Construction paper world.

My inspiration arrives suddenly and from a memory that could have easily been abandoned because I was so consumed. So many exceptional moments could have been lost while I spent time in orbit.

Who would I be without that lost reality…and your face, your words, and your touch?

You sing karaoke
without knowing
the words.
Can’t read,
but can kill it
in a verse.
That sweet dance,

a remembrance.

With that in mind, I continue...

I am fascinated with the everyday condition. I watch and listen and I am prompted to return the favor with ink and fiber. I am captivated by the remote.

I am drawn to those who misguidedly assume they have little to offer. I admire those with the biggest hearts, and the quietest egos. And the vibrant, passionate, strong willed and self assured also encourage my craft.

The dark and pensive, the quiet and plotting, the spirited and confined, the naïve and unafraid…any combination a profit, all notions sublime.

The gravity of a book, a wise old woman, a tale told in three verses and a chorus repeated twice, the advice of those who know infinitely so much more, and the unexpected bit of hope that arrives when you say I love you.

p.s. paint your walls a deviceful shade of change and then you will know why.

TO MY DEAR WIFE:
During the past year I have tried to make love to you 365 times.
I have succeeded 36 times, which is an average of once every ten days.
The following is a list of why I did not succeed more often:

54 times the sheets were clean
17 times it was too late
49 times you were too tired
20 times it was too hot
15 times you pretended to be sleep
22 times you had a headache
17 times you were afraid of waking the baby
16 times you said you were too sore
12 times it was the wrong time of the month
19 times you had to get up early
9 times you said weren't in the mood
7 times you were sunburned
6 times you were watching the late show
5 times you didn't want to mess up your new hairdo
3 times you said the neighbors would hear us
9 times you said your mother would hear us

Of the 36 times I did succeed, the activity was not satisfactory because:

6 times you just lay there
8 times you reminded me there's a crack in the ceiling
4 times you told me to hurry up and get it over with
7 times I had to wake you and tell you I finished
1 time I was afraid I had hurt you because I felt you move

=====================================================

TO MY DEAR HUSBAND:
I think you have things a little confused. Here are the reasons you didn't get more than you did:

5 times you came home drunk and tried to screw the cat
36 times you did not come home at all
21 times you didn't cum
33 times you came too soon
19 times you went soft before you got in
38 times you worked too late
10 times you got cramps in your toes
29 times you had to get up early to play golf
2 times you were in a fight and someone kicked you in the balls
4 times you got it stuck in your zipper
3 times you had a cold and your nose was running
2 times you had a splinter in your finger
20 times you lost the notion after thinking about it all day
6 times you came in your pajamas while reading a dirty book
98 times you were too busy watching TV

Of the times we did get together:

The reason I laid still was because you missed and were screwing the sheets.

I wasn't talking about the crack in the ceiling, what I said was, "Would you prefer me on my back or kneeling?"

The time you felt me move was because you farted and I was trying to breathe.

Mayo,

Do you want to come out and talk music with me and Mustard? If you want to see 2 girls get giddy, all you have to do is mention music and our eyes light up.

Anonymous said...

Bah! Just posted in the wrong place.

Hello, Sdock!

Guess what?

I'm listening to "Imagine."

sdock10 said...

Okay, so I am getting ready to buy my very first Ipod...which one do I buy? How many GB and all that good shit?

Anonymous said...

If you want to see 2 girls get giddy, all you have to do is mention music and our eyes light up.

Didn't even see this, dude.

This place is beyond weird.

sdock10 said...

Niiiiiiiiiiiice, Mustard.

Guess what I heard this morning...which I found really weird because Todd was talking about this last night...

"While My Guitar Gently Weeps"

Anonymous said...

Depends on how many songs you want on that bad boy.

I had a 2GB, and it was not enough space for all of my shit. I'd get a bigger one.

sdock10 said...

Mustard, are you for real? You didn't know Mayo and I were talking about music?

This place really is weird.

I think I am in the mood for some White Stripes..."White Moon"

Anonymous said...

