strength of character

willowed cables entwined
confident in the bind

strait and narrow, strong
slight curve at the hilt
meeting emotion
with a halt
holding decision
above impulse
strong, wise and steady
grounded by design

I dunno, RW.

Cat's the only one I'm familiar with, but it might have been a cover or something.

I could find out?

Anonymous said...

I didn't realize so many people covered it.

I can't find the original author :/

Is it Terry Jacks?

Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
It's not warm when she's away
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And she's always gone too long anytime
She goes away

Wonder this time where she's gone
Wonder if she's gone to stay
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't a home
Anytime she goes away

And I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know I know, I know, I know

Hey I'll leave the young thing alone
But ain't no sunshine when she's gone
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
Only darkness everyday

Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home
Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away

Found this, Mustard:

Originally "Le Moribond" ("The Dying Man"), this was written and performed in French by Belgian poet-composer Jacques Brel in 1961.

Apparantly, Nirvana also did a cover of it (!)

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely
Sunshine almost always makes me high

If I had a day that I could give you
Id give to you a day just like today
If I had a song that I could sing for you
Id sing a song to make you feel this way

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely
Sunshine almost always makes me high

If I had a tale that I could tell you
Id tell a tale sure to make you smile
If I had a wish that I could wish for you
Id make a wish for sunshine all the while

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely
Sunshine almost always makes me high
Sunshine almost all the time makes me high
Sunshine almost always

Ah, John Denver :)

My mom used to play his music all the time on the 8-track in her car.

Jacks wrote and recorded a number of other songs and went on to become a successful record producer for other Canadian singers, earning a Juno nomination as "Producer of the Year". Jacks claimed on a VH1 special to have written "Seasons In The Sun" after a friend of his just died. The song was actually penned by Jacques Brel, with the English translation by Rod McKuen; however, Jacks re-wrote the lyrics for the third verse.

Looks like it was originally written by somebody else, but reworked by Terry Jacks.

I had no idea one song could have so many authors & incarnations!

I got a pocket, got a pocketful of sunshine.
I got a love, and I know that it's all mine.
Oh.
Do what you want, but you're never gonna break me.
Sticks and stones are never gonna shake me.
No.
Take me away: A secret place.
A sweet escape: Take me away.
Take me away to better days.
Take me away: A higher place.
I got a pocket, got a pocketful of sunshine.
I got a love, and I know that it's all mine.
Oh.
Do what you want, but you're never gonna break me.
Sticks and stones are never gonna shake me.
No.
I got a pocket, got a pocketful of sunshine.
I got a love, and I know that it's all mine.
Oh.
Wish that you could, but you ain't gonna own me.
Do anything you can to control me.
Oh, no.
Take me away: A secret place.
A sweet escape: Take me away.
Take me away to better days.
Take me away: A higher place.
There's a place that I go,
But nobody knows.
Where the rivers flow,
And I call it home.
And there's no more lies.
In the darkness, there's light.
And nobody cries.
There's only butterflies.
Take me away: A secret place.
A sweet escape: Take me away.
Take me away to better days.
Take me away: A higher place.
Take me away: A secret place.
A sweet escape: Take me away.
Take me away to better days.
Take me away: A higher place.
Take me away: A secret place.
To better days take me away.
Take me away to better days.
Take me away: A higher place.
The sun is on my side.
Take me for a ride.
I smile up to the sky.
I know I'll be all right.
The sun is on my side.
Take me for a ride.
I smile up to the sky.
I know I'll be all right.

Okay, last one and I'll shut up.

