Today on my way home from class, I stopped off at the petrol station for some petrol. I paid on my card which wasn’t a lot, and then as I was getting into my car, I saw an old man walking past the building. He had a red and green stripy jumper which was frayed at the ends. He was also wearing some jeans that were dirty and had holes all over.
I sat there and became intrigued by him because I didn’t know what he was doing, so as I sat there and watched him, he continued doing what he set out to do.
He walked past the trash cans and first picked out a cup with some drink still in it (one of the cups that you get from burger king that has coke in it). He then walked over to the next trash can and pulled out the end of a half eaten sandwich. In my shock horror, he ate it and then went to sit on the wall to drink the drink he had found.
I felt sad, I wanted to give him my last $4 that I had but I was told when I was younger that you should never give people money, you should give them something they need or can use because that way, if they had an addiction, they would not be able to use the money for their addiction. So I went into the shop and bought a chicken sandwich from their deli counter and then walked out of the building.
The guy was still sat at the wall drinking his drink so I walked up to him and asked him if he would like this sandwich. He thanked me and said that he was hungry.
I should of felt good after that, doing something for someone else but all I could think of is where his next meal will come from or where in fact he will sleep tonight.

Don't let anyone tell you how to live your life. Hold your head up high and be proud of who you are. If you've had a shitty day and you feel like people just don't want you to be happy, and when you find yourself struggling to make it through the day, just keep on believing and keep the faith. Also, from personal experience, don't push people away. When they say they want to help and that they are there for you, let them in. Believe me, I know how fucking scary that thought is, but don't shut others out.

I'm not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. I have made small mistakes and really big, fucking scary mistakes. Would I change those mistakes and blunders?
No. Wanna know why?
Because they make me - me. They help make up the person that I am, what I've learned the hard way. Hopefully I've learned from my mistakes and have become a better person for it. And, hopefully I don't repeat those same mistakes. Although, sometimes I repeat variations of certain ones, but I'm working on that. :)

Electric Blue
…today I saw a ulysses butterfly it was in our yard and settled to feed on our hibiscus. They really are fantastically beautiful things, the electric blue is amazing, however as they sit with their wings closed they are rather nondescript and dull. Sometimes people are like that, from the outside they seem unappealing but within there hides an amazing beauty for those lucky enough to see it. I hope you appreciate beauty in all things, and look for it perhaps where others miss it.

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL.
I read your post again and suddenly without warning memories of construction paper filled my head. I remembered all the lop-sided flowers my girls made when they were young. Bright blue, yellow and pink flowers that were cut out with blunt end scissors would fill the windows to decorate for Easter. An occasional bunny was attempted but those usually ended up looking like creatures from a horror movie. Flowers were so much easier. I can close my eyes and hear the paper being cut into petals. I can smell the Elmer’s glue squirted on in huge blobs to attach each misshapen petal to form the flowers. We had a huge arts and crafts box full of wonderful items just waiting for their imaginations to turn into something wonderful. In my mind I see my daughters, as they once were, small, blond little girls sitting on the floor surrounded by scraps of paper and other art supplies. They would create their masterpieces then proudly show each other. Oh and Lord the messes that would ensue if the glitter made an appearance. Now, the box is forgotten. I’m not really sure where it even is anymore. The few flowers so lovingly created that survived are faded and dusty and high on a shelf they sit. Time marches on, so many things get left behind.

Of course I understand that my daughters are growing up and have lives of their own. But understanding doesn’t make it any easier to accept. I miss my little girls in their frilly Easter dresses. As for manga amy, I had all of the volumes except for maybe two that i was missing from the SuperS series.
I have watched the Stars episodes, and I could see why they were banned from being shown in TV here, but I still think they should have played it regardless. It was pretty good

