Your obituary won't mention you have a huge house and a plasma t.v.

My Grandma used to say "You only get so many words when you're born and once you've used them up...that's it."

She said the same thing about steps too.

"Once they're gone you don't get anymore."

Words and steps, I think she meant that they are the measure of a life.

She was a cool lady.

p.s. and in those last few moments they won't occur to you either.

Did Mayo delete some of his old posts from september?

I haven't been on this blog for a long time and the 'looking glass' riddle remined me of some of his posts which I can't seem to find anymore.

"Parallel illusions are only viewable in the dimmest light"

and

"It's all smoke and mirrors when it hits the back of my throat"

hallo, amyranth. wishes for much success on that test.

I took the test already, and I either owned it, or got owned by it. I finished with 40 minutes left in the hour and a half they give us.

I probably failed hardcore.

About the crazy religious lady threatening to protest at it, you mean? Yeah, heard about that at work today.

Anyone who would contemplate doing that to the victim's family after everything they've already been through has no soul.

There was a boy
A very strange enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far, very far
Over land and sea
A little shy
And sad of eye
But very wise
Was he

And then one day
A magic day he passed my way
And while we spoke of many things, fools and kings
This he said to me
"The greatest thing
You'll ever learn
Is just to love
And be loved
In return"

I work at a small alternative clothing store on Nantucket Island, MA and the other day, we were playing Revenge on the stereo system. A woman of about 40 or so walks in and asks after a second if what we're playing is MCR. I say yes and she says that one of her friends from work, Nicole (she forgot her last name) is engaged to one of the band's best friends. Their wedding is very soon and the whole band is invited. I was naturally very excited but I couldn't get any more names out of her as she had been off work for 8 weeks due to a horseback riding injury.

Just A Man

Did they tell you you’re a prophet
Or an angel in disguise
Did they show you gold and silver
So bright they burned your eyes
But when the sun goes down
And no one is around

Do you still feel like an angel
Broken halo in your hand
Or have you finally realized
That you are just a man

You stand on the busy sidewalk
Downtown in the rain
The only time you can afford to cry
Let the water hide your pain
And you swallow your pride
Keep the real you inside

Do you still feel like an angel
Broken halo in your hand
Or have you finally realized
That you are just a man

Just scream to be heard
You’re only flesh and blood
Just scream
You’re only flesh and blood

Do you still feel like an angel
Broken halo in your hand
Or have you finally realized
That you are just a man

You are just…

A man

How women got the right to vote.

This is why we vote: Because we can!

The women were innocent and defenseless. And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and with their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of "obstructing sidewalk traffic." They beat Lucy Burn, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded the "Night of Terror" on November 15, 1917 (a mere 87 years ago), when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote. For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food -- all of it colorless slop -- was infested with worms. When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

So, refresh my memory. Some women won't vote this year because--why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn't matter? It's raining?

Last week, I went to a sparsely attended screening of HBO's new movie "Iron Jawed Angels." It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have my say. I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder. All these years later, voter registration is still my passion. But the actual act of voting had become less personal for me, more rote. Frankly, voting often felt more like an obligation than a privilege. Sometimes it was inconvenient.

My friend Wendy, who is my age and studied women's history, saw the HBO movie, too. When she stopped by my desk to talk about it, she looked angry. She was -- with herself. "One thought kept coming back to me as I watched that movie," she said. "What would those women think of the way I use -- or don't use -- my right to vote? All of us take it for granted now, not just younger women, but those of us who did seek to learn." The right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her "all over again."

HBO will run the movie periodically before releasing it on video and DVD. I wish all history, social studies and government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum.

We are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order. It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. The doctor admonished the men: "Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity."

Please pass this on to all the women you know. We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so hard for by these very courageous women.

-Connie Schultz, The Plain Dealer, 1801 Superior Ave.,Cleveland, OH 44114, Cschultz@plaind.com, August 2004

Suffrage for Women - The Right to Vote
On August 26, 1920, the United States ratified the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote. The struggle for women's suffrage lasted for more than half a century.

resurrected wreck said...