I ain't happy,
I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I'm useless but
Not for long
The future is coming on
I ain't happy,
I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I'm useless but
Not for long
The future is coming on
It's coming on,
It's coming on
(Rah, yeah)
It's coming on,
It's coming on
Finally someone let me
Out of my cage
Now time for me is nothin'
'Cause I'm counting no age
Now I couldn't be there now
You shouldn't be scared
I'm good at repairs and
I'm under each snare
Intangible (ah y'all)
I bet you didn't think so
I command you to,
Panoramic view (you)
Look I'll make it
All manageable
Pick and choose,
Sit and lose
All you different crews
Chicks and dudes,
Who you think is
Really kicking tunes
Picture you getting down
And I'll picture too
Like you lit the fuse
You think it's fictional,
Mystical-maybe
Spiritual hero who appears
On you to
Clear your view (yeah)
When you're too crazy
Lifeless for whose definition
Is for what life is
Priceless to you because
I put ya on the hype shift
Did ya like it?
Gut smokin' righteous
But one talkin' psychic
But among knows possess you
With one though
I ain't happy,
I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I'm useless but
Not for long
The future is coming on
I ain't happy,
I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I'm useless but
Not for long
(That's right)
The future is coming on
It's coming on,
It's coming on,
It's coming on,
It's coming on
The essence, the basics
Without it you make it
Allow me to make
This child like a nature
Rhythm you have it
Or you don't
That's a fallacy,
I'm in them
Every spiralling tree,
Every child of peace
Every cloud I see you
See with your eyes
You see destruction and demise
(That's right)
Corruption in the skies
From this f***ing enterprise that
I'm sucked into your lies
The Russell that is muscles
The percussion he provides
For me I say God,
Y'all can see me now
'Cause you don't see
With your eye
You perceive with your mind
That's the end of it
So I'm gonna stick around
With Russ and be a mentor
Bust a few rounds of motherf***ers
Remember but the thought is
I brought all this so you can
Survive when
Law is lawless (right here)
Fearless, sensations that
You thought was dead
No squealing, remember that
It's all in your head
I ain't happy,
I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I'm useless but
Not for long
The future is coming on
I ain't happy,
I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I'm useless but
Not for long
The future is coming on
It's coming on, It's coming on,
It's coming on, It's coming on
My future (future)
It's coming on, It's coming on,
It's coming on
My future
It's coming on, It's coming on,
It's coming on
My future

1:48, I love that song.

Here's another favorite.

Sun is shining, the weather is sweet, yeah
Make you wanna move your dancing feet now
To the rescue, here I am
Want you to know, y'all, can you understand?

When the mornin' gather the rainbow, yeah, yeah
Want you to know, I'm a rainbow too now
To the rescue, here I am
Want you to know, y'all, can you, can you, can you understand?

Sun is shining, the weather is sweet now
Make you wanna move your dancing feet, yeah
But to the rescue, here I am
Want you to know just if you can, here I stand, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no

Can you understand me now, baby?
Do you believe me?

The Sun Rising by John Donne

Busy old fool, unruly Sun,
Why dost thou thus,
Through windows, and through curtains, call on us?
Must to thy motions lovers' seasons run?
Saucy pedantic wretch, go chide
Late schoolboys, and sour prentices,
Go tell court-huntsmen that the king will ride,
Call country ants to harvest offices,
Love, all alike, no season knows, nor clime,
Nor hours, days, months, which are the rags of time.
Thy beams, so reverend and strong
Why shouldst thou think?
I could eclipse and cloud them with a wink,
But that I would not lose her sight so long:
If her eyes have not blinded thine,
Look, and tomorrow late, tell me
Whether both the'Indias of spice and mine
Be where thou leftst them, or lie here with me.
Ask for those kings whom thou saw'st yesterday,
And thou shalt hear: "All here in one bed lay."

She'is all states, and all princes I,
Nothing else is.
Princes do but play us; compar'd to this,
All honour's mimic, all wealth alchemy.
Thou, sun, art half as happy'as we,
In that the world's contracted thus;
Thine age asks ease, and since thy duties be
To warm the world, that's done in warming us.
Shine here to us, and thou art everywhere;
This bed thy centre is, these walls, thy sphere

Anon, I see your's, and I raise you:

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new bluejeans
My father was a gamblin' man
Down in New Orleans

Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk

------ organ solo ------

Oh mother tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun

Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I'm goin' back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain

Well, there is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

Nice one Mustard. And how about:

Now the time has come
The music's between us
Though the night seems young
Is at an end
Only change will bring
You out of the darkness
In this moment everything is born again

Reach up for the sunrise
Put your hands into the big sky
You can touch the sunrise
Feel the new day enter your life

Reach up for the sunrise
Put your hands into the big sky
You can touch the sunrise
Feel the new day enter your life

Now the fireball burns
We go round together
As the planet turns into the light
Something more than dreams to
Watch out for each other
Coz we know what it means to be alive

Reach up for the sunrise
Put your hands into the big sky
You can touch the sunrise
Feel the new day enter your life

Reach up for the sunrise
Put your hands into the big sky
You can touch the sunrise
Feel the new day enter your life