i loved the way it was so much deeper in the manga. i hated what dic did it on tv.
I did too tj. I hated the editing they did with the episodes, but other than that I had no complaints. I just wished they played the Stars season. That's the only one they haven't showed here yet, and it's been close to ten years since the show premiered.
A while back, I emailed a few magazines asking if they knew if the season was ever gonna be released here.
BC, I've seen Stars, and I agree with Teej. The manga to anime translation was completely fucked up, they took out a lot of elements in the anime that were fantastic in the manga.
However, I did think it was funny the way Usagi and Rei would bicker all the time. They took a way more comedic turn with the anime than they did with the manga.
I DID read however that Naoko is hideously embarassed with the manga, she doesn't consider it her best work.
some of the episodes they left off the air here in the states made no sense -- like an episode where usagi and mamoru babysat, apparently because the baby was naked and peed on them. ridiculous.
that's a shame though that she's embarrassed by it -- it had a purity that really made it stand out.
She shouldn't be embarrassed. I thought the manga was great. Too bad it's hard to find now though. I hope they reprint it someday.
Rei and Serena bickering all of the time is hilarious, it added some humor to the storyline. My favorite one though would have to be when the people from the Black Moon invaded and the whole story behind Crystal Tokyo.

well it's been a full night of worrying, actually. i went over and read up on what's going on with kapunua's family, and at the same time i was texting with a co-worker who is sick and yet still wanted to come into work. her girlfriend and i convinced her to stay home and go to the doctor tomorrow, which is a relief.
and then my stepdad is going in for surgery in the morning. it isn't anything too major -- he has a bone spur in his shoulder (and a torn rotator cuff in the other, it was a coin toss to see which shoulder got operated on first!), but he has a very bad reaction to anesthesia. the hospital knows this, and they have drugs they can and do give him to counteract the side effect, but it's not always certain, so he might have to stay overnight.
toss in a little thwarted romance with a shy guy who couldn't talk to me directly -- it was like a bolluxed-up version of cyrano de bergerac, i swear -- and you have the makings of a very full weekend!

i never thought i'd be actually grateful for the arrival of monday.

in any case, i hope you are looking forward to monday, too, though for happier, less-stressful reasons than mine, to be sure!

shit, i meant to say, i had a chinese takeaway last night, and it was salty as fuck! tasty but salty! this was quite late as well. so i went to bed and all my dreams were about trying to find a drink. a cold drink. i was so thirsty! i was in people's houses raiding their fridges and drinking all these drinks, but they weren't hitting to spot! (funny that, it would be because i was dreaming)! it was awful, and then i woke up and got myself a pint of water! lovely! went back to sleep and then i dreamt about date rape! seriously!
so moral of the story...avoid salty food before bedtime! i think i ate my yearly quota of sodium in one meal!!

A True Australian ghost story
This story happened a while ago in Brisbane, and even though it sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock tale, it's true. John Bradford, a Sydney University student, was on the side of the road hitch hiking on a very dark night and in the midst of a storm.
The night was rolling on and no car went by. The storm was so strong he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him. Suddenly he saw a car slowly coming towards him and stopped. John, desperate for shelter and without thinking about it, got in the car and closed the door, just to realise there was nobody behind the wheel and the engine
wasn't on!
The car started moving slowly. John looked at the road and saw a curve approaching. Scared, he started to pray, begging for his life. Then, just before he hit the curve, a hand appeared through the window and turned the wheel. John, paralysed with terror, watched how the hand repeatedly came through the window but never harmed
him.
Shortly thereafter John saw the lights of a pub down the road so, gathering strength, jumped out of the car and ran to it. Wet and out of breath, he rushed inside and started telling everybody about the horrible experience he had just experienced. A silence enveloped the pub when everybody realised he was crying and...... wasn't drunk.
Suddenly two other people walked into the same pub. They, like John, were also wet and out of breath. Looking around and seeing John Bradford sobbing at the bar, ne said to the other, "Look, Bruce.......there's that f*cking idiot that got in the car while we were pushing it."

All this talk of dreams made me remember the one I had last night about a psycho Jay Mohr. He hosted the NASCAR awards ceremony two years ago (not sure about last year) and he's kind of like, well, you don't know if he'll be super funny or if he's gonna spaz out and start crying or something. Really, he had me worried there for a minute or two. Anyway, he was trying to beat me up in my dream! I was trying to hide from him and I was sick and it was just awful! Then I woke up and was like, "Why in the hell was I hiding from that dude? I could totally take him down!" O_o
I rarely ever remember my dreams so when I do and I wake up before the ending then I am all bummed out. Like watching a movie and never seeing the last ten minutes. It sucks! Oh well!

