I Hope you don't mind my warnings about the squirrels. You see, we have a lot of them in TN, and they're vicious little bastards. Ever since they discovered our bird feeder, and the (apparently) tantalizing seed that's in it, they routinely attack our patio doors demanding more. I'm serious, they Love this stuff. One threw itself at the divider strip between the two doors one day, and hung on, chattering away at us b/c we hadn't filled up the buffet yet.
It scares me to think they might be plotting some Secret Unknown Squirrel Attack. I'll let you know. ;)

The funny thing, for me, is Frank is the only one from that band that I have ever met, to my knowledge. :))

BI - Frank is a super nice person. When I meet him I always thank him for his kindness in meeting so many. I will always remember that it was he who came out and talked to fans after the infamous Clarkston show. I was busy so I didn't stop for long, but I saw that he was calming people. I would have been crying in a corner somewhere - no lie! ...but I really don't mean to rehash the past. And I do think it is the past.
And initially, I found myself saying similar things to mayo and thanking him, as well. Parallels - they happen everywhere. :)

Finally got to see The Dark Night last night. Hmmm, very undecided about the movie, although I thought Heath Ledger's depiction of his character was incredibly nuanced and believable.
You almost could sense the psychosis dripping from the character. And without the usual satire, which makes it so much better.
I think what intrigued me the most was how his character views his nemesis, and goes on to add "you complete me". Wow, an exceptional script.
Amy, I just wanna say, you bring so much brightness to this place :) Maybe having a traditional wife isn't so bad. Nice, clean house, fresh sheets, home cooked meals and sex the obligatory 2.5 times a weeks ^_~

He didn't mess with the trap all night long, but let me get up and start making all kinds of noise and he's like, time to eat! SNAP!

One of the things I remember about The Bad Place I Used To Work was that my boss would use glue traps to catch mice. I objected to this to the point where he was annoyed with me. I was like, "You're a vet, you're not supposed to hurt animals; you took an oath." Still he used them.
I would find mice stuck to it, struggling to free themselves and losing their fur, so I would always peel them off as gently as I could, bathe them in olive oil, feed them for a few days and let them go.
Then, I had a better plan. Instead I would sabotage his nasty, nasty evil traps. I would put powder or oil on the traps so that nothing would stick to them. ^_^ After a while, he stopped catching and killing mice.
Though now that I'm gone, he's probably doing it again.

I don't mind when mice walk around. I don't have them in my house (knock wood, because the ARE destructive,) because of my dogs, but I've stayed in houses where mice are like "Hey, whaddup homeskillet? I think I'll just chill here on the couch." I think they're sweet when they're bold.

I really do like you, Kapunua. I don't believe in killing anything unless it's threatening me. I've caught mice, salamanders and frogs in my house and snakes in my garage (I live in the south), some with my bare hands. I always put them back outside.
It annoys me to no end that people think I'm weird because of this when these little animals pose no threat to me at all. :/
But but, spideys are so sweet, too.
I used to be terrified or spiders up until I was sixteen. I would spray them with Raid while freaking out. But my fried Jeremy (one of my only friends in high school; long story,) wasn't afraid of them and always begged me not to kill them.
Well one night I was watching Monty Python (as I did every night) and a huge black spider started to come down from my parents' skylight. So I screamed and ran for the Raid and I was about to spray it, but it was just hanging there.
It's so weird, this is one moment in my life that i'll never forget. He was just chilling there and I thought of Jeremy asking me to not kill spiders. I was all shaky and sweating but I couldn't do it.
So I said, "I'll make a deal with you, spider. you just go back up there in the skylight and mind your business. I'll mind mine, and we'll see how this goes."
Well, he went back up there and built a web. Every night I'd peek at him, and he was catching all these bugs and stuff. Mosquitoes, flies and everything. I was like, "This dude is kind of cool."
Then, because I was such a lonely freak, I became friends with him and I would talk to him every night. I named him Gareth after one of King Arthur's knights.
This went on for about three months, till one night I found him lying dead on my parents' coffee table. Oh man, I was really bummed. (I remember, so was Mummy K.) I picked him up in a tissue and I put him in a little plastic jewelry case which I glued shut. Then I glued a little lace bow on it and a plastic spider I'd gotten out of a 25 cent machine.
Do you know, I still have that to this very day?
So, I can't kill any spiders, and we don't hurt each other. ^_^

I guess we are weird. I have a really hard time killing things; it makes me feel so terrible. I'll kill wasps and ticks but that's it. I hate to see things suffer. Of a bug is stuck in something or drowning in the pool, I have to rescue it. Watching things struggle or seeing the evidence of struggle really upsets me. O_o
mice don't bother me, either (or spiders anymore), but there are some nasty diseases they're associated with, unfortunately. there's that one that started in new mexico, can't think of the details now.

the first apartment my ex had after college was this studio on the top floor of an old decrepit building. it had been a shop back in the 20's or 30's, and was located in this itty bitty bump-in-the-road town in minnesota (where he lived and where i went to college).
he had crickets and ants in the kitchen and the mice owned the place practically. they went where they wanted. he was such a snow white, he didn't care, just kept his food in airtight containers. lol
one night when i was visiting, we were sitting cross-legged on the floor, watching tv, and a mouse came out and actually ran up on his knee!
we just watched it. it looked around, looked at us, wiggled its nose a bit, and then went on its way.

Awww TJ, that is so sweet! My uncle is like that, too. He has mice in his house sometimes. One of them ran across his shoulders while he was watching TV. He was like, "OMG, the nerve. LOL whatever."
TJ and anon, there is a manga I would recommend to you. It is called Petshop of Horrors and trust me, that is a really bad translation or representation of it! It's about a petshop owner who sees the secret identity of animals. He sells them to clients with certain conditions, which the client usually does not meet due to some personal (sometimes fatal) flaw. But the animal spirit is always there for a reason, to teach the client a lesson. They either learn it or die.
It sounds is evil but it is a very lovely and beautiful and heart-rending series. And at the end of it, it all comes together and the theme is the preservation of life and the planet.
i also rescue the bugs and critters, too (and talk to them just like you do kapunua -- make deals with them! lol)
my ex was such a softie -- he could pet bumbleebees and butterflies would land on him. if i remember correctly, his confirmation name was francis (after the saint, in fact), so there you go.
i can't even begin to tell you how many times we had to stop and rescue stray dogs (even if they didn't particularly want to be rescued).
i'm not quite that bad about it!
i've read that one, kapunua, though not all the way to the end of the series (library didn't have all of them, wtf?). i enjoyed it. :)
From Petshop of Horrors, This is maybe my favorite scene ever. Honestly, I'm sitting here crying just by looking at it. (Also because it's not even a year since I lost my own dog.)
it's funny you should mention St. Francis. I've got statues and such of him all over the place. I'm not a Christian, obviously, and I don't do the whole saint thing, but "St. Francis" is a way to put a name to some kind of animal guide kind of entity thing. Sometimes I picture it like typical St. Francis, and sometimes I picture him like Count D from Petshop of Horrors, and sometimes I don't picture him/her/it at all.
It's weird in my head.

did you ever see the movie "brother sun, sister moon" kapunua? it's a very 60's version of the lifestory of the dude, with a soundtrack by donovan no less (i think it's donovan?), but it's gorgeous and lush -- zefferelli was the director,a nd it wasn't too inaccurate as far as films go.
it's worth a look, but it my point is that is really plays up the gentle hippie aspects of the saint. :)
Oh man, I haven't seen it, TJ. Sounds like something I should look for, and I'm always up for Zefferelli. :)