Feel the new day enter your life
Feel the new day

Reach up for the sunrise
Put your hands into the big sky
You can touch the sunrise
Feel the new day enter your life

Reach up for the sunrise
Put your hands into the big sky
You can touch the sunrise
Feel the new day enter your life

Reach up for the sunrise
Put your hands into the big sky
You can touch the sunrise
Feel the new day enter your life

Give me the splendid silent sun, with all his beams full-dazzling;
Give me juicy autumnal fruit, ripe and red from the orchard;
Give me a field where the unmow’d grass grows;
Give me an arbor, give me the trellis’d grape;
Give me fresh corn and wheat—give me serene-moving animals, teaching content;
Give me nights perfectly quiet, as on high plateaus west of the Mississippi, and I looking up at the stars;
Give me odorous at sunrise a garden of beautiful flowers, where I can walk undisturb’d;
Give me for marriage a sweet-breath’d woman, of whom I should never tire;
Give me a perfect child—give me, away, aside from the noise of the world, a rural, domestic life;
Give me to warble spontaneous songs, reliev’d, recluse by myself, for my own ears only;
Give me solitude—give me Nature—give me again, O Nature, your primal sanities!
—These, demanding to have them, (tired with ceaseless excitement, and rack’d by the war-strife;)
These to procure, incessantly asking, rising in cries from my heart,
While yet incessantly asking, still I adhere to my city;
Day upon day, and year upon year, O city, walking your streets,
Where you hold me enchain’d a certain time, refusing to give me up;
Yet giving to make me glutted, enrich’d of soul—you give me forever faces;
(O I see what I sought to escape, confronting, reversing my cries;
I see my own soul trampling down what it ask’d for.)

Keep On The Sunny Side

There's a dark and a troubled side of life
There's a bright and a sunny side too
Though we meet with the darkness and strife
The sunny side we also may view

Keep on the sunny side always on the sunny side
Keep on the sunny side of life
It will help us every day it will brighten all our way
If we keep on the sunny side of life

Oh the storm and its fury broke today
Crushing hopes that we cherish so dear
The clouds and storm will in time pass away
The sun again will shine bright and clear

Let us greet with a song of hope each day
Though the moment be cloudy or fair
Let us trust in our Savior always
To keep us every one in His care

CYANIDE SUN
(HIM)
Lyrics:

Should’ve known how hard it is to stop tearing each other apart
Separating souls entwined with all these labyrinthine lies

I am dead to you, a shadow doomed
My love, forever in the dark
And of all untruths the truest is you
Too close to my heart

This emptiness I’ve made my home
Embracing memories of dreams long gone
One last caress from the corpse of love is all I want
Underneath the cyanide sun

We’ve sailed the seas of grief on a raft built with our tears
Looking for a way to disappear for a moment from our deepest fears

