The day after the day after tomorrow.

I arrived suddenly, and knew for certain that I was in the best place. It was warm and calm and I stood quietly in the moment, waiting for my turn. But, I quickly realized I was alone. Figuring my wait would be short; I let out a breath releasing the smoke from my lungs and viewed my new environment. All around me the black tar covered ground seemed endless, as if I stood in the parking lot for the world’s demise. Its emptiness ran undisturbed to the limits of my sight, and I thought, “When does it all get here?” Then, as I dropped my spent cigarette to the ground, intending to snub it out with the toe of my boot, something caught my eye.

At the hem of my faded, old black shirt was a white thread and without reflection I pulled it. As I pulled, it continued to reveal itself. So I continued to pull, believing that my shirt would soon unravel. But instead, my shirt remained intact while the string started to wind around itself, twining, until it became as thick as a hangman’s rope. With both my hands I began to work against gravity to slow it down, but it quickly stole my grip allowing the rope to spill out, coiling at my feet. When it stopped its fall, the weight of it almost pulled me over and I realized it must be connected to me. I pulled up my shirt and discovered it cleanly attached to the center of my chest.

Then I noticed smoke coming up from the center of the pile and realized the rope had coiled itself around my still lit cigarette. I frantically began to kick at the rope, fearing that it would fuse its way to my heart, igniting it. My success gave way to alarm as I heard from behind me the approaching sound of children’s laughter. When I turned, they were upon me. Several of them grabbed the rope and ran past me. As I watched the rope begin to take off I grabbed for it, but it slipped in my hand. When it disconnected from my chest I fell to the ground and grabbed for its end, but it trailed off behind them, leaving an inky trace.

I remained on my knees. A dull pain echoed in my chest as I watched the children huddle together holding hands to ears, whispering. Several of them looked over at me, but quickly returned to their attention to the group. I felt like an idiot. Oddly, they seemed unfazed by my presence and began to jump rope, their laughter in time with its swooshing rhythm. So, I asked them “Don’t you know you’re playing with the end of me?” My reply came in the most unexpected way, as the smallest of all the children approached me with the seeping end of the rope, smiled and said, “It’s your turn.”

p.s. I’m always fucking late.

Let me get this straight. J came on today and said something to Kapunua. Kapunua went to J's blog and asked her to stop talking to her. J took her stat tracker and hooked Kapunua's IP number and place of residence. Then she posted it first on Kapu's blog. Kapu deleted it. Then she posted it on her own blog.

Wow.

An opinion is one thing; being exclusionary is another.

The people who don't want the poetry and movie quotes are trying to regulate the behavior of others. They are trying to censor this blog. That includes you, Amy.

I do not believe in censorship. Maybe you do and you have a right to that opinion. But you do not have the right to force your desire for censorship onto the people who post here.

QFT.

Mayo has made it clear on past occasions that he is against censorship as well. Sorry, Amy. Of all the people here, you are probably the last one he was "hearing."

A Shirley man was arrested on Oct. 26 for the stabbing death of a Riverhead woman on Oct. 24, Suffolk Police say.

Riverhead Town Police first responded after receiving a report that a woman was found injured at an apartment complex on East Main Street. When the officers arrived at the scene, they found that Beatrice Shaw, 55, had been stabbed to death. The victim’s relatives discovered her when they came to check on her.

The next day, Homicide Squad detectives charged Antonio F. Ropiza, 30, with second-degree murder.

Well, this is all real sweet, guys! Thanks!

No, anon who makes my name into two words: I have always carefully guarded where exactly I was; I gave out false information about it when you people started to really bother me about where I lived. It worked, for a while.

And also, no: my "Crackberry" does not show up as Staten Island. It also shows up as Riverhead. That's where I bought it, that's where my server is. Staten Island is over a hundred miles away from where I live; I'm pretty sure that's in the realm of "no bars."

I apologize to the person who is from Staten Island; I did delete all the info about you that was posted on my blog. I'm very sorry. None of this has anything to do with you.

I have signed in every time to say what I have to say unless I was playing a game, posting quotes or the poetry of someone else.

And in fact, it actually is a pretty nice town if you know where to look. Some parts of it are ghetto but other parts are very beautiful.

So now that we all know where I live, my OS, what browser I use and all of that, would you all like to come to my house for a party and use my computer? ^_^ It'll be fun, I promise. We can watch X Files DVDs all night and eat tons of ice cream.

And at the end of the night, we hold a raffle, and the winner gets my social security number!

The real Riverhead

RESIDENTS of Riverhead, the poorest town in Suffolk County, are forever trying to overcome negative perceptions of the place they live. The Town of Riverhead has spent considerable money and energy trying to reinvigorate the unincorporated hamlet of Riverhead, which straddles the Peconic River, as a commercial center and tourist destination.

