The day after the day after tomorrow.

I arrived suddenly, and knew for certain that I was in the best place. It was warm and calm and I stood quietly in the moment, waiting for my turn. But, I quickly realized I was alone. Figuring my wait would be short; I let out a breath releasing the smoke from my lungs and viewed my new environment. All around me the black tar covered ground seemed endless, as if I stood in the parking lot for the world’s demise. Its emptiness ran undisturbed to the limits of my sight, and I thought, “When does it all get here?” Then, as I dropped my spent cigarette to the ground, intending to snub it out with the toe of my boot, something caught my eye.

At the hem of my faded, old black shirt was a white thread and without reflection I pulled it. As I pulled, it continued to reveal itself. So I continued to pull, believing that my shirt would soon unravel. But instead, my shirt remained intact while the string started to wind around itself, twining, until it became as thick as a hangman’s rope. With both my hands I began to work against gravity to slow it down, but it quickly stole my grip allowing the rope to spill out, coiling at my feet. When it stopped its fall, the weight of it almost pulled me over and I realized it must be connected to me. I pulled up my shirt and discovered it cleanly attached to the center of my chest.

Then I noticed smoke coming up from the center of the pile and realized the rope had coiled itself around my still lit cigarette. I frantically began to kick at the rope, fearing that it would fuse its way to my heart, igniting it. My success gave way to alarm as I heard from behind me the approaching sound of children’s laughter. When I turned, they were upon me. Several of them grabbed the rope and ran past me. As I watched the rope begin to take off I grabbed for it, but it slipped in my hand. When it disconnected from my chest I fell to the ground and grabbed for its end, but it trailed off behind them, leaving an inky trace.

I remained on my knees. A dull pain echoed in my chest as I watched the children huddle together holding hands to ears, whispering. Several of them looked over at me, but quickly returned to their attention to the group. I felt like an idiot. Oddly, they seemed unfazed by my presence and began to jump rope, their laughter in time with its swooshing rhythm. So, I asked them “Don’t you know you’re playing with the end of me?” My reply came in the most unexpected way, as the smallest of all the children approached me with the seeping end of the rope, smiled and said, “It’s your turn.”

p.s. I’m always fucking late.

That's good TJ. You're free to chat away. Don't feel bad. :)

When it comes to my arthritis, I just deal with it naturally. No medications or anything unless the pain gets really bad, which doesn't happen a lot.

Doesn't that drive you mad, Ergo? So many times I've looked for something only to find it where I've looked 10 times before.

i'm glad it doesn't happen alot, bc. one of my classmates in london had very bad arthritis in her hip, and that's the only experience i've had with it. her's was bad enough that she had had to have hip surgery, so i'm very glad that your's is much less severe than that.

It's getting a bit better Amy, thanks. Although I wish my neck was feeling better. It's still not 100%yet.

I might go see a chriropractor because I'm thinking of signing up for some yoga and karate classes too. I read that arthritis can be dealt with through exercise and eating better.

Amyranth said...

BC, my best friend's grandmother swore by Tai-Chi, she said it really helped her. She couldn't do yoga because her arthritis was really severe.

But on you will go
though the weather be foul
On you will go
though your enemies prowl
On you will go
though the Hakken-Kraks howl
Onward up many

though your arms may get sore
and your sneakers may leak.

On and on you will hike
and I know you'll hike far
and face up to your problems
whatever they are.

Also I am due some good luck soon, as are my true friends, and I shall be grateful for it, too.

A Thneed's a Fine-Something-That-All-People-Need!
It's a shirt. It's a sock. It's a glove. It's a hat.
But it has OTHER uses. Yes, far beyond that.
You can use it for carpets. For pillows! For sheets!
Or curtains! Or covers for bicycle seats!"

ergo - I grew up in a much worse area than that one, so I didn't really see what the problem was.

Anyway, I am more likely to move so perhaps it was what was needed.

