Dig into her.

Of all the translations of Charles Baudelaire's Rêve parisien that I have read, this version is my favorite.

Parisian Dream

I

That marvelous landscape of my dream —
Which no eye knows, nor ever will —
At moments, wide awake, I seem
To grasp, and it excites me still.

Sleep, how miraculous you are —
A strange caprice had urged my hand
To banish, as irregular,
All vegetation from that land;

And, proud of what my art had done,
I viewed my painting, knew the great
Intoxicating monotone
Of marble, water, steel and slate.

Staircases and arcades there were
In a long labyrinth, which led
To a vast palace; fountains there
Were gushing gold, and gushing lead.

And many a heavy cataract
Hung like a curtain, — did not fall,
As water does, but hung, compact,
Crystal, on many a metal wall.

Tall nymphs with Titan breasts and knees
Gazed at their images unblurred,
Where groves of colonnades, not trees,
Fringed a deep pool where nothing stirred.

Blue sheets of water, left and right,
Spread between quays of rose and green,
To the world's end and out of sight,
And still expanded, though unseen.

Enchanted rivers, those — with jade
And jasper were their banks bedecked;
Enormous mirrors, dazzled, made
Dizzy by all they did reflect.

And many a Ganges, taciturn
And heedless, in the vaulted air,
Poured out the treasure of its urn
Into a gulf of diamond there.

As architect, it tempted me
To tame the ocean at its source;
And this I did, — I made the sea
Under a jeweled culvert course.

And every color, even black,
Became prismatic, polished, bright;
The liquid gave its glory back
Mounted in iridescent light.

There was no moon, there was no sun, —
For why should sun and moon conspire
To light such prodigies? — each one
Blazed with its own essential fire!

A silence like eternity
Prevailed, there was no sound to hear;
These marvels all were for the eye,
And there was nothing for the ear.

II

I woke; my mind was bright with flame;
I saw the cheap and sordid hole
I live in, and my cares all came
Burrowing back into my soul.

Brutally the twelve strokes of noon
Against my naked ear were hurled;
And a gray sky was drizzling down
Upon this sad, lethargic world.

— Edna St. Vincent Millay, Flowers of Evil (NY: Harper and Brothers, 1936)

I personally think it's ridiculous that some of you are so elitist over a fucking internet blog.

It's pathetic really.

People are only coming in being disruptive because they know it sets you all off so easily. Mature? No. Easily fixable by pulling your heads out of your asses? Yes.

You're right, last anon on the last page. The anons would accuse Mayo of lying or they would just fucking attack the dude for speaking on HIS OWN GOSH DARN BLOG. I don't blame the guy for never stopping by for longer than a fucking minute.

Thanks BC. I hope the sleep helps. Sweet dreams to you too dear.

I want to know why the anons have come to the conclusion that Amy has cleaned this blog from certain people. They say it over and over. I know they may be putting words in her mouth, but i don't see her correcting them.I know she posted The FIX and since then the anons took that and ran with it.She might have meant well, but it seems to me that she would say something to them..unless she likes all this mess. That is how it looks. I hope i am wrong.

11:49, people have been putting words in my mouth for a long time, even prior to The Fix's writing.

I have posted asking the Anons to not repost it over and over again, and they have stopped.

However, like anyone else here, I can't tell the Anons to stop posting opinions. They have theirs, I have mine. I've offered my opinions, and they're offering theirs.

*Opinion Alert!*

I do think it's excessive though, but that's Mayo's fix to make, not mine.

Now, if there is a message in it pertaining to him, I don't know.

But I don't think it's dignity.

If I disagree, I'm a cunt, a bitch, a destroyer, a ruiner, a fucking loser, a hypocrite, and again, whatever they can come up with.

I knew people would agree, I knew people would disagree.

Does that change anything? No.

What do you want from me? Do you even know?

Allow me to tell you, AGAIN, what exactly was intended.

I intended to share my opinion of things on my own blog. In doing this, people clearly lost sight of the reason WHY I wrote what I wrote. I wrote what I felt, I wrote what I've heard, I wrote what I saw, I wrote it all.

If this makes me an evil, vile, despicable creature in YOUR eyes, so be it.

You've placed me on a throne, atop a pedestal higher than Mayo's. Thanks for the crown, I wear it well.

