For the protagonist and the cup of coffee we share...

A favorite...oh how I do love fire.

I Pity the Wind
Gerald Stern

I am taking off my glasses
so I can stare at the little candles
and the glass of water
in pure darkness.

I am letting a broom stand
for my speech on justice
and an old thin handkerchief
for the veil of melodrama I have worn for thirty years.

I am dragging in Euripides
for his strange prayer
and my own true Hosea
for his poem on love and loyalty.

After a minute I fall down dead
from too much thought
and turn to the freezing wall
for an hour of quiet sadness.

I start my practice later,
twenty minutes for breathing,
twenty minutes for song,
twenty minutes for liberation and ritual.

My poem is about the airshaft
and Zoroaster
and the soul caught in its last struggle
with the two-headed cow, father of everything.

My elation has something to do with light,
my misery with darkness,
my secrecy and fear and distance
with neither.

I end up with a pillow
and a painted floor, as I always do,
my head on the flowers, a little pocket for air,
my right arm drifting and dangling.

I end up just humming,
true to myself at last,
preparing myself for the bridge
and the hand that will lead me over, the hand I adore.

I pity this hero,
so in love with fire,
so warlike,
so bent on teaching.

p.s. I couldn't resist you and your agile fingers as they swept over my heart filling it with glory. To follow the mass, my own words prey.

Toujours, what do you know, with certainty, that Gerard has written?

well, for one, i wouldn't suppose he felt it necessary to use a ghost writer on the special edition book, though i have no proof if that is true.

there's also the small review of a tom waits' cd he wrote back at the beginning of the year for ap magazine, though, again, i suppose the magazine might not have known if he employed a ghost writer for that single paragraph.

then there's the comic book, the umbrella academy. again, no absolute proof that the entire staff of dark horse isn't covering for him, and making up an elaborate story about helping him through the learning process of writing comic book scripts.

so, in the end, i guess i have to concede that i can't point to any of his attributed writings with any certainty.

but really.

I've been trying all afternoon to think of something sparklingly witty and at least somewhat humorous to share with you all, to lighten up the mood in here for a little while. Sooo, I've decided to share another little tidbit in the life of your co-captain Sis Midnite -- this really did happen to me, hope you like it!

I was in New York (Long Island, to be precise) about 12 years ago. We were in the hotel bar, and we'd just ordered a Long Island Iced Tea. The bartender was looking at my friends & I like we'd just landed from the moon, when this older Texan couple struck up a conversation with us.

Texan husband: "You girls sure do sound different, where y'all from?"

My friend: "Edmonton, Alberta, Canada."

Texan hubby: "CANADA?! Y'all must be really enjoyin' the weather down here, then."

To which we replied that yes, it was very nice. (It was May.)

Texan hubby: "The missus and I always wanted to go to Canada, but we got no idea what we'd do up there. We don't know how to ski, or snowshoe, or any of the things that y'all do up there."

(This is when we discovered that we were talking to people that had never bothered to read an atlas.)

My other friend replied, deadpan:
"We have snowmobiles, so getting around isn't all that hard."

Texan hubby: "Y'mean that we can hop on one of them things and go see Wayne Gretzky?" (as if he was still with the Edmonton Oilers)

My friend: "Sure, we all know each other, anyway. I'm sure that could be arranged."

Texan hubby: "Y'all are so friendly! That would be swell. Tell you what, me and the missus will look into things when we get home. How can we find you when we get there?"

I told him, "It's easy. When you get off the plane, we're the third igloo to the left."

HE WROTE IT DOWN.
^____^

Guess he wasn't aware that Canadians are just Americans with a funny accent. Sure, we may have cheaper health care and tougher schools**, but we pay more for everything else even though the Cdn$ is now on par with the US$. You've probably seen Amyranth posting about rent -- she lives three hours south of me, in Calgary. Here in good ol' AB, your basic three-bedroom, two-bathroom house sells for around $430,000 - $450,000 in Edmonton and more like $500,000 in Calgary. SO you can imagine what rent costs up here. X_o

** S'true. A friend of mine graduated summa cum laude from the University of Arizona with a degree in English. She wanted to move here and get her Master's degree, until she found out how much upgrading she'd need to do just to qualify for admission. You guys have Ivy League, we have Snow League. ^_~

Is it time to go home yet???

It is really no problem toujours.

I laughed out loud when I read your story sister midnite.
It's so funny when people are mis-informed about different countries. My friend went to America years ago, and they were at some touristy thing and a couple of people noticed the Aussie accent and asked if it were true that people rode Kangaroos instead of driving cars.

And thanks Miss-T :P I am the biggest dag out. But I like being a dag, it's easier than caring too much about trivial things. You know, I actually don't watch Neighbours or Home and Away. I watched Neighbours up until a few months ago, when the massive change happened.

Fimble Star said...

They all contribute to writing the lyrics, its not like the lyrics to their songs are artistic and so Shakespearian that no one can come up with them besides really intelligent scholars.
You just take life experiences/emotions and write it down on a piece of paper.

toujours said...

i am fimble, but not for you. for you i'm all smiles. ^____^

Alot of artists, when popular, lend there name to products with little creative input. It will be interesting to see how popular Umbrella Academy will be when MCR rest/split up next year.

