It was the moment when he had the light that it worked.

So you let that go with little debate.
Perhaps it was inserted too late.
Could you please go back in time
just a minute and revisit the rhyme?

The store remains locked.
But the shelves are carefully stocked
with reasons there for all to see.
You are oh so very close to me.

p.s. trust that I try to reflect back to you what you have given to me.

You can come visit the Deep South with us anytime, Sis. It would be WAY cool.

I have to say I find them all attractive in some way. Gerard because he is gorgeous and touched in the head. And Sdock10 says I tend to act all diva-ish like him sometimes (as if, I'm gonna sharpie a message to her tomorrow and make her walk around town with me). Frank because, well it's Frank. He is super sexy and he is beautiful inside and out. He's got the passion and it shows everytime he plays. Ray and Bob because they are like hard-working manly men. And Mikey, that boy has got features like a damn GQ model. And who would have thunk it? I swear to God, he's got cheekbones to die for. Alicia, you got one fine ass husband.

Frank is still my favorite. Tattoos are just my thing.

Well, it's getting late in GA.

Night everyone.

Right, so our little "rhyme" there. I'm a fan of poetry (though I admit, I'm not fond of this one,) so I wouldn't mind a crack at it, even with the teeny bit of "context" (LOL) that Mayo gave us.

Mayo identifies as the man in the poem and identifies us as the prophet. But there are four characters in that poem: the man, the prophet, the "masses" and the narrator.

Why didn't Mayo choose to identify with the narrator instead? I guess it's because "the man" is the one surrounded by thousands, those masses who will give and give and then "poison the water." it doesn't take a genius to figure out that this is the typical dichotomy of Speaker and Listener in their most extreme: the crucified celebrity? Yeah, yeah. :/

Over the screams of fatalism,
you can hear his voice
yelling
to his followers to burn it.
"Burn it
to the ground."
He is asking them to follow
their hearts
to live the life
of their Heroes.

"I'm just a man, I'm not a hero," uh huh, and Jesus saying "I'm just a man, you can also do what I do."

Scream older and wiser, still filled with resentment
We get it, we get it

/TBS reference.

I hear him cry out "your
survival will depend on
your willingness to fight."

That's what the man--the one on stage here (not the narrator)--is telling to the masses.

But this isn't news to us; I'm a little surprised that we aren't cast as that useless and pawing crowd in this case of persecution mania.

The Prophet in this poem doesn't do a hell of a lot.

Anonymous said...

In that poem, "He" has too much control. Control, control, control.

I agree Elena! Hey, about my name Star. My real name is Dawn, but, I wish my name was more exotic like Star. Or Persephone. But that would be too long to type.

I love the name Persephone. I used to want to name my first daughter Astraea, until I realized that she'd never be able to spell it, much less pronounce it.

Amyranth comes from a series of books, called Sweep. It's a series based on the Wiccan religion, and one of the covens is named Amyranth. When I looked it up I found out it's actually spelled Amaranth, and it's a type of flower. The first hit I got was on a plant sometimes called "Love-Lies-Bleeding". Being young and slightly depressed over an ex-boyfriend at the time, I snapped it up, and have been using it almost exclusively ever since.

-Amyranth, or Amaranth as anon616 pointed out.

yep, creeeee-pee.
the final message of the poem is positive, if you look at it alone, but when you look at it along with the opening bits...

Since we're discussing our blog names: Resurrected Wreck is from the movie Impromptu (about the relationship between Chopin and the author George Sand). It's always been one of my faves. There's a line in the movie where George Sand describes herself as a resurrected wreck. I liked it, so I used it here. If I were to choose anything else, it would most likely be a line from an Alphaville song (where "Hello Junkie Sweetheart", the subtitle of my blog, comes from).

Incidentally, Joseph Mayo Wristen is a self published poet which means that he could not shop his work out to any real publications. Looks like our Mayo googled "Mayo" or something and came up with this guy.

He is not well-known or anything. Also, by the way, the guy is kind of a hack. His poems are full of inanities and mistakes in structure. I'm not talking about the difference between sturctured verse and free-form, but actual sentence structure and verb-noun agreement.

Any of us could write better stuff than that on a whim.

Just a little FYI.

RW, that's my favorite after Lady Jane.

Not sure about that. I have trouble writing grocery lists.

RW, that's my favorite after Lady Jane.

Helena Bonham-Carter plays Lady Jane in that one, yes?

I mean seriously:

i am writing this poem to leave to you the message of my love
to share with you how i felt then - about how i feel now
to make my pledge to you
that there is nothing i wouldn't do to see your dreams come true

if they could only see what's happening here
feel the world changing around them
then maybe they too
could understand the love you have and why I adore you so much

Michele

Come on, that's like something a drunken apologetic hack would leave on the refrigerator in his trailer after an argument with his woman. :/

"To leave you the message of my love?" Who are you, Ted Theodore Logan? "I bring you a message of love. From myself!"