Guys, those of you with well-wishes, thank you.
Things aren't going so well on either front, and that's really all I wish to say here.
It seems I can talk about things like this at my journal or on the porch, but there's a reason why I didn't write about it here. You know how it goes when I write something, especially something difficult, scary, or whatever.
People turn it into something uglier than it already is, and I don't need any more negative stuff going on. I can be really stupidly superstitious about that stuff, so I was trying to avoid the nastiness that will follow from some of the people here. I can't deal with it right now.
For those of you who are sincere and who send their thoughts, thank you. :) But I would prefer to keep it all off of this blog if that's not too much trouble.
Mayo, S(S)S, I wanna tell you something funny about my Dad.
Now I'm sure you've both got a dad (or at least I hope that you do; if not, then I'm very sorry because they are good to have around, especially in times like these,) so you'll probably have heard some variation of this before, right?
Or maybe it's just typical of old school NY dads, who knows.
Anyway, when things look really bleak, my Dad tries so hard to be comforting by way of turning philosophical in his own particular way. I can just about recite the things he says. The thing is that it always does cheer me up, and today on the way home from dropping Haku off, I nearly had to laugh. Even though one would think that what he's saying is really depressing.
When things like this happen, and everyone is assuming the worst (and indeed, the worst looks more and more plausible,) this is the speech that my Dad gives, paraphrased:
"You know, no matter what happens, you gotta understand that you're doing your best. And that (whoever is the subject of worry) had a good life, and part of that is because of you (or Mom, or whoever else is involved.) And I know it feels really bad and everyone's going to cry if the worst should happen, so you cry and then you get over it, because what can you do? You have to get on with your life. Everybody has to go sometime. And when you're crying, it's not for (whoever,) it's because of you, not having them around anymore."
(And here's where my Dad's own brand of philosophy comes in.)
"I mean, look at these two women a few years ago, right? There they were, walking down the street, when a drunk driver jumps the curb and his car pins them to a brick wall, and they're both dead. Or that poor girl, who was walking down the street selling girl scout cookies, and a brick falls on her head. These things just happen! So you have to live your life. Because you never know. You never, ever know."
They all end just like that: "You never, ever know."
Still, when you're right, you're right.

yeah worse luck, they have reports due from the teachers today, and I brought up that we have no assessment as the exam is today, so they kindly gave us until tomorrow.

I informed the class of how I expected some of them to go, and they immediately said "are you saying we're dumb?!"
I actually can see all of then could do it, but you know if you sit and draw on you arm/your neighbours leg/ stare into space/ write notes/ draw pictures, instead of actually DOING any maths, the likelihood of being able to do it in a test is very slim

Did everyone have a good a day/night? I hope so!
How did I scare myself, now, some of you may be wondering. Well, let me start at the beginning.
Some of you may have heard of a little festival we have, here in NOLA, every fall. This little festival is called "The Voodoo Music Experience" (or Voodoo Fest for short).
For awhile it seemed Voodoo 2009 was in some serious trouble. There was a scheduling dispute. Voodoo Fest is usually held the last FULL weekend of October; however, this year Voodoo Fest organizers decided to hold it Oct. 30 ~ Nov. 1 (Halloween weekend). Why? Because it's Halloween weekend and it's close enough to being a "full weekend"!
However, City Park officials had scheduled 4 weddings for that weekend despite Voodoo organizers having cleared that weekend with another City Park official. (Lack of communication, anyone?)
Yes, the arguing commenced. The finger pointing ensued. The blame game was played.
But, this story does have a HAPPY ending! City Park officials contacted all 4 families ~ who had planned a wedding in City Park that weekend ~ and they all argreed to reschedule!!!
Yes, all 4 families understood just how important VOODOO Fest is to the city of New Orleans and they were happy to help. Isn't that wonderful!!!! Yes, I think it is!
Now, the scaring myself part comes into play with an announcement made today by Voodoo Fest organizers. The first band, and only band so far, has signed on to play Voodoo 2009. That band is....

