Dig into her.

Of all the translations of Charles Baudelaire's Rêve parisien that I have read, this version is my favorite.

Parisian Dream

I

That marvelous landscape of my dream —
Which no eye knows, nor ever will —
At moments, wide awake, I seem
To grasp, and it excites me still.

Sleep, how miraculous you are —
A strange caprice had urged my hand
To banish, as irregular,
All vegetation from that land;

And, proud of what my art had done,
I viewed my painting, knew the great
Intoxicating monotone
Of marble, water, steel and slate.

Staircases and arcades there were
In a long labyrinth, which led
To a vast palace; fountains there
Were gushing gold, and gushing lead.

And many a heavy cataract
Hung like a curtain, — did not fall,
As water does, but hung, compact,
Crystal, on many a metal wall.

Tall nymphs with Titan breasts and knees
Gazed at their images unblurred,
Where groves of colonnades, not trees,
Fringed a deep pool where nothing stirred.

Blue sheets of water, left and right,
Spread between quays of rose and green,
To the world's end and out of sight,
And still expanded, though unseen.

Enchanted rivers, those — with jade
And jasper were their banks bedecked;
Enormous mirrors, dazzled, made
Dizzy by all they did reflect.

And many a Ganges, taciturn
And heedless, in the vaulted air,
Poured out the treasure of its urn
Into a gulf of diamond there.

As architect, it tempted me
To tame the ocean at its source;
And this I did, — I made the sea
Under a jeweled culvert course.

And every color, even black,
Became prismatic, polished, bright;
The liquid gave its glory back
Mounted in iridescent light.

There was no moon, there was no sun, —
For why should sun and moon conspire
To light such prodigies? — each one
Blazed with its own essential fire!

A silence like eternity
Prevailed, there was no sound to hear;
These marvels all were for the eye,
And there was nothing for the ear.

II

I woke; my mind was bright with flame;
I saw the cheap and sordid hole
I live in, and my cares all came
Burrowing back into my soul.

Brutally the twelve strokes of noon
Against my naked ear were hurled;
And a gray sky was drizzling down
Upon this sad, lethargic world.

— Edna St. Vincent Millay, Flowers of Evil (NY: Harper and Brothers, 1936)

Hey FASC! RW to answer your question here (I don't want to be incessant at Mayo's, LOL!) I am going to the folks' to meet up with everyone. I hear tell they are getting The Big Sandwich. And the party is for me, my cousin, her husband, and our Gran. Among us we have birthdays on the same two days. i also share a birthday with my brother. Crazy!

Another dig at amyranth. she really is a child

Anonymous said...

Anon at 5:57, you are pathetic, really. Is spying on Kapunua and the other girls on the porch to see if they make "digs" at Amyranth all you have to do? Because it certainly looks like it to me.

Anonymous said...

Anon at 5:27,nobody cares. These little games at trying to get people mad at each other is getting you nowhere. I think everyone is tired of it already.

I had a lovely night and it's a beautiful day :)

gnothi seauton said...

Hiya Ergo.

Why'd ya have a good night or shouldn't we ask ;)

ergoproxy said...

you can ask GS but I may not tell! ;)

no really we had a 21st party and it was lovely
Maltese family so you just knew the food would be great!

how are you?

gnothi seauton said...

Of course. Duh. What did you decide for the male twin in the end?

ergoproxy said...

we got him a belt type thing with zippered pouches to hold hooks etc, that you wear around your waist
and some hooks and such
it's something he'll be able to use

gnothi seauton said...

The thing is with fishermen they can never have too much equipment. I'm sure it will come in very handy.

So lots of fun, food and frolics?

ergoproxy said...

it wasn't a really outrageous party but it was really nice, they have a sugar cane farm and it was held out in one of their sheds. Just good food, drinks and talking to people.
Their mum , aunts and rellies had been cooking nommy pastizi and such all day (filled pastry things)

gnothi seauton said...

