I recently received a text message from a very good friend:
“You watch grinch? What the fuck are they singing?”
I replied:
“Been a while: Ah-boo-doe-ray, Ah-boo-doe-ray. Or something like that. But what I really wanna know is why santa is such a dick to rudolph.”
This was my friends reply:
“Donner a dick too.”
And because I can’t let anything go without an overdone, unnecessary, crack-pot analysis, I replied again:
“Yeah, what up with that. Nice message to send kids…youre different and I dont like you, so fuck you until I need you to pull my sleigh. Then I like you. Santa almost push rudolph over the edge.”
My friend was probably thinking "Why did I even ask?"
But, yeah Santa is pretty much a dick to Rudolph. I believe he says something to the effect of "Pity, and he had potential, too.” And my friend was right, Donner was a dick. Desperate to prove himself a worthy sperm donor, he makes Rudolph cover up his depreciatory genetic mutation. Explaining to his son that there are more important things in life than comfort, like self-respect.
The message: If you don't fit in, you aren't worth shit. So suck it up until you either fit in or someone needs you for something.
And then everyone tries to take it back and pin the "reindeer of the year" award on Rudolph. Kids have to see through that.
(Clarice knew what was up, though. Right from the beginning she knew Rudolph was the shit.)
So, I say to Santa and the rest of the fuckers in this world...just because someone doesn’t fit your image of what “a something” should be you think that they are incapable? Not worthy? Without feelings?
"Just wait, and watch your back."

It is so cold here. No Mayo, do not say “How cold is it?” or I will weave a tapestry of obscenities that as far as we know will still be hanging in space over Lake Michigan this time next year. Okay, yeah I’ve been watching “A Christmas Story.” Love that movie. One year I actually made a leg lamp as a joke gift for my Dad. I was walking through a flea market and saw a pair of legs that were old display stock from a department store. The woman gave me such a strange look when I bought the pair of plastic legs but I knew I needed them. Well, I needed one of the legs. I ran lights through the leg. Then I put a very nice fish net stocking on it. Took another lamp apart to get the actual lamp “guts” and finished it off with a very gaudy lampshade. Oh the look on his face when he opened that gift was priceless. That movie was always a favorite for my family and he couldn’t believe I’d given him a leg lamp. My mom, while she thought it was funny, I knew was thinking in her mind “Oh God, tell me he’s not gonna put that in the window.” He did. Not for long but for a while there was “the soft glow of electric sex gleaming in the window.” You know I haven’t thought about that for years. That’s a nice memory. It made me smile.
So have you been watching any Christmas movies? No, not the animated ones. Let us not speak of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” I mean any Christmas movies with real people? Like “White Christmas” or “The Bishops Wife”. Oh I love that one. Cary Grant as the angel is heavenly. Or how about “It’s A Wonderful Life”? Yeah, it’s corny but damn it, I love the stupid thing. I know the other day I was really being pissy about the town coming to George’s aid but hey, maybe they would have. You gotta try to believe in the good, right? Oh, and I have an autographed book by Karolyn Grimes, you know Zuzu. Good Lord, do you know Zuzu is 68 years old? Funny to me she will always be little Zuzu who says, “Teacher says every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings.”
Okay, I’ll stop with the movie shit. I gotta go throw wood in the dragon anyway. Hope you had a good day. Hope at some point you had a memory pop into your head that made you smile. Take care.

It almost seemed to Ray, that Monique knew the music in his mind, each morning when he picked her up he felt a renewed creativity flowing though his veins. It was like overnight his bond to her had somehow become stronger. But still the nightmares disturbed him more than he dared admit. It wasn't until he saw the news story, about the suspected serial killer, the people found strangled with guitar strings and drained of blood that his worst fears were realised....

I have a major news update. I caught 2 extra tiny little mice (or mouses) and 1 regular tiny little mouse! I know ~ EEEEP!!!! I had three mouses in my attic. Not good. Not good at all!
I'm happy to report, in addition to the above news, that all three mice were set free (with full tummies). The were treated well while held captive in the mice cubes. Hopefully, they are making a nice new home, in a hollow log, behind the levee!

