Recurrency

It has been the same as far back as I can remember. Even though I spend many conscious moments attempting to force my mind to travel in this beautiful way, I am never able to recreate the flight...not in words, not in ink, not in thought. But, I have learned a day’s dream can fuel a nighttime’s tryst.

And so, it is always late at night and always when I am most hopeful that it begins. At the bottom of the stairs I stand and wait. The moment is always the same. I take a deep breath, and then with my arms outstretched, I lean forward. The lift is immediate. I glide easily up the staircase, out into to the open expanse of the room, and then out the front door.

Once outside, I rise even further and the world below me becomes smaller and I become bigger. I am always alone while I fly. I am light. Flight is effortless and I am unencumbered. I am fearless. And, as I acknowledge that wonderful feeling I become aware that I will soon wake up and it will be over. I will return to my feet with gravity’s hold on me and the notion that I can accomplish anything as long as I stand.

p.s. my pockets are lined with holes big enough to hold coins and small enough to sift dirt.

sdock what you are saying makes sense. People are drawn to the thrill of the unknown. Sometimes they just want to "feel". Good, bad it doesn't matter. Feeling something makes you know you are alive.

Okay then, I'm gonna put it out there. Honestly I remember Mayo bringing this up once in a post, and I've been dying to get on it, but I can't remember where it was. Recently though.

So the question about "why are we never satisfied" leads me naturally into questions about the existence of the soul. Here's why:

My theory, the one that seems logical to me, is that all human behavior can be traced back to chemical makeup and the survival instinct. All behavior. Art, love of beauty, wanting to leave your legacy, searching for healthy environments and how things that are pleasing to the human eye nearly always can be traced back to the survival instinct. Even "near death experiences" in which people "see heaven" or their loved ones etc. can almost be chemical reactions to great physical stress. (Note the "almost": if you are dying already, then what is the need for the trippy endorphin rush? It does nothing to aid either your survival or the survival or your clan or the species. Of course though, like many human anomalies, it could be just there.)

Anyways, so in my mind, I've already shot down everyone's best arguments for the existence of the soul. Past lives, near death experiences, tangential experiences, these are all chemical reactions in your brain.[1]

Art, "love," (for mankind, family or erotic love,) the need for approval, admiration for beauty, power, money, movies, hoarding, self-expression, laughter, specific tastes (programmed usually by the environment) can all, without fail, be traced back to the survival instinct.

All the things we feel, everything that makes us sentient, and everything we use to prove that we are more than just blood and bones and chemistry, well, it's really all blood, bones, chemistry and survival.

The urge for self-destruction threw me for a while--if we're so wired for survival and only survival, wouldn't this out of place urge disprove that theory?--but I already explained that one up there.

There's no proof, and I have no faith. Faith is something you either have or you don't. I don't go on faith because although I think it is very sweet, it is also driven by the hope for something more; again, the urge for survival. Spiritual immortality is the biggest form of survival. Of course we want to believe. That's how strong that urge is. We want so badly to never die that we set up a system of belief in which we never have to.

The thing is, I do want to believe in something after death, because hell, I don't want to stop! I would love to find something to just prove it. Something logical and none of this talk about "faith" and "spirituality" and that kind of stuff. The thing is, no one knows. As much as you believe, you never actually know.

I don't want to believe in god because the idea of some big dude up there making rules and keeping score really effing rubs me the wrong way.

But life after death and spiritual immortality, yeah, I'd love to believe in that. I just can't find any logical reason to.[2]

[1]A note about chemical reactions in your brain causing stimulus or vice versa, and it is an interesting one: Well, the "apple pie" section of your brain lights up like a shop when you smell an apple pie, right? But that doesn't mean that the apple pie is not there.

[2] Yet against my better reason, I still sort of do believe in it.

We want the thrill of doing things that could cause our demise.

Part of that has to be psychological as well though, right?

Boredom and other factors aside, some are more willing than others to take risks in order to acheive what they term as "satisfied."

I don't think there's one determining element.

sdock10 said...

In a way, I am that type of person...trying to feel everything. It doesn't mean I understand it. I just am that way.

I believe we walk along the edge so close to death because it gives us the illusion of feeling more alive.