Andy Hallett, 33, who starred as Lorne ("the Host") on the TV series Angel, died of heart failure last night at age 33, according to his agent. The actor passed away at Cedars-Sinai Hospital after a five-year battle with heart disease.
Hallett, born in from the Cape Cod village of Osterville, Mass., appeared on more than 70 episodes of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff, Angel, between 2000 and 2004. The accomplished actor was also a musician and sang two songs ("Lady Marmalade" and "It's Not Easy Being Green") on the Angel: Live Fast, Die Never soundtrack, released in 2005.
mj, I didn't know about that. That's really sad, and he was so young too. Lorne was a pretty great character on Angel, even though I haven't seen all of the episodes :(

LISA UPDATE:
I just talked to J and Lisa is out of ICU. They have removed all of the "tubes" and she is off all monitors except for the heart monitor. She was especially happy to have the tube going down her nose, into her lungs, removed.
She is still on oxygen, of course.
She was able to sit up in a chair for about 2 hours today. Still no word on when she'll be going home, though she is continuing to improve!
It turns out she did NOT have double pneumonia.
They now know what happened. She had a little coughing spell the night before she collapsed. Neither she nor Jen thought much about it at the time. They thought it was just the usual sinus cough.
It turns out that the coughing tore and blew out a lung! Over the course of the night both her lungs filled with blood.
I don't even want to think about what would have happened to Lisa if Jen hadn't been there to call for help...
Since they know Lisa has suffered a mild heartattack (although they're still not sure when), she will need to have an angiogram (heart catheterization) once she is recovered from this.
Jen said to thank everyone for their prayers, thoughts, good vibes and well wishes!!!! She says she knows they're helping. She knows that's what helped Lisa make it through that first night in ICU when she went into full respiratory arrest.
So, a big THANK YOU from Lisa and Jen!!!!
Jen is holding up about as well as can be expected. She promised me she is "trying" to take care of herself! Yeah, she better be!

my stepdad came through his surgery very well. it was a bit stressful getting him home and settled (because he is such a big baby lol), but it's done. when i came online a little earlier and caught up here, i was so pleased to see how many people wished him well, so i went and told him. it surprised him that you guys would do that, and made him smile.

Special thanks to Wendy for doing the Lisa update tonight. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to. When I talked to Jen earlier we had a wicked thunder storm rolling in. The kind where both my brave dogs cried to come inside. Thunder and lightening scares them. Now we're just waiting for the second band of storms to come through so I'm not sure how long my Internet will last.

when you were a kid, did you ever get told to not pick stuff up off the ground? i sure did, and i've never listened, and i've never stopped!
my ex was the same way, and we had quite a few miscellaneous dishes around our apartment filled with what we had carried home -- small plastic toys, feathers, coins, interesting rocks, marbles, beads, bedraggled ribbons, nuts and bolts, flattened orphan jewelry...
right now in my purse there is a green plastic bead in the shape of a heart, a clip off a key chain, and a little faded pink silk snap pocket bag (picked up outside the stratford theatre in england) where i stash the most special and magical items, such as a quarter i once found, minted in my birth year and mostly covered with some sort of red paint.
coats and jackets with pockets always end up with little objects living in them. when i was in high school, the inside breast pocket held a little black & white photocopied and laminated portrait of lord byron, right against my heart.
if it catches my eye, i'll snatch it up, sometimes without even missing a step. that's how i got the nickel from the middle of the crosswalk back in seattle.
i don't pick up gooey things (ick) so i've become pretty skilled at the lightning-quick identification glance. i am an adept forager.
today i was leaning against the trunk of the work car, lazing about in the sun with my co-workers on our morning break. i was looking around, at the yard ornaments and the trees and the cars driving by on the road in front of the job site and my shoes and the driveway gravel, and i spotted a little black stone, polished bright by tires.
it had something on it, or maybe it was a trick of the light, so i bent over to pick it up (this always makes people ask me what i'm doing, like it's unusual for someone to suddenly reach down and pluck something off the ground *tcha*) and you know what? it wasn't a trick of the light or a fleck of dirt, it was a little shape indented into the stone, made by the contours of the stone and its natural fractures.
it was a little polished black stone with a heart on it, smackdab on the center of it. the whole stone no bigger than a discarded piece of chewing gum.
went into my pocket of course. *grin*
i showed it to everyone -- it's a little bit of magic to find something so perfect, so unexpected, i just had to share even if the only looks i received were bemused and perplexed ones. my mom's reaction was the funniest one, though -- she kept expressing her amazement that i had even seen it. "what made you even look down?" she kept asking.
maybe it was waiting for me.
maybe i like to look for little surprises.
maybe i'm just a scavenger at heart. *grin*

