The following is an excerpt from an old handwritten journal.
Yesterday I saw my reflection and waited for an answer. I stood there like an idiot, swaying and staring. It took a while, but what I found was strength and self-respect. The bags packed themselves and walked right out the door. My hand held tightly to all that really mattered, my own heart. All of my abandon had left the poor thing in a sad state, atrophied. But if I am patient and use it a little more each day it will regain its once youthful bounce. It will be fit for giving...forgiving. Forgiving.

Oh dude, this is an awesome song! I remember the interview that came out after this song got popular where they said that Epic was about masturbation. Patton was all like, "People are ashamed to admit that they masturbate but I'm here to tell ya, I love it!" The dude was an agent of his own creation for sure. Jumping around in a clown suit or dressed like a surgeon, always oddly surrounded by fish like a surrealist Botticelli or something.

But still, I also loved Superunknown and Down On The Upside. DOTU came out when I was having a bad year so some of the memories aren't so hot with that one, but it is still a great album.

It has been a while since I really addressed you, but I wanted to tonight. Your recent posts and comments seem sad or angry or both. I don’t know what is going on in your life, but I can’t help but feel something is not right.
The image I get is of someone in a well, sinking deeper and deeper, but slowly. Above the well, there are those that have reached in for you, tried to grab your arm or hand and you have pulled away, insisting that you are fine and can get out of the well on your own.
So they stop reaching. You look up from the bottom and see no one leaning over the side, no one calling to you or grabbing at you. You can’t see the hands anymore.
But you know what, Mayo? Just because you can’t see the hands doesn’t mean they are not there. They may not be in your sight, but the ones who love you didn’t leave you there.
You just have to ask.
The important thing is that you don’t let yourself sink so far into the well that no one can reach you.
