Fried

There behind the casing, a path
you do not dare to follow.

It is fate that has impressed into the dirt
all the places it has been.

When where the earth is dry it is gone,
dusted into every other moment in time.
But where it is wet and allowed to parch
the trail remains and you can follow it
back to where it began.

It is given to chasing rat tails
and following frogs flopping into ponds.

That time spent heeding…
“You will never make it across.”

Until now that it is starved and the fat rat is slow.
But, the old black rope never made it across.

Just like it was told.
It was struck straight through
the middle, crushed.
Pasted to the burning hot asphalt
by a dodging challenge to cross.

Immediately it tried to coil around itself
to pull up from the back end, its entirety.

But it failed, and will lay there frying
until it becomes fully denatured.

While above crossing the trees, its foe glides
and swoops down between each rushing conveyance.

And they will eat!
They will pick apart bit by bit by the bill.
Because they must, they will.

I ran over a snake once. It was an accident, really. I saw it, but for some reason, in my mind, I was thinking "water hose", because it was huge and black and stretched all the way across the road. Part of my brain, however, registered "snake", but for some reason I didn't stop; I didn't even attempt to brake the car.

As soon as I hit it, I realized what I had done. I looked in my rear view mirror and saw it recoiling -- thrashing about in the road. It wasn't dead yet, but I knew that it soon would be.

I was devastated. I just kept thinking how long that snake had lived to get that damn big. And I had been the one to end its life.

Black Marigolds

Even now
Death I take up as consolation.
Nay, were I free as the condor with his wings
Or old kings throned on violet ivory,
Night would not come without beds of green floss
And never a bed without my bright darling.
It is most fit that you strike now, black guards,
And let this fountain out before the dawn.

Even now
I know that I have savoured the hot taste of life
Lifting green cups and gold at the great feast.
Just for a small and a forgotten time
I have had full in my eyes from off my girl
The whitest pouring of eternal light.
The heavy knife. As to a gala day.

I had to get dressed at such so how are you?

Hey MissT

I'll tell Flighty you said so.

Sorry I wandered away but a crisis arose. I mistook my thumb for a potato. Ouch. Stabbed that little sucker, I did.

ergoproxy said...

Mayo I see that so often, we have a lot of snakes and very often they are hit, I have done it they are really hard to avoid, though I have also stopped and let some cross if I have had the chance.
But then the birds get them , with ours it is often hawks, brahminny kites and wedge tailed eagles

I have great respect for snakes, unless they are in or very close to the house and venomous (read: deadly)
we have a big carpet snake living in our shed, and one who frequents our roof, and we recently found we have a night tiger living in the roof too, and assorted tree snakes
they are amazing to watch

once my hubby saw a rat above him in the hen house and it wasn't going anywhere away from him and he wondered why, they usually run, he swung the torch along the beam and there was big old carpet snake at the other end, just watching it

The Snake SongHe swallered a frog and hollered yum-yum
He slid down the hillside and darted his tongue
He entered the garden on this bright moonlight night
Then he stopped in his tracks, it was love at first sight

(he said) My skin is black, your skin is green
You dwell in a garden, I live by a stream
Although I'm short and stocky and you're long and lean
I've got a crush on you
Then he squeezed her tighter and tighter and tighter
I've got a crush on you

He said I'm a king snake, and you'll be my queen
With a butler and serpents, and your own private stream
If you refuse me it would be such a shame
Cause I'm so tired of doing my own fang

Then he squeezed her tighter
To excite her and delight her
Oh I've got a crush on you
(and I'll be back tomorrow)

Next day when he got there, a two-legged man
Was holding sweet green thing in his big human hand
A long jet of water shot out of her nose
Ol' king snake had fallen in love with a hose

(he said) My skin is black, your skin is green
You dwell in a garden, I live by a stream
Although I'm short and stocky and you're long and lean
I've got a crush on you
Then he squeezed her tighter and tighter and tighter
I've got a crush on you

Mayo,

But I should be honest and real here...

