The day after the day after tomorrow.

I arrived suddenly, and knew for certain that I was in the best place. It was warm and calm and I stood quietly in the moment, waiting for my turn. But, I quickly realized I was alone. Figuring my wait would be short; I let out a breath releasing the smoke from my lungs and viewed my new environment. All around me the black tar covered ground seemed endless, as if I stood in the parking lot for the world’s demise. Its emptiness ran undisturbed to the limits of my sight, and I thought, “When does it all get here?” Then, as I dropped my spent cigarette to the ground, intending to snub it out with the toe of my boot, something caught my eye.

At the hem of my faded, old black shirt was a white thread and without reflection I pulled it. As I pulled, it continued to reveal itself. So I continued to pull, believing that my shirt would soon unravel. But instead, my shirt remained intact while the string started to wind around itself, twining, until it became as thick as a hangman’s rope. With both my hands I began to work against gravity to slow it down, but it quickly stole my grip allowing the rope to spill out, coiling at my feet. When it stopped its fall, the weight of it almost pulled me over and I realized it must be connected to me. I pulled up my shirt and discovered it cleanly attached to the center of my chest.

Then I noticed smoke coming up from the center of the pile and realized the rope had coiled itself around my still lit cigarette. I frantically began to kick at the rope, fearing that it would fuse its way to my heart, igniting it. My success gave way to alarm as I heard from behind me the approaching sound of children’s laughter. When I turned, they were upon me. Several of them grabbed the rope and ran past me. As I watched the rope begin to take off I grabbed for it, but it slipped in my hand. When it disconnected from my chest I fell to the ground and grabbed for its end, but it trailed off behind them, leaving an inky trace.

I remained on my knees. A dull pain echoed in my chest as I watched the children huddle together holding hands to ears, whispering. Several of them looked over at me, but quickly returned to their attention to the group. I felt like an idiot. Oddly, they seemed unfazed by my presence and began to jump rope, their laughter in time with its swooshing rhythm. So, I asked them “Don’t you know you’re playing with the end of me?” My reply came in the most unexpected way, as the smallest of all the children approached me with the seeping end of the rope, smiled and said, “It’s your turn.”

p.s. I’m always fucking late.

wow TJ I love all the stories like that

i always wonder how much volition ghost have, you know? you hear about ghosts who just seem to be repeating a pattern, like something they did when they were alive maybe, and then there are those that seems curious about the people in their places, or mischievious, or malicious, but interactive.

i've read that some ghosts are just strong memories impressed upon a place, strong enough to linger for years.

i don't know, but the thought of them being still something with a self-awareness, that's what gives me the chills.

ergoproxy said...

yes I hear some stories which appear to just be re-enacting a past event, then others seem to be sentient. But you don't know how much they know, do they actually mind still being there?

toujours said...

have you ever read le joux sont fait by sartre? it was one of the books we read in french class, and it follows the protagonist into the afterlife. he discovers that no one has gone anywhere, there's no heaven or hell, or anything like that. the dead are all in spirit form, but still in the world with us, hanging around, watching us. it's almost like the greek view of the afterlife, with everyone just wandering aorund without purpose, except they wander here with us.

like, every room in every building has a dozen ghosts in it. just hangin out. bored but having nothing better to do than watch us live our lives.

creepy as fuck.

well, you can tell it's been a long time since i had frech. i just double-checked my spelling of the title, and it was completely wrong. *faceplam*

the title is actually les jeux sont faits. madamoiselle malloy would be very disappointed with me if she knew.

