Well tempered.

“Something with poison in it, but attractive to the eye, and soothing to the smell.”
-Wicked Witch of the West, The Wizard of Oz

Once upon a fork in the road...

In the corner a ratty green sofa sits butted up against a water ring stained end table. There are at least four three inch burn holes in the snagged, stained fabric. Heavy, dark drapes cover the window. The time of day is a complete mystery to anyone who has spent any time here and time is all but spent.

The sofa, the room smells like piss and acid. Pizza boxes, broken plastic forks and unwanted, half-eaten food are surrounded by empty beer bottles and overfilled ash trays. A bent spoon sits on the coffee table.

Around the corner, the kitchen cupboards are bare, the fridge empty. It’s water and anti-acids for dinner; anything else would be a waste.

“Have you seen your family?”

“Well, you should. I know they miss you.”

The visit was brief and I was grateful to have had the opportunity, but for some reason I can’t help but be thankful for decisions I made long ago. I emerged almost unscathed, at least in that respect. I wish there was more I could do.

"Call me if you need anything."

In that dark room past, present and future all at once delivered upon us both, redemption.

"Yeah, I will."

p.s. it is round there aren't any sides.

ergoproxy said...

Amy I make this quite often, you can fill it with anything
stuffed pide
my usual filling is ground beef (traditionally lamb) fried with 2 tsp cinnamon and, 1 tsp cumin, sultanas and pine nuts, wet it with a bit of tomato paste and water, you want it quite dry but together, mix in shredded spinach and after you pinch it shut you sprinkle over feta

ergoproxy said...

I think they do, and in some cases, that will be the only claim to fame.

Unless they're celebrity kids, like Apple, Moses, Mowgli, Zuma, or Moon Unit.

amy you need to write a book of baby names

ergoproxy said...

I think

Hugo Yorick Way, though Yorick could be shortened to "Yor"

Amyranth said...

Hugo Yor Way and I'll go mine! Ha!

Okay, that just earned me a kick in the teeth from Anonymous Way.

ergoproxy said...

then the second could be

Iago Myron Way, though they'd shorten Myron to just "My"

Amyranth said...

But really, here we are talking about names, when for the first 2 years of the kid's life, his name will be "Awlookit'imsocuuuuute!".

For the next 5 or 6 easy, it'll be "Hey you, Get OFF that!"

Hahahaha Amy. That so reminds me of the Burger King phrase: "Have It Your Way."

ergoproxy said...

Amy you still got that hell bound handbasket?

ergoproxy said...

Amy there is a period in there they are called "NO!"

Amyranth said...

Ergo, we're both on a road to get our asses kicked.

How about Intel Pentium Way?

Or, something a little closer to home like "Fender Precision Way"? Or even "Micron Fineliner Way"?

ergoproxy said...

ah BC
that would be the third boy

Harvey Tyor Way

ergoproxy said...

Amy you are reading things in front of you aren't you?

Amyranth said...

Ergo, yeah.

They say that in some cultures you name the baby after the first thing you see when it's born.

Elena I just remember we were both in a bit of shock seeing as I was a month early, and having a caesar, I just remember asking him where my legs were, honestly they felt like they were out sideways, not straight. And they were playing Patsy Cline.
And DON'T look in the big light reflectors, they are like mirrors!

elena said...

Flighty was exactly a month early and he was out of town on a fishing trip. I knew where he was so I called the local police and had them go get him.

I hated Stormys birth - caesar

They stuck that huge needle in my spine and then I was numb from the neck down and couldn't feel myself breathing. I freaked.

Sunshine's birth was a walk in the park. Even though she weighed 10 pounds 9 ounces. LOL

mayo,

so tonight is my last good night for awhile. i was kind of hoping to have one more post from you before going, but it seems it's not meant to be!

i'll be here for a little bit tomorrow, of course -- i'm sure i'll have to drag myself off the computer so i can get to the bus station on time in the evening. probably have to pry my fingers off the keyboard. *grin*

thursday night, when i'm sitting there in my room in seattle, wherever that might be, it's going to be so strange not to be here, not to close the day out with a good night to you. the thought of it actually frightens me, a little. it makes it seem so much more lonely.

but nothing can happen for me as long as i just sit around. my life is in a tangle and i need to straighten it out, i need to learn how to truly stand on my own. it seems so huge, and so daunting. part of me wants to just hang on to whatever i can and hide.

but there's another part of me that wants so bad to have the strength to do this, to be someone who can take her life in her own hands and shape it. to be that strong.

i won't know if i do until i just go. i won't know until i try.

so maybe it's good that i won't have internet for awhile. maybe i really need to be alone to do this.

but you know i'm going to miss you, mayo.

good night. be well.

