Dig into her.

Of all the translations of Charles Baudelaire's Rêve parisien that I have read, this version is my favorite.

Parisian Dream

I

That marvelous landscape of my dream —
Which no eye knows, nor ever will —
At moments, wide awake, I seem
To grasp, and it excites me still.

Sleep, how miraculous you are —
A strange caprice had urged my hand
To banish, as irregular,
All vegetation from that land;

And, proud of what my art had done,
I viewed my painting, knew the great
Intoxicating monotone
Of marble, water, steel and slate.

Staircases and arcades there were
In a long labyrinth, which led
To a vast palace; fountains there
Were gushing gold, and gushing lead.

And many a heavy cataract
Hung like a curtain, — did not fall,
As water does, but hung, compact,
Crystal, on many a metal wall.

Tall nymphs with Titan breasts and knees
Gazed at their images unblurred,
Where groves of colonnades, not trees,
Fringed a deep pool where nothing stirred.

Blue sheets of water, left and right,
Spread between quays of rose and green,
To the world's end and out of sight,
And still expanded, though unseen.

Enchanted rivers, those — with jade
And jasper were their banks bedecked;
Enormous mirrors, dazzled, made
Dizzy by all they did reflect.

And many a Ganges, taciturn
And heedless, in the vaulted air,
Poured out the treasure of its urn
Into a gulf of diamond there.

As architect, it tempted me
To tame the ocean at its source;
And this I did, — I made the sea
Under a jeweled culvert course.

And every color, even black,
Became prismatic, polished, bright;
The liquid gave its glory back
Mounted in iridescent light.

There was no moon, there was no sun, —
For why should sun and moon conspire
To light such prodigies? — each one
Blazed with its own essential fire!

A silence like eternity
Prevailed, there was no sound to hear;
These marvels all were for the eye,
And there was nothing for the ear.

II

I woke; my mind was bright with flame;
I saw the cheap and sordid hole
I live in, and my cares all came
Burrowing back into my soul.

Brutally the twelve strokes of noon
Against my naked ear were hurled;
And a gray sky was drizzling down
Upon this sad, lethargic world.

— Edna St. Vincent Millay, Flowers of Evil (NY: Harper and Brothers, 1936)

Mayo, and S(S)S, I'm writing my good day to you guys a little late today. ^_^ It is a beautiful fall day today, so I went out parading and looking for awesome cemeteries. I remembered seeing one that looked really promising once while on a detour back from The Bad Place Where I No Longer Have To Be. I couldn't remember which through-road it was on, so I went all over the north road and south road, weaving through the through-roads. (And there are tons of them.)

About the north fork of Long Island: It's basically three different things: Farms, vinyards and cemeteries. All different kinds of farms, like potato, berry, corn, pumpkin etc. Vinyards far and effing wide. Out here, it's known as "Wine Country." There's even a sign welcoming you to "Wine Country." O_o So, it's a beautiful drive, and all the trees are red, yellow, orange and incredible gold. But you know me! I went looking for the cemeteries.

About me: I don't know how many people know this about me, but I am obsessed with statues. I can't even begin to describe to you how drawn to them I am. Big ones, little ones, and all different kinds. I like the old stone ones best, but I like them all. They have expressions that I think many people miss. They are either very eerie, or very moving. I almost expect them to spring to life, or to slowly form a different expression from the one already cast in stone or resin.

I went to two cemeteries today; one an old one, and one relatively new, from around 1900. That's the one that had really awesome statues. So, here are some photographs that I got today.

Oh, I want to ask you: do you guys, or does anyone, know anything about angels or anything? Because there was a statue of this one angel,and he had a staff with a flower on it in his left hand, and his right hand held a drooping flower. They looked like lilies. Does that ring a bell? If he had a name, it was rubbed away.

The whole statue, from below.

Closeup of the flower.

And a closeup of the face. What an awesome face, right?

This one I called the Supercilious Madonna. Because she looks so disdainful, right?

The naughty, creepy angel. She looked so inoccuous--as statues often do--until you get real close.

Mary demands to know the deal with all these goddamn flowers! Some of the Madonna ones, when she's got her hands out like that, look so put-upon sometimes.

Baby angel reading to a bird in the sun.

This statue made me sad. Because it's so worn away, not an angle left on it. Doesn't it look soft?

This was so cool: a rotted statue with an angel over it.
See how the face is gone?
It's so eerie how it fell over, and the angel one is standing over it now.

This is the entire album if you ever want to see the rest.

^_^

You got it, A. They kind of groaned their way through it, with a few wheezy "Brains!" thrown in for good effect.

There's some kind of dark film festival going on downtown tonight. A theatre near a pub we were at for my friend's birthday was letting people in for free if they showed up dressed as zombies. A group of them came into the pub in full costume for a meal before the show. One of our group asked if they'd serenade the birthday girl, and they did so gloriously.

She got a pic of them. When she downloads it I'll post it.

The greatest irony of love:

Loving the right person at the wrong time, having the wrong person when the time is right, and finding out you love someone right after that person walks out of your life... And sometimes, you think you're already over a person, but when you see them smile at you, you'll suddenly realize that you're just pretending to be over them just to ease the pain of knowing that they will never be yours again...

For some, they think that letting go is one way of expressing how much you love the person...In my opinion, some are afraid to see the one they love being held by someone else... Most relationships tend to fail not because the absence of love. Love is always present. It's just that one was being loved too much and the other was being loved too little..

As we all know that the heart is the center of the body but it beats on the left. Maybe that's the reason why the heart is not always right...

Most often, we fall in love with the person we think we love but to only discover that for them, we are just for past times, while the one who truly loves us remains either a friend or a stranger...

So here's a piece of advice: Let go when you're hurting too much. Give up when love isn't enough, and move on when things are not like before... For sure, there is someone out there who will love you even more...
