Conscience Convened Calamity.

Devour me.
Pass me through your lips,
divine.
Chew me up and spit me out,
or swallow me
in time.

Take me.
Pull me in or toss me
aside.
Rejoice in my undying faith
while insinuating
my rhyme.

Shame me.
Judge me with your kind eye,
wise.
Give reason to my rambling
while presuming
my crime.

Reach me
Touch me with your words,
sublime.
Teach me a lesson and rise
or bear witness
my unwind.

p.s. if you continue to hammer the nail the point may find its way clear through or the fucking pounding will cause its head to bury itself too far into the wood to ever be pulled out.

what would you do if your fiance ended your engagement via text message, threw your promise ring into a crowd, did all sorts of fucked up shit onstage towards you and most of all married someone else two months later

Gerard's only getting what he gave out.

As for Eliza's story (if it's true), I feel truly sorry for the girl if she was willing to live on scraps of a relationship for two whole years. That's enough to give her a really poor self-image right there, if she hadn't had one already.

If what she wrote was true, he's got a poor character and she's better off without him.

Err, this is off topic but I want to say something sort of in defense of Lindsey in those interviews re: her views on feminism and "if you want to be like Paris Hilton, be that." I don't want to put words in her mouth, but it could be that she is trying to speak to "third wave feminism." The quick and dirty version of Third Wave Feminism is basically that it's a backlash against Second Wave Feminism, which, while fighting for and gaining an amount of equal rights for women (we are NOWHERE NEAR being considered as equal to men in society yet,) also tended to bury the idea of a woman's sexuality. The Second Wave was a backlash against the view of women as purely sexual objects who couldn't think for themselves but did have some use as a sexual outlet. The Third Wave is a backlash against the aspect of the Second Wave that in some ways took that sexuality away. Third Wave feminists include the punk ethos Riot Grrrls of the 90's, anyone else old enough to remember that / to have been a part of that?

True Third Wavers want to continue the fight for equal rights--politically and in the work force and in general--but not to the exclusion of their sexuality. They're saying basically, as a woman it is your choice if you want to be seen as a sexual being and even as a sexual object if that is truly what you want. Just as long as society--men and women both--keep on acknowledging that not only are you a sexual object, but you are a human being wih equal rights, too. That if you want to wear schoolgirl clothes and jump around not playing music and show your cooter to the audience, you have that right as a human being. That if you want to make out with random guys, be a party girl, carry a floofy dog in a little purse and show your cooter to the paparazzi, you have that right, as well. And encompassed within that is the right to still be treated equally, and when you say "enough, stop looking at me," the rest of the world has to respect that. And that is fine. Third Wave feminism is about having it on your own terms. Second Wave feminism really actually did deny female sexuality in some ways. But remember that this was out of the very basic fear that if you show it to a male-dominated society, that society--women included--are going to exploit it, and that if you wanted to be taken seriously, you had to simply not acknowledge those exploitable assets.

Where Lindsey's logic fails is that, hello, to be any kind of feminist you should NOT rely on your husband to give you a career. In fact the second you start relying on men for any kind of personal power, you have failed. Third Wave feminism is DIY feminism, including "girlie power" and lipstick and backbends etc.

Where Lindsey also fails is being in a band like MSI in the first place, with their songs like "Five Year Old Panty Shot."

While I'm on MSI's lyrics lemme take a second to relate those to feminism as well. One aspect of Third Wave femimism is the idea of taking back words like "Bitch" and "slut" and "c**t" and other female-derogatory words. 3rd wavers want to take meaning away from those words so that they lose their power over women. Where MSI fails is that they are not trying to take meaning away from those words: they are using them in the same derogatory context in which they have always been used, i.e., against women.

This, as all "art" (lol) is totally up for interpretation. Gerard will tell you "OMG no, MSI are just trying to call attention to the negativity inherent in those things via shock value!" Whereas Jimmy Urine is infinitely more honest and will tell you straight up, "It's not shock value and we mean everything we say." The reason "art" is in quotes up there is because Lindsey has recently made a point of saying that she is not a musician--in fact she finds real musicians dull--and that instead she is a performance artist, which is also fine. But the idea of "art" is up for grabs too, and those people who think that pissing on a guitar is not actually "art," well, that opinion is valid as well.

Anyway, I think that's probably what Lindsey was trying to convey: the idea of Third Wave feminism but maybe it didn't come across so well because maybe it's her first TV interview and she was nervous or something like that.

Just rushing in....