I haven't TJ but it sounds like an interesting concept

like the movie Truly Madly Deeply, have you seen that?

ergoproxy said...

eh just leave it, sometimes it's just too much bother

i have seen that movie, ergo. loved it. :)

sartre's book is more depressing. we read nausea, too. i don't know what she was thinking, giving teenagers that stuff. lol

ergoproxy said...

wow, exposing you to the classics! Just the rather deep depressing ones

toujours said...

well, we read le petit prince too, so maybe she thought that would balance it? the best book we read in that class was le comte de monte cristo. that was fun -- we put on plays from that one. :)

i'm afraid i have to go to bed now, ergo. :(

mayo,

you know, last year i wasn't able to celebrate hallow's eve. it was just too much to go through the photo albums, too much to think that now i could only talk to my dad through the veil. i hid from the holiday, i truly did.

this year it's not so raw, though i'm not really in a situation where i can set up a full-blown ancestor altar! but i think i'm going to do a little something anyway. and maybe that's good, that i'm forced to scale-down. lets me dip my toe in, so to speak.

it'll be a good night for divination, too, if you're so inclined. scrying is best on hallow's. take a black dish, like a ceramic saucer or a glass plate, and fill it with water just to the point of almost overfilling it. the water should brim up, just a little, over the edge. no need for a crystal ball, you see. place a candle to the side, so its light doesn't reflect off the surface, and look down into it.

don't look too hard, though! no frowny faces when scrying, you use a looser sort of concentration, similar to the kind when you stand back from a painting to see what is needed next.

have fun, the future is malleable, so anything you see is just a suggestion, anyway.

or, you know, just eat a lot of candy corn. *grin*

good night, mayo, my friend.

Happy Halloween!!!

Due to a raving headache last night I missed so much. I’m sorry if I missed something I needed to address but here, for now, is what I want to say.

Wendy – I am so sorry for your loss. I can’t begin to imagine waking up to that kind of horror. I know how much you must miss your brother. I’m giving you a huge hug. Love ya.

Ergo – Great story. Thanks for sharing it with us. Chills O-Plenty!

TJ – Sorry we didn’t get to chat much last night. Talk to ya soon, Shirl.

WHOOP WHOOP!

For some of us, this is the biggest holiday of the year! :D Gosh, no, I'm not talking about Fiero's birthday (although the dude is, what, 27 today? Good on him! So young and so accomplished and such an inspiration to people!) Happy birthday to Fiero! I think he deserves a new car! I picked orange and black because how could you not?

For everyone on Halloween, two of my favorites: Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King! Everyrone loves Jack!

And truly my favorite, my ideal, my first crush, Gomez Addams. Gosh, why can't I find a guy like that? I'd snap him up in a second. (Especially as he was played by the beautiful Raul Julia.

What's everyone doing today? I don't know what I'm doing. I was supposed to go to the Kung Fu school to help set up, but I don't know. It's my holiday, man! Then I get to see Boychild in his first Halloween costume. Then I'll probably stay here and answer the door all night. ^_^

Well, I hope you all have a spooky, creepy, chilly, awesome Halloween / Samhain. :D

Oh, Princess? Your kid scared the hell out of me. O_O

We would never have left the house! And who the hell gets $20.00 for trick or treating? Who? My son! Gah! As if!

OMG, I just reread my comment from this morning and WTH was I on?

Gatorage = Gatorade

Bananberry = Bananaberry

Crazy, right? Crazy. O_O

I wanna go home and watch scary movies all day! Damn it man! Halloween should so be a national holiday. >_<

Happy Halloween

With Halloween upon us, it is worthwhile to remember a few simple rules to help keep us all healthy, happy and SAFE!

01. When it appears that you have killed the monster, NEVER check to see if it's really dead.

02. Never read a book of demon summoning aloud, even as a joke.

03. Do not search the basement, especially if the power has gone out.

04. If your children speak to you in Latin or any other language which they should not know, shoot them immediately. It will save you a lot of grief in the long run. However, it will probably take several rounds to kill them, so be prepared. This also applies to kids who speak with somebody else's voice.

05. When you have the benefit of numbers, NEVER pair off and go alone.

06. As a general rule, don't solve puzzles that open portals to Hell.

07. Never stand in, on, or above a grave, tomb, or crypt. This would apply to any other house of the dead as well.

08. If appliances start operating by themselves, do not check for short circuits; just get out.

09. If you find a town which looks deserted, there's probably a good reason for it. Don't stop and look around.

10. Don't fool with recombinant DNA technology unless you're sure you know what you're doing.

11. If you're running from the monster, expect to trip or fall down at least twice, more if you are female. Also note that, despite the fact that you are running and the monster is merely shambling along, it's still moving fast enough to catch up with you.