I swear to goodness that I kept reading "There behind the casTing, a path you do not dare to follow."

WTMFF?? I read it like that at least 3 times.

I was like, casting what? Like a statue? Like a movie? What the hell? And why would I not want to follow them or it?

Oooooh, casing....gotchya, except not really, because I was too busy being hyper-metaphorical and not literal and did not get the snake part until, Smoke was like "duh, yeah a snake", and I was like "oh".

Hey, but at least the snake tried to make it across, right? I admire the snake for trying. Or maybe it's not admirable, I dunno. Maybe it was silly for the snake to try. I mean all the other snakes turned out to be right, he didn't fucking make it. Do you suppose they shook their head and said, "I tried to tell that silly fucker not to go chasing rats on the highway, gotta leave them field mice alone, they'll get you into nothing but trouble."

But what if...what if the snake had made it across? He would have been eating good that night. Then, I bet all the snakes would have been like, "see, I knew he could do it! That's my friend right there, ain't he cool?"

Yeah, I dunno. I just really pull for the snake most of the time. Mainly, because they eat rats, and I fucking hate rats. (Do not even start that shit about how cute they are!)

Awh well, such is life. We're all busy as hell just trying to get somewhere else.

You never know, until you...*splat*

Damn.

Love to YOU Always,
S

p.s. But what do I know?

*waves to Ergo*

Hope you have a nice Thursday!

Hope the rest of you all have a nice evening!

One more note before bed, I don't think I've ran over many snakes. I have however almost stepped on a few and I have watched my Daddy chop their heads off with a garden tool or whatever was available in the back of his truck. Shovels come in handy.

Anyhow, I can remember when I first started driving. I saw the little turtle in the road from a good distance away. My Mama was in the passenger seat making me nervous as usual. She hated driving with me.

"There's a turtle! There's a turtle!"

"I know, I see him!"

I did my best to adjust. I measured, I calculated. I swerved, but my depth perception is fucked up at best.

I heard the loudest smash thump crackle crunch. I swear that I ran over that little turtle with all 4 tires.

My mother gasped in horror and I shuddered at the thought of looking in the rear view mirror. I knew that turtle was going to be scattered all across that highway, and he was.

I don't think I ever got over it really.

Birds, squirrels, the occasional armadillo and possum, snakes, dashing deer and dogs and kitties, and those poor little turtles.

And every now and again you get a dumbass that thinks he can ride his bicycle like wherever he wants, you know, like my lane!!

Bless 'em.

Anyone who has nearly flipped a vehicle trying to dodge a critter surely knows exactly how I feel.

Just sharing...

Sweet dreams, guys!

Nite, nite!

Amyranth said...

I'm glad turtles don't run amok this far north. O_O

Now that I think of it... I've never seen a snake in Alberta either. Tons of little baby ones in the maritimes though. Little green snakes, no thicker than your ring finger and so adorable.

Anon616 said...

Hello Mayo, SS, Ergo, Elena, Amy, MissT, Sweetcheeks, TJ, various anons, everyone!!!

What is this world coming to when even the serpent can not resist temptaton? I suppose we're royally screwed when that happens!

Oh, I bet that fat rat knew exactly what it was doing. Yes, I bet it did.

That rat knew the snake was parched and starved. He knew he could tempt that black snake into crossing that road. He probably stood on his hind legs and saw that vehicle coming.

He ran back and forth across that road creating that path. Timed it perfectly to rid himself of his mortal enemy. The one who had been hunting him, stalking him, haunting him in dreams...

It was him or the snake. And, that rat decided it wasn't going to be him!

In other words, that was one smart, fat rat!!!!