Hi, L :)

resurrected wreck said...

I'm a bit headachy.

How are you guys?

Emerald said...

Hey, RW. How's it going?

Anonymous said...

Hey, Mayo.

I read an article today, an article I've yet to relocate, that pretty much made my heart explode.

It was about this little boy who was born without eyes and he couldn't straighten his arms or legs, and at about a year old, he began hammering out on the piano the nursery rhymes he was sung -- "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," "Mary Had A Little Lamb," you know, childhood staples.

Anyway, the story went on to say that the little boy grew up, joined his high school marching band with the help of his father. As he was assigned to a wheel chair for his disabilities, his father was the one to attend his practices and be his eyes. The little boy's father would push him into the proper position while the boy played his trumpet and attempted the choreography.

And I'm giving a really bad summary of the story, and I'm sorry about that. But, I guess what I wanted to say about it is this:

1. I think there are just some really special, special people on this earth. And even though they are disabled or not like the other kids or they can't jump high enough or they can't do this or they can't do that, they often have the biggest, warmest hearts. More importantly, I think they often have this insane ability to warm ours.

2. I believe music has a way of being a lot of people's saving grace. I believe it has the power to heal you in ways you never thought possible.

And I know I talk about it a lot, and I sometimes wish I had someone or something I believed in as much as this, but I don't. And this amazing, inspiring story that I can't find >_<, makes me believe in it that much more.

This is all I have.

Sorry for the ramble. I hope you're well, and that you soon give us the answer to your riddle before our heads and combined asses explode. And I'm pretty sure you don't want to have to clean that up. :)

Goodnight, Mayo.

SS,

I hope you're doing okay. Sending you lots of good things, not sure what, but they're good! I hope we get to see you back around sometime. Take care of yourself, dude.

Goodnight.

Well you're in your little room
and you're working on something good
but if it's really good
you're gonna need a bigger room
and when you're in the bigger room
you might not know what to do
you might have to think of
how you got started
sitting in your little room

Dude, I've turned my brain upside down and sideways trying to figure out your riddle. You have to give us the answer eventually.

Hope you feel better soon, RW. Retail therapy always works wonders.

I am doing a whole lot better today. The antibiotics are working really well, and I went somewhere besides the ER today! :) I have a new hairstyle now, a shorter bob, longer in the front than the back, and a little longer on one side, with layers added in the back and razor cut bangs. I needed something new.

TJ, let's see, you haven't drawn Phil and Monty yet. They may be a little peeved if you put them in dresses though...

Emerald said...

Goodnight, SDock.

Hey, BC. How are you doing? How's the bunny?

toujours said...

hey there bc. :)

hm...phil and monty, eh?

i don't remember what they are. wombats? that doesn't seem right. ergo's put wombats on my brain!

maybe would they like to be drawn as...pirates?

resurrected wreck said...

My hair is burgundy again. It was copper red for a while, but I tired of that quickly.

The cut is an A-line bob, very short at the back & longer on the right side.

resurrected wreck said...

Good to hear you're feeling better, by the way :)

Emerald said...

They are wombats, TJ. With little name tags on around their necks. The round individual letters you put on a string. They sit here on the computer table beside the mouse.

Emerald said...

Your hairstlye sounds beautiful, RW. My hair is a dark auburn right now, which is close to my original color, which is a really deep brown with a touch of red. I kept it light auburn for a while, but I don't know if I want to go back to it. My skin is so pale, but I have really dark brown eyes with green flecks. The stylist suggested streaks of both light and dark auburn. Not sure though.

resurrected wreck said...

Anyway, time for me to turn in. I'm going to try to sleep off my migraine.

Have a good night, all :)

resurrected wreck said...

My original hair colour is dark brown with a touch of red too!

resurrected wreck said...

Not that I've seen my original hair colour in about, oh, 25 years...