Kapunua, thank you for that explaination. I had never heard it summed up like that. It was very insightful.

I don't have much time, but while I understand fully and have often embraced the third wave, there is a big part of me that has seen that as a negative [maybe not in the moment, but eventually]. I have also heard stories from my older female collegues how disappointed they are in this current generation and how it has counter-acted all of the efforts of our foremothers. It's a twisted subject and I feel the tug to see both sides. And you are so right, the second wave (or was it the first) that negated most sexuality. I know at times I struggle whether I should wear a skirt to work or should I just throw on those slacks.

My point...not sure. Oh and of course you know I listened to Consolidated. ;)

Sometimes things do tend to swing too far the other way.

It is awful when you read in magazines and the papers stories by women our mums ages who were unmarried mums and had to give up their kids for adoption cos they had no choice.

It's good that attitudes to sex and other related topics have relaxed, but now we have so many teen mums and some see it as a career move. If they leave school and have kids, they can get benefits and a council house rent free and naver have to go to work.

They breed for greed as one of our politicians has said.

Now, I think it's a shame that we can't get the balance right where we don;t look down on unmarried mums and gice them help but not condone it to such an extent where it becomes profitable for them.

As women are the bearer of men's children, men have always tried to control or repress that aspect, as they can never really be fully sure if their children are really theirs.

It's only been through recent developments in dna techniques, that they confirm things.

In other words, men really don't trust women.

Maybe all the paternalism has always been about control.

Just a point of view.

MissTottenham said...

Soz for the spelling. I typed that fast.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Anima, and I see what you're getting.

The real problem between 2nd Wave feminism and 3rd Wave feminism isn't actually on the shoulders of the feminists themselves though. The problem is with society itself that both expects women to be sexual, but then exploits us when we are. If society itself--men and women both--could see women as 100% equal, as members of the species instead of this stupid "WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS zOMGzzz LULz I JUST DUN GET THEM@@@2" then there wouldn't be an issue in the first place, you know it?

2nd Wave Feminism comes from a lot of fear, anger and backlash, but they are essentially right. 3rd Wave is coming from empowerment as well, but there are a lot of women out there who use 3rd Wave feminism as an excuse to act like a bimbo.

It is a woman's right to act like a bimbo for sure. Society shouldn't judge her, but it does.

Where do you draw the line? I myself try to straddle it and I don't even know where it is.

resurrected wreck said...

I do see what the Third Wavers are getting at. But it seems to me that until the goals of the Second Wave had been achieved, the Third Wave has nothing solid to build on.

Well no, you're right, that is the crux of paternalism: control. One wonders where it came from and how it was handed over or wrested away in the first place.

That is a very good point. However it's also not the fault of the 3rd Wavers that the goal of actual feminism hasn't been achieved yet--and quite possibly never will. What are we to do in the meantime, those of us who want to be overtly sexual? Restrict ourselves? To be sure, you can argue that if it's in the best interest to restrict one's activity in a hostile environment (hello, me,) but that's not entirely fair either.

And I'm not necessarily talking about extreme bimbos who just wave the flag of 3rd Wave Feminism. Keep in mind that 2nd Wave originally didn't include the rights of, say, transgender women or lesbians either. So there was bound to be a backlash.

K I get what you are saying about the Lyn-z thing thought it myself. I have no problem with being who ever you want to be just don't try to call yourself a feminist when you are clearly not.

As for Eliza's story what the hell did you expect she was going to do something at some point.

Elena I dis agree with you so much . I don't see how getting GW just to keep quiet is a positive move. He still has his problems They just took them off the front page. And they are going to resurface. They always do.

Also if the anons want to talk about Eliza and GW let them. They have both put out little bits and pieces to the public. Regardless of knowing the whole story we do now a little.

Martha Smith-Jones said...

Hello RW and Miss t

I am well

Anonymous said...

I'd also like to add that in any "rights" movement you get this sort of backlash. Look at the gay rights movement, and you will find those who are fully flamboyant and just out there gaying it up and being free with it. And then even among homosexuals you find those who think that this sort of camp behavior is embarrassing and detrimental to the cause. In minority rights you have the 50 Cents and you have the Bill Cosbys who think that the entire gangsta movement is detrimental. So it's not just in feminism where you find this kind of split.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I would say it's almost an evolutionary instinct in men, to feel insecure with women.

And that goes with both sexes. Men want to know that the children they are raising are biologically theirs (unless they chose otherwise) and most women want to feel secure and want security for their children.