Ohhh... and Amy is correct! It's the circle of life! It ends well for some; but very, very badly for others.
:P

Speaking of temptation (as I was), you do like Charles Baudelaire, don't you Mayo? I seem to recall a Baudelaire post. Well, here is one I like very, very much:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THE TEMPTATION
Charles Baudelaire
HE Demon, in my chamber high,
This morning came to visit me,
And, thinking he would find some fault,
He whispered: "I would know of thee
Among the many lovely things
That make the magic of her face,
Among the beauties, black and rose,
That make her body's charm and grace,
Which is most fair?" Thou didst reply
To the Abhorred, O soul of mine:
"No single beauty is the best
When she is all one flower divine.
When all things charm me I ignore
Which one alone brings most delight;
She shines before me like the dawn,
And she consoles me like the night.
The harmony is far too great,
That governs all her body fair,
For impotence to analyse
And say which note is sweetest there.
O mystic metamorphosis!
My senses into one sense flow~~
Her voice makes perfume when she speaks,
Her breath is music faint and low!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I do still prefer Bukowski though! But, that's just me!

SS: Isn't our Elena's daughter incredibly talented???!!! Hell yeah, she is!!!! I'm so glad you were able to watch the video of Flighty singing. I think she was absolutely brilliant!

I hope you saw it too, Mayo!

So, how is everyone tonight? Happy and well, I hope!

I have some very good news. I did it! I found the perfect Jazz Fest hat today!!!! I got four thumbs up and a "that's the one" from strangers passing by (while I tried on four different hats). I was torn between two hats; but, I decided they were right. That was the one!

Ergo: I shall absolutely get pictures of said perfect Jazz Fest hat!

Well, that is all for now.

Hugs and Love,
~Namaste~

i think i'm going to buy a small bottle of perfume and leave it up there for the "ladies", as a hospitality gift.

but it's cool! the tile on the floor is original, and we have a big rectangle of carpet in one section only. that's where the bar was.

We have five cases by the city, but it seems it's only mild.

Have you been tempted to take up quilting yet, TJ? Heck, all that fabric and your talking about the beauty of those fabrics is starting to tempt me.

I don't like it. Stop, please!
;)

Tell us about how all the ladies come in with bandaids on every finger!

toujours said...

i'm resisting with all my might, wendy! (but i am making a little log cabin block as a nametag...eep!)

the ladies are all expert quilters -- i'm the one wearing bandaids, and that's from dropping fabric, not stitching it! lol

Takes me back to my very first job, TJ!

Making signs out of flourescent, pvc tubing. I had to cut that tubing with a straight edge razor and crazy glue the tubing on black plexiglass.

My fingers were always cut up,full of glue and bandaided!

Well ladies, it's been fun (again) but I must be off. This was supposed to be a very quick visit!

Say HI to Ergo for me when she gets here!

Goodnight Sweetcheeks, J, TJ, Mayo, SS, lurkers!

Sweet dreams to one and all!

I getcha, TJ, don't worry! Her mom's made a lot of quilts, but it's still not her entire focus. She has lots of other interests as well.

My mom's been saving pieces of material that she made most of my sister's and my clothes out of over the years. She's intended to make quilts for all three of us, but has never gotten around to doing it. I don't think she's going to be able to now, with her bad arthritis and all that. It's a shame, really, because it would've been nice to have the memories all together in one cover.

toujours said...

you know j., if she's still wanting to get that quilt made, you should look into the local quilter's club...those ladies would be happy to make up the quilt using the fabric, or know someone who would, and to your mom's pattern, too.

that's the kind of quilt i like the best, the kind that has a story and family history behind it. i bet there are some local quilters who would love to help out.

but i should be heading off to bed now, too! i still have half a store to reorganize...whew!

talk to you later, j. :)

good night all, and sweet dreams!

Goodnight TJ, and thanks for the info! I'll run it by Mom, see what she thinks.

I'm heading to bed as well, early day tomorrow. Goodnight BC, and Ergo when you get back (I'll catch up with you eventually, I hope!), and Uh, Anon, and everybody else!