Maybe by doing so, they are better able to see the difference between life and death.

Yup, there is something to that, I agree.

Anonymous said...

Evolution happens much, much slower than technology. So, it is difficult to relate the two.

No, I agree with that. ANd honestly, the only thing that's gonna tell on that one is time.

However. Even a hundred years ago, people with the cancer gene, people with heart disease or some great disability (genetic one I mean as aquired physical characteristics are never inherited,) didn't live long enough to breed. Now, because we've got medicine and those people are living longer lives with workable reproductive parts, they are passing those genes on. That's not necessarily a bad thing though, because medicine is, well, there.

ergoproxy said...

missT current theory is that we had a common ancestor somem millions of years ago and chimps/apes/human etc branched off from there.
Evolution is a nice theory but it is extremely fluid and changes with discoveries and a lot of questions are just overlooked as it becomes too complex and the evidence is just not there as far as current discoveries goes. The expectation is that they will be answered at some point in the future
It should really still be referred to as an hypothesis but that doesn't sound as good

MissTottenham said...

But life after death and spiritual immortality, yeah, I'd love to believe in that. I just can't find any logical reason to.

I also am a non believer although I enjoy all the stories from other religions.

We have had this discussion before.

I think I have told how I do believe in a scientific afterlife. I believe in different dimensions. I don't believe this is the end. But I don't believe in a big man in a nightdress with a dodgy beard. (don't mean to offend but that is how he is always depicted).

Anonymous said...

Right, people often confuse the word "theory" (which is something that is proven i.e. the theory of relativity) with hypothesis. I do it too out of laziness.

Evolution may be sketchy right now but there's enough evidence to show the truth in it. Yo, it happened. ^_^

sdock10 said...

Ergo,

That Valerian root that you told me to get smells like stanky ass.

But...so far so good.

Anonymous said...

Okay, damn.

That's a lot to take in, but yeah. I get what you're getting at.

I've changed a lot of my beliefs about government and religion. I believe the idea of religion is conjured up for those who need something to believe in, those who (like Jules said) need to know there's more beyond this life.

I think the idea also has a bit to do with calming fears and aggressions, and is used more as a tool than a learning experience.

Government is a totally seperate issue.

But, yeah, I can see where you're coming from.

I think I have told how I do believe in a scientific afterlife. I believe in different dimensions. I don't believe this is the end.

Ahh, now THIS I like a lot. Yep, and quantum theory (yesh yesh, theory,) holds this up. There are other dimensions and it stands to reason that if so, there must be other "you's" out there.

HOWEVER. This theory also states that the other dimensions (which go on at a right angle to the one you're in, and a right angle to that, and a right angle to that: not fluid knots but hard angles, true story,) are going on at the same time. The space-time continuum doesn't care about your perception of it. Everything happens at once, everywhere.

That in mind, can you really have "past" lives and "life after death" if there is no such thing as past, present, future, before, after etc.?

Also, what does this say to the actual soul? Do the other "yous" share the soul? This can (and I think does account for the "past life flashes" we sometimes get, some of us, which implies that there is some connection to your other dimensions, right?

What causes the connection? A soul, maybe?

It's a nice thought. One that I hope is true.

But I don't believe in a big man in a nightdress with a dodgy beard. (don't mean to offend but that is how he is always depicted).

Agreed.

sdock10 said...

Maybe dying is the wrong word...transcending maybe?

Anonymous said...

kapunua note [1] doesn't make sense

I'll try to be a bit more clear.

The question on the table in that instance is this: Every "feeling" you have is a chemical reaction in your brain, right? Sure. Some people have a more highly developed "spiritual" part of their brain, I guess. Nuns, for instance. They did this experiment years ago with brain-scanning nuns while they were praying or "communing with god" to find out which section of the brain was engaged. They found that it lit up like crazy, thus proving that those spiritual feelings were chemicals in the brain.

But they couldn't say "nothing mroe than chemical reactions" because of the Apple Pie Aspect. This states that: Yes, all kinds of "apple pie" receptors light up in your brain when you smell an apple pie, meaning that all the feelings and urges etc. that go with it were chemical reactions--just like the spiritual ones. But that does not mean that the apple pie was not there to be smelled.