"While My Guitar Gently Weeps"

I love that song. One of my favorites. Right behind "Because."

sdock10 said...

How many songs does 2gb hold?

Anonymous said...

Um, I think mine maxed out at, like, 250 or something?

sdock10 said...

Fave line:

It's the truth and it don't make a noise.

sdock10 said...

Yeah, no, that's not enough....I must get a bigger one.

sdock10 said...

Fuck it, might as well quote the whole song:

White moon, white moon
Breaks open the tomb
Of a deserted cartoon that I wrote
Creature come, creature, creature
My own double feature
As I'm warming the bleachers at home

Well, my nose keeps on bleeding
'Cause it's rita I'm needing
I better call out a meeting of the boys
Of the boys
My friends are all dying
And death can't be lying
It's the truth and it don't make a noise

Oh Rita, oh Rita
If you lived in mesita
I would move you with the beat of a drum
And this picture is proof
That although you're aloof
You had the shiniest tooth 'neath the sun

Easy come, easy go
Be a star of the show
I'm giving up all I know to get more
To get more
Photograph the picture
Young grunt pin-up scripture
For locker-tagged memories of war

A mirage, this garage
And a photo montage
And a finger massage from the host
Good lord, good lord
The one I adore
And I cannot afford is a ghost
Is a ghost

Proto-social is the word
And the word is the bird
That flew through the herd in the snow
In the snow
Lemonade me, then grade me
Then deliver my baby
And if my friends all persuade me, I'll go

Blink, blink at me Rita
Don't you know I'm a bleeder?
And I promised I wouldn't lead her on
But she met me, then led me
And I ate what was fed me
'Til I purged every word in this song

Great song, great lyrics...just awesome.

Um, I will be getting the new Muse DVD though. That's the next purchase.

sdock10 said...

I do.

sdock did you feel the burn?

about the iPod I have a 2gb iRiver and as I just use it in the car and such I reduced the song quality to I think 94 kbs or something, you really can't tell the difference and it holds a lot more.
I got an iRiver as it doesn't have heaps of extras, like video or photos as I just don't use it

sdock10 said...

I bet Fimble is not here because she has the sugarfarts from eating too many sweets today.

neither did I there are a lot of types out there, go to a place with good assistants who now stuff and tell them what you need.
I just looked mine has about 400 songs, it depends on the file you use, mp3 takes less space than wav files but if you reduce the bit rate they take up less space, like 25mb per cd instead of 35gb

(and I didn't know all this until a week ago! So I reripped my cds and fitted heaps more on)

elena said...

Thank you sdock...

Now I can't work cause I can't go against what you say!!!

Hey Fimble

Anonymous said...

Hey Fimble!

Yeah, I haven't quite figured out on iTunes how to kill all of that junk they put on there, not that I want to, because digital shit takes a lot out anyway, but it's whatever.

It takes out unecessary noise, and therefore, takes up less space on the ole iPod. Pretty neat.

sdock10 said...

Oh, okay....I will have to check out what Wally World has...and maybe I can get the car adapter thing so I can play it in my vehicle.

Coming home from Kung Fu tonight, I listened to MUSE and like, my hair was blowing back. Stockholm Syndrome pretty much owns every quark that makes up my being.

There is so much I could say about every aspect of that song, but I need to take a shower first.

Thank you, firstly Splash and then the rest of you who were pimping them out to me.

ergoproxy said...

hI fim & mustard

an iRiver is just another type of mp3 player. It doesn't have to use iTunes, plus it doesn't synch to just one computer, something iPods will do, which I would find annoying.
They have really good sound reproduction and mine has a different hard drive memory thingy which is less likely to get damaged than an iPod - or something

Elena, there is a song in the Hula circles that is often considered to be a kind of charm for women in situations like the one you often describe here. It’s called “Ke Alaula,” which means “The Dawn” or more appropriately, “the path of fire,” implying that the rising sun burns an eastern path, one that you can follow.