Can I treat this place like a journal, oh wait, yes I can. Mayo, SS, both of ya, still freak me out, and I wish you would unmask, because I think it wouldn't be that much different here. I guess I still feel a bit odd man out because I still want to know who you are. Just because I admire the writing and the poetry so much. I want to know where you're from, what formed you, why you can write that way. Why am I still reading this whole time, and thinking about it? I'm just kinda melancholy tonight, and flowing with it, maybe I should sleep outside, I think there was some Ray Bradbury story about that, A Medicine for Meloncholia I think is what it was called. And Slumdog Millionaire is an awesome movie, just saying. Finally watched it tonight, although I actually bought it about three weeks or so back.

mayo,

well, i was going to get into bed early, but then i decided to take a quick look at one of my stories before removing my flash drive.

oops.

some of them are silly, but i'm glad i wrote them down anyway. there are some shining lines in there, even if i do say so myself.

but the upshot is that i really need to turn off this computer pronto, so no long rambly ramble tonight.

but another post, and a poem, and so soon! you're a surprise, mayo. you make me smile.

i don't quite know what to make of it, but when i was reading other's interpretations, the old video game "frogger" popped into my head, for what that's worth...

and i like the first part, about the trail, about it being there and not being there, about it being a trail in time as well as place.

thanks, mayo. it's always good to hear from you. *smile*

good night.

THE AWAKENING

"In the early dawn of happiness
you gave me three kisses
so that I would wake up
to this moment of love

I tried to remember in my heart
what I’d dreamt about
during the night
before I became aware
of this moving
of life

I found my dreams
but the moon took me away
It lifted me up to the firmament
and suspended me there
I saw how my heart had fallen
on your path
singing a song

Between my love and my heart
things were happening which
slowly slowly
made me recall everything

You amuse me with your touch
although I can’t see your hands.
You have kissed me with tenderness
although I haven’t seen your lips
You are hidden from me.

But it is you who keeps me alive

Perhaps the time will come
when you will tire of kisses
I shall be happy
even for insults from you
I only ask that you
keep some attention on me.

anyway, just popping in. i have a cold, headache and achey limbs. atleast it's not swine flu, there was a case reported yesterday about 20 miles from me. great! the child was on the same flight back from Mexico as the Scottish couple who have it. kinda scary isn't it. i just don't want my kids to get it, you just never know with little ones. fingers crossed and all that.

Morning everyone!

Hi Mayo, Nice to see you drop by more often. Taking only your surface reading - come down here! We don't have any snakes at all! That's why most of our native birds are flightless. As for the rest, yeah, well human nature isn't always pretty.
And I probably got that wrong too, because I never took the Mayo Cryptic 101. lol

Far, Sorry you're under the weather. It's tough when you have little ones to care for. It's good news though, they've tracked down the passengers from the Scotttish honeymooners flight!
We've 11 confirmed cases, and over 150 in home quarantine courtesy of students returning from Mexico on an LAX flight. All those passengers have been tracked down too. =)
Clearly it's a fat lot of good relying being on an island to isolate you from disease, these days!

Morning, Socky. Happy Thursday to you too! The Kills are good? *will check them out*

Elena, with Flighty being so rich voiced and talented at this young age now, I can't imagine what she will be like when she reaches her full potential!
And I love her youtube views numbers compared with the other performers. ;)

Diet anon, congratulations sweetie. You sound resolved and determined which is great. But remember, if the extra weight came on over a number of years, take it slow losing it. That is usually more successful in keeping it off and reinforces the permanent change to healthier eating. Quick weight loss fads tend to offer short term results. And don't weigh yourself everyday! Big no-no. I wish you well, and good health. =)

And a very welcome home to L. =)

Goodnight. =)

Mayo-chan!

You totally just wrote a poem about roadkill. Just saying.

Poor snakie. I just love snakes. And now to destroy your well-thought-out metaphor, I have to say I also really like scavengers. What would the world be like without them? Scavengers do the dirty work and they do it gladly.

And by the way, some people term humans "omnivores?" Really we are just opportunistic scavengers. We'll eat any garbage that goes in front of our face, won't we?