This just means that proving that everything is a chemical reaction does not necessarily disprove there being something there to set those reactors off.

and some did live long enough to breed or the gene would be gone now

Right, and that's because of treatment. Not even modern treatment, even older ones.

I liked the stephen Hawkins theory about the 11 dimensions and other universes in our here and now but they are too small to be seen.

Not sure how he knows that they are doughnut shaped though.

I do think that the universe is round though. It has to be to have no begining or end. Spheres are the shape of all things floating in our universe so why not the universe itself.

Yup, I got into this headspace last night after your post.

You can "transcend" without physical death though: dreams; yes I know it's different but it is an altered mental state and all things considered, this is the kind of experience you are talking about when you whittle it down: near-death would be a severely altered mental state.

Or you could be like Dr. House. Electrocute yourself trying to chase down your soul, and find nothing. Then honestly, you would have gained nothing, and lost a profound mystery.

Right, that when you wave your hand around, you are traveling interdimensionally! Which is very neat!

Not sure how he knows that they are doughnut shaped though.

That's some math thing that I will never, ever even begin to fathom. I saw numbers and shut down. Numbers make me from "OMG quantum theory and other realities!!!" to "Wow, I could go for a sandwich."

I think chemical reactions or more likely, magnetic reactions in the brain can explain alien abduction.

When people report their electrical parts of the car going haywire and automatically decided that the loss of time and strange dreams must mean aliens, maybe they should remember that there is so much electricity in the brain. If something is interferring with electricals in the car, why would it not be doing the same to your brain at the same time and inducing weird dreams.

Of course alien abduction is the most obvious answer. And I am just waffling.

ergoproxy said...

so kapunua by your example the fact that certain areas of the brain lit up shows that there could indeed be a sprit they are communicating with , as the mere presesnce of the brain activity does not prove or disprove the existence of the stimuli,
seeing as thinking of a certain stimulus also creates activity in the same areas of the brain as the actual stimulus.
ie: recalling an apple pie will light up the same brain areas, especially if recalled under hypnosis ie: without other interference

They finally stop feeling what's not there, right?

If so, it's taking the brain time to catch up with the body. The origin of the signals start in the brain, technically don't go anywhere (the limb isn't there), then end up back in the brain.

So, where do the signals go if they have nothing to reach? And just how the hell does the brain realize it can feel something that isn't there?

Right, and apparently there are ways to speed up up this process. I don't recall exactly what they were doing, but in one experiment they had amputees experiencing debilitating phantom pain put their remaining symmetrical limb in a box with a mirror that they could see. Tricking the brain like this, they saw a healthy, pain free limb and were able to process "no pain."

It's insane how we are able to fool ourselves, both for better and for worse.

If so, it's taking the brain time to catch up with the body. The origin of the signals start in the brain, technically don't go anywhere (the limb isn't there), then end up back in the brain.

Couple more things re: reality and perception before I head off to bed.

Solly, MissT, and everyone with an interest in "transcendent" reality: Here is a book you will probably love, it is called The Education Of Oversoul Seven. (Yo, I had no idea there was a third book; I should order it.)

I read it for the first time when I was eight and even though it is clearly a work of fiction, it was kinda mind-blowing. I read it again as an adult and found it still mindblowing.

Basically it's about alternate realities and the "other yous" that exist in them, all happening at once, and an "oversoul" who is made up of the parts of all of the "yous." Very crafty book.

One more thing.
This is what I was babbling about after I wrote that poem about light. And indeed, in the actual poem itself. (Mayo, in case you were interested. I know you love the light. Do you love its duality too?) This page explains the experiment which explores the apparent, uhh well, sentience of light. No, seriously.

An individual electron, passing through just one hole in the experiment, seems to be aware whether or not the second hole is covered up, and to adjust its trajectory accordingly.

This is not a hypothesis or a thought experiment. It is a real physical experiment that has yielded this result over and over again.

They do not have an answer to how it can possibly be like this.

Ergo, sometimes you cannot help but feel sympathy for males.

They can boast about the size of their craniums, but it would be hard to go through life having a lot of your decision making processes controlled by a primitive external organ. *smirks*

MissTottenham said...

Well, it is 3:30am here. Time to sign off.