In Hula circles, women find that this song comes into their life at a time of great change. All of them were in their 40’s and had just reached some kind of unhappy impasse, a place where they were stuck in the dark, alone. One woman’s husband left her. One woman, her last child had just moved out of the house. And the third found her husband hanging by his neck in the garage. So each of them were in a really dark place--some obviously much more than others--when this song came into their lives.
Looking for something to liven up their lives, they tried out a Hula class. And in each case, this song was just there, like a gift.

Of course I’m not telling you to go out and take a Hula class. But these women often report that this song was a kind of charm for them, and that after it had been given to them, they found light in their lives in places they didn’t expect.

In Hawaiian culture, mele and language have powers to change lives. Like I’ve said before: I ka ‘olelo ka make, i ka olelo ke ola - “In words there is death, in words there is life.”

Please always remember that life doesn’t stagnate; it is cyclic. Po and ’au, night and day, two sides of the same coin, a coin we all carry. When your children grow and leave you alone on Easter, remember that one day there will probably be grandchildren on Easter. And then you will have construction paper flowers again.

A Kumu Hula once gave us, her class, a mele as a gift. She said that the song had opened doors for her in ways she hadn’t expected and she hoped it would do the same for us. She said these words, which I’m telling to you now: Where there was darkness, may there be light.

Here’s hoping that it works for you, Elena, and for everyone else who feels stuck and needs a charm (although it mostly made me think of you because your situation reminds me of those of the women that I met) : Ke Alaula by the Makaha Sons. You have to listen for it to work.

I can’t find an actual web page with the lyrics and translation, so I will post them here:

E Kumuola, e ku'u tutu,
Poha mai ka 'onohi 'ula,
Wehi 'ia ke alaula,
Mai ka mole, ke kikowaena,

Ha'alulu ke kumu honua,
Haku 'iku'i i ka' 'aina nei,
Wehe 'ia ke alaula,
Hoaka 'O Kamawaipolani,

Hane'ene'e hele i kai.
'Oni me ka muliwai 'ola,
Wehi 'ia ke alaula,
Uhi pono i ke ea,

Puana ke ha'ina,
Ho'okukaulani i hei kapu,
Wehe 'ia ke alaula,
No nahanauna nei.
-------------------------------------
Oh, Kumuola, My tutu,
Burst with rays of fire,
Opened a flaming pathway
From the source, the center

the foundation trembled,
echoed throughout the land
opened a stream of life
Appeared Kamawaipolani

moving toward the sea,
onward like a living river
opened a seaward path
enveloped in lifes' breath

the story is told,
restore this sacred domain
opened the path of life
for the generations of this land

The "dancing" pic from the reception was cute. Poor thing. I think he's more the "throw yourself on the floor" dancer than traditional steps!

OH MY GOSH! Elena, that would be awesome if you did. I could hook you up with an email list where you could find a class close to you if you are really interested.

Sometimes watching a hula dancer makes me go all O_O.

It's all fluid and shit, and I never know how they can make their bones and muscles go like that.

Waiting for the Jackson 5 reunion still. How the hell long does it take? Srsly.

Original Punk J said...

Doing good, SDock. Hope the day went well at work. Well, as much as any work day can. :)

One of my bunnies is molting, so I have been brushing him and pulling fur off of him today. I think I have enough to create a small hamster.

L.

Original Punk J said...

Doing really well, Princess. Aside from being covered earlier in white fur.

Ah, normal day then, SDock. :)

Hello, Mustard. How's it going?

Elena, did you enjoy your birthday?

And Princess, J. and I ordered our Leathermouth t-shirts the other day, plus some buttons and patches. Woo-Hoo!

When we met Henry Rollins earlier this month we talked up Leathermouth to him, and he said he would check out their MySpace.

L.

Original Punk J said...

Ergo, how's it going. Sorry, I nearly missed you! Fishing today, or any snake mishaps?

L.

Solly, there sure are.

Okay hang on, lemme get the Hula link. It's a huge international mailing list with connections all over the world; I started it about eight years ago.