Back to the metaphor. ^_^

Nice job, Mayo, as usual.

stuff in italics.

Did that work?

Anonymous said...

Okay, that's it! The trick is to put anything--even a teeny little period--after the italics so that you can space your words.

Except that a teeny little period or even a comma would not have been correct in the case I just demonstrated, you know, when I said after.

But that time it was.

*sigh*

Hey Jules! Hey Mayo! Hey SS!

All this snake talk makes me think of Snakes On A Plane. Hee.

Okay, I have to tell this story. Right after I got married, I was sitting at home one day and my husband comes in from work and is rambling on and on about nothing, as usual. Then he goes, "Oh, shit! I forgot! I have a present for you out in the truck!" I get all excited and start squealing. So he goes out to the truck and comes back in and tells me to close my eyes. Then he says, "Open them!"

-_-

O_O

O_O

O_o

o_O

>.<

A MOTHEREFFIN' SNAKE WAS RIGHT IN MY FACE. I shit you not. I almost died right there. It was a beautiful indigo snake and after I cussed him out and beat on him for a while (^_~) I made him let it go in the back yard.

Gah!

Then, another story. Several years later, he comes beating on the front door so I go and open it like a doofus and guess what was in my face that time. A bleepity-bleepin' rattlesnake. Oh, yes. I never know what to expect when I open the door.

We do have tons of snakes around here. Well, like I said, it's farming country so there are plenty of rats and plenty of snakes to eat the rats.

We have lots of Eastern diamondbacks, cottonmouths or water moccasins, rat snakes, king snakes, and so on and so on. They are very pretty but they scare the shit out of me. I have to watch everywhere I go on the lawn mower. O_O

And lately the rattlesnakes that have been seen around here, basically in my front yard, are in the 4 to 6 foot range and about as big around as a baseball. At least you can see'em coming!

Anyhow! And yeah, I know with Mayo there's a metaphor for everything
and I love how he makes you think about things like that. And I agree Jules, about us being opportunistic scavengers. It's the truth!

Hey you, SS!

How's you today? Have you laughed today? If not, just think about me running through my house trying to get away from my husband and a rattlesnake. He also likes to chase me with frogs and spiders. Boys! >.<

Well, later peeps!

Hey everyone

Just a quick drop-in. Great to see you FASC and Possum. I've missed you guys!

Again, thanks to all who left such lovely comments about Flighty's video. I have to say she was pretty shocked when I talked to her this morning and told her to check out the number of hits. She wanted me to thank all of you for watching the video.

Okay, it's raining cats and dogs here. Has been for days and it's not supposed to stop anytime soon. The yard looks like a swamp. I'm pretty sure I'm starting to prune. Come on sunshine...

Have a great day everyone!

Jennicula said...

Hey Smok! I don't mind snakes so much. Spiders make me lose my shit.

Every year it’s the same routine. My husband gets the yard ready for the summer. He moves things from here to there, throws out junk that appeared to be useful in the fall but have disintegrated into garbage over the winter. The major thing he does is put the chopped wood back onto the stockpile and remove the pool cover.

Without fail he finds casings tucked into various areas of the yard. They’re only from ribbon or garter snakes, so they’re not harmful or that big, but they can startle you quite a bit when you uncover a coiled snake at eye level. He tends to handle snake sightings better than me. I generally run around the yard pointing and yelling, “Snake! Snake!” He backs up calmly and slowly.

During the summer the snakes take a dip in the pool. That’s the only time we interfere with them. They’re quick little suckers zipping along the water and we have to get the skimmer to scoop them out. Once we have them we fling them over the fence to an open field.

I can only imagine what my neighbors think when they see snakes flying through the air and out of my yard. The sight would probably kill my mother.

Jennicula said...

Hey Elena! Sorry you're so soggy. It's supposed to rain here thru next week too. It was a nice respite from the heat, but I'm sure by Saturday I'll be done with the cold and damp.

elena said...