I would say that the way we view own sexuality has social evolutionary aspects to it. Only now, we live in a completely different world and have to develop new social standards for both sexes.

That takes a long time.

Hi everyone!!!!

I did go and read the Eliza post, and has anyone here dated a musician????

It's not all tits and rock n roll,
and spotlight's its a way of life, it's just different.

If you are not use to that world then it's going to be a shock to the system when you wake up and see the real side of it, and i think that is what happend to Eliza.

Trying to keep a relationship going is a two way street and each person has to except the other no matter what and that what can be many things drugs, alcohol, women and men, you both have to have a mind state that both of you love each other, so it really dose not matter if the one you love is banging someone else, he comes off the road to you and you...ask no questions about what they did on
tour.
If you do and can not handle it, then you will lose the love of your life, cause this is his life and you choose to be part of it.

I know it sounds wrong and I'm not saying every man will cheat on tour, just to believe he will not is just dumb.

So ladies if you meet and fall for someone in a band, make damn sure you love him enough to know you will always be no.2 and except who he is fully and as a whole, cause he will still be in a band long after you have had enough and gone.

Most want a stable relationship, someone who loves them for them, that they know they can depend on when they come home, there are going to be women on tour, i called it road candy.

So i feel sorry for her and the past girlfriend and his new marriage, the road is a hard place to be, everyone glams it up, but most of it is boring.

He and she are going to face there most important event when he comes off the road to real life, not just a week or two, but the day in day out life.
It is a challenge even if you have been with each other for a long long time, its always a test of each others love when you are with a musician.

Eliza got what she wanted, the other girlfriend...who knows!

I won the test of time and still lost my man, just leave it be, don't throw stones or judge, cause we will never know what really happened, trust me.

Please don't flame me, i do not condone what ether one did.
Just let it die in peace.

I think the reason it's hard to accept change is the way our brains seem to function.

Although we have a reasoning side to us, in times of stress or insecurity our thinking tends to revert to primal survival logic.

I believe Susan Falduli wrote something very interesting about the feminist backlash after 9/11.

She was basically arguing that America had reverted to thinking the old social norms, of women in as caretakers of children, and men as strong defenders of society. An image reinforced by Republicans.

So it goes back to how we react to stress in times of insecurity. It's human nature to regress, then eventually push forward.

I do absolutely agree with the idea that this comes from, if not all republicans than definitely the right wing conservative side.

Question of most of the decade is, why have they and their way of thinking prevailed for so long?

You say:

So it goes back to how we react to stress in times of insecurity. It's human nature to regress, then eventually push forward.

I don't know, though. Because there is calamity all the time, everywhere, and always has been throughout history. I do see what you're saying in that a backlash came after 9/11 but you know what I think? I think that the far right conservatives--Bush and his cronies not only included but emphasized--actually used the time of duress to further their agenda. It's clear in the way it was all about "god bless America return to family values."

In other words I'm saying that it was a purposeful maneuver on the part of the far right to use tragedy like this, rather than a natural occurrence.

Anonymous said...

MJ, that's also a good point, but what do you think it was that new religions offered that the older ones didn't? What was so good that it was worth the rights of more than half the populace?

Faludi's premise was similar to yours Kapunua.

That the conservatives seized on this tragedy to push their own ideology. And who are their primarily source of donations? The religious right. And this, in turn, pushes their agenda. The rigid roles of the sexes, and sexuality.

But all this plays into the hands of people's insecurity, which is instinctive in all of us. It's hard to reason effectively when terrified.

hello again

analysing anon, you mean the Eliza tale? or if not which blog story? So if mayo was Gerard he tried to get in early with his opinion? I can see your reasoning, but I doubt it.

and just quietly I think that story kinda comes across a little on the "bunny boiler" side. As PJ said coming second is the worst thing about dealing with any man with a drive to pursue a career add to that the constant temptation of a great many vices and you have a very difficult circumstance to deal with. A woman who is needy or insecure at all herself would find it almost impossible and you can see why so many relationships crash and burn. I am sure Frank has had his share of difficulties along the road of his relationship but obviously they were able to work them out and probably constantly have to consciously work to do that, more than a regular couple would.

Plus with regards to the whole Eliza business, we still don't know what went on from her at the end of the realtionship, so before saying Gerard is a bastard it would be prudent to remember there are ways to hurt a person very deeply which she may have done, we just don't know.
His ring throwing may not have been nice or in the best taste, but at the time he may have felt that way because of something done to him, that doesn't excuse it but it could explain it.