This is your own doing, whether YOU like it or not.

Mayo

Thanks for the new post and thanks for sharing something that you enjoy with us. So it suddenly dawned on me that I had something I wanted to share with you. It’s a drawing that I found years ago in a Flea Market in St Joe, Mo. It was up on the third floor of this huge old building that housed the market and when I found it I just fell in love. This drawing is a Victorian era work that is done in charcoal. The truly neat thing is that the canvas is actually sandpaper. For a while back then this was a popular trend. Anyway, I want to show you a picture of it. Please keep in mind that the actual work is much more lovely in person. Taking a photo of a work that is framed under glass is never easy but I’ve done my best. Now it the Clicky Link God will just smile on me tonight all will be well with the world.

Victorian Drawing

Well that’s really all I have for tonight. Hope things in your world are going well. So have you given any thought to writing that Halloween short story for us? Yeah, I’m bugging you but then really when don’t I?

Night Mayo

Elena (wonder if you can finger paint on sandpaper?)

That is because it was posted on her own blog and someone took it upon themselves to post it over here. She asked them to stop.

1:13 it is unfair to everyone who has ever had anything of that kind happen to them and the fact things have occurred in the past doesn't mean that it should be continued on in the future, and that is what is happening, and unless everyone, anons and blues included are able to act in a way which prevents it occurring at this blog over and over again, then the person may change but the effect will not.

Since no one is harassing, only giving opinions like Amyranth did, then I can't answer the question.

You gave yourself away with this comment, anon, but I will keep that to myself. I will rephrase the question. See the first 1:19 comment.

My solution will be to read the other blog which I find to be fair minded and balanced.

Yin and Yang.

Poetry and fun.

As for this blog I just think it is sad... unbalanced.

I wish it would go back to the way it was but it doesn't seem like it.

TJ I think the worm quote says it all, short, concise and confusing, it would be a taking point!

Here how about this. I have a blog that I don't really use anymore all the anons can take it to the Vanilla Death blog. But you can't bring it back here.

It makes people not want to be here I already know of at least 3 people who are sick of it and don't feel like coming back.

Anonymous said...

SWA

If you really like the Porchies, stop saying they are the only ones here who count and that they should be back because the blog is dead without them. You are not helping them, either.

It is a shame EP. It used to be a fair place.

Anonymous said...

I didn't say they are the ONLY ones.

Show me one time I said they were the ONLY ones.

They were important to this place though. The things they said have been going on for over a year. And all of a sudden it's a problem.

That doesn't seem right.

Anonymous said...

I know several who don't want to come back, Martha Jones. At least 3 of them would come back if the anon fighting would stop.

Many things don't seem right. It's not right that Amyranth gets harrassed daily. It's not right that OPJ has had some of the most horrible things said about her by anons. It's not right that there are bloggers gone that WANT to be here but can't deal with all the bullshit everyday against a handful of people.

I was looking at text too, but haven't decided if I want to, or have another pic

Martha Smith-Jones said...

Anon does it seem right that when ever you come on people are doing things that may make others feel like they don't want to have anything to do with the others.

Over this year a lot of shit has gone down some of it private some public. But how will any of it get resolve if you keep bring it up and shoving it in our faces. No I didn't like the way kapu threaded CTV and i didn't like how Amy dealt with it, But it was anons who real made it shit. NOT ALL ANONS.

oh, ergo, i'll definitely tell you...will probably bug you for your opinion on my choice, too!

i have an image i want already, but the text tattoo is an idea i've been enamored of for a few years now. actually, it was when i saw a picture of frank that showed his wrist tattoo -- it had never occurred to me you could have words tattooed on you. lol

i love the way his tattoo looked like a bracelet of words. i've wanted something akin to that ever since.

TJ my cousin has a line of poetry on her foot, running down the top from ankle toward her toes
I'd never seen it in that spot but looks quite good. I would get text on my feet, I just like the idea of having tattoos on the sides of my feet

Hey here is a thought…..how about a back to basics approach. Yeah, that’s right kindergarten people. Credit goes to Robert Fulghum.