Hey Jen

Good to see ya. I'm working on e-bay at the moment, listening to the rain. It's a beautiful sound I have to admit. But it is indeed cold and damp.

Jennicula said...

I love listening to the rain. I love cozying up with a good book by a fire and having the rain as my background music.

It's good to see you too! :)

The Snakes of September

"All summer I heard them
rustling in the shrubbery,
outracing me from tier
to tier in my garden,
a whisper among the viburnums,
a signal flashed from the hedgerow,
a shadow pulsing
in the barberry thicket.
Now that the nights are chill
and the annuals spent,
I should have thought them gone,
in a torpor of blood
slipped to the nether world
before the sickle frost.
Not so. In the deceptive balm
of noon, as if defiant of the curse
that spoiled another garden,
these two appear on show
through a narrow slit
in the dense green brocade
of a north-country spruce,
dangling head-down, entwined
in a brazen love-knot.
I put out my hand and stroke
the fine, dry grit of their skins.
After all,
we are partners in this land,
co-signers of a covenant.
At my touch the wild
braid of creation
trembles.
"

hi smoke jen k elena

we have too many snakes here :[
and seeing as they are the vast majority of the worlds top 20 venomous land snakes you generally don't want to meet them, though we only have 3 of the top 10 in one commonly given list in our area, the brown (2), taipan (3)and death adder (9), and I have seen all 3 near our home, they are fortunately pretty reclusive. Some snakes are far more dangerous as they come near humans or are very aggressive.
I just hope when we go camping this weekend we don't see any!
But the nonevnomous are lovely, nothing like looking into the iridescent eyes of a huge carpet snake dozing in a sheltered corner, they are so beautiful.

But I was going for a walk one morning and as I cornered a dirt road near us, a brown snake (oh only about 6 foot long :/) came sliding out of the grass to my right ahead. It stopped and put it's head up and looked at me, and I swear the same thought was going through both our heads "SHIT!! What the hell???" we stared at each other a sec then both slowly backed away the way we came. It was a memorable encounter.
Then once I was about to walk to the door of my car and fortunately saw a big brown curled beneath it before I stepped on it, and I had a taipan slide behind me coming out from under our house, as I was stepping backwards...
maybe I should stop before I freak anyone else out lol
honest, australia isn't that full of them, really...

mayo,

i saw two herons tonight, they flew across the road ahead of me on the commute home. herons always look like they are flying in slow motion, their wings moving with a graceful weight. i stared at them for as long as i could see them.

i've never seen two flying together at such close quarters.

they were exactly what i needed to see.

back in my cancer year, i started looking for herons every time i had to go up to the city for treatment. they were my talisman, seeing a heron gliding through the air or perched motionless in a waterway meant the day would go okay.

i saw a heron every day, each chemo, each check-up, each radiation.

it is a very special bird to me.

have a beautiful day tomorrow, mayo. look for signs, participate in the dance of life, sit under a flowering tree, whatever you do, enjoy the day.

good night.

Mayo

For the moment the rain has stopped yet the air is still laden with moisture. No sound of raindrops but the night sings. I have only the light afforded by this monitor the rest of the house is dark. The window is open as is the door leading to the porch. It’s as if I want the night to come inside. Perhaps it is I who want leave this room and become one with the night. The darkness calls to me. My feet long to travel through the rain soaked grass. Yet they are firmly planted on the hardwood floor. There was a time in my life I would have given in to the pull. I would have traveled through the shadows and inhaled the sweet night air. The sounds of the night would have whispered to me. But tonight I stay rooted in this place. Only for the slim chance my name will be called.

Let me break this down. I’d love to go outside and take a long walk. However Stormy is having a crisis (boyfriend troubles) and I have a feeling she might want to talk about it. Now the real bitch of the thing is she probably won’t. But on the off chance she does, I have to be there for her. It’s a mom thing.

Take care, keep your eyes on the road. Always be looking for a nice spot in the road to make a U-Turn. Because life really is a highway and damn it roadblocks always seem to pop up.

Night Mayo