Plus with regards to the whole Eliza business, we still don't know what went on from her at the end of the realtionship, so before saying Gerard is a bastard it would be prudent to remember there are ways to hurt a person very deeply which she may have done, we just don't know.

That's true, EP. And I do think that it would have been better all round if he had kept the whole thing out of the public eye. But I guess maybe that's easier said than done.

Have fun & good luck, TJ! :)

The way power is exercised, is a reflection of the way society functions.

Too much control is not very effective, regardless of how benevolent it appears.

MJ, you might like to see the movie called Zeitgeist. It shows how religion was created as a form of control. It's very scary.

Thank you again, Nice Anon.

The funny thing is it was once upon a time really easy for him. He would get mad and say no comment.

I remember someone put the link up for the movie here. But I could never get it to play all the way.

Ep I am well.

After a long day at work with the stupid people who run everything I am glad I can come here.

MJ it would have been so much easier if he had, but then he was always criticized for not saying anything by fans so maybe he thought he'd be a bit more open, but to go from one to the other extreme speaks to me of a person who had something very major happen and was possible still reeling from it for some time after (you cannot just end a relationship verging on marriage that easily or quickly) which is really why I was shocked when he married, it seemed so much of a classic rebound that it was scary.

O_o Uhh, you don't need to tell me not to fangirl, believe me.

Fear of women instituted by religion has something to do with it. I wonder how the fact that many people are less "religious" figures into the feminist movement since many religions place women in the role of "evildoer".
Lilith
Eve
Pandora
Kali (okay, she's a Goddess, but she crushes men's skulls)

Bad, bad, bad, bad women!

That's true, Star. But what about all the religions that exalted women? What ever became of those and why did they lose out? Because it wasn't always like this everywhere. You know?

No one lost out.
Yes,Christ gave women respect..and it is called Christianity. It is called "The New Testament" Hasnt gone anywhere. Did you ever read the bible? The entire bible? He, Christ, was one of the first man (diety) that did give women respect. The story where Christ defended a woman prostitute. He said "If one of you are without sin, cast the first stone"
No one did. "He told her go and sin no more"

resurrected wreck said...

Um...

Wot?

Martha Smith-Jones said...

You know what EP it was the fans that wanted to know how often he took a shit that were like that. I liked not knowing.
There were things I wanted to know but if he wasn't going to say anything there was nothing I cold do about it so I moved on from it.

Anonymous said...

I have read the bible, anon. And I think that saving a woman from being stoned to death = respecting women, actually. The idea of stoning women to death is abhorrent and should be considered as such to begin with. This whole entire culture of "he must be a nice guy simply because he isn't 100% evil to women" is part of the problem.

Also, Mary Magdelene wasn't a prostitute; she had committed adultry, and that's only if you believe that version of the story, instead of the one where she was Christ's gal.

Which is only applicable if you believe any of the Bible at all.

Have you read the old testament, anon? Where it tells you how homosexuality is wrong? Where it gives you tips on how to beat your slaves? Where it spends most of its time dealing with women as objects?

ergoproxy said...

Oh I hope they have a great time!!!

and anon I don't think elena was saying she knew what went on, the whole point of her comment = noone knows but them

Anonymous said...

"=" should read "does not =", sorry about the typo. Meaning, it takes more than "Hey, don't kill this woman because of sex" to win "respects women" points.

That maybe true but the people who have been running it in is absents don't seem to have to much respect for woman.

Hey everyone, have you heard that they have found a new dead sea scroll in Egypt?

They think it is the first page of the bible.

Experts have translated it and it reads:

To Candy, my sweetheart. Thanks for believing in me.

All characters in this publication are fictitious and any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

Anon did you miss the point? No I don't know that's why I'm not judging. There are two side to every story. I don't know what really happened but for anon's to start trashing Gerard is stupid. This poorly written tale is one side of the story. Just one.

MissTottenham said...

I know RW, it made me laugh so hard when I first heard it that i had to share.

hello again

analysing anon, you mean the Eliza tale? or if not which blog story?

Insightful. He GW)could have been
angry about something very serious.People do get angry. They are human after all.

If you know the times. Men were stoned as well. You are way off base with that.

Pay attention: I was talking about homosexuality before.

It says God may abhor the behavior. Doesnt "hate" the person.

He just consigns them to the flames of hell for all eternity if they don't ask for forgiveness.

Man, you just can't argue the Bible with someone who doesn't believe it or like it.