Goodnight everyone, that was fascinating.

I hope any religious people weren't offended by our questions. I have many many questions. I love to see other people's ideas about it.

Nighty night everyone, have fun.

elena said...

Hey Ergo. Is it light were you are?

Anonymous said...

Once again it is the same group of people, or I should say CLIQUE of people, talking over everyone else. The same four or five people with maybe one or two extras. See you are so overbearing, it is not fair to the people who want to talk about other things or who don't think about things like this or aren't interested. If it's not poetry it's this bullshit and Kapu even mentioned poetry again. LIKE ALWAYS.

Why can't it be like it was?

Martha Smith-Jones said...

Hello elena I'm well how are you?

Anonymous said...

My I.Q. is 160 and I am constantly looking for my keys when they are in my hand.

Anonymous said...

Face it anon you're not going to like anything they say. You don't like the poetry and want conversation. They have a conversation and it's not good enough for you. It's not what is being said that pisses you off it is who is saying it.

Besides it's not their fault that you can't keep up with the big kids.

Martha Smith-Jones said...

Goodnight Miss t

elena said...

I just dandy, Martha.

Thanks for asking

ergoproxy said...

It is elena! but it's going I think looks like it'll rain again, it's only 1:30pm

ergoproxy said...

goodnight missT

IQ anon, ditto I can forget what I was doing halfway toward doing it!

Martha Smith-Jones said...

On the PBS special I watched Ep The had a boy who was born with a problem with his brain were the two hemispheres didn't communicate with each other. They were also doing experiments with insect brains. and with how they fly

elena said...

anon it would be hard having all your blood leave your brain periodically too!

ergoproxy said...

Hello amy

I am watching Law and order ci or i was it was a good episode

So anything you guys want to talk about

Anonymous said...

You know that it would be untrue
You know that i would be a liar
If i was to say to you
Girl, we couldn't get much higher
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire

Time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire

Anonymous said...

I'm feeling cold as well. I'm gonna go put some socks on. Brr

elena said...

I was gonna say we could talk about the meaning of life but that one's already figured out.

Say it with me girls.....

elena said...

BC put on socks and a light jacket, that's what I'm doing

ergoproxy said...

Anonymous said...

Elena, thanks. I did just that.

elena said...

yes Ergo you are correct....

Now someone come up with a topic for light conversation

ergoproxy said...

ooh looks like we have a glimmer of sunlight!

actually I was going to ask - does anyone else use the term "sparrows fart" for first light?

as in "she has been up since sparrows fart"

Martha Smith-Jones said...

I'm looking for something to talk about

Amyranth said...

Time, where did you go?
Why did you leave me here alone?
Wait, don’t go so fast
I’m missing the moments as they pass

Now I’ve looked in the mirror and the worlds getting clearer
So wait for me this time

I’m down, I’m down on my knees I’m begging for all your sympathy
But you (I’m just an illusion)
You don’t seem to care (I wish that I could)
You humble people everywhere (I don’t mean to hurt you)

Now I’ve looked in the mirror and the worlds getting clearer
I’ll take what you give me
Please know that I’m learning
So wait for me this time

I should’ve know better
I shouldn’t have wasted those days
And afternoons and mornings
I threw them all away

Now this is my time
I’m going to make this moment mine.
(I shouldn’t have wasted those days)

I’ll take what you give me.
Please know that I’m learning
I’ve looked in the mirror
My world’s getting clearer
So wait for me this time

elena said...

"she has been up since sparrows fart"

I have never heard that saying before. What a hoot. First light? Really? That means first light?

Martha Smith-Jones said...

Well Miss t wants to swim with the great white sharks would any of you do that

ergoproxy said...

amy what is that?

jsut think of a topic MJ I'll talk about anything you like!

Anonymous said...

MJ, definitely not.

ergoproxy said...

sure is elena1

MJ no I wouldn't I've seen what those suckers can do!
and I don't trust the cage...but insaying that I would go in a tank with Grey Nurse or other less man eating types

elena said...

oh hell no to sharks. Last time I was in the ocean I thought I saw a shark (it was a dolphin) but it was out quite a ways and it scared the shit out of me. We Kansas’s people don't "do" oceans much. By the time I got back to the shore I was light headed.