They're the best kind, finding out how everyone's been, catching up on news etc

Together with Mediterranean food ... what could be better!

ergoproxy said...

..and free beer! hehehe

so have you had a good week/weekend?

gnothi seauton said...

Mmm, not great, but things are on the mend and can only improve :\

I have half term off this week though so a chance to recharge and such.

What's on the agenda for the remainder of your Sunday?

ergoproxy said...

oh sorry you had a less than enjoyable week, but half term will be a nice break

rest of sunday is a bit of gardening , laundry nothing exciting
our daughter had a sleep over so she won't be home until after lunch, then a lamb roast for dinner

gnothi seauton said...

Sounds lovely ^_^

I'm sorry Ergo but I'm done in for the night. I'm going to head off if you don't mind.

Take care and enjoy the rest of your day.

-A

Anonymous said...

Amyranth said...

Oooh!

Trick or treat!
Smell my feet!
Give me something good to eat!
Not too big!
Not too small!
Just the size of Montreal!

-A

resurrected wreck said...

Thanks, A! ^_^

I'm quite well. Just got back from a Night Of Dread at the park up the street. Music and shrines and fire and giant scary puppets - very enjoyable!

How are you today?

Amyranth said...

I haz chocolate like I bought the rights to it!

*passes around a bowl with assorted treats*

-A

We is wanting some halloween candy!

Amyranth said...

RW, not bad. Unwinding with a Lime Margarita, part of the Saskatoon Care Package. Very well made.

But yeah, just shopping, making more parts for my costume, and cooking.

Are you doing anything for Hallowe'en?

-A

resurrected wreck said...

I never buy Halloween candy as no Trick or Treaters ever come to my back-of-the-house door :/

Maybe I should buy some just for myself.

Anonymous said...

Amy, you got the good stuff! I will come tricker treating at you house! :)

resurrected wreck said...

Nope, no plans for Halloween, A. I'm invited to a house party, but I don't find those things particularly enjoyable ao I don't intend to go.

How's the costume coming along?

resurrected wreck said...

You got a care package from Saskatoon, A?

Anonymous said...

That's what i do rw, i buy candy and if nobody comes well.....someone's gotta eat it!

resurrected wreck said...

Hi, trick or treat anon :)

resurrected wreck said...

Good idea!

Anonymous said...

Hi rw, how are you?

resurrected wreck said...

Not bad at all, thank you ^_^

How are you this evening?

Anonymous said...

I'm good, but thanks to amy,i need something sweet to eat!

Amyranth said...

RW, slowly. Right now it's just the sewing left, and the wings. I figure the wings will take me a better part of the week to do at about an hour a day. The sewing will probably be done tomorrow.

So, I'm coming in under the wire, but it's going to be finished this year!

And buying Hallowe'en candy for yourself is the real aim of Hallowe'en. All adults know that, and I just figured it out myself this year.

Anon, we try to get the good candy! Make sure you come in costume, and you'll get a big chocolate bar, instead of a little one!

-A

resurrected wreck said...

Onje of our neighbours where I grew up always handed out large chocolate bars at Halloween. All us kids loved her.

Amyranth said...

O_O

Edmonton might as well go home!

Amyranth said...

That's what I just said! Apparently, they can't leave the game now, so they get to spend the rest of it tripping around like little daisies!

Even the TSN guys can't believe it.

-A

They might as well just relax and try to have a little fun with it, I say!

resurrected wreck said...

Maybe they should have a picnic on the field.

Amyranth said...

LOL!

Yeah, open the Gatorade Keg and just stand around, sipping while the Riders play with themselves.

Not like that. :P

ergoproxy said...

oh I just had a look back, that poor anon, I am glad elena tried to comfort them befoer the other anon spoilt it

we all get that way at times, but it can feel so overwhelming, a few kind words can make so much difference

ergoproxy said...

have a nice bath RW!

oh amy I didn't know you had a headache. you have ant lavender bath oil? It helps headaches

Amyranth said...