12. If your companions suddenly begin to exhibit uncharacteristic behavior such as hissing, fascination for blood, glowing eyes, increasing hairiness, and so on, kill them immediately.

13. Stay away from certain geographical locations, some of which are listed here: Amityville, Elm Street, Transylvania, Nilbog (you're in trouble if you recognize this one), anywhere in Texas where chainsaws are sold, the Bermuda Triangle, or any small town in Maine.

14. If your car runs out of gas at night on a lonely road, do not go to the nearby deserted-looking house to phone for help. If you think that it is strange you ran out of gas because you thought you had most of a tank, shoot yourself instead. You are going to die anyway, and most likely be eaten.

15. Beware of strangers bearing tools. For example: chainsaws, staple guns, hedge trimmers, electric carving knives, combines, lawnmowers, butane torches, soldering irons, band saws, or any devices made from deceased companions.

16. Do not mention the names of demons around open flames, as these can flare suddenly. Be especially careful of fireplaces in this regard.

17. Do not go looking for witches in the Maryland countryside.

SLIPPERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

best footwear ever!

Anonymous said...

Hi, Ergo!

And let me tell you, slippers really are the greatest thing ever. Slippers, slipper socks, big fuzzy and huge; there's nothing like them. ^_^

Today I went to the new KF school and I only carted a few big items down there, like some bags and a staff rack. Sifu was kinda pretty much "meh, let's do this tomorrow and have lunch instead," so Sifu took me to lunch, which was nice of him. There we talked about the plans for the new school, stuff about the old school, politics and other stuff. This school and this heritage belong to Sifu but he subcontracted it to a lady who is a mistress of the Kung Fu and who became one of my closes and most beloved friends. She ended up getting terribly sick and had to give the school back to him, but business was confusing and neither of them were clear on who should be paying what to whom (and i don't understand that stuff either) and they had the biggest, most ugly falling-out and haven't spoken since.

Anyway, Sifu told me that they were, at one point, just going to shut the school down a few years ago. "But then," he said, "I went into her school and saw the group she had attracted there and, well... you're all so weird and I just fell in love with you all and I wanted to keep everybody, so I couldn't close the school."

He's a weird dude. He comes across all tough but sometimes I wonder.

I saw some cool costumes when I was out. Me, I was just wearing my witchy stripy getup and shiny purple shoes and batwing ankh sunglasses etc. Once I came home, I dug out my Sally costume. It's been so many years since I've been Sally and I just wanted to see if I could still pull it off. it's cool, the kids who come to the door love it and recognize it easily.

Havoc is really weird today. He's being the biggest cuddlemuffin he's ever been since he was a wee little fledgling. He spent about an hour trying to snuggle into my hair and asking to be petted. Hmm, I definitely think that crows are seeing things that we humans miss! :)

Now, I'm just waiting on more trick or treaters and waiting to see te Boychild. :)

Hope you're all having a great holiday!

Grrrr.....!!

Smoke,

Turn your head when the clown scene comes on in Poltergeist!

Anonymous said...

Poltergeist is such a great movie. One of my favorites.

Whoop whoop! I got lots of trick or treaters but I think they're done now. The kids in this neighborhood love coming to my door; they say it's like a haunted maze and they always remember it year after year. They used to be amazed to see Pendragon, my 4 foot iguana in the sunroom when they went into the backyard, and now they are delighted to see Havoc in there. But even up until last year some kids asked me if "that silver lizard" was still anywhere around. He was kinda green, kinda blue, kinda orange, kinda silver.

I lit a candle for him tonight and one for Trisky, of course. I lit one each for each of my grandparents who are gone, one each for each of my cousins who are gone (four of them, all between the ages of two and 40 something,) some for my friends who are gone, and then I ran out of candles. O_O So I thought of ones I knew less, like aunts and uncles and such. I think just shouting them out is decent enough, right?