Mayo

Well I promised not to be all gloomy tonight so here I am all smiles. Look quick. I can’t hold this silly fake smile for long. No, really I'm kidding. It’s not a fake smile. I feel just fine tonight. Kinda mello really. It was a busy day at the store and that was good. Towards the end of my shift I had a woman come in and donate a whole bunch of books. She was moving and just wanted to give them to me. They are great books. Funny thing is she wasn’t a customer. She just knew the bookstore was there so she brought me the books. It was a very nice gesture.

Anyway, other than that the day was uneventful. Well almost. Flightly called to tell me she’d met the man of her dreams. Oh boy. At least this boyfriend sounds okay. He’s going to KU and is in journalism. That gets lots of points from me. I wish I had stayed at KU and entered the journalism program but back then I was too flightly. Yep, I was flightly but I always loved to write.

Oh, I was going to say that if you post tomorrow night I won’t be around. I’m only telling you this cause I want to say “hey”. So “Hey” Mayo. There I said it now. Hope things in your world are running smoothly.

You know if you get a chance you should post another photo for us. Several of the Lovelies have taken some wonderful pictures and we've been sharing them. Wanna share with us? I’m gonna sneak out tomorrow during the day and take a few pictures. The leaves are really beautiful right now but come next week our weather is gonna change. All the leaves will be blown from the trees. I want to catch them while I can.

Take care, okay? You know how some of us worry when we don’t hear from you for a while.

Night Mayo

Elena (to be quite honest I’m still flighty)

TJ - I am going forward. Out of here most likely! :) But yes its important to learn from these kinds of errors (read: arrogance) in judgment! :)

I just wish the drama would stop soon. I have had enough - and I am a LEO!

mayo,

i used to make dolls. not the scary-cute, loaded-with-pink-ruffles kind *shudder* but ones from cloth. some of them were rag dolls -- once i made a little witch, with red striped legs and wearing a black dress. she even had a white petticoat with a pocket for her tiny pet felt frog. *grin*

those were fun, but the ones i spent most my time making weren't really "dolls". they were cloth figurines. my favorite technique was to stitch together the torso, partially stuff it, and then start taking darts. it was like carving, but with needle and thread. when the body was the shape i wanted, i would do the same with the limbs, and finally the head.

by the time i reached the figure's head, i had an idea of who she was, and could create the appropriate face for her. it was usually a surprise, all the same. they take on a bit of their own life between the time you first cut the fabric and the moment you take the last stitch. the last one i was working on is still waiting to be finished, and i don't know if i ever will.

i loved working with cloth. i loved making something real. i loved using a needle, because it was human technology almost unchanged since its invention. the needles are smaller, and finer, but the techniques are the same as the ones used in the renaissance, in my 13th century england, in mycenae, in the paleolithic caves of europe.

there are so many ways to make things. i thought about focussing on fiber art there for awhile, and my favorite prof back in college always told me i was (imagine a rough hungarian accent) "a good draughtsman!" so i've considered illustration, too. but as good as all of those methods of creation are, none make me feel like i do when i'm writing.

even this, the rambling good night i give you every night, gives me that writing buzz. it is what i am meant to do. it i what i always will always strive to be better at.

words, their meanings, their histories, their sounds, their rhythms, i think they will always be the key to my soul. they are what i breathe.

it's good to know that, and to claim it. *grin*

good night, mayo-sama. sleep well, and may you dream the dreams that enrich your waking life.

Seeing as I am back working in my field:

Mayo
“The best scientist is open to experience and begins with romance - the idea that anything is possible.” *
I chose science not because I thought I could ever know or understand it all, but because the discovery is so awe inspiring,. The wonder of a new concept, the investigations, the observations, all the intricacies of the world around us, they never cease to amaze me. I feel very grateful that I have been able to be part of that world, to have the type of mind that enquires and analyses. To have that unquenchable curiosity, that search for new and deeper understanding. I am also so thankful to have the ability to share that knowledge and to inspire that wonder in others, that I am able to break down some of the most complex theories in a way that the unimaginable can become understandable to a child. I think the world around us is so full of fascination that it needs to be shared. In understanding that world even a little, we can grasp it’s wonder and understand why we should care. But also just because it is all so damn interesting! I find it something I want to immerse myself in, and if I am able to spark that flicker of interest, even if it never grows to a flame, at least it is there, even if only briefly. I know that sometimes it may come to life in ways and at times when I am no longer involved, I’ve seen it happen. So I hope that you have something that you love, and that you enjoy sharing, and that while you do that flicker is sparked in someone, and it might grow into something truly amazing
wishing you fascination, gratitude, humility and grace,
much love EP xx