I’ll be drowning you in this river of gloom
Forever in my heart

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A little gloom and doom sunshine, that is!
Hugs and Love,
~Namaste~
A cowboy rides his horse up to a saloon.
All the patrons gawked as the cowboy kissed his horse on the butt before coming in and asking for a drink.
The bartender serves him and asks, "Mind if I ask why'd ya kiss your horse on the butt?"
The cowboy says, "It's 'cause I got chapped lips."
The bartender asks, "Does manure help them heal?"
Cowboy replies, "No, but it keeps me from licking them."
A vampire comes into a bar
and orders a glass of hot water.
The bartender is surprised and curious.
He gives the vampire the glass with the hot water and asks:
Excuse me, but you are obviously a vampire. What do you want to do with the hot water?
The vampire then takes a used tampon out of his pocket and says:
Tea time!
One face looks out from all his canvases,
One selfsame figure sits or walks or leans:
We found her hidden just behind those screens,
That mirror gave back all her loveliness.
A queen in opal or in ruby dress,
A nameless girl in freshest summer-greens,
A saint, an angel—every canvas means
The same one meaning, neither more nor less.
He feeds upon her face by day and night,
And she with true kind eyes looks back on him,
Fair as the moon and joyful as the light:
Not wan with waiting, not with sorrow dim;
No as she is, but was when hope shone bright;
Not as she is, but as she fills his dream.
I'm well and everyone else?
One evening a man was at home watching TV and eating smarties.
He'd toss them in the air, then catch them in his mouth.
in the middle of catching one, his wife asked a question, and
as he turned to answer her, a Smartie fell in his ear. He tried and tried to dig it out but succeeded in only pushing it in deeper.
He called his wife for assistance, and after hours, of trying they became worried and decided to go to hospital.
As they were ready to go out the door, their daughter came home with her date. After being informed of the problem, their daughter's date said he could get the Smartie out.
The young man told the father to sit down, then shoved two fingers up the father's nose and told him to blow hard. When the father blew his nose, the Smartie flew out.
The mother and daughter jumped and yelled for joy. The young man Insisted that it was nothing and the daughter took the young man out to the kitchen for something to eat.
Once he was gone the mother turned to the father.
She said, "That's wonderful! Isn't he clever? What do you think he's going to be when he grows older?"
The father replied................. "From the smell of his fingers................... our son-in-law!"
Anon I don't care who mayo is. Anyway GV never changed anything on the mayo blog or on the profile. so until that happens I don't believe that GV is mayo. I need more than just word s in this case.
Anonymous said...
What MJ said. No one cares who Mayo is.
Anonymous said...
That was funny, Safe! *giggles*
What did I tell you? We didn't have to wait long and we even didn't have to talk about Gerard and Frank!
Anonymous said...
Misdirection. What the eyes see and the ears hear, the mind believes.
It's a great power to have, to be sure.
Even better when no one knows you can do it.
Illusionist,
Harry Houdini also spent a vast majority of his time trying to dissuade people from following the ' Spiritualist ' movement, to no great avail.
Why?
Because they wanted/ needed to believe.
Leave people to their choices.
Good evening Mayo.
Cinderella is now 95 years old.
After a fulfilling life with the now dead prince, she happily sits upon her rocking chair, watching the world go by from her front porch, with a cat named Bob for companionship.
One sunny afternoon out of nowhere, appeared the fairy godmother. Cinderella said, 'Fairy Godmother, what are you doing here after all these years'?
The fairy godmother replied, 'Cinderella, you have lived an exemplary life since I last saw you. Is there anything for which your heart still yearns?'
Cinderella was taken aback, overjoyed, and after some thoughtful consideration, she uttered her first wish:
'The prince was wonderful, but not much of an investor.
I'm living hand to mouth on my disability cheques, and I wish I were wealthy beyond comprehension.
Instantly her rocking chair turned into solid gold.
Cinderella said,
'Ooh, thank you, Fairy Godmother'
The fairy godmother replied,
'It is the least that I can do.
What do you want for your second wish?'
Cinderella looked down at her frail body, and said,
'I wish I were young and full of the beauty and youth I once had.'
At once, her wish became reality, and her beautiful young visage returned. Cinderella felt stirrings inside her that had been dormant for years.
And then the fairy godmother spoke once more:
'You have one more wish; what shall it be?'
Cinderella looks over to the frightened cat in the corner and says, 'I wish for you to transform Bob, my old cat, into a kind and handsome young man.'
Magically, Bob suddenly underwent so fundamental a change in his biological make-up that, when he stood before her, he was a man so beautiful the likes of him neither she nor the world had ever seen.
The fairy godmother said,
'Congratulations, Cinderella, enjoy your new life.'
With a blazing shock of bright blue electricity,
the fairy godmother was gone as suddenly as she appeared.
For a few eerie moments, Bob and Cinderella looked into each other's eyes.
Cinderella sat, breathless, gazing at the most beautiful, stunningly perfect man she had ever seen.
Then Bob walked over to Cinderella, who sat transfixed in her rocking chair, & held her close in his young muscular arms.
He leaned in close, blowing her golden hair with his warm breath as he whispered...