I hope you're well sugarplum *blows kisses and special hugs*

Today was a strange day for me. No, nothing really different or particularly interesting happened but the day was sorta 'off". I felt like I was doing all the things I was supposed to do, being the person I was supposed to be, and yet it was like I was living someone else's life. Like I was playing a part in a movie. Okay I realize that makes no sense at all and I can't explain it any better than that. I don't know why it felt like that. But I've just decided to accept it and stop giving the whole thing too much thought. Hopefully tomorrow I'll feel like I'm back to being me. Crap that all just sounds weird, doesn't it? Maybe lack of sleep is finally catching up with me. I don't think so though. See, I'm thinking about it again. Okay, I'm officially stopping now. On to other things.

Now I'm sitting here wondering what other things. Really nothing else happened today. The day was weird, I'm confused and that's about it.

So was your day nice? I'd like to think it was so that's how I'll imagine it. You spent the day enjoying the warmth of friends and loved ones who surrounded you. Yep, it was a good day and now you sit and smile feeling very content. There, I like that scenario.

Think I'll go read now. I'll get lost in the story of someone else's life for a bit. You know maybe my brain just decided to take the day off. Yeah, that' probably it. Hey, you take care.

Night Mayo

Elena (insert what I put here last night)

The day is gone, and all its sweets are gone!
Sweet voice, sweet lips, soft hand, and softer breast,
Warm breath, light whisper, tender semitone,
Bright eyes, accomplished shape, and lang'rous waist!
Faded the flower and all its budded charms,
Faded the sight of beauty from my eyes,
Faded the shape of beauty from my arms,
Faded the voice, warmth, whiteness, paradise—
Vanished unseasonably at shut of eve,
When the dusk holiday—or holinight
Of fragrant-curtained love begins to weave
The woof of darkness thick, for hid delight;
But, as I've read love's missal through today,
He'll let me sleep, seeing I fast and pray.

Mayo,

How are things?

In my dream last night, your next post was titled, "Clean up on aisle 4."

And clusterfuck figured in there somewheres.

Make of that what you will.

Personally, I was curious to know what it was you were supposed to be "cleaning up" and why aisle 4.

?

Happy Monday, Mayo. If you find yourself holding a mop, a broom, a dustpan, a shovel, a sponge, well, then I guess this will all make sense to you today. If not, oh well, oh well, oh well...

And don't 4get to watch for the 4.

4 sure.

Love to YOU Always,
S

p.s. Just a little spillage.

Hello, everyone!

Hope you guys are doing well and had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday, and to my non-American friends, a wonderful weekend!

Thank you to all that sent good wishes and get wells after my bump on the head. I'm doing good, but keeping an eye on it. I'm pretty hard-headed :), so I think it will be fine.

Take care, and be thankful for those you love and are loved by. You never know when they won't be there anymore.

SS,

I hope you had a wonderful holiday and/or weekend as well. You know you are missed, I don't have to tell you that, but I'm going to anyway.

You Are Missed.

Take care,

Love,
L.

Mayo,

Hope you also had a great holiday and/or weekend. I know I haven't been here much in quite a while, but that doesn't mean you are "out of sight, out of mind." Let us know how you are, ok? Even if it's a "Hi, I'm fine. Life is good. Gotta get the oil in the car changed. Bye!" that works too!

Take care,
Love,
L.

Mayo

Holy crap I just had a whole comment written and Blogger ate it. Well I shall not be stopped. I'm on a mission so I'll just write this again....