SS
“Touch a scientist and you touch a child.”*
It is a wonderful thing to never loose that childlike wonder and fascination with everything around you. To never assume you “know–it-all” that you are always open to new ideas and unique experiences. A child wants to grow. To become jaded is possibly one of the worst things a person can do, for if we ever feel we have reached our peak or that there is nothing more to know, we stop growing. We also totally underestimate the world, it’s people and ourselves. It has always been my hope that in some way I can show teenagers, who already feel jaded that there is something else, that they can achieve, learn, grow. That there is so much more than they imagine. I know I’m still in so many ways a child, and I love it, like the Dr Seuss quote I used above “If you never did you should. These things are fun and fun is good.” So many times we forget just good, plain fun, Sending you the ability to have eyes like a child,a mind like a sage and a heart like a saint
Lotsa love EP xx

For everyone

I'VE LEARNED...

That you cannot make someone love you, all you can do is be someone who can be loved. The rest is up to them that no matter how much I care, some people just don't care back.

I've learned-
That it takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it. That it's not what you have in your life but who you have in your life that counts.

I've learned -
That you can get by on charm for about fifteen minutes. After that, you better know something. That you shouldn't compare yourself to the best others can do. That you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life.

I've learned-
That it's taking me a long time to become the person that I want to be. That you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.

I've learned-
That you can keep going long after you can't. That we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel.

I've learned-
That either you control your attitude or it controls you. That regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is a first, the passion fades and there had better be something else to take its place.

I've learned-
That heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences. That money is a lousy way of keeping score.

I've learned-
That my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time. That sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you are down will be the ones to help you get back up.

I've learned-
That sometimes when I get angry I have the right to be angry, but it doesn't give me the right to be cruel. That true friendship continues to grow over the longest distance, and the same goes for true love.

I've learned-
That just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have. That maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had and what you've learned from them and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated.

I've learned-
That you should never tell a child their dreams are unlikely or outlandish. Few things are more humiliating, and what tragedy it would be if they believed it. That no matter how good your friend is, they're going to hurt you every once in a while, and you must forgive them for that.

I've learned-
That it isn't always good enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you must learn to forgive yourself. That no matter how bad a heart is broken; the world doesn't stop for your grief.

I've learned-
That our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for whom we become. That just because two people argue, it doesn't mean that they don't love each other, and just because they don't argue, it doesn't mean they do.

I've learned-
That we don't have to change friends, if we understand that friends change. That two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different.

I've learned-
That your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don't even know you. That even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you, you will find the strength to help.

I've learned-

Good morning/afternoon/night SS, Mayo, Ergo, Miranth, Martha, Sweetcheeks/BC, Amy, Elena, TJ, Dr. Seuss; various anons, watchers and lurkers; possibly Possum, FASC and/or Lewis (and Dave); all whos, Bartholomews and big hearted mooses in the land o'blogbelieve!

How are you all today? Happy, well and in touch with your inner Dr. Seuss. Not just today; but, everyday ~ I hope!

Miranth: What the heck happened? Are you okay? I mean REALLY okay? Please check your e~mail and let me know. *huge hug*

Mya: ORDER UP: Grits with cheese, garlic, scallions and diced tomatoes. And, a glass of Chardonnay to wash them grits down, all fancy and proper like! ;)

Sweetcheeks: I can't seem to "catch" you, anywhere, these days. I miss you! I'm glad to hear you got out a bit this weekend. I'm sorry you didn't spot that Killer! Oh well, he'll be there next week (we hope)! *wink and huge hug for you too*

Ergo: I'm glad to hear your day was a good one. I suppose standing up in front of a class is like riding a bike (too)! Having said that, I'm glad it was you and not me. I don't think they could pay me enough money to ever stand up in front of a bunch of 16 year olds AGAIN. Not in an 'educational' environment that is!
*smooooooooch*

To ponder (or not) today:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Whatever you want to do, do it. There are only so many tomorrows"
Unknown
and, because I love Dr. Seuss:
"Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you."
*hopes no one posted that one on the previous page*
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Enjoy the day, everyone!