The effort has been a modest success, with the Tanger Outlet Mall and the Atlantis Marine World aquarium as its principal achievements. But Riverhead's most poverty-stricken, crime-ridden area -- the neighborhood called Riverside -- is entirely beyond the control of the Town of Riverhead. It is in the Town of Southampton, on the south side of the Peconic.

To distinguish its territory from Southampton's, Riverhead has installed new street signs along the border announcing when one enters or leaves Riverhead. It has tried to open discussions on splitting the Riverhead school district, which includes both sides of the river. Similarly, it wants the United States Postal Service to split its 11901 ZIP code. It has asked news outlets to stop describing the courthouse and jail, which are on the south side of the river, as being in Riverhead.

A Riverhead town councilman, Edward Densieski, even wants to block the sidewalks on the bridges over the Peconic. The Traveler Watchman, a local weekly, reported that he told a town board meeting that ''I'm not trying to fence out Southampton, but I would like to fence out the prostitutes, drug dealers, drug users and other vagrants.''

The Southampton town supervisor, Patrick Heaney, told the paper the proposal ''sounds like shades of East Germany.''

Joey MacLellan, a Riverhead town spokesman, did not endorse Mr. Densieski's proposal. But he said Riverhead wants to make it clear that Riverside and Flanders, a slightly less blighted community east of Riverside, are Southampton's problem.

''The town has been working hard to revitalize its downtown, but for 27 years Southampton ignored those neighborhoods completely,'' Mr. MacLellan said. ''So the board felt it had to do something.''

Community activists in Riverside and Flanders contend that Riverhead's campaign shows too little appreciation for the south-of-the-river neighborhoods, whose residents spend their shopping dollars in downtown Riverhead and the outlet mall.

''It's cutting off Riverhead's nose to spite its face,'' said David Brewer, a Flanders resident and a founder of the Flanders-Riverside-Northampton Community Association.

But neighborhood residents, long accustomed to official neglect, are reacting with a mixture of gratitude and skepticism to indications that Southampton Town will no longer ignore an area that is in every way the opposite of the Hamptons stereotype.

Mr. Heaney, nearing the end of his first year as Southampton town supervisor, has been following through on a campaign promise to more closely focus town resources on the riverfront neighborhoods. Police patrols and building inspections have increased, and the town plans new streetlights and sidewalks, improvements to public parks, a long-term planning study and town acquisition of a crumbling, vacant building on the traffic circle that is the southern gateway to downtown Riverhead.

Riverside surrounds the traffic circle. Full of abandoned houses, littered lots and boarded-up storefronts, it is known as a place to drive through quickly on the way to somewhere else. Flanders has fewer vacant buildings and a few more middle-class homes. But both communities have suffered for decades from poverty, crime and and the absence of commercial development, sidewalks, playgrounds and other amenities that help give a neighborhood a sense of community.

''This area cries out for revitalization, and we are trying to be responsive,'' Mr. Heaney said.

Some community activists are encouraged. ''I am cautiously optimistic,'' Mr. Brewer said. ''It's been a long time since any attention has been paid to us.''

The Rev. Roy L. Pennon, pastor of the Galilee Church of God in Christ in Riverside, said, ''We've come a long way, we still have a long way to go, but I am very optimistic.''

Dr. Pennon said his mostly African-American congregation of about 275 has begun speaking out and attending civic and government meetings. The congregation welcomes proposals to reduce crime, he said, and has plans to build a day care center in an abandoned house the church recently bought at auction. ''In the last year, people here have really started to pull together,'' Dr. Pennon said.

Mr. Brewer also noted a rise in community spirit. ''We were cut off and ignored,'' he said. ''But we're starting to figure out there's strength in numbers.''

South-of-the-river residents got a break last month, when at the urging of Southampton officials the state approved a one-shot equalization of the tax rate in the school district, shifting $1.8 million of the tax burden from Flanders and Riverside to neighborhoods inside Riverhead Town.

Riverside and Flanders property owners said they carried a disproportionate share of the tax load because more than half of the district's Southampton part is preserved land, and thus is removed from the tax rolls, and there is little commercial development. But the ruling has prompted Riverhead to consider suing, Mr. MacLellan said, and the Riverhead town supervisor, Robert Kozakiewicz, continues to talk up the idea of dividing the school district.

(Though downtown Riverhead is better off than the Southampton parts, the town-wide picture is reversed. The Suffolk County Planning Commission estimates last year's median family income in Riverhead at $59,131, the lowest of Suffolk's 10 towns. Southampton was in the middle of the pack at $68,861.)