It is my personal opinion that Ray is the powerhouse behind MCR and I find it amusing that some people cannot handle kudos to be given to any band member other than Gerard.

Feet of clay will become visable to all very soon.

That's the second comment you've posted where I've printed it out and saved it. You really have a way of expressing how you feel (and how I feel). I admire that tremendously.

Will you come back and provide more insight to life? :)

sister midnite said...

Glad I could make you laugh, guys. =)

Isn't exploiting other people's lack of knowledge fun??

TBH, I'm surprised I haven't been brought up on treason yet. If you listen to anybody from Canada, they'll tell you that we're loved all over the world. Why? Because we're polite, and write letters instead of stomping mud-holes in the asses of people who deserve it!

Black Jacket, I liked your kangaroo comment. I wonder if there are people in out there who think that all we North Americana eat is apple pie and McDonald's?

Deadmonton isn't exactly the most happening place to live, but the mountains aren't that far away. I like them, but ::whispers::

... they scare me a little, too.

See? I can stand up to mean Anon's, give Mayo a rough time, and polish my boots while typing. But show me a mountain at night and I'll go all 'I see dead people' on you.

I is weird, I know. ^_~
((Whoo hoo! I can go home now!))
TTYL, everyone!

MissTottenham said...

I agree anon. Although Gerard as a showman is the MCR member I admire the most, I've always felt that (and don't you Frank fans bawl me out) Ray is really the talent behind the band.

Martha Smith-Jones said...

Hey is Kapunua still here or does any one have an email or her. I think I really need to talk to her. I can't get Lj to work for so I don't know how to get a hold of her.

Anonymous said...

I agree Gerard was an excellent showman and he has to be given credit for presenting the band to best effect however he would not have been able to do this if he did not have a good product to present.

toujours said...

anon, the umbrella academy will remain popular -- perhaps not as popular as it is now, true (the first issue sold out and had to be re-printed within a month of it's publication) -- because it is a well-written book, with fantastic art and a good team working on it. it is not a vanity publication.

there's no doubt in my mind that the songs from tbp are the result of the combined creativity of five extremely talented individuals. i you think i'm just a brainless gerard-worshipper, you couldn't be more wrong.
the five men in this band astound me with their talent and kindness and misc. other extraordinary attributes.

but the idea that gerard didn't write the lyrics? that he's just some pretty frontman?

*pshaw*
i don't put much stock in conspiracy theories.

Fimble Star said...

oh tj i feel happy now that i make you smile butif you ever need to talk. just say fimble 3 times and i will appear lol.

please tell me you get that one surely hahahaha

MissTottenham said...

You people have probably noticed that I like to join in or start the light hearted banter on this site.

I'm not much of a one for the deep and meaningful stuff when others can do it so much better. Sdock10 and kapunua and most of you all write beautifully.

I've written a little on BC's blog so I'll share it here as it's probably the most I've waffled on.

I for one will be here until the end. I just dread to think what that end might entail, god forbid anything happens to any of them.

I agree with you paperheart. It's not just a sorrow in his eyes though. For me, when I look into Gerard's eyes, they are dead and soulless. They used to look full of a cheeky spirit. I just hope thet someday soon he manages to rid himself of whatever killed that spirit.

I too am not enamoured with this new Gerard. And I too long for the old days when it was so much easier to like this band without having all this baggage attatched.

Every new thing we witness regarding this band these days seems to drag my spirit down. I'm not a religious person but I pray for a good outcome.

I often wonder about other fans all over the world who are seeing all this through the same eyes as us and coming to the same conclusions. How do they cope with their feelings, who do they vent to. We are lucky to have each other but what about the others, do they give up or are most of them living in denial.

don't usually go on like this but I feel the need to say that with each passing day, sometimes I dread to swith on this computer to find out what they have done this time. Have you noticed that lately, it never seems to be good news.

There, I've got it off my chest.

oooohhhhhh black jacket wat big change. i aint watched it for a year but in that soap nothing ever really changes lol

Oh, they have new opening titles, some new sets, a newer version of the theme music, newer background music, half the street is leaving and new people are coming in (and I found our the other day that Harold is leaving too)and the actors there now are pretty bad and the story lines are so corny.

I wonder if there are people in out there who think that all we North Americana eat is apple pie and McDonald's?

When I was a kid I actually did used to think that :P
But now I know otherwise.

And as I said before, I think that the band do write the majority of the stuff. I'm sure that the lyrics are a collaboration of everyone's ideas. But I do think that they would have used just a little outside help, because it isn't uncommon for music artists to use outsiders.

