Best Friend

The brick and mortar embellishment
conceals despair.
I buried it in the backyard,
along with that old rag of a dog,
that I loved and held to my heart.
Passed on and by too fast for
my eyes and hands to grab tight.
And I wonder now, if I had held
just a bit tighter, would I have
a handful of fur rather than dirt
and hurt?

p.s. been body snatching...Mayo is Keyser Söze.

The brick and mortar embellishment
conceals despair.

Can you picture a brick and mortar embellishment? What does an "embellishment" signify? Does it need to be there, or is it something that's there for reasons other than hard, cold practical ones? What sort of "embelleshment" would "conceal despair?"

I buried it in the backyard,
along with that old rag of a dog,
that I loved and held to my heart.

That's pretty straightforward, although ask yourself what the narrator is burying. There are two nouns in this part.

Passed on and by too fast for
my eyes and hands to grab tight.

Have you ever had something slip away from you too soon?

And I wonder now, if I had held
just a bit tighter, would I have
a handful of fur rather than dirt
and hurt?

What's the narrator wishing s/he had done here? What would have happened if the narrator had done that act? What happened instead?

Mayo, I'm sorry for picking this apart, but there will always be a teacher-wannabe, pretentious liberal arts / literature major in me. In fact, she kind of makes up most of my being. Apologies.

Amyranth said...

However, I'm curious as to what was buried with the dog.

You have to let go. No matter how tight you want to keep holding on. As bad as we hate to, we have to let go to move on in our life. It doesn't mean you forget, but life goes on.

And Mayo, part of the masses still bitch and moan. Told ya the other day you can't please us all. Some want honesty, some want cryptic, some want poems, some hate metaphors....bunch of unsatisfied bitches!! :)

My last comment on the previous entry:

Someone earlier posted something to Mayo that I felt shouldn't get lost in the mix. I can't even remember who it was but I thought it was neat.

Mayo, last night you hung around for a few minutes and asked us if there was anything we'd like to ask you. (I did, and you were like a little Ouija board when you answered me. That's how I pictured you.) Someone today posed that same offer to you.

Mayo, is there anything you'd like to ask us? We'd be a good Magic 8 Ball or Ouija board. ^_^

Or perhaps you could just shut down your computer and get some rest, dream of squirrels or something. Whatever blows your hair back because I want to make clear, as much as we do like you (much of the time,) you're not obliged to post crap at our whim. And like you said, we don't require your validation. We just like your conversation sometimes.

Even still. We like each other's as well.

Hi ergo, anima, and whoever else I forgot. Miss T, I second that.

"You hold the answers deep within your own mind.
Consciously, you've forgotten it.

Whenever something is too unpleasant, to shameful for us

You can try to bury the past and the memories that go with it, but it always has a way of coming back to haunt you. Time goes by in a blink and before you know it, tomorrow is yesterday. Gone and over with, but the regrets, the pain, the hurt are all still there. And you wonder if you had tried a little bit harder or slowed yourself down just a bit, would you have something real and tangible to hold on to...instead of memories.

Analyzing poetry and art can be fun, but wears me out!!

Plus, one of my photo professors tried to analyze my final project [the hand one I posted on the last blog] and it really pissed me off.

I told him that maybe he was projecting his own feelings to my work. Sometimes with art we are not necessarily seeing what the author/artist is protraying. Sometimes it can mean nothing at all. Sometimes we will never get it. That's what I love.

But when someone really wants us to listen, it gets really hard to help when you do not understand what he/she is seeking.