While the two supervisors disagree sharply on the tax situation, both say they agree about the need for commercial development on the Southampton side of the river. They share support for a hotel and marina complex proposed on the south bank, and for an enterprise zone proposed on Route 24, the main road on the south side of the river.

''Anything we do would have a huge return for Riverhead,'' Mr. Heaney said, adding that Southampton will ask Riverhead business leaders for help in planning a ''gateway park'' on the Southampton side.

But some residents are not pleased with the prospect of more traffic and more buildings.

''I think it's very significant that Southampton can see we've been neglected and abused, but I believe it will take far more than a one-year tax rate change and some new street lights to give this community what it really needs,'' said Therese McGuiness, a Flanders resident and frequent critic of Mr. Heaney.

Ms. McGuinness contended that commercial development would only create more traffic and pollution and a greater sense of isolation.

''What kind of jobs are we talking about? Or is it just a mad rush to develop?'' she said. ''We don't have the roads and infrastructure to handle this. There just hasn't been adequate planning to address all of the inherent problems, and it will take a lot more than a few blue-collar jobs to get people out of poverty.''

She argued that Southampton Town is suddenly interested in commercial development in the Riverside-Flanders area simply because it would not be welcome in the town's wealthier neighborhoods.

''None of this would happen if it wasn't an impoverished neighborhood,'' Ms. McGuinness said. ''Change is coming. It's already here. But it's not all good.''

Mr. Brewer said he too hopes the town will approach development with caution, but also hopes the hamlet study will lead to rejuvenation of Flanders's traditional maritime uses and rezoning to permit the creation of hamlet centers.

Dr. Pennon said a community-wide revitalization would raise hopes for eradicating the blights of drug abuse and unemployment.

''I think the self-esteem of this entire community is going to improve,'' he said. ''It's long overdue.''

As I pulled up, Terri was waiting for me outside her low-rise motel-style apartment complex in the town of Coram. ("Just keep driving until you see something that screams 'suburban slum'," she had directed me over the phone.) "You're here just in time!" she shouted. "There's trouble in Riverhead!"

he popular image of Long Island is as an upscale suburban playground, where Levittown sprawl has spread right up to the pristine beaches of Fire Island. Terri quickly disabused me of this notion. "The economy on Long Island sucks," she said. "Over the last ten years, hordes of companies moved down south and out west to unionless states where there are no strict environmental laws, and where it's much easier to exploit the workforce."

The Riverhead welfare center had the atmosphere of a bus terminal cross-bred with a post office: rows of uncomfortable plastic seats and long, slow-moving lines at the few windows open for business. Screaming, cranky kids were everywhere, bored by the endless waiting; a few entertained themselves by playing with the ST-2000, an ATM-like machine that ran clients through a series of questions before revealing what benefits, if any, they could apply for once they finally made it to the head of the line.

Does it make you feel better about your lives to try and degrade someone else? I am sorry for you. Truly. In fact, I'm not even sure you are human.

Two East End cocaine enterprises were based in the town

By Michael White

News-Review photo by Michael White Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota, flanked by members of the East End Drug Task Force, at a press conference Tuesday announcing the take-down of two Riverhead-based cocaine rings.
Two Riverhead-based drug rings were busted and 17 people -- including six who live in Riverhead and four from Mattituck -- were rounded up and arrested as a result of year-long police investigation into East End cocaine distribution, authorities announced this week.

"This is a major dent into the cocaine trafficking on the East End of Long Island," Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said at a Tuesday press conference in Riverhead Criminal Court, as he stood behind a collection of seized guns, drugs and cash.

Mr. Sapienza was arrested last month after search warrants were executed at his business, SAP's Auto at 944 East Main St. in Riverhead, and a Route 58 garage he rented to store a race car, Mr. Spota said.

Police seized 20 grams of cocaine from a metal lockbox under a work counter at the Route 58 garage, as well as 160 Vicodin painkillers. Scales and cocaine residue were found at SAP's Auto and some $5,000 in cash was recovered from Mr. Sapienza's pocket, officials said.

And after tonight you can go right on back to not existing. :)

Sorry Kapu. She does exist. No matter how much you try to demean and devalue her existence
she's still here. She is reality. You cannot make her invisible no matter how hard you try.

I've watched you do it to other anons. I've watch you do it to other bloggers. I've watched them run away in tears. Not Amy. She's a strong one. She won't let you undermind what she knows. She has friends too. She is precious to those friends. She has value. You don't have the power to change that. Nobody does.

I don't think it will work. She's stronger than all of you assholes put together.

So give it your best shot. I'll be happily watching you fall on your faces... again.