· Share everything.
· Play fair.
· Don't hit people.
· Put things back where you found them.
· Clean up your own mess.
· Don't take things that aren't yours.
· Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
· Wash your hands before you eat.
· Flush.
· Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
· Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.
· Take a nap every afternoon.
· When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together.
· Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: the roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.
· Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup - they all die. So do we.
· And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned - the biggest word of all - LOOK.
Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and politics and equality and sane living.(and blog co-exsistance)

Goodnight everyone

good night martha.

i read about someone who had an symbol tattooed on the bottom of their foot, ergo. i think it was the alchemical symbol for earth, or maybe a rune...it was a pagan thing though, whatever the symbol was because the intent was to remind that person that they made a vow to walk gently on the earth.

my image i want in a very stereotypical place for a tattoo, on my upper arm, along the bicep, where i can see it. i was thinking text on the meat of the forearm,to balance the image acros the crook of the arm...

i think having poetry on you is a wonderful idea, though.

ergoproxy said...

elena that is lovely!

but does that mean one of us has to take the sheep and stuff home over the vacations?

I always wanted
"I don't want the world, I just want your half"

or

"to make the merry-go-round go faster
so that everybody has to hang on tighter
just to keep from being thrown to the wolves"
(but that's a bit long)

toujours said...

thank you for the reminders, elena. i always liked his little book. :)

ergo, that first line is cute, especially if you put it close to your hand (grabby grabby!)

i think the second selection -- lyrics? -- wouldn't be too much if it was arranged appropriately. it's nice though.

ergoproxy said...

I was actually thinking of getting it on the inside edge of each foot, "I don't want the world" on the right and "I just want your half" on the left

I like the other , it's one of my fave lines, they are both from They Might Be Giants songs, Anna Ng and They might Be Giants (the song)

toujours said...

oh, that's why they were familiar! i hvaen't listened to they might be giants for quite some time, but i love them. their sense of humor...their songs never fail to make me giggle, and they are so clever!

i can actually see those lines on your feet, you know. they would work very well there.

Petty.

Irresponsible.

Not solving anything -to argue relentlessly.

Now it's not just the BLUES Not Getting Along, it's ANONS as well. Why? What is the point? Words (poem's, quotes and jokes included) cannot hurt Anyone -Unless the person posting is imply as such. Note that.

It really has nothing to do with anything. It's just everyone finding something small and inconsequencial to throw at another. Again. And again. And again.

Why do you all do this? What do any of you (blue or anon alike) gain from this fighting back and forth? What do you gain from this?

Why can't everyone just get along?

How absurd that it came to this. Does no one see that? Does no one see how completely useless all this negativity is? Fighting and fighting and fighting some more. It does nothing to better the situation.

Why can't EVERYONE just for one small day, An Hour, try to say something civil to another. Even if you don't know them. Even if don't want too. Just try it once. Say something nice. Something small... "I hope you are enjoying your evenning.." See how it makes you feel.

Please.

This monstrous behavior can't go on. And it is embarassing just to read it. I thought so much better of everyone. Blue and Anon, alike.

Please try, everyone. One nice little comment to each person you encounter, just for a moment even. If it is only one nice comment in a sea of ugly cruel words -do you not think it would be worth the effort?

Please. This is just getting ridiculous. And it hurts to see it here, where such friendships used to dwell.

mayo,

reading this poem, it brings to mind the tomb of the first emperor of china. have you read about it? it's the one wherein they discovered all those terracotta warriors, guarding the emperor in death.

what is also said about the tomb is that it had an amazing map room, a replica of his empire complete with constellations on the ceiling and rivers made of mercury. archaeologists have measured a high level of mercury there, so perhaps it's even true.

this poem is almost like a description of what i imagine that tomb must look like. not exactly, of course, but it makes me think of all those worlds we try to hang on to, the xanadus, the way the city in the distance is always more pure and more lovely than the city from within its streets.

you know, when i said that your title was startling earlier, i merely meant because it's so visceral. i actually like it. it's how i approach certain books. i'll take your advice, mayo. you haven't steered me wrong yet. i'm a better reader and a better writer because of you, because of your blog.

you are indeed a lovely light, my friend.

good night, and may your tomorrow be a day of small, sparkling joys.