Hey, here we go again. It's Monday, the start to a new week but it's more than that, it's the start to a new month. Okay, Mayo go out today and make your mark on the world. Yeah, I'm totally cheering you on. See I would go out and do that myself but since I'm gonna be selling books today I think the chance of that is pretty slim. But wait, maybe I'll do my part by selling a book to someone and it will change their life. Might happen, right?

Yep, I need more coffee.

Okay everyone let's get out there and make this a great day and a great month. (promise I'll take it down a notch after my second cup of coffee)

Love ya all...

Elena (Mayo you know what goes here)

well, it's not sticking any, which is a good thing considering we'll be on the road after dark, but i haven't seen december snow for a long time. in seattle, it usually snows but once a year, in january or february. this is nice!

okay, last day with the computer. let's see if i can't line up a room and a bed for thursday night!

Pink Bubble, TJ!

Well, I am going to get my tree today, whoop whoop! Did I ever tell you all my tree neurosis? Well, it goes like this. I so much hate getting rid of my tree at the end of the season, that each year I pretend I'm getting the same one. This way its feelings aren't hurt when I get rid of it. I just tell it "See you next year" and then when I get it the next year I'm like, "See, I told you!"

*cough*

So anyway, I hope you guys all get a nice tree for the holiday. ^_^

Then tomorrow I'll probably make my cards out and send them on Wednesday. This whole "holiday" thing is time-consuming!

Mayo and S(S)S, did you guys get your trees yet? Which kind do you like? Most of my family gets Frasier Firs but I prefer balsam. I think it smells better, they are usually more compact, and the name is a lot more fun to say. Balsam. Balsam. Balsam. It stops making sense after a while.

As do I!

Later all!

Jules,

You just made me think of something funny. When I was in kindergarten or 1st grade, I can remember being in the Christmas program at school and our class had to sing songs. Well, One of the songs was called "The Littlest Christmas Tree" or something like that and it was something about it being a tiny tree and it didn't get picked by any families so it's feelings were hurt and so it ran away. (Run-on sentence much?) That song would almost make me cry everytime we sang it. I didn't like it. Can't you just imagine me being 5 yrs old with long hair and my little Rudolph sweatshirt not singing a word because my lips were poked out too far? Yep.

Awww! Poor Cwwwissttmahhh Twweee!

I'm keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. You'll do just fine!

Hey K

I have no idea what to do about a Christmas tree this year. With 3 kittens in the house I know what they will do to it. I can just picture little kitten heads sticking out from the branches. Got to give it more thought!

Hi Smoke

Just saw you. Having a good day?

Smoke said...

Hi Elena! Yep, good so far. Just trying to get back in the groove at work. Boooo. No fun.

Hope your day is going great, too!

See you later!

Elena: Oh, no. Yeah, that's really rough. Kittens + Tree = madness and damage. O_O I think that throughout history, back to the times of domesticating cats and then pagans bringing trees in for the Yule, no one has ever thought of a solution to that dilemma.

Princess, that song would make me cry to this day. I do that thing, what's it called? When you assign human emotions to inanimate objects? I do that to the point where it affects my rationale and my decisions. I will hold on to a piece of paper if someone tells me it would be sad if I threw it away.

Along that same vein, I have to take my car Shinigami when I get my tree. You know, the big green Caddy? I have to. Have to. Actually, it is my Dad's car now; he drives it on short drives where he's sure it won't conk out. (Remarkably, the car--an 8 cylinder--still gets about 21 MPG.) Well, it's always been Shinigami and I going to get the Yule Tree. Shinigami will feel hurt and left out if I don't take him on the tree-trek.

Ronin the Elantra understands this, fortunately.

O_o

If I could just put a force field around my tree. Yeah that would work.

Hiya Mayo. I hope you're doing well.

I haven't been around lately. Turbo busy and stuff like that has pulled me in different directions. It's good. Helps me re-prioritize things in my life.

Before I get back to doing my thing, I just wanted to thank you for keeping this space open. I've met some amazing people here, learned all sorts of interesting things, and most of all learned about myself. That's a priceless gift you've given me.

I've cried 'til I've laughed and laughed 'til I've cried here.

So, from the bottom of my mangled heart, I say thank you.

See ya 'round town! :)

Steel Drums Co