'Bet you're sorry now that you cut my nuts off'
Hi mustards. Good evening GS. It's good to see you here again. Carrie left the blogs last night. I guess it was because of the anons.
I tried going to her profile to send an email, but she made it private.
There once was an oyster, whose story I'll tell
Who found that some sand, had gotten into his shell
It was only a grain, but gave him great pain
For oysters have feelings, although they are plain
Now, did he berate the harsh workings of fate
That had brought him to such a deplorable state?
"No", he said to himself, "Since I cannot remove it",
I'll lie in my shell, and think how to improve it",
The years rolled around, as the years always do,
And he came to his ultimate destiny .... stew.
Now the small grain of sand that had bothered him so,
Was a beautiful pearl all richly aglow,
This tale has a morale, for isn't it grand,
What an oyster can do with a morsel of sand?
Think...what could we do, if we'd only begin,
With some of the things that get under our skin.
But they never finish which amazes me.
Someone comes along, pries you open, robs everything you worked so hard to make, everything beautiful, and all you're left with is a shell.
An oyster without a pearl.
So, I slept for the most enormous amount of time yesterday and consequently had a rather weird dream.
I dreamt that I was at a press conference for MCR and all the time Ray kept rubbing his hand in what looked like pain.
So I grab my hand cream out of my bag, scoot my chair over to his and start to give his hand a massage.
Then, you know in ' Friends ' when Phoebe gives Monica a massage and she starts making sex noises, that's what Ray does.
Gerard is all like ' carry on, nobody's noticing ', Mikey and Bob are their usual straight faced hilarious selves and Frank is literally on the floor pissing himself laughing.
End of dream.
I have come to the conclusion that sleep is not good for my mental well being and I shall have to re- evaluate my need for it!!
Rock Band is a video game, like Guitar Hero, but more involved. You can play drums, bass, guitar or sing.
Costs $200 and he can't afford to pay me rent.
Well, depending on how well you get on together, you could take his Rock Band in lieu of payment , to be returned when he has repaid all that he owes.
That might work.
gnothi, is that true? they gave up on tip after all? that was my first online experience with the fandom. it was a great site.
hey there pixie! sorry, i missed your comment there!
i have to read so fast these days because i only ever have just two hours online at a time. :(
how are you doing?
gnothi seauton said...
Aww, I liked that site, GS.
It was fantasting with all those scanned articles.
The best archive that I ever found. Every MCR article under the same roof. Where am I going to do my detective work now?
TJ - certainly looks like it. There is general consternation every where, asking where it's gone. Maybe they didn't have the funds to keep going.
Pixie said...
i´m ok tj it was snowing today but melted away, but it was kinda like hollywood-snow :) I always remember that word when it starts snowing :)
how are you? long time no talk! oh damn it´s not funny to have not enough time for internet, especially with answering emails etc ^^
Anonymous said...
Yes, GS, they were always asking people to donate.
Martha Smith-Jones said...
Hello everybody my internet went all odd for a while but I'm back. I'm catching up right now.
toujours said...
gnothi, that's a real shame. i tried to donate when i could, but ihvaen't been able to for a long while. i really liked the chick that ran the place -- she was so friendly in her emails! fooey. i was hoping it would make a comeback.
pixie, do you really think of "hollywood snow"? heehee! that makes me happy! i'll have to pass that along to my mom, whenever i eventually talk to her next -- she's the one who calls it that.
my time's almost up again -- ten minutes left is all. :(
gnothi seauton said...
Yes, GS, they were always asking people to donate.
* roots around in pocket *
I have 27p and some fluff, will that do? Please come back TIP :(
Martha Smith-Jones said...
Well that is sad. I mean you think given the way some fans will throw their money at anything MCR related that they would have given to them.
gnothi seauton said...
Toujours - the end of an era. I bow my head to its passing.
toujours said...
*joins in with a silent moment*
it was a great group of people. it was the first place where i learned how unique and supportive mcr fans are.
and now i have to go -- 2 minutes left and counting!
talk yo you all when i get back i hope! (probably tuesday eveing, i'm thinking.)
bye!
be good!
gnothi seauton said...
Well that is sad. I mean you think given the way some fans will throw their money at anything MCR related that they would have given to them.
I can't talk, I never donated to them. Wish I had now.
How are you feeling today Martha?
toujours said...
mayo,
i'm here and i'm gone again.
and when i'm here, i mostly feel out-of-sync.
but that will change, i think. once i can get back online, and be a true regular again.
it's difficult to hang on, being restricted to just a quick dip in blogbelieve every once in awhile, but each time i return, i have the possibility of new words from you.
it's a good lure.
i saw that kapunua used a spider motif in one of her last poems, so now i feel a little funny to be telling you that i can feel the spider's thread around my wrist, comfortingly tight, as always. but it's true, no matter how many poems are written about spiders.
no matter what, mayo, i'm still ecto-tj, hovering up here in the corner with the cobwebs. even if most of what i assume about this blog and your words are products of my overactive imagination, still, i am who i am, silly and ridiculous maybe, but true.
toujours.