I'm telling you. My crow knows something. O_O

Oops, wtf? More trick or treaters! They're out late!

Anonymous said...

Late revelers! "Hey, you're almost out of candy. How about you just give the rest to us!" OMG nervy little punks! ^_^ You gotta give them credit for trying.

ergoproxy said...

sdock that is the one thing that annoys me about that show, they go on too much even in the normal hour episodes sometimes, like I don't care if they aren't getting on that day as someone was late arriving, just find something spooky!!!!

Mr. Gordy! Shudder indeed! Keep watching! It gets better!

GAH!!

who buys an abandoned house without finding out why!!!!

sdock10 said...

Okay, so I'm done watching this Ghost Hunters thing. It's got 5 more hours and I think I'll just go to bed now.

Did I mention I am in my bedroom typing with the lights on because I'm kind of scared a little. Yep, must've been the growly "You're not supposed to be here" voice that got me.

And now I have Mr. Gordy in my head and the clown from Poltergeist!!!!

GAHHHH!

Happy Halloween, guys!

Night Night!

sdock10 said...

Mayo,

Boo!

Gets you every fucking time, I know!

Muhahhahh!

Just don't let me dream of that growly man voice, Mr. Gordy, or the clown from Poltergeist!

You still check under your bed and in your closet, right?

Uh huh, that's what I thought.

Happy Halloween, Mayo!

Love to YOU Always,
S

p.s. BOO!

Great shoes, K!!

As we're married, I think it only fair that I get half of them. Or both of them, half of the time.

Oh hell, just give them to me! And remember, if it doesn't hurt, it isn't love!

Hallowe'en in a Suburb

The steeples are white in the wild moonlight,
And the trees have a silver glare;
Past the chimneys high see the vampires fly,
And the harpies of upper air,
That flutter and laugh and stare.
For the village dead to the moon outspread
Never shone in the sunset's gleam,
But grew out of the deep that the dead years keep
Where the rivers of madness stream
Down the gulfs to a pit of dream.
A chill wind blows through the rows of sheaves
In the meadows that shimmer pale,
And comes to twine where the headstones shine
And the ghouls of the churchyard wail
For harvests that fly and fail.
Not a breath of the strange grey gods of change
That tore from the past its own
Can quicken this hour, when a spectral power
Spreads sleep o'er the cosmic throne,
And looses the vast unknown.
So here again stretch the vale and plain
That moons long-forgotten saw,
And the dead leap gay in the pallid ray,
Sprung out of the tomb's black maw
To shake all the world with awe.
And all that the morn shall greet forlorn,
The ugliness and the pest
Of rows where thick rise the stones and brick,
Shall some day be with the rest,
And brood with the shades unblest.
Then wild in the dark let the lemurs bark,
And the leprous spires ascend;
For new and old alike in the fold
Of horror and death are penned,
For the hounds of Time to rend.