By the way, I AM THE BOSS OF IT! ;D

Tito Jackson ( I think it is ) is in Australia -is he the one always wears the bowler hat?
he was on this really funny music quiz show, and the guy from Toto who actually played all the guitar of Beat It except for the solo

Original Punk J said...

Whatcha get, Elena? That you can talk about? :)

L.

ergoproxy said...

Oh elena how could I forget to ask - what did you get for your birthday?

Original Punk J said...

Smoke,

We would really like to get the S//C shirts too.

I have a Harry Potter hoodie (yeah, I know, HP nerd) but I got a solid black hoodie for Christmas to put what I wanted on it. I checked the Skeleton Crew site in Jan. and the patches were sold out, I couldn't find any Ramones, Sex Pistols or Misfits patches either!

Finally I found a Misfits patch, and a skull sheild to put on each arm. I just found the Ramones patch and now I have the S//C patches coming. The buttons I have on the front are My Chem, Ramones, Misfits, The Clash, and Johnny Cash flipping the bird!

so if there are gaps between me commenting it's because I am sucessfully avoiding refreshing the page!

NUTS, it didn't post. Okay here we go.

The hula mailing list and even better, and a helluva a lot quicker, halau listings. Those are just halau though, actual Hula schools. Often you can find a smaller group closer to home by asking around. The network is very tightly knit and usually not very competitive, at least on the mainland. THat is by no means a complete list; it just lists the really big schools. They could get you in touch with something smaller and closer though. :)

Original Punk J said...

Sounds like a good day, Elena!

Why did it originate, or was it just another form of dancing?

Do certain hula dances hold special meanings?

My answer is WAY TOO LONG and I have to truncate it a little. Hang on.

sdock10 said...

Mayo,

How are you, my friend? I hope you are well and happy. Me? I'm okay.

Crazy days, Mayo...crazy fucking days. And they are going by so fast..so fast that I sometimes feel like I forget to breathe. Holding my breath and waiting...5 mins, 5 hours, 5 days, and 5 years have passed me by.

Let borrow me some words tonight from Jennifer Nettles to help explain how I feel:

Well, I move around incessantly
But I long for something sedentary
Not long enough to stagnate
Not long enough to gel
But I can't keep still
And I know just why
I'm afraid I might get satisfied
And what would then become of all this anger that I sell
Oh I'd like to think that maybe
It's more than smoke and mirrors baby
To keep myself from feeling oh so small
But the girl behind the curtain hides so you can't see her hurting
And then I turn and watch the curtain fall
Yeah, then I go and make a curtain call
Oh I know love ain't always a fairy tale
But I tell you baby it's just as well
A heart must show the tears
For it to recognize the laughter
And my heart keeps laughing most of the time

Feel me?

Mayo, Mustard and I were talking about music earlier and we would love it if maybe you could share some of your favorite songs with us....or maybe what's your ipod top 5. You might introduce us to someone we have never listened to before. What an amazing gift music can be! It has the power to take you anywhere you want to go and feel anything you want to feel.

Damn, I love it. There is no other feeling like it in the world.

I feel the need to apologize to you one more time for all the fucking craziness happening around here. It's all about respect, Mayo. Respect for you, respect for ourselves, and respect for each other. Really it's very simple.

Well, I am off to bed for the night. Still Tylenol PM free. YAY me!

I wish you silly dreams, Mayo. The kind that make no sense and leave you laughing, shaking your head, and going what the fuck did I eat before I went to sleep!!

Niiiiiiiiiiice!

Love to YOU Always,
S

p.s. Good Golly Fucking Marbles!

A "brief" (lol) explanation and history of Hula.