Ergo, I think it's the change in air pressure that's doing it. We're expecting high winds and crappy weather tonight.

I'll be right back, I have to change my bedclothes.

hi carrie, elena, and amyranth. :)

regarding the anon earlier, sometimes, just saying how you feel helps a little. lets out the poison, you know? hopefully, that was the case here. maybe just being seen for a moment here was a help.

toujours said...

oh, i'm sorry! and hello to you anon, as well. :)

Carrie said...

She kinda lost it after the opening, the tabs she has are for Frank's part, and that's hard when you haven't had lessons. But cool points for even trying.

Carrie said...

And TJ, I agree with you about the anon, sometimes you just have to say it, that makes it better.

Carrie said...

Ergo, when you come back from your lunch, I was robbed of Museness last night! I gathered up my Ipod and headphones, headed off to bed, and then there was a drunkish husband in there. Denied!

the full mini-bonfire. i thought the way the sun was shining behind the smoke was neat.

aluminium cans are good, or copper wire, the flames go a really pretty green, salt will be really red

SS baby,

Anxiously awaiting your Halloween offering as well. Will it have zombies? Ghosts? Vampires? Werewolves? Jimmy Hoffa? (Oh wait, I already asked about zombies, didn't I?)

I miss seeing you around the Castle. Sometimes I hear a bit of a tune, or a giggle, or some loud cursing, and I think, "Oh, that's SS." Of course, I could look for the wildlife you've amassed around yourself. That should do the trick.

Speaking of tricks, I prefer treats to tricks, so if I come knocking at the door to your room, be prepared. :D

Goodnight, precious. I love you.

My heart to yours, always.

not much, I'm feeling really tired, one late night and I'm a mess!

I find I can only load one pic at a time in photobucket, in the normal upload, or it jams up
and the copy link thing still isn't working for me

photobucket don't like me much either, but that's just because of dial-up and the fact that they have too many flash ads. grrr.

elena said...

Yep, it's giving me trouble but I will win!

I'm sure he won't mind Ergo. It really was a great day. We also went to a very old cemetery on the Fort and I took picture of gargoyles at the Veterans Administration. But the cemetery in Lansing was the best. I found one stone with a date of 1848.

I love visiting cemetaries, I have some lovely pics from ones in Brisbane and there is an old one in a gold mining town in the late 1800's ,Ravenswood which became a ghost town and one is a headstone for a guy who died accidentally and then there are a whole lot for kids who all died when an epidemic went through, it's so sad, whole families. My dad used it as inspiration for a painting and it was the headstone, in red dirt, barren with long yellow grass spikes and a rusted little fence around it, and kids were putting flowers in a jam jar and the little girl was sitting atop it watching them, he painted her to look like me, it's one of the only paintings he did copies of as so many people loved it

the cemetary

I must find the pics and scan them to show you (I don't have any of the painting worse luck!)

very neat looking cemetery ergo. all that blue sky makes the graves look so lonely.

i'd love to see that painting.

I'll have to ask Dad if he has a photo of it anywhere

mayo,

ah hell, i don't even know if you read these anymore.

but i write them as much for myself as for you i guess.

i was thinking about high school earlier, for some reason. i was remembering my friends, and the mischief we'd get up to, the parties we had. we once broke into the ground floor of a hotel, just to have a party in the jacuzzi room there (dumb of a hotel to have a sliding glass door on the ground floor, if you ask me, but then, this was montana.)

and yet, there were parties i didn't go to. parties i didn't know about until afterwards. even though i was best friends with these people, even though we were a tight geeky circle of publication staff weirdos, i still somehow slipped outside the group sometimes. i still didn't fit in.

no matter how close i was with them, i was still always the one sitting in the back seat of the car, if you know what i mean.

it's something i still don't understand. is it just self-martyrdom? do i pull away? and if so, what kinked part of my psyche is making me do that stupid thing?

i don't know, and i don't know why this is on my mind. i'm not sad. i'm not upset. it was a pleasant day. i read, i kept going outside to take pictures, it was a good saturday.

maybe it's just middle-of-the-night thoughts.

maybe i should delete the whole damn thing and be cheerful for you.

maybe i'll just ignore all my maybes and click publish, and go to bed and sleep.

yeah, sounds like a plan, stan.

good night mayoman, wherever you are.