Hugs and Love,
~Namaste~

Which are You?

THERE are two kinds of people on earth to-day;
Just two kinds of people, no more, I say.

Not the sinner and saint, for it's well understood,
The good are half bad, and the bad are half good.

Not the rich and the poor, for to rate a man's wealth,
You must first know the state of his conscience and health.

Not the humble and proud, for in life's little span,
Who puts on vain airs, is not counted a man.

Not the happy and sad, for the swift flying years
Bring each man his laughter and each man his tears.

No; the two kinds of people on earth I mean,
Are the people who lift, and the people who lean.

Wherever you go, you will find the earth's masses,
Are always divided in just these two classes.

And oddly enough, you will find too, I ween,
There's only one lifter to twenty who lean.

In which class are you? Are you easing the load,
Of overtaxed lifters, who toil down the road?

Or are you a leaner, who lets others share
Your portion of labor, and worry and care?

Have a great day, guys! Go out and voice your choice!

Dead Horse

Sick of this life
Not that you'd care
I'm not the only one with
whom these feelings I share

Nobody understands,
quite why we're here
We're searchin' for answers
That never appear

But maybe if I looked real hard I'd
I'd see your tryin' too
To understand this life,
That we're all going through

Then when she said she was gonna like wreck my car...I didn't know what to
do.

Sometimes I feel like I'm beatin' a dead horse
And I don't know why you'd be bringin' me down
I'd like to think that our love's worth a tad more
It may sound funny but you'd think by now
I'd be smilin'
I guess some things never change
Never change

I met an old cowboy
I saw the look in his eyes
Somethin' tells me he's been here before
'Cause experience makes you wise
I was only a small child
When the thought first came to me
That I'm a son of a gun and the gun of a son, that brought back the devil in me

Sometimes I feel like I'm beatin' a dead horse
And I don't know why you'd be bringin' me down
I'd like to think that our love's worth a tad more
It may sound funny but you'd think by now
I'd be smilin'
I guess some things never change
Never change

I ain't quite what you'd call an old soul
Still wet behind the ears
I been around this track a couple of times
But now the dust is starting to clear
Ohhhhhhhhhhh yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sometimes I feel like I'm beatin' a dead horse
And I don't know why you'd be bringin' me down
I'd like to think that our love's worth a tad more
It may sound funny but you'd think by now
I'd be smilin'
Ooh yeah, I'd be smilin'
No way I'd be smilin'
Oooooooooohhhhhhhh smilin'!!!!!!

Here are a few things I have learned.
1. It’s better to sing off key than not to sing at all.

2. Promptness shows respect.

3. You can’t avoid offending people from time to time. When you don’t mean it, apologize. When you do mean it, accept the consequences.

4. The first person to use the expression “Get a life!” in any dispute is the loser.

5. The medium is not the message. Those who issue blanket condemnations of any form of communication—be it TV, tabloids, text messages or blogs—simply aren’t paying attention.

6. The most valuable thing to have is a good reputation, and it’s neither hard nor expensive to acquire one: Be fair. Be honest. Be trustworthy. Be generous. Respect others.

7. Prejudice and bigotry is hard-wired into us. You can’t overcome it until you acknowledge it.

8. Don’t be bothered when people don’t share your tastes in music, sports, literature, food and fashion. Be glad. You’d never get tickets to anything otherwise.