I don't know who the hell this you all you're talking about is. I had nothing to do with Kapu getting fired. Stop assuming all anons are one and they were all involved in some big conspiracy to get Kapu fired. Did it ever occur to you that maybe it was somebody from BN, LJ or another site? Not everybody likes her as much as you do.

Anonymous said...

Then you must make more than a quarter of a mil, or be a huge oil company. O_O Besides, shoots, even if Obama was going to raise the taxes for a ghetto biatch like me/ I'd let him. There are more important things to me than my money, such as protecting my rights as a woman, protecting the few rights that gays have, protecting the environment, getting our soldiers home, and pretty much everything else I believe in. Roe v. Wade is kind of a big one for me.

Whatever you say Kapu. Yes. You've made me change my mind. I've forgotten all about my 7 months of research on the candidates. It really is all about money with me.

You turned me into an Obama supporter in one minute. I'm going to vote Obama on Tuesday.

i'll make sure to tell my mom, ergo. :)

it's funny because they make a point of telling me about australian things now. like my stepdad pointed out australian wine in the grocery store the other day, and tonight i was helping my mom find a particular piece of jewelry, and she stopped to show me a ring she had that was set with australian agate.

cracks me up. :)

toujours said...

i think there already is, ergo. tbh, i haven't been paying too close attention to the process, but some states have early voting available, which seems new to me. plus there's absentee voting, like i did. i voted about three weeks ago.

this is definitely a closely-watched election year, though, no doubt about it.

Carrie said...

I hope there will be Ergo, and I hope they are all bleeding liberal asses like me. But, in my heart of hearts, I don't think Obama will win. Maybe it's just because I haven't backed a winning candidate in like, oh, ever!

And goodnight, reading K! I will have to check out that series. See, normally I don't be all bitchy and pound a point down, but tonight, this blog made me emo. Remember people? Everyone on here has something to offer, be it poems, goofy jokes, their excellent costume skills, recipes, what have you. It's, (or it can be) like a big extended family. You guys, this stupid blog, you don't even know, how much you have helped me. The things that I have tried to change for the better in my life, seriously, it's like a Goddamn Lifetime Movie up in here. Just, thanks. EVERYONE.

carrie, all i can say is *hugs*

this is a special place, and the core of that is still here. i believe that.

ergo, my opinion has always been that americans really only have two civic duties: voting and serving on jury duty. i've never had a problem with doing either. but i can see why it's good to have voting be optional, because that means people have to choose to care as well as choose candidates and policies. we're probably too big for a true democracy to really work, which is why it gets so messy, i think.

'And to the republic, for which it stands'.

And this site is interesting to read about it.

Exactly as I said. Why isn't J's info being posted all over the place? Kapunua obviously has the goods on her too. So why is it Kapunua's ISP and server and the rest of it getting posted but not J's?

Anonymous said...

Because J doesn't deserve to be treated like that.

Anonymous said...

Html fail. Let me try that again.

here

Anonymous said...

Nobody does.

Anonymous said...

She didn't actually prove the point either. It looks like Kapu went there twice. And once was to ask J to stop haranguing her. Just because she went to read the blog or ANY blog doesn't mean she said anything. The way I see it we all look at each other's blogs sometimes.

Anonymous said...

KAPU DOES. Fortunately there are some people who are willing to give her what she deserves. I would bow down to J and Amy if they could see me.

Anonymous said...

No she doesn't. Not even you do, and I think you're seriously cracked up.

Anonymous said...

1:10, you have a serious problem. You need some help to get things in perspective.

It's one thing to dislike someone, another to deliberately wish harm on them.

it's not harming her. SHE put her information out there on J's blog. Like I said. If she didn't want her ISP and home town out there, she would have used an anonymous web page.

America is a republic. It has been since the constitution was adopted.

But the main Amendment that tipped the scales from the national government of the United States being a mere republic to being a true representative democracy was the often-overlooked Seventeenth Amendment, which took effect in 1913. Since 1913 the U.S. Senate has been elected directly by the voters, rather than being appointed by the state legislatures. That makes the national government democratic in form, as well as being a republic.

Anonymous said...

Carrie she has lied before about where she lives.

ANd YES it is also Shelby's Dockery's fault that her name got out there too. How stupid do you have to be to put your real name in an email? COME ON.

Anonymous said...

1:15, of course it is! How dare she trust someone not to betray such personal information! For shame!

Carrie said...

I get that anon, and not with pointy finger, honestly. I'm just, I don't know, curious. Obviously, she and I have had our issues, we got over them. She is not as unreasonable as you surmise, that's the only thing I can say.

Anonymous said...

Anon at 1:17, your logic is scarily like someone who blames a rape victim because 'she shouldn't have dressed in such a provocative manner'.
