Well tempered.

“Something with poison in it, but attractive to the eye, and soothing to the smell.”
-Wicked Witch of the West, The Wizard of Oz

Once upon a fork in the road...

In the corner a ratty green sofa sits butted up against a water ring stained end table. There are at least four three inch burn holes in the snagged, stained fabric. Heavy, dark drapes cover the window. The time of day is a complete mystery to anyone who has spent any time here and time is all but spent.

The sofa, the room smells like piss and acid. Pizza boxes, broken plastic forks and unwanted, half-eaten food are surrounded by empty beer bottles and overfilled ash trays. A bent spoon sits on the coffee table.

Around the corner, the kitchen cupboards are bare, the fridge empty. It’s water and anti-acids for dinner; anything else would be a waste.

“Have you seen your family?”

“Well, you should. I know they miss you.”

The visit was brief and I was grateful to have had the opportunity, but for some reason I can’t help but be thankful for decisions I made long ago. I emerged almost unscathed, at least in that respect. I wish there was more I could do.

"Call me if you need anything."

In that dark room past, present and future all at once delivered upon us both, redemption.

"Yeah, I will."

p.s. it is round there aren't any sides.

Sometimes, an offer is the best you can do.

ergoproxy said...

good morning Mayo
How are you?

ergoproxy said...

you really have a way with descriptions, your words bring a very vivid image to mind, and the amount emotion that you can cram into a couple of paragraphs is quite amazing

ergoproxy said...

I don't know if anyone else is about

Smoke said...

Dude, you left me back there again. :)

ergoproxy said...

oh hi smoke I just went back to see if anyone was about

ergoproxy said...

I like our title too Mayo, it is the hardship we deal with that forges us

ergoproxy said...

Mayo only you know when you should take them up on their offer too
just don't forget they've made it

Smoke said...

Yeah, I was still on the other one. Ha.

Mayo,

You just described the house that my husband lived in when he was seventeen. He had been kicked out of his parents' house for using his father's beer cooler one afternoon without asking.

Smoke said...

3:33, eh? Ha.

ergoproxy said...

gosh smoke that's a bit harsh!

Smoke said...

Yeah, it was harsh. I was there when it happened, too. Crazy. Things have changed a bit since then but it's hard for him to forget that, ya know?

sister midnite said...

Hi Mayo, thought I'd say hello before the blog turns to shit. In spite of that, thanks again for keeping it open.

ergoproxy said...

Mayo do you get scared if you're driving in a thunderstorm?
U was pretty damn scared last night!

ergoproxy said...

HI SisM,

you never know how the blog will go, "some days are diamonds, some days are stone"

Smoke said...

I mean I

unless U was scared last night too

this is the point I need to make coffee

ergoproxy said...

Smoke said...

Gah! People keep calling me. You'd think I was at work or something.

Mayo,

Thank you for the new post. I'll be back with more later! :)

I know the feeling of wanting and wishing you could do more. I know exactly how that feels.

Okay, later folks!

ok back to your regulary planned programming....

ergoproxy said...

how are you anon?

ergoproxy said...

hello Jen
I agree with you, the offer should be made, even if it isn't accepted straight away. You may never know when they'll realise they need it

ergoproxy said...

now I've realised I can read it as you are in the room, and as you are the visitor
or they could both be you

whoever you are speaking of, I hope they can come out of their situation a stronger and better person

mya said...

I'm afraid, the person from your past that you visited needs more than what you are capable of offering.

I had a friend like that. She passed away last year.

ergoproxy said...

maybe I should just stop talking, seems I'm all alone.
Sorry I don't have much in the way of deep insight at the moment Mayo, it's kinda hard when you've just woken up.

and maybe I have somehow absorbed some of MJ's blog killing ability!

I think this qoute really suits some people here. Dont you?

ergoproxy said...

actually this just brought a memory back to me

I used to volunteer with Meals on Wheels when I was at Uni, I'd be paired with an older lady (they were all older) and we'd load up meals and take them to the homes of the elderly. Now one house I'd been to a couple of times was in an older suburb and when the old frail man answered the door it was so dark and cluttered with big wooden cabinets and piles of papers, and it smelt bad. He spoke very little, would take the containers from us and disappear back inside. This one occasion we went inside a little, I realised the cabinets had collections of stuffed birds, like museum pieces and loving that sort of thing I told the man how lovely they were, though they were totally caked with dust. Well his eyes lit up and he said "would you like to see my birds?" I said I'd love to and he led us through these darkened rooms and to the back of the house, which was a long room kitchen to the right with clean sunfilled windows and all long the walls at the left were cages of finches and canaries and all sorts of beautiful coloured little birds, all clean and well kept. He was so proud of them and spoke with such delight. It was so fantastic to see that the impression we had from the front was so different to reality.
It was one of the most special moments.
Though we had some homes on the rounds that were so neglected, and the elderly within. They were all happy to see us though, some even passing over candy, like we were kids. Then you'd get in the car and look at the route folder and see a page missing, the old person passed away, and it was always sad to drive past the homes, but at least we knew that we had, in a small but important way cared for them in their time of need.