Kapunua, shut up already. No one cares. Can't you just look at something and enjoy it without finding something political in everything? And so what if women fought for the right to vote. We have the same right to NOT vote..... if we have to carpool or if it's raining or if we just don't want to! Your political ranting is the most annoying part of this whole blog.

Emerald said...

Aw, RW, my fellow monkey, we have matching hair!

Hope you feel better, and goodnight. Sweet dreams.

I made it back! Hi everyone!

I swear it was my goal to get here tonight right after work. I came home and right away I tried to get online. The computer is having major issues. So I go to my shitty ass phone. Takes forever and finally I post. Only to see a screen that says 'blogger is unavailable.' Nice.

Long story short, I got my laptop and now I'm at home. Yay!

...

Solly, I am going to email you, so check it tomorrow. I think you and your sister will have fun despite the fact that moving totally blows! Work your asses off, drink some beers (or water?!), and dance/sing in the car/truck. I wish you all the best.

Kapunua, best of luck on your manuscript. That is so exciting! Keep me posted.

Mustard, I've seen that kid you are talking about. Well not in person, but on tv. Him and his family touch my heart. I cried when I watched his story. Not because I felt sorry, only that I felt like there is so much to the human spirit. Beyond our comprehension. Thank you for reminding me.

....

Mayo, the only thing I keep coming to for your riddle is 'sex, drugs, and rock & roll.' Seriously. You better not be laughing. That's what is so cool about 'abstract' one can twist it into so many different scenerios and emotions.

Anyhoo, that's what I got.

I got more, but this is already too long. ;)

Anima, I am feeling much, much better! The antibiotics are working, and I have been out and about today. I picked up the paper to see what's going on this weekend around town. Maybe a movie, maybe a concert tomorrow, not sure yet.

Are you excited about the opening?

I agree Amyranth. No other could be Jack. Johnny owns that character.

L, that's great news. A concert tomorrow would be the perfect medicine. ;)

I'm nervous about the opening. Still doesn't seem real. A lot to undertake, so I'm kind of digging this little 'break.' Actually I should be doing stuff right now, but I wanted to hang with you guys. I've really missed everyone.

Vivienne said...

Hello guys, how is everyone?

Emerald said...

You're right, Amy. No one else could have played Jack.

I want to see the documentary "Gonzo" about Hunter S. Thompson. One of the people interviewed is Johnny. He became friends with Hunter when he played him in the movie 'Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas' and Johnny paid for the memorial in Colorado when they shot Hunter's ashes out of a cannon.

Anima, enjoy the break. It will be a whirlwind soon, but a good one. I can't wait to see some shows there! What do you have planned for the grand opening?

TJ, it's all about the pirates tonight. :)

Vivienne said...

Hi sweetie, say hi to J for me.

anima said...

L, I watched 'Gonzo.' It was damn interesting. And Johnny, ummm, well what can I say? Hunter and him seemed so comfortable. Johnny, a big fan of Hunter carried himself with such dignity and respect. You couldn't tell who admired whom more!

Emerald said...

BC, glad the bunny is doing well! They are fast, that's for sure. Pinkle came in the living room around 10:00 and looked at me like "Mum! Food! Now!" He hopped back into his cage after I gave him dinner.

toujours said...

cupcake! well hello there! how are you?

Vivienne said...

I'm feeling a bit harassed TJ, but how are you?

anima said...

Cupcake, I've missed you too! So awesome to see you!

L, I am sad to report, the venue is phase two. We are still waiting for that big loan to move into the adjacent space (the venue side). It is all good though. We are going to start building our cash flow and then start the build-out. We can still run the bar while working on the venue side, which is perfect. So as far as the opening act...nothing so far. Can't book until the venue is close to ready. :( Hopefully by the Fall we will start. Regardless, we got the space. The building owners want us to expand and have no plans to lease it to anyone else.

Emerald said...

I did, Cupcake. She is waving at you!

I know, Anima, they really got along great it seems. And Johnny had Hunter's speech and mannerisims down perfect in F&L. Both of them were born in Kentucky, and I think that helped bond them as well.