For a long time I have considered Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge as a personal friend and I am desperately trying to hold onto that. When my mother died (her name is Rose) I had to choose her coffin. I chose one with a rose on the lid. Thank You for the Venom is my favourite song of all time. It helped me through many dark months-"Love is the red of the rose on your coffin door".
At the same time I cannot ignore what is happening to the band and I cannot help but acknowledge these changes and this includes information that we gather from time to time.
One of you has already congratulated Toujours for showing me up (!?!) for offering an opinion. This tells me that perhaps you are a different kind of fan than I am.

hey TJ just in support I think Gerard is quite capapble of writing lyrics, though I also believe that Ray is alot more integral to the whole writing than people realise, I think the music is very much his area ( you just need to hear him talk about it to realise he is very talented and accomplished in that area) I also believe he contributes a lot to the lyrics, perhaps the whole band give ideas but I think a lot of the final refining may be done by him.
Gerard is I would say more important than the anon allows but less than the media likes to infer.

when i finally caved in and bought the special edition tbp (about a month afterwards -- yes, i bought tbp twice. d'oh), when i finished reading the book, i felt compelled to listen to the entire cd again, immediately, because reading ray's section in the book made it like a brand new cd for me.
ray is all kinds of awesome, and i'll just leave it at that, lest we return to our fangirling again! :D

but when people make it out like gerard is nothing but the mcr poster boy? *grr* that's just as bad as thinking he walks on water.

and suggesting he's not the writer that i know he is? *double grr*

*ahem*
calming down, now. :)

I'm here, MJ, what's up? I just got home from training so I'm going tohave a shower before joining you guys once more.

Any news, you guys? On Elena or on Gerard?

Anonymous said...

I could do that xD

Mayo should think about posting soon. Even my high speed isn't wanting to get all this loaded.

My opinion on the lyrics and whatnot:

I do think that Gerard writes the lyrics and helps contribute the overall idea. Kinda like saying, "I want it to say this. And then I need this to be in there after you say that."

I think Ray is probably the mastermind behind what it ends up sounding like with some input from Frank. Mikey has to be there to provide the solid bottom and I would imagine Ray would help him get there.

Bob...BOB on the other hand is touched with the hand of God and needs no help with anything. He makes that shit up on the spot in the studio AND onstage. He's just...that...good.

Really, I have no idea what I'm talking about. Gerard could really be Ray, and Mikey could be God and Frank just stands there and looks cool. Bob oversees all of it, with the help of Worm of course. I don't know how they go about writing :)

What's that, LOTMS? Well, as MCR is now monetarily supporting MSI, they're not getting another penny out of my pocket, that's for sure. Which means nothing to them as they've got plenty of "pennies" anyway, but it's just on principle. Either way, I doubt they will make another album anyway so I guess I don't have to pay for MSI to continue playing no matter what.

The stupidest comment someone could possibly say who claimed to be a huge MCR fan

"Ray isnt important, he doesnt contribute anything to the band, only frank and Gerard do"

Last night, I had a dream...
I was hanging out with Mayo...
He was talking his usual jibberish...
Then I reached over, grabbed him, and gave him the most long and luscious kiss...

He started talking normally after that...

I had a dream about Mayo last night too. Only in mine he was a big chocolate "G". And I took a bite out of him.

He was delicious.

toujours said...

fimble, i sent all my little brothers packing, back to the enchanted forest. back to the mines with you! i said, and they grumbled and then agreed and marched off singing a happy little song.

*Is not a 'fangirl'*

Fangirls drool over their looks.

This kid drools over how they do some of the shit they do.

I listen and then listen, over and over again, to "Venom" and "WTTBP" to take in all of Bob's and Ray's skills. Then I listen to "YKWTDTGLUIP" (Who the hell tries to put capital letters to that?!) for Frank and then "Vampires" for Mikey.

I am in awe of the things they do.

I know you were joking, but it can't ever be said enough. :)

I had a dream about you people. I met a few of you but I could never see your faces, just the back of your heads. You all had long brown hair and I couldn't tell you apart and I felt so rude cos I'd just met you all and was having to say "remind me which one you are again".

Mayo mentioned a ghost that travels by here every once in a while in one of his P.S.'s.

But, Sdock. I think that's it.

He loves us, him, her, and it.
He hates, ignorance, fear, and doubt.
He misses youth and ghost*.
And wants time.

***If he misses "ghost". This may be Mayo.

***I don't like this post. It sounds bad. Whatever it is.

The Protagonist makes lovely images. I enjoy the light. I am particularly fond of Row of Lights, the mood and the line of it speaks to me and reminds me of wandering the streets at night alone. Your thoughtful gift is a treasure.

Anon, are you joining in on the game from earlier?

Anonymous said...

How old does one have to be before one begins missing one's "youth?" That word is in quotes because it's nebulous idea. I still have my youth.

I miss my childhood but in a way I don't, because it's still with me; it's mine and no one can take it away. It never really leaves. Btu youth? Still with me. Which is why I'm not in any rush to be doing anything I'm "supposed" to be doing, you know?

I think that maybe the way to hold onto your youth is to not burn through life at warp-speed, right?

capture this void said...

Is that Mayo?

Again with the lights, huh? I clearly remember reading an interview where Gerard said something about wandering the streets at night. Does anyone else remember this or am I going crazy?

That "ghost", I recall, was supposed to "find a way."

Find a way? Now of course I could be way off the mark and probably am, but that was always the first thing on my mind. It came amidst an awful lot of talk about Bert though, didn't it?

Thank god, Mayo.