My love,
We will keep our secrets to ourselves
Biding time until ours comes around.
And it will, and it will be soon,
Sooner than we can tell, or realize.
And when that time does come to be
We shall embrace it, hold it fast and surely,
Never allowing any to wrest it from us
For we are two halves of one whole-
Of one soul-
If separated, we will undoubtedly wither to nothing.
You are mine, and I am yours.
Nothing has the power to take that from us.
I will wait, patiently, serenely,
Until I hear your footsteps on the walk,
Your knock upon the door,
Your sweet voice tasting my name like the finest of wines,
And we will never need long for one another,
No, not ever again.

Amyranth said...

And our Angel is back! Hello! I hope all is well with you and your beloved!

Ergo, it's a song by a lady named Chantal Kreviazuk. It's actually really pretty and really powerful.

Imagine...
...a candlelit bedroom.
...you and me standing wrapped in each other's arms.
...your fingers caressing my face.
...my hands twisting in your hair.
...your mouth consuming mine, hot and wet.
...stripping each other naked faster than thought.
...lying on your back as I slide down your body.
...feeling my mouth on you, my lips, my tongue, tasting you.
Until tomorrow...imagine...

Martha Smith-Jones said...

Hello angel how are you tonight

ergoproxy said...

I love this song just to share
by Aneiki

You’re not always easy to share space with.
Some days you wake up ten times bigger than you are.
I can’t get my arms around you
And we are silent worlds apart.
Should I introduce myself?

I’m pleased to meet you
You don’t seem to recognise me
But you know you look just like someone
That I used to know.
I’m pleased to meet you
You know I think you used to love me
But now it seems like that was a whole lifetime ago.

If you don’t look at me do I disappear?
And all you say these days are things I don’t wanna hear.
I don’t think that you remember (I don’t think that you recall)
It was always you and me against the world.
But I’ll introduce myself

I’m pleased to meet you
You don’t seem to recognise me
But you know you look just like someone
That I used to know.
I’m pleased to meet you
You know I think you used to love me
But now it seems like that was a whole lifetime ago.

So I guess I’ll see you round sometime
And one day you might
Think we’ve met before
You’ll turn to me and say,

I’m pleased to meet you
You don’t seem to recognise me
But you know you look just like someone that I used to know…

I’m pleased to meet you
You know I think you used to love me
But now it seems like that was a whole lifetime ago.

...
I heard it at the supermarket this morning and I just love the tune and her voice

That sounds like a line from a Pokemon game.

-A

Anonymous said...

Have I ever hallucinated? I don't think so. Maybe when I had surgery when I was little, but that was about it.

Amyranth said...

Oh ergo, beyond happy.

Infact, everyone who was drinking is now eating and should be asleep soon! Peace!

I kissed him with more passion than I ever believed I could feel. This man touched my soul. My lips slowly traveled down his neck to his chest. The need to touch every inch of him consumed me. I scooted from beneath him and gently pushed him down onto the mattress. I straddled his body and began a trail of kisses that started on his chest then continued to mover lower. My breath, hot on his skin caused him to shutter. Slowly so slowly my lips reached the treasure they sought. My tongue slowly moved up and down tasting him, loving him. I heard him moan when my mouth welcomed him. He was so ready. I knew he was mine.

ergoproxy said...

Zombiekat would be a kickass cartoon

have you ever hallucinated?

Once when I was little I had a high fever. I told my mom the little elephant on my night light was dancing.

Anonymous said...

O_o

It must be soft-pore corn night.

ergoproxy said...

anon, going a little too far there

ergoproxy said...

my hubby was out very late and driving home in the early hours and said to his friend "look there's a truck crashed into the post office" and his friend said"I think we should pull over now"

Anonymous said...

Whatever, *sits and files her nails*

Amyranth said...

Ergo, your husband's friend is smart.

Mine and his brother were out for St Patrick's day and when we left, we got stuck on transit in traffic.

He then turned to me and said "Why did we leave the bar?" and I said "Because we're going to the toy store". The lady on the other side of me started to giggle when both men cheered.

And they wonder why we left the bar.

Anonymous said...