Really just wanted to say I hope TJ that your stepdad is doing alright. And Kapu that your grandma and poor pup are doing better too. Any time something medical is up in the air it's like the world stops. Yet people around you don't seem to be aware of it. It's terrifying. Theres no way to describe it. You just have to keep hanging in there. I'm sorry I haven't caught up properly, but I do hope that everything will get better for you guys, your loved ones, soon. Truly.
So fuckin awesome that Lisa is doing so much better! Shit that was scary! And I hope she is still giving the hospital staff grief -it is the best way to ensure that they don't forget her now that she is out of ICU! Very very awesome to hear that! I hope we get more good news from everyone else soon too! And take care of yourself Jen! Don't forget to take care of yourself!

So I kinda did something stupid earlier. And before you roll your eyes and say “what’s new?” don’t say it. I mean I try very hard not to do stupid things anymore. That whole I’m an adult thing, you know. But tonight I couldn’t help it. There was a massive thunderstorm rolling in and I wanted to experience it. I’ve told you before I love the damn things. The churning clouds, the flashes of lightening and the roar of the thunder. So anyway I was sitting reading a book when the first flash of lightening lit up the sky. I counted the seconds until I heard the thunder so I knew the storm was close and getting closer. It was moving fast. By the time I overruled the part of my brain that was telling me not to do what I wanted to do a clap of thunder rattled the windows. Shit, I got goose bumps. So being that no one was home except for a sleeping husband, and believe me a bomb could go off and he wouldn’t stir, I snuck upstairs. Now I’ve done this little maneuver before but not for years. I took off the screen of the hall window and out on the roof I went. The show being performed by the lightening was breathtaking. I suppose I should mention that our house is on a hill and lightening strikes are not all that unusual. But did that matter? Oh hell no. I wanted to be part of that storm. It matched my mood. Then the wind picked up. So there I was out on the roof with the storm surrounding me and I felt so alive. I thought back to the storm TJ got to experience when she visited. Not that I took her out on the roof, mind you. It’s one thing to do dumb ass things alone but quite another to put other people in harms way. Mayo, I wish you could have been there. Okay not that I really would have wanted you out of the roof but I would have loved to share the feeling with you. So anyway then it happened. There was a blinding flash of light and instantaneously the crash of thunder. The hair on the back of my neck stood up and I closed my eyes waiting. Yep, a tree on our property was struck by the lightening. Wow, it was so bright and so loud and so powerful. It was also a sign for me to get my ass off the roof and back in the house. Still I’m glad I got to experience it. It made me realize the brutal beauty of nature. So I crawled back inside, put the screen in place and went back downstairs. But my body still hummed with the remnants of the sheer power of the storm. It was a wonderful memory I will keep to myself. Well I guess you get to keep it now too.

I had a new kitten i was taking care of but our dog hurt him. broke his ribs and they punctured his lungs so we had to put him to sleep. That was last week.
Ahahaha! Well, that is the best thing to be doing with ya hand MJ. ...Especially if ya butt itches. ;p
And I think I'll just dump the cup. Probably safer. I think everybody our side has been getting sick lately. It's either really hot, or really cold. And whomever is in charge of that, I think needs some meds. Cuz they are All Over The Place. Makin everybody nuts (and gooey. Aka:sickly. Yuk.)

Poor dogs, they mean well. My dog really loved the kitten we watched for a while, some time back. He missed my cat. And we very narrowly escaped that kind of accident. I'm really sorry MJ.