Harrassed? That's not good.

cupcake, how you feel is how you feel, and it's perfectly alright to be down or be so shaken up that you feel sick.

Amyranth said...

Cuppy, if it's a stroke, the best thing you can do right now is give him some aspirin. It will help to dissolve the clot that is causing the stroke.

...

Sorry, when I've been drinking I have tons of useless information come to the forefront.

here's the riddle, if you want to look at it, cupcake.

A dish full of looking glass milk
For me to lap up clean.
A taste that I acquired
During a late night dream.

I have three plain faults
For all of you to see.

Not for you to wallow in
But for which to seize.

Thank you guys, I really am so lucky to know you. I am so sorry i haven't been around lately, I don't even know how you all are.
Grandad will be ok because he's like my Father. Dad was never around, it was him. He let me wash his hair with sand when I was three. And i still need him, he knows, so whatever it is, he'll be ok. I'm talking to much now, be thankful you're not here, i just wouldn't shut up.

Cupcake, I'm terrible at riddles too. I think too much or not enough. I suck at multiple choice quiz questions too.

Here it is (I HOPE I'm looking at the right one)

I was playing hairdressers TJ, and obviously I wasn't very bright. I put pegs in his hair too. We always played the best games. I don't think there is anyone as patient as him.

J, he's really cold, well he feels really cold, he's shaking badly and dizzy. He's having trouble breathing and talking. I think he's in pain. He won't say anything much. He seems a bit confused. I think that's everything.

Amyranth said...

Cuppy, sounds like a stroke. Try and get some aspirin in him, it'll help, believe me.

Original Punk J said...

Ok Cupcake, it DOES sound like a stroke. I wouldn't give him an aspirin at the moment, though, because strokes aren't always caused by clots. Sometimes they're caused by a hemorrhage, which would be worsened by a blood thinner. Just try and keep him calm, sit with him, talk soothingly to him, don't move him. Got all that?

2. I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
3. The watchmen that go about the city found me: to whom I said, Saw ye him whom my soul loveth?
4. It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother's house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me.
5. I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.

2. Thy teeth are like a flock of sheep that are even shorn, which came up from the washing; whereof every one bear twins, and none is barren among them.

7. Thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee.

9. Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse; thou hast ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck.
10. How fair is thy love, my sister, my spouse! how much better is thy love than wine! and the smell of thine ointments than all spices!
11. Thy lips, O my spouse, drop as the honeycomb: honey and milk are under thy tongue; and the smell of thy garments is like the smell of Lebanon.
12. A garden inclosed is my sister, my spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain sealed.
13. Thy plants are an orchard of pomegranates, with pleasant fruits; camphire, with spikenard,
14. Spikenard and saffron; calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense; myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices:
15. A fountain of gardens, a well of living waters, and streams from Lebanon.
16. Awake, O north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out. Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits.

Chapter 5

1. I am come into my garden, my sister, my spouse: I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk: eat, O friends; drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved.
2. I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying, Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night.
3. I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on? I have washed my feet; how shall I defile them?
4. My beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were moved for him.
5. I rose up to open to my beloved; and my hands dropped with myrrh, and my fingers with sweet smelling myrrh, upon the handles of the lock.
6. I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.
7. The watchmen that went about the city found me, they smote me, they wounded me; the keepers of the walls took away my veil from me.
8. I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, if ye find my beloved, that ye tell him, that I am sick of love.
9. What is thy beloved more than another beloved, O thou fairest among women? what is thy beloved more than another beloved, that thou dost so charge us?
10. My beloved is white and ruddy, the chiefest among ten thousand.
11. His head is as the most fine gold, his locks are bushy, and black as a raven.
12. His eyes are as the eyes of doves by the rivers of waters, washed with milk, and fitly set.
13. His cheeks are as a bed of spices, as sweet flowers: his lips like lilies, dropping sweet smelling myrrh.
14. His hands are as gold rings set with the beryl: his belly is as bright ivory overlaid with sapphires.
15. His legs are as pillars of marble, set upon sockets of fine gold: his countenance is as Lebanon, excellent as the cedars.
16. His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.