9. Cough syrup doesn’t work.

10. Empathy is the greatest virtue. From it, all virtues flow. Without it, all virtues are an act.

11. The Golden Rule is the greatest moral truth. If you don’t believe in it, at least try to fake it.

12. Keeping perspective is the greatest key to happiness. From a distance, even a bumpy road looks smooth.

13. You can’t win arguing with police officers or referees, but every so often you can fight City Hall.

14. It’s not “political correctness” that dictates that we try not to insult others’ beliefs and identities. It’s common decency.

15. It may not feel like it, but it’s good luck when you have people at home and at work who aren’t afraid to tell you when you’re wrong.

16. It’s 10 times easier to fall in love than to stay in love. And no matter what the sad songs say about romance, broken hearts do mend.

17. Don’t waste your breath proclaiming what’s really important to you. How you spend your time says it all.

18. Keeping an open mind is as big a challenge as you get older as keeping a consistent waistline.

19. It’s never a shame when you admit you don’t know something, and often a shame when you assume that you do.

20. Wounds heal faster under bandages than they do in the open air.

21. Fear of failure is a ticket to mediocrity. If you’re not failing from time to time, you’re not pushing yourself. And if you’re not pushing yourself, you’re coasting.

22. Anyone who judges you by the kind of car you drive or shoes you wear isn’t someone worth impressing.

23. Grudges are poison. The only antidote is to let them go.

24. If you’re in a conversation and you’re not asking questions, then it’s not a conversation, it’s a monologue.

25. In everyday life, most “talent” is simply hard work in disguise.

26. Great parents can have rotten kids and rotten parents can have great kids. But even though biology plays a huge role in destiny, that’s no excuse to give up or stop trying.

27. Four things that most people think are lame but really are a lot of fun: barn dancing, charades, volleyball and sing-alongs.

28. Two cheap, easy self-improvement projects: Develop a strong handshake and start smiling when you answer the phone.

29. When something that costs less than $200 breaks and it’s not under warranty and you can’t fix it yourself in half an hour, it’s almost certainly more cost-effective to throw it out.

30. Most folk remedies are nonsense, but zinc really does zap colds.

31. Physical attraction is nice, but shared values and a shared sense of humor are the real keys to lasting love.

32. To keep dental visits regular, schedule your next appointment on your way out from your last appointment.

33. The 10-minute jump start is the best way to get going on a big task you’ve been avoiding. Set a timer and begin, promising yourself that you’ll quit after 10 minutes and do something else. The momentum will carry you forward.

34. Laundry day is much easier when all your socks are the same and you don’t have to sort them.

35. Candor is overrated. It’s hard to unsay what you’ve said in anger and almost impossible to take back what you’ve written.

36. Goals that you keep to yourself are just castles on the beach. If you’re determined to achieve something, tell people about it and ask them to help you stick with it.

37. Mental illness is as real as diabetes, arthritis or any other disease, and no more disgraceful. It’s the stigma that’s disgraceful.

38. In crisis or conflict, always think and act strategically. Take time to figure out what the “winning” outcome is for you, then work toward it.

39. All the stuff you have lying around that you’ll never want, need, wear or look at again? It just makes it harder to find what you do want, need or intend to wear. File it, donate it or throw it out.

40. Exercise does not take time. Exercise creates time.

41. Almost no one stretches, flosses or gives compliments often enough.

42. It pays to keep handy a list that includes a trusted plumber, electrician, locksmith, appliance repair specialist and heating contractor. When you really need one is no time to start looking.

43. The store-brand jelly, cereal, paper goods, baking supplies and pharmacy products are good enough.

44. When you mess up, ’fess up. It’s the fastest way, if there is one, to forgiveness.

45. When you’re not the worst-dressed person at a social event, you have nothing to worry about.

46. Be truthful or be quiet. Lies are hard to keep track of.

47. Your education isn’t complete until you’ve learned to take a hint.

48. There’s a good reason to be secretive about your age. People tend to assume things when they know how old you are. “Oh, he’s turning 50,” they might say, for example, “probably full of cranky self-lacerating aphorisms that he thinks qualify as wisdom.”

49. Whatever your passion, pursue it as though your days were numbered. Because they are.

50. Readers love lists. You got to the bottom of this one, didn’t you?

You ladies have a great day.