farawaysoclose said...

it is fasc
and thanks Mya

it is a really important service, it's run by the Uniting Church and relies on volunteers, donations and some govt funding. You just never realise how many older people have no one to care for them, we at least knew they had a good meal once a day
We'd pack them all in the mornings, it was a container with meat and veges, an urn of soup (that I always got to carry being the "young one") and a dessert

ergoproxy said...

When you see a fork in the road - take it.

Anonymous said...

How fresh like frilled linen clean from a laundry laid in wicker trays the roses looked; and dark and prim the red carnations, holding their heads up; and all the sweet peas spreading in their bowls, tinged violet, snow white, pale--as if it were the evening and girls in muslin frocks came out to pick sweet peas and roses after the superb summer's day, with its almost blue-black sky, its delphiniums, its carnations its arum lilies was over; and it was the moment between six and seven when every flower--roses, carnations, irises, lilac--glows; white, violet, red, deep orange; every flower seems to burn by itself, softly, purely in the misty beds . . . . .

ergoproxy said...

When you see a fork in the road - take it.

"Well tempered" means that the twelve notes per octave of the standard keyboard are tuned in such a way that it is possible to play music in most major or minor keys and it will not sound perceptibly out of tune. In most tuning systems used before 1700, one or more intervals on the twelve-note keyboard were so far from any pure interval that they were unusable in harmony and were called a "wolf".

elena said...

See ya later, K

This post is simplistic in form, has double meaning in a couple of verses(IMO). You get the picture immediately and your heart swells with wonder, caring and sorrow.

You can only do so much. The rest is up to the other person (or people)
Thank You Mayo for these insights.

Hello, Good bye and hugs to you all!

mya said...

And then there's...

A coin which featured a red poppy was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, an organization that makes Canadian cash as well as currencies for other countries. The Mint, which is definitely worth a tour if you're in Ottawa, won an award for the coin. The coin was issued to honour Canadian war dead; the poppy is the symbol of the Royal Canadian Legion.

And then, of course, there is...

A round table is one which has no "head" and no "sides", and therefore no one person sitting at it is given a privileged position and all are treated as equals.

Hence, the term "round table" is also used figuratively to refer to a peaceful way of achieving a compromise solution.

ergoproxy said...

well there you go Mya! Tempered means quite a few things

ergoproxy said...

when you temper steel it is after it has been quenched, or heated and the rapidly cooled by dipping in water or oil but that makes it brittle
so you reheat it and cool it again and that makes it more flexible
so you get a stronger steel but with some flexibility so it doesn't crack with wear

mya said...

Damn it! My bread is going to be ruined!

No, not because it is going to turn out like a hockey puck! But, because I have no REAL butter in the house!

Curses!

and in chocolate it is taken up to 45C then cooled to 27C then heated to 31C then it becomes workable and glossy and crisp when cooled rather than crumbling

Hello Mayo,SS,Lovelies and Anons.

Thanks for sharing this,Mayo.

I’ve been there too,you know.
Actually, that room was my home for almost an year.
The furniture was a bit different, the sofa was quite comfortable and old pictures were strewn all over the floor, but surely alcohol and cigarettes were not missing.
It was different, but it was the same thing.

And it helped,Mayo.
Knowing somebody was there for me when I needed a friend the most, helped.
It took me a while, but eventually I was able to gather all my things and leave.

And what you’ve done is really important,Mayo.
Never doubt it.

Hope you’re okay.Take care.

it actually feels different having a capital on my name, and that is really odd, why should it feel different?

And SDock and Smoke!

Mya I do cheat and use a bread mix, but I knead it myself and all
I just find it turns out better than the machine does.
I found a really good flour mix called Lauke, don't know if you'd get it over there though

Gah! Edward Norton is following me!

The TV is on behind me and I wasn't paying attention, but I turned around and there is Edward Norton again! The Italian Job.

Ergo, I have used a mix once or twice, but I can't remember the name of it.
I've gotten a slew of recipes off the internet lately and I've been slowly trying them out.

I use the bread machine to do the kneading and first rise.

Yeah, I don't think I like these capitals... It makes it feel too formal or something...