Walking in a winter wonderland...
Well we have snow, snow and yet more snow. School canceled, Fred can't get out of her driveway to open the store and more snow on the way. Oh well, don't care. Think it's a good day to write. Got my cup of coffee and that's what I'm gonna do. Hope everyone is doing well.
Today is lovely! It's raining, and though I wish it were snow (lucky Elena!) this will do for now I guess. Once in a while the rain freezes into sleet and makes a cool noise on top of my patio room and the aviary.
Last night in Kung Fu we all had such a great time. We worked really hard in basics class and then in advanced we did locking and trapping and throwing. I'm feeling all stretchy today, also I think I caught a cold but it's not so bad.
As we were closing up the school I asked Sifu when our party was going to be and he said he didn't think we were having one because no one could afford it. This was a MAJOR bummer for me. I told him, "Yeah, I guess I understand. But, let's have one anyway!" and he was like, "Well, okay." In the end we decided that whoever wants to will just meet up for a night out. It probably won't be that many of us. Me, the Empress, Lady Chrysanthemum, Beautiful Boy, Snarklit, and Sifu is my guess. Maybe Scarred Hardcase and Tattooed Sweetheart.
This afternoon I'm going to see TDTESS. It plays at 4:10 around the corner here. I guess I'll go out to the grocery store and get a pint of ice cream for dinner and then head over to the theater.

1. What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before?
I almost wanna say the thing about college, but I have applied for and been accepted to college before. Just not this college. Umm, let's see. Sent out an entire manuscript. Got fired. Oh, I know! I got my godson!
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't really make resolutions. If I feel like I need to make a change, I don't wait until a certain arbitrary day to do it. I guess I don't rely on things like the new year to inspire me.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Well my cousin didn't give birth, but she did get her baby. :)
4. Did anyone close to you die?
My good friend's mother passed away on Thursday. I didn't know her though.
5. What countries did you visit?
None, yet!
6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
A book deal! I say that every year, don't I? My blue belt. A hot guy.
7. What date from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I suppose that will be May 11th, when I lost my job. I thought at first I would be so upset, but instead there was nothing but the feelings of freedom and happiness.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Probably making the decision to go to this college and go down this road. I don't think that getting accepted was as big an achievement for me as the decision itself. Decisions freak me out.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Not getting published, I think. Well, that's what it feels like.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I got mad sick in October, sicker than I've ever been. I don't want to do that again in a hurry.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
That's tough. I'm gonna have to say the best thing I bought was tickets to the TBS concert last May. Mom, Jo-chan and I all went together. The concert was awesome and we had a great time together.
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
I'm going to have to copy my friend in Ireland and say "everyone who voted for Obama." I add to this the fact that some people in my family had been Republicans, but still voted for Obama because they wanted to do what they felt was the right thing.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Sarah Palin and her ilk. She brought to light how ignorant so much of this country still is. Also, a band I used to like continued to appall and depress me, but that's small beans.
14. Where did most of your money go?
That one's easy: a loan for college.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
So many things! Well, to start with, The Boychild coming home, although technically that happened within the last few days of '07. Obviously going back to school has me peeing my pants in a constant unending stream. And I was, and am, totally excited and inspired by Obama winning the election.
16. What song will always remind you of 2008?
I'm not sure exactly which song, but probably something by Muse.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? So much happier it almost defies definition.
ii. thinner or fatter? I was mad thin when I got sick but that didn't last long. I'm about the same as I was last year: 135
iii. richer or poorer? Poorer by far.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Writing, but I say that every damn year.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Worrying. I waste a lot of good time worrying about things I can't control.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
With family, like always. I'm going to ask my uncle to bring his Wii and his RE4 so I can watch him play. I suspect there's no one better and that's kind of inspiring. We mostly all do the same thing every year, but it is stuff that I love doing, which is just hanging out, laughing, playing video games, opening gifts and eating. And this year, watching the Boychild run around like a small crazy person.
22. Did you fall in love in 2008?
No, but I had tons of crushes and flirtations and that kind of thing.
23. How many one-night stands?
None, that's not my style.
24. What was your favorite TV program?
House, as usual. Although I did get back into The X Files and watching them on DVD. And recently I got into Family Guy.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Yeah, I actually do, which is weird for me because usually I'm such a mellow kinda gal. I hate ex boss Dr. Douche. I've always disliked him, but now I actively hate him and wish bad things to go his way.
26. What was the best book you read?
The Pillow Book by Sei Shonagon.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Going to have to go with MUSE on that one. THANK YOU SPLASH, WHEREVER YOU ARE.
28. What did you want and get?
Change. A really big change.

