whether we're dealing with a medical, emotional public health issue."

In Congress , Butterfield first introduced his bill a year ago after hearing from a constituent who'd brought bedbugs into her home from a hotel trip. The bill died in committee last year, but Butterfield aides say they hope that higher attention will help the measure this year.

The co-sponsors include Reps. Don Young , R- Alaska , Ben Chandler , D- Ky. , Bobby L. Rush , D- Ill. , Betty McCollum , D- Minn. , Corrine Brown , D- Fla. , Steve Cohen , D- Tenn. , Brad Miller , D- N.C. , and Eddie Bernice Johnson , D- Texas .

Butterfield also has received support from the National Pest Management Association , which says that bedbug calls to pest control companies are up 70 percent in the past five years.

Greg Baumann , a Raleigh, N.C. , pest control expert and the vice president of technical services for the National Pest Management Association , said that a decade ago few pest control companies dealt routinely with bedbugs.

"Now it's everyone today," he said.

Baumann said companies could use pesticides on the bugs but that they also tried such alternatives as extreme heat, freezing and isolating the insects through mattress covers.

Since the EPA restricted the use of several effective pesticides in the 1980s, bedbugs have built resistance to the chemicals that now are on the market, said Potter, the University of Kentucky entomologist. Public education is important, he said, but the industry also needs a good insecticide.

"Whether that bill is going to solve the problem — certainly it's a start," he said.

Zombie fire ants wander in Texas — until heads fall off

By Bill Hanna | Fort Worth Star-Telegram

It sounds like something out of science fiction: zombie fire ants. But it's all too real.

Fire ants wander aimlessly away from the mound.

Eventually their heads fall off, and they die.

The strange part is that researchers at the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M’s AgriLife Extension Service say making "zombies" out of fire ants is a good thing.

"It's a tool – they're not going to completely wipe out the fire ant, but it's a way to control their population," said Scott Ludwig, an integrated pest management specialist with the AgriLife Extension Service in Overton, in East Texas.

The tool is the tiny phorid fly, native to a region of South America where the fire ants in Texas originated. Researchers have learned that there are as many as 23 phorid species along with pathogens that attack fire ants to keep their population and movements under control.

So far, four phorid species have been introduced in Texas.

The flies "dive-bomb" the fire ants and lay eggs. The maggot that hatches inside the ant eats away at the brain, and the ant starts exhibiting what some might say is zombie-like behavior.

"At some point, the ant gets up and starts wandering," said Rob Plowes, a research associate at UT.

The maggot eventually migrates into the ant's head, but Plowes said he "wouldn't use the word 'control' to describe what is happening. There is no brain left in the ant, and the ant just starts wandering aimlessly. This wandering stage goes on for about two weeks."

About a month after the egg is laid, the ant's head falls off and the fly emerges ready to attack any foraging ants away from the mound and lay eggs.

mayo,

lately i have been "enjoying" a refresher course in going forward.

i was a little mouse for a long time, without even realizing that i was, and now that i have this second chance at living my life, i've been very grateful that i've left the mouse behind.

except, she's still there, inside my head. when faced with a new situation, she can sneak out and cause me to overthink it, until there's so much static going on i don't know what it is i want.

she's the reason i've been struggling a bit lately. i want to be someone who lives bravely, who steps forward regardless the uncertainty of the path, and just when i think i am that person, whammo!

mouse.

dither dither dither.

and i didn't even realize that's what was going on this time, not until the last day or so. talking with my sister, i started to notice the inconsistencies in my reasoning, started to realize that i was getting in the way of my own wishes.

i feel stronger, now that i've finally identified the source of the wibbling. i'm still nervous, of course, but now that the mouse is shut up (or ignored), i know what i want, and i can go forward with my full self. i had to figure out how to stop thinking, of all things, i had to learn how to trust my heart over the circling thoughts in my head.

i know there will be times when reasoning something out is necessary, and then i'll spend as much time in cognition as the problem requires, but in this instance, it is definitely not invited.

i feel like i just earned a merit badge! *grin*

good night, mayo. never stop trying to figure yourself out, who knows what might be crammed up in that head of yours. could be interesting!