Chapter 6

1. Whither is thy beloved gone, O thou fairest among women? whither is thy beloved turned aside? that we may seek him with thee.
2. My beloved is gone down into his garden, to the beds of spices, to feed in the gardens, and to gather lilies.
3. I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine: he feedeth among the lilies.
4. Thou art beautiful, O my love, as Tirzah, comely as Jerusalem, terrible as an army with banners.
5. Turn away thine eyes from me, for they have overcome me: thy hair is as a flock of goats that appear from Gilead.
6. Thy teeth are as a flock of sheep which go up from the washing, whereof every one beareth twins, and there is not one barren among them.
7. As a piece of a pomegranate are thy temples within thy locks.
8. There are threescore queens, and fourscore concubines, and virgins without number.
9. My dove, my undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her; yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.
10. Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?
11. I went down into the garden of nuts to see the fruits of the valley, and to see whether the vine flourished and the pomegranates budded.
12. Or ever I was aware, my soul made me like the chariots of Amminadib.
13. Return, return, O Shulamite; return, return, that we may look upon thee. What will ye see in the Shulamite? As it were the company of two armies.

Chapter 7

1. How beautiful are thy feet with shoes, O prince's daughter! the joints of thy thighs are like jewels, the work of the hands of a cunning workman.
2. Thy navel is like a round goblet, which wanteth not liquor: thy belly is like an heap of wheat set about with lilies.
3. Thy two breasts are like two young roes that are twins.
4. Thy neck is as a tower of ivory; thine eyes like the fishpools in Heshbon, by the gate of Bathrabbim: thy nose is as the tower of Lebanon which looketh toward Damascus.
5. Thine head upon thee is like Carmel, and the hair of thine head like purple; the king is held in the galleries.
6. How fair and how pleasant art thou, O love, for delights!
7. This thy stature is like to a palm tree, and thy breasts to clusters of grapes.
8. I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples;
9. And the roof of thy mouth like the best wine for my beloved, that goeth down sweetly, causing the lips of those that are asleep to speak.
10. I am my beloved's, and his desire is toward me.
11. Come, my beloved, let us go forth into the field; let us lodge in the villages.
12. Let us get up early to the vineyards; let us see if the vine flourish, whether the tender grape appear, and the pomegranates bud forth: there will I give thee my loves.
13. The mandrakes give a smell, and at our gates are all manner of pleasant fruits, new and old, which I have laid up for thee, O my beloved.

Chapter 8

1. O that thou wert as my brother, that sucked the breasts of my mother! when I should find thee without, I would kiss thee; yea, I should not be despised.
2. I would lead thee, and bring thee into my mother's house, who would instruct me: I would cause thee to drink of spiced wine of the juice of my pomegranate.
3. His left hand should be under my head, and his right hand should embrace me.
4. I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, until he please.
5. Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? I raised thee up under the apple tree: there thy mother brought thee forth: there she brought thee forth that bare thee.
6. Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.
7. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.
8. We have a little sister, and she hath no breasts: what shall we do for our sister in the day when she shall be spoken for?
9. If she be a wall, we will build upon her a palace of silver: and if she be a door, we will inclose her with boards of cedar.
10. I am a wall, and my breasts like towers: then was I in his eyes as one that found favour.
11. Solomon had a vineyard at Baalhamon; he let out the vineyard unto keepers; every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand pieces of silver.
12. My vineyard, which is mine, is before me: thou, O Solomon, must have a thousand, and those that keep the fruit thereof two hundred.
13. Thou that dwellest in the gardens, the companions hearken to thy voice: cause me to hear it.
14. Make haste, my beloved, and be thou like to a roe or to a young hart upon the mountains of spices.

If you can't find love in that, you aren't human.