Iron Man, by a mile.

I was 36, and I baked a pie and cleaned the house.

Hot guy? Or maybe to see the look on Dr. Douche's face after a few events happened.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?
"The Assassin." Heh. But that's only when I was going out. Normally I just wear whatever is comfortable for the season.
34. What kept you sane?
I don't really have a problem staying sane, to be honest. O_o Probably a good balance of chemicals in my brain keeps me sane.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Obama. I found him very inspiring. But if "fancy" means "ooooh he's hot / delish eye candy," then maybe Robert Downey Jr. this year.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The election for sure. There are issues that area always getting me going, like the environment, human rights and the separation of church and state, but those are for every year.
37. Who did you miss?
Some friends who either moved away or who I just don't see anymore. Also, I still miss Trisky.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
I would say my godson, but technically I "met" him in '07. Well, I met Solly, Smoke and Fimble, and we spent a day in Disneyworld. So that was pretty awesome. :)
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008:
I would love to say that I learned that you can't fight everyone else's battles and that you can't expect people to have your back, and that sometimes you have to just let injustice go, suck it up and STFU, but I would be lying because I didn't actually learn that and probably never will. I could say that I learned that you reap what you sow, but I already knew that. Maybe I learned that it's never too late to start over. I think logically I knew that but somehow felt it applied to other people and not me. So I guess I can say that I learned that I can start over.

I just think that Klaatu should realize that there is a HUGE difference between "seeing the good side" to a person (or the entire human race) and actually believing that they will change. Everyone says they can change when it's about to end, and maybe they change for a little while until they think the threat is over, but you can't change what is fundamentally there, you just can't.
And seriously, if all Helen had to do was prove to Klaatu that humans had a good side and weren't merely destructive, let's forget about the whole "Oh I miss my dead husband and love my stepkid, watch us mourn together" thing, and instead just have sex with him. I mean if he was moved simply by witnessing something as trite as a cemetery scene, why not just skip over all the syrupy stuff and just bang?
That's what I would do. If an alien came down saying he had to destroy humans to save the planet, but maybe not if only he could find something decent about the human experience, and he was all Keanu Reeves looking, I would do that.

MONDAY I have a cocktail party with some of my training sisters who no longer train, and with my first Kung Fu teacher, my Lao Shir. SO much fun!

Well I guess the point of it is, I'm feeling so mellow and joyful and holiday-like.
Now here's where my OCD kicks in and I have to start knocking on wood madly (no, seriously,) because everyone I care about is going to get together sometime over the next week. I get to see everyone!
And we're all alive, healthy, staying afloat in a nasty little economy, and happy.
There is good food to eat, fun games to play, good prezzies to give and receive. Good movies to watch, songs to listen to, and books to read. There are goodlooking guys to flirt with and parties to attend. There's awesome Kung Fu to learn and Hula to teach. And then there's college!
So I'm kind of giddy!

Sorta busy and sorta not. Like right now I am just sitting here writing drabbles of stories to amuse myself. :)
As far as going back to school, well the thing is that it wasn't just my best option, but really my only one. I can't rely on writing because that's hit or miss. Teaching dance would not be enough to support me and all my mad dreams. :) I don't have a husband to rely on for a supplemental income. And I just plain don't have any other skills.
My only other aptitude outside of those hit or miss fields was only ever biology and medical sciences.
I mean, I'm happy and excited about it, but either way I think my only option would have been to go back to school anyway. :D