I am afraid I must take my leave, but I am pleased to have been blessed with such illuminating company. Until tomorrow...rest well.

ergoproxy said...

oh he had been working all night not drinking or anything

sheesh drunk haalucinations
a friendw was blind drunk when we were camping - he wandered off to a creek in the rain and we were looking and he was hiding as we were aliens and there was a spider with one big claw and when we got him back we put him to bed and he told another guy that "eddie van halen said I could have your air mattress." seriously the funniest night I ever had, though a bit worrying and annoying, he was a bit of a dickhead when drunk

Anonymous said...

Goodnight and sweet dreams Angel.

Anonymous said...

How was Anon going too far and Angel was not?

ergoproxy said...

goodnight angel hava lovely night and tomorrow

amyranth that is so cool!
"Yay the toyshop!" hahahaha

elena said...

Crap Jake just knocked over the trash cans. I have to go pick it up cause the trash truck comes at sparrows fart.

Ergo did I use that right? I'm totally gonna start saying that for first light.

Be back in a bit

ergoproxy said...

well angel was a bit too, but doing it again wasn't to my taste, but I see your point
i'm glad noone needed to go further, that was more my concern, that it could continue and thank you that it didn't

Anonymous said...

Hi anon

Amyranth said...

Ergo, they fell for it. Completely.

Then, later when they realized we hadn't gone, I asked them if they picked the movie they wanted to see.

They both looked and cheered for the movies.

Boys.

ergoproxy said...

elena perfect usage!

Amyranth said...

Anyway, bedtime for me lovelies!

I'll see y'all in the AM!!

-A

ergoproxy said...

haha amy that is so cute, people who are harmless or funny when drunk are far more pleasant than the sleazy or violent types, but why do so many women get maudlin and depressing?
I had few friends who got sluttly but many got all "you're my best friend...." etc
good reasons I don't get drunk I don't want to know what type I am!

Anonymous said...

Goodnight and sweet dreams Amy *squeeze*

ergoproxy said...

goodnight amyranth sweet dreams and a quiet tomorrow

ergoproxy said...

are you still feeling sick BC?

Anonymous said...

I'm feeling a bit better Ergo, just a stuffy nose. Thanks.

Anonymous said...

Oh okay, Ergo. I just thought it was unfair that the past few nights Angel has posted soft pore corn, but when someone else did it tonight after her, they were reprimanded. But I do agree with you that neither one needed to go any further with it. :)

Anonymous said...

Hi BC, glad to see you back :)

Anonymous said...

An anon with a smiley face. Aww. Hello nice anon :)

Anonymous said...

Aww thanks anon

ergoproxy said...

that's ok anon, I reread angels and saw I had missed a bit, but that is as far as it needs to go I think, sensual is nice, further is not really tasteful.

So are you well anon?

BC that is good to hear there are many illnesses about here too, I have missed them so far but feel a bit less than perky today so "touch wood" I will not get sick

Martha Smith-Jones said...

Good night guys

Anonymous said...

Goodnight mj, sweet dreams. Ergo, yep, but the weather was crappy today so it only made me feel a bit down as well, not to mention I had cramps, but I'm dealing.

Nice anon, if you're still lurking about, how are you?

ergoproxy said...

goodnight MJ sweet dreams

Anonymous said...

I agree with you Ergo. It is a fine line between sensual and tacky. I'm feeling okay, a little blah, but not too bad.

ergoproxy said...

that's good anon, blah happens to the best of us.
I'm a bit tired, which is unusual (it's 3pm) so I'm hoping it's not anything, but as BC said you just have to deal with it.

Anonymous said...

Anon, I guess today is a blah day huh? ^_^

I'm starting to feel tired too, but I'll be up either way.

Anonymous said...

The weather hasn't helped either. It's been cloudy and cold for the past few days, it even snowed last night. I am ready for spring to spring already.

ergoproxy said...

we have just had too much rain,. all summer and heading into autumn it's still coming over!

Anonymous said...

Ergo, it's still raining? O_o

Anon, I'm ready for spring to start as well. I hate winter. Such a bleak season.

Anonymous said...

I'll trade you, your rain for my snow. :)

Anonymous said...

Anon, we can donate most of our snow over to where Ergo is so she can use it. It's been snowing so much here.