The Nightmare Lake
Written 1919

There is a lake in distant Zan,
Beyond the wonted haunts of man,
Where broods alone in a hideous state
A spirit dead and desolate.
A spirit ancient and unholy,
Heavy with fearsome melancholy,
Which from the waters dull and dense
Draws vapors cursed with pestilence.
Around the banks a mire of clay,
Crawl things offensive in decay,
And curious birds that reach the shore
Are seen by mortals nevermore.
Here shines by day the searing sun
On glassy wastes beheld by none,
And here by night pale moon beams flow
Into the deeps that yawn below.
In nightmares only it is told
What scenes beneath those beams unfold;
What scenes, too old for human sight,
Lie sunken there in endless night;
For in those depths there only pace
The shadows of a voiceless race.
One midnight, redolent of ill,
I saw that lake, asleep and still;
While in the lurid sky there rode
A gibbous moon that glow'd and glow'd.
I saw the stretching marshy shore
And the foul things those marshes bore:
Lizards and snakes convuls'd and dying;
Ravens and vampires putrefying;
All these and hov'ring o'er the dead,
Narcophagi that on them fed.
And as the dreadful moon climbed high,
Fright'ning the stars from out the sky,
I saw the lake's dull waters glow
Till sunken things appeared below.
There shown unnumbered fathoms down,
The towers of a forgotten town;
The tarnished domes and mossy walls;
Weed tangles spires and empty halls;
Deserted fanes and vaults of dread,
And streets of gold uncoveted.
These I beheld and saw beside
A horde of shapeless shadows glide;
A noxious horde which to my glance
Seem'd moving in a hideous dance
Round slimy sepulchres that lay
Beside a never travelled way.
Straight from the tombs a heaving rose
That vex'd the waters' dull repose,
While lethal shades of upper space
Howl'd at the moon's sardonic face.
Then sank the lake within its bed,
Sucked down to caverns of the dead,
Till from the reeking new-stript earth
Curl'd fetid fumes of noisome birth.
About the city, nigh uncover'd,
The monstrous dancing shadows hover'd,
When lo! There oped with a sudden stir
The portal of each sepulchre!
No ear may learn; no tongue may tell
What nameless horror then befell.
I see that lake - that moon agrin -
That city and the things within -
Waking, I pray that on that shore
The nightmare lake may sink no more!

How's things, TJ? :)

ok, resurrected wreck. it's weird how there's absolutely noting going on here, halloween-wise. it's much easier to restrict yourelf to a vicarious enjoymet of halloween when there are people around you actually celebrating halloween. otherwise, not so much.

:/

HI RW BC TJ

resurrected wreck said...

I didn't even give away any candy, TJ :( I was over at my friends' place & no kids came. We found out later that one of their neighbours who lives in the same building was sitting out on the front porch with a couple of friends & they turned kids away telling them there was no candy here. Jerks.

Anonymous said...

Hi there Ergo. Happy halloween :)

That sucks RW. I just had pizza, and is watching some DVD's and also has lots of leftover candy ^_^

resurrected wreck said...

Hi, EP :)

resurrected wreck said...

That's cool, BC :)

toujours said...

hi ergo!

that really sucks, resurrected wreck. that's just a mean-spirited thing to do, not a prank at all.

here, all the kids went out to church functions i guess. yikes. mom says that if the south is the bible belt, this part of ky is the buckle.

double yikes!

Anonymous said...

RW, well what ideas can you give me to throw away everyone who was into my endeavors for the right reasons?

Err, what I mean to say was, How can you inspire me to act happier?

Jeez, I don't like how the smileys here look on my computer. They look....less friendly and warm and more ugh.

Kapu did you know that Dickweed is telling people he was kind to you?

I don't think it was mean on purpose, TJ. I think they were just clueless.

resurrected wreck said...

Err, what I mean to say was, How can you inspire me to act happier?

Try filling yourself with more hate. I could stomp on your feet if you like?

toujours said...

hi kapunua, i read about your night, it sounds like you had a good time. :)

as for me, i'm heading out to do my thing now, but i'll be back later.

see ya, ergo, resurrected wreck, bc, kapunua and tattle-tale anon! eat some candy on my behalf!

Anonymous said...

See you later TJ

ergoproxy said...

that is a shame RW, for you and the kids

resurrected wreck said...

Have a good night, TJ ^_^

resurrected wreck said...

It really sucked, EP. I was so looking forward to seeing costumes and handing out treats :/ No one ever comes to my apartment as the entrance to it is at the back of the house, by way of a dark narrow alley. But my friends' place is at the front of their building. I thought for sure we'd get tons of kids, as there's a lot of young families in the area.

resurrected wreck said...

Sure enough, when I left my friends' place I saw a lot of kids out & about. Just none of them came to our place. Or rather, they did, but couldn't get past the sentries.

Anonymous said...

Hi, TJ! Yeah, it was great! Hope yours was great, too. Actually it still is. Not over yet! :) I'm watching the scariest movie moments. So much fun. ^_^

RW, you're gonna have to do so much better than that. You might even have to call my work "sh*t" to the public or something. Just a suggestion.

ergoproxy said...

see you TJ

resurrected wreck said...