On my way out, my Obama pin stuck me and I laughed because OMG I shed blood for this election. Haha.

Oh, Mayo, I just had such a retardedly funny thought. As I refreshed your blog I imagined that you had made a new post, and at first glance it read like something porny, or dark, or horror, but on second glance would plainly be about you casting your vote. I thought, "How Mayo that would be!"

Then I thought of doing it myself but I already gave it away by talking about voting. Ah well.

Anonymous said...

Exactly! But it still is such an awful thing that it could sway it in the other direction. Things like that don't help. I don't see why people don't understand that.

McCain voters have been harassing people at Obama rallies for the last few months and it did nothing to sway anyone away from him; it only made the McCain camp look bad. This makes the Obama camp look bad. Why would anyone do that?

Yes, they are a small portion. There are extremists and violent people in any party, belief system, race, creed, walk of life.

A funny thing happened while I was voting. One of the helper-outer people tapped on the side of my booth and moved the curtains to ask if I had pulled the lever yet. O_O WTF. I seriously felt like I'd been caught taking a pee. I was like, "OMG I'M IN HERE!" The guy was like, "Just seeing if you had pulled the lever yet," and the other guy out there went, "She just went in there; she hasn't cast her vote yet."

Jesus Christ! Totally busted my rhythm.

More Problems in PA
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 11:50 AM
Three more things to keep an eye on in the Keystone state:

1) State operatives are reporting that calls are being made to Republican voters in Lancaster County telling them their polling stations have been changed.

2) NBC News is reporting major "voting obstacles" at at least eight different polling stations in PA. Broken voting machines are listed as the main problem.

3) Two Black Panthers have allegedly blocked persons from entering a polling place in Philadelphia. One of them is said to have brandishes a nightstick. An eyewitness told Fox News one of the Black Panthers said "We're tired of white supremacy."

This sucks.

Belltown, Seattle WA: Violence takes iconic Tuba Man.

Seattle knew Edward McMichael by sight or sound, the bespectacled guy with the wispy beard and floppy Uncle Sam and Dr. Seuss hats. For decades he breathed life into his shiny brass instrument, outside city sports venues.

Tuba Man for years played outside sporting events around the city, blowing dirges when the home team lost and cheerful tunes to follow victories, just for the joy of meeting the crowd. "That's what I value most," he said. "People."

On Oct. 25, police say, McMichael, 53, was near a bus stop in the 500 block of Mercer Street when thugs attacked, beating and robbing him after midnight. He was taken to the hospital for head wounds and was home recovering. But he died sometime Sunday or early Monday.

I used to live in Belltown and I saw and heard that guy all the time. >_<

When the Mariners made a storied postseason run in 1995, McMichael played "Happy Days Are Here Again," outside the Kingdome.

I was there that night. I'll never forget it, walking around Belltown, going to the top of the Space Needle and watching all the traffic from the Kingdome. Walking along the wharfs and everyone going by in their cars going, "WOOOO!"

Damn!

The original black panthers condemn people like the new black panthers and called them black racist.

But sometimes people in the news need a story and they will pick up on something that is small and make it into a big deal.

Like how some news papers have called MCR an emo death cult.

good morning

happy voting day USA

it's a lovely sunny day over here, and it is such a shame some people feel any occasion is an acceptable excuse to threaten and coerce to heir own ends.
Over here we have major very serious threat of bombings and violence at Australian businesses and embassies in Bali and Australia as the Bali Bombers, who set the bombs in the Bali nightclubs that killed 202 people in 2002 are being executed. It has been very long trials for horrific murders of people who show no remorse at all, in fact are proud of it all.

In 1989, a group calling themselves the New Black Panther Party (NBPP) was formed in Dallas, TX. Ten years later, the NBPP became home to many former Nation of Islam members when the chairmanship was taken by Khalid Abdul Muhammad. Members of the original Black Panther Party have insisted that this party is illegitimate and have strongly objected that there "is no new Black Panther Party"