Mayo

Yeah I’m just all excited to tell you about my day. This was the first “successful” ghost hunting expedition. Fred and I went to several places but the cemetery in Lansing was the best. We started out at the “Baby Ring”. This is a huge ring on tombstones that are all the final resting places of babies. In the center is a beautiful statue that watches over them. I tried to get a good photo to show the size of the ring but it was difficult. Many of the graves date from the 1800’s. Actually there are two “Baby Rings” but the other is much smaller. Okay, so we parked and I got out first and headed off to take photos. Fred had the other equipment, the EVP, EMF and the digital thermometer. She had just started walking when she stopped and said “wow” When I looked back she was reading the thermometer. It has gone from 60.2 (the actually temp) to 13. She took a few more steps and it went back to the correct temp. I’m thinking something walked by her. So I continued on and started taking pics of the Baby Ring. She moved slowly into the ring watching the temp. It began to drop the closer she got and as she moved into the ring it continued to drop. The temp inside the ring averaged 14 to 32 degrees. We were both freaked. As soon as she came out of the ring the temp went back to 60.

The smaller Baby Ring maintained the normal temp except by one small grave. There it dropped to 42.

We then walked around a bit and I was taking pictures with the digital camera. I never saw anything as I was taking photos. It wasn’t until we got back home and I downloaded the photos that I saw I actually captured two orbs. The first is small and by the base of a tombstone. The one by the tree.

Not all that exciting but hey, it’s the first one. But was I thrilled when I saw the photo of the mausoleum. It almost looks like two orbs. What is really strange is that I captured this orb and in the next photo I took a step back and took another pic and there is nothing there. This mausoleum is stone. There was no glass so it’s not a reflection of any kind of flash. Okay, lame I may be but damn I’m happy.

Oh the other cool thing I wanted to show you is the tree that is very near this mausoleum. I walked by it and then suddenly looked at it again. I see a face. Okay so that’s not paranormal but I just thought it was cool.

So I really hope the links work but you know me and clicky links. I’m planning on going back tomorrow to take more photos.

Well I hope your day was a good one. Well hell since I’m so lame tonight I’ll just go ahead and say it – I miss you. Really hope to hear from you soon.

Night Mayo

and

NiN NiN NiN NiN NiN NiN NiN!!!!!!

Good morning/afternoon/night Mayo, SS, Ergo, Elena, TJ, various anons.... heck, everyone!

I am exhausted!! But, it is the great kind of exhausted. It was such a funtastic day/night!

May I just say, there are no words to describe the performance of Nine Inch Nails last night. Phenomenal doesn't begin to cover it!

Awww....and Trent really misses New Orleans. He still considers it "home". Just.... AWWWWW!

Well, I just wanted to let you all know that I survived yet another Voodoo Music Experience (the best one yet ~ in my humble opinion). I did have to sit through Lil Wayne; but, Mars Volta and NINE INCH NAILS made me forget all about that not so magical experience! ;)

I hope you all had an absolutely fabulous Saturday/Sunday as well. And, I hope you all have an even better Sunday/Monday.

Ergo: *smoooooooooch*

Possum: Pictures and videos on the way, soon!

Daily submission for pondering consideration withdrawn due to exhaustion. I know you're all so disappointed! ;)

Hugs and Love,
~Namaste~

elena said...

It's very sad. One little grave actually has a baby pumpkin. I don't know if I like all those baby graves together like that. It just seems they should be with their families.

Okay Mayo

So since I want to unseal a tin of whop-ass on Photobucket I decided to post one more pic just to see if I can. Ha! This is from the Veterans Home. I just love these gargoyles.