Haven't I done that already, K?

resurrected wreck said...

RW, you're gonna have to do so much better than that.

But that's why I married you, K, so I could ride the coat tails of your success and not have to worry about doing better at anything ever again.

ergoproxy said...

that Haunting in Georgia was good

Anonymous said...

Sorry, I forgot myself there, RW. I don't know what I was thinking of. Maybe I should hump a muppet, too. Do you think that would make things better? They'd like me more?

Only, come to think of it, I am a TOTAL ORIGINAL so I can't do the same thing as someone else. So instead, I'll hump a muppet.

resurrected wreck said...

If you love me you'll hump a muppet. And dye your hair red.

Anonymous said...

I will do so, RW, AT THE SAME TIME.

And I will do both in order to maintain a low profile and not draw attention to myself in public.

resurrected wreck said...

Good idea. It's the same reason why I flash at concerts. No point in drawing attention to myself and the fact that I'm married to someone famous, I certainly wouldn't want that!

Anonymous said...

maybe you should sharpie "taken" on your panties RW

resurrected wreck said...

And cross out the "this space for rent" that's already there?

Anonymous said...

sorry RW, thought that was on your forehead :)

or you could write "reserved for rockstars", kinda has a ring to it.

hello Mayo my old friend,
I've come to talk to you again.
Because the night has come a creeping,
To the castle you are keeping.
Has your halloween,
been a night that you shall recall,
As you roam the hall?
Amidst the sound of silence

Has it been a joyous eve?
So good you felt no need to leave?
No paper plates or people just speaking,
Without a care for your well being?
Have you spent the night in arms of loving care?
Are they still there?
Embracing you in silence

I hope you always feel the love,
That fits you cosy as a glove.
And that you care so much for your
brethren,
That they can feel it though you part again.
And the memories of the time that you got to share,
Are always there,
to comfort you in silence.

mayo,

i can barely think of anything to say. i was up early because my folks wanted to take me to this "amazing" restaurant. in missouri. gah.

but it was fun, actually. the food wasn't over-the-top, imo, but the atmosphere was a great deal of fun, and the employees all icing on the cake. so i had a good time, despite my grumpy adolescent expectations.

but it was a long day. and an eventful night.

and i'm just so tired i can't think of anything to wrap up neat in a bow for you tonight.

i'm always wishing you well.

Mayo,

A random poem of the day for you:

World-Strangeness

STRANGE the world about me lies,
Never yet familiar grown --
Still disturbs me with surprise,
Haunts me like a face half known.

In this house with starry dome,
Floored with gemlike plains and seas,
Shall I never feel at home,
Never wholly be at ease?

On from room to room I stray,
Yet my Host can ne'er espy,
And I know not to this day
Whether guest, or captive I.

So, betwixt the starry dome
And the floor of plains and seas,
I have never felt at home,
Never wholly been at ease.

Sir William Watson

Ain't that the truth? Well, it is for me anyways.

Love to YOU Always,
S

p.s. Comfortably uncomfortable or umcomfortably comfortable.

Anonymous said...

Nice one, Solly. ^_^ Princess, I loved that movie when I was a kid. Well, I loved everything that had Christian Slater in it. ;)

Hey, today is Granny K's 89th birthday. ^_^ How cool is that? Also Boychild's Mummy's birthday. Oops, gotta send her a card.

Mayo and S(S)S: Awww, the best holiday is over. Don't you hate that? Halloween is my Christmas and I hate when it's gone. Don't you? I think I'm a little like Jack Skellington. I build up to Halloween all year, and everyone in the neighborhood thinks my house is really cool. Then it's over and I'm like, "Meh, bored now, and that wasn't as exciting as I'd hoped. Hmmmm... Christmas!" Yet, Christmas isn't really my holiday.

And this Christmas will be especially nerve-wracking because I'll be starting school like a week and a half after. O_O WTF.

Yare yare. I'd better get going; I don't know how I'm going to fit today into one day.

Hope you all have a terrific day. :D