Modern hula is called ‘auana, which means “to wander,” that’s because of the flowing movements you see. Here you would wear a typical long dress, a nice lei etc. although informally you can pretty much just wear anything. At a ho’ike, an informal Hula show, it’s not unusual for dancers to get up on stage in jeans and a t shirt. (There are pictures of me dancing at Disney’s Polynesian resort at an informal show, indeed up on the stage in jeans, a t shirt and a hoodie that reads, “HULA GIRL” in bright pink letters. O_O )

People often get Hula mixed up with Tahitian. Tahitian is the one with the ‘otea bark skirts and sometimes coconut bras, the ‘i’i’s (they look like pom poms but are made out of bark shavings,) and the quickly rotating hips. (Note: the ‘otea bark skirt weighs about ten pounds, so when you see us up there shaking it like that, it is not easy! Also, ‘otea bark gives me a rash on the top of my butt. TMI.)

While Tahitian doesn’t have to have a meaning and is just done for the movement, every Hula has a meaning. In fact it’s considered rude to do a Hula where there are no lyrics, because then the movements become meaningless. You can’t have Hula without mele. The job of the hula dancer is to bring the meaning to life by use of body language; Hula is really just ancient sign language. The hands tell the story.

Historically, Hula is about as ancient as it gets. Original hula is called “Kahiko” which means ancient, and those dances are usually totally hardcore. The costume is different from what you usually think of when you think “hula.” You wear a pa’u skirt and matching top. The top varies: if you’re doing Victorian kahiko you actually wear a Victorian top to go with it.

The history of Hawai’i is about the saddest thing ever. King Kamehameha first united the islands (it was brutal and bloody: Hawai’i is not all coconuts and grass shacks and fishing,) and after that there was a peace for a while, until the Christian missionaries came. The missionaries objected to the way the natives were dressed, to begin with (also of note: some people think that Hula is “sexy” because the clothes sometimes reveal more than the western eye is used to, but in truth it is just hte opposite. Remember the natives were mostly naked back then, and you would get dressed in order to dance.) They also objected to the old gods.

The missionaries realized that the Hula was the Hawaiian people’s way of talking to, and about their gods, so once they had enough influence on the islands, and had amassed enough force, they banned the Hula for many years.

It was King Kalakaua who finally managed to overturn the ban on Hula. There are so many mele for him, and so many hulas in honor of Kalakaua, in thanks for returning the Hula.

Following the missionaries, more Americans came to Hawai’i, most notably the Dole family. (Yes, THAT Dole, like the fruit juice.) They were the ones who politically seized Hawai’i from the Natives. America itself originally wasn’t too interested, but it started to get out of hand when the Doles captured the Hawaiian queen Liliu’okalani, Kalakaua’s sister, who became queen after his death. Even though the Hawaiians fought for her return--they did not want annexation--and even though the US president demanded that the Doles return her to her palace, the Doles refused to step aside, and they threatened to continue the war against the Natives unless everyone accepted this. Eventually Queen Lili said that she would rather step down than see her people slaughtered. She had no choice. She spent the rest of her life in America mainland, trying to overturn the annexation, which obviously still has not happened.

She also wrote the famous song “Aloha ‘oe.” That is usually sung as a goodbye to a loved one, but the undertone of it is that Liliuokalani knew that she was saying good bye to her people’s culture.

Well the point of that story is that even though the Hula was reinstated, teachers and dancers still had to be very careful of what they said and the subjects of their dance, because they were under American rule now. Hawaiian poetry had always been subtle, and they always employed the kauna, the double meaning, but now they had to make sure they kept it subtle under the threat of arrest.

In the 20’s eventually many sailors made their way to this “new paradise” and decided to stay there. These were mostly American, Japanese, Chinese and German. (That’s why the most famous Hula teachers in the world today have names like Keali’i Reichel, Sonny Ching, Chinky Mahoe, Keith Awai, etc.) The Americas fell in love with the Hula, but you know how Americans get, they co-opt and water down everything they get their hands on. This led to stuff like cheesey grass skirts, coconut bras, and the cellophane “grass” skirt. Like it or not, those are actually cultural aspects of the Hula and are still performed today.

This answer is WAY too long. O_O

There’s more but I cut most of it out. ^_^

Good night, SDock!

Wendy, you are right! J. is on the couch! And the phone.

Did you get to "play misty" last night?