TJ - I am checking out Will's sonnets now that I know thee is a direct object (singular) and thou is the subject form. So thanks for that. :)

Wendy - I hope you continue to feel better - and my niece smiled sheepishly when the hug was delivered. :) I am afraid she is almost a teen! :)

I second elena's words above, as I did yesterday.

RE: the post:
Thanks for the post Mayo. I enjoy poetry when it gives me a glimpse of what another sees. Art (of all forms) allows us to see the world from another's view - or to share our perspective with others, as the case may be. The subject of sleep and dreams triggers all sorts of associated thoughts.

That marvelous landscape of my dream —
Which no eye knows, nor ever will —
At moments, wide awake, I seem
To grasp, and it excites me still.

When I do remember dreams of beautiful imagery. My memory always includes the complexity of emotion invoked. In fact, its often more powerful than the vision.

Sometimes (rarely) I have precognitive dreams.

They are so powerful they wake me from a sound sleep. I puzzle over what action to take, and plan for it, before I can sleep again.

I wonder if others experience this?

Anyway, thank you for the post.

:) Have a good weekend everyone!

Good morning/afternoon/night Mayo, SS, Ergo, Sweetcheeks, TJ, Elena, Paperheart, Amy, Martha, SWA, Fimble Star; the possibly next to arrive FASC, Possum, Miranth, Kass (we can hope) or Sdock; various anons, watchers and lurkers; all Charles Baudelaire and/or Charles Bukowski enthusiasts in the land o'blogbelieve!

How are you all this morning? Delighted, dexterous and feeling quite divine, I hope!

*the letter D brought to you ~ by me ~ today, simply because I did the letter C yesterday*

Don't worry. I won't do the letter E tomorrow. Well, I probably won't! ;)

Mayo: Thank you for the poem. Charles Baudelaire is an excellent choice! I like him! I think one good Charles B. deserves another. **Please see below!

Elena: How are the kittens? I didn't miss their pictures, did I? I haven't properly caught up yet. *blushes*

Sweetcheeks: CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Another perfect score for you. And, once again, you are at the top of the class. Your total score of 616(8) is unprecedented. I think I'm going to have to give you an entire planet this time...
complete with a full wardrobe befitting the ruler (of an entire planet)! ;)

Ergo: How's titoring going? Are you enjoying being back in the school environment a bit more?

HI WENDY!

:)

And I hope we see Kass, too!

PS - "Dig into her." refers to the poem, anons.

As in, dig into the Poem.

Not people.

I recognize that mayo likes the double entendre, but damn!

farawaysoclose said...

good morning mayo!

thank you for sharing one of your favourite poems with us. i have never read it before, but it was beautiful.

weirdly though i kind of like the second part even more.

I woke; my mind was bright with flame;
I saw the cheap and sordid hole
I live in, and my cares all came
Burrowing back into my soul.

that kind of hits hard doesn't it.

Brutally the twelve strokes of noon
Against my naked ear were hurled;
And a gray sky was drizzling down
Upon this sad, lethargic world.

and that also.
hey i wish i could sleep in til 12 noon!! i thought clearly this man had no children!!

so i googled him and his is a sad and troubled story. as is often the case with people with obvious artistic gifts. tortured souls.

and i couldn't help but notice his birth date is the same date as Gerard Way's!! coincidence? i think not! ^_~

totally being silly there sorry mayo!

ok so thank you very much, i have learnt something new and that is all good!

and i guess you are recommending us to dig into Edna St. Vincent Millay? well i will do. i am sure it will beat reading Podiatric pain management which i have been avoiding of late!!

and i just can't fail to mention how uncomfortable i felt reading through the comments on this new blog this morning.

i am sorry you have to put up with shit like that. i am sorry that anyone has to put up with shit like that. just really disrespectful. and yeah it's only a blog but i think a little respect for others in general would go a long way.

oh and last thing mayo!! it's friday again!! seriously that is the quickest ever week i think!! did it fly for you also?

Mayo,

Again, thank you for this space, thank you for your time, thank you for the new post.

And again, sorry for all the bullshit, sorry for all the chaos, sorry for this mess.

Have a great Friday! I'm pretty sure it's going to be one of my get lost in my own head kind of days, but really, is that any different than yesterday or the day before?

Nah, except, maybe today I'll find something in there worth writing down.

Love to YOU Always,

p.s. Wondering if I ever dig deep enough.