I hate banal poetry.

I am not sure what is my inspiration for my name started. I just made it up as soon as I created my blog, although it may be based on a Buffy video game ^_^

Yes, yes, RW!

Do any of you here have favorite poems? If so why? I've got a ton of fvorites, but there are two that I know by heart. I wonder if I could write them out here by memory. I'll give it a whirl, but don't crucify me if I get them wrong. ^_^

As kingfishers catch fire
dragonflies draw flame
as tumbled over rim in roundy wells,
stones ring.

As each tucked string tells,
each hung bell's bow swung finds tongue to fling out broad its name,

Each mortal thing does one thing and the same:
Deals out that being indoors each one dwells,
selves,
goes itsef.

Myself it speaks and spells,
crying "What I do is me! For that I came!"

One of my favorite poets, another Gerard: Gerard Manley Hopkins. I hope I got that all right.

Kapunua, here is one of my favorites:

Success

To laugh often and much;

To win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children;

To earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends;

To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;

To leave the world a bit better, whether by
a healthy child, a garden patch
or a redeemed social condition;

To know even one life has breathed
easier because you have lived;

This is to have succeeded.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

My other favorite one goes like this:

Much madness is divinest sense
to a discerning eye --
much sense, the starkest madness.

'Tis the majority, in this, as all, prevails ---

assent, and you are sane.

Demur, you're straightway dangerous,
and handled with a chain.

Emily Dickenson. Ahhh, that is totally one of my favorite poems ever. ^_^

I'd have to say my alltime favorite is T.S. Elliot's The Wasteland but that is much too long to quote.

But my favorite part of it went like this:

When lovely woman stoops to folly,
and paces around her room again, alone,
She smooths her hair with automatic hand
and puts another record on the gramophone.

Anonymous said...

Nice one, Jennicula!

I like e.e.cummings, too. Lemme see if I can remember a bit of my favorite by him, though I can't remember what it was called. Hmm, lemme see if I can remember it...

OH! I remember what it was called! Anyone lived in a pretty how town.

It was like,

Anyone lived in a pretty how town
With up so floating many bells down,
Spring, summer, autumn, winter
He danced his didn't
He sang his did.

Women and men both little and small
Cared for Anyone not at all
They sowed their isn't, they reaped their same,
Sun, Moon, Stars, Rain.

The rest of it was the bomb, now I have to look for it.

K, Emily was so touched in the head. She still boggles my mind.

Percy Bysshe Shelley. 1792–1822

The Indian Serenade

I arise from dreams of thee
In the first sweet sleep of night,
When the winds are breathing low,
And the stars are shining bright.
I arise from dreams of thee, 5
And a spirit in my feet
Hath led me—who knows how?
To thy chamber window, Sweet!

The wandering airs they faint
On the dark, the silent stream— 10
And the champak's odours [pine]
Like sweet thoughts in a dream;
The nightingale's complaint,
It dies upon her heart,
As I must on thine, 15
O belovèd as thou art!

O lift me from the grass!
I die! I faint! I fail!
Let thy love in kisses rain
On my lips and eyelids pale. 20
My cheek is cold and white, alas!
My heart beats loud and fast:
O press it to thine own again,
Where it will break at last!

Anonymous said...

I looked it up; my mistake, it is actually called "everyone lived in a pretty how town."

everyone lived in a pretty how town
by e. e. cummings

anyone lived in a pretty how town

(with up so floating many bells down)

spring summer autumn winter

he sang his didn't he danced his did.

Women and men (both little and small)

cared for anyone not at all

they sowed their isn't they reaped their same

sun moon stars rain

children guessed (but only a few

and down they forgot as up they grew

autumn winter spring summer)

that noone loved him more by more

when by now and tree by leaf

she laughed his joy she cried his grief

bird by snow and stir by still

anyone's any was all to her

someones married their everyones

laughed their cryings and did their dance

(sleep wake hope and then)

they said their nevers they slept their dream

stars rain sun moon

(and only the snow can begin to explain

how children are apt to forget to remember

with up so floating many bells down)

one day anyone died i guess

(and noone stooped to kiss his face)

busy folk buried them side by side

little by little and was by was

all by all and deep by deep

and more by more they dream their sleep

noone and anyone

earth by april wish by spirit and if by yes.

Women and men (both dong and ding)

summer autumn winter spring

reaped their sowing and went their came

sun moon stars rain

Not a classic poem, but I really love the verse at the end of the movie The Company Of Wolves:

Little girl, this seems to say
Never stop along your way
Never trust a stranger friend
No one knows how it will end

As you're pretty, so be wise
Wolves may lurk in every guise
Now, as then, tis simple truth
Sweetest tongue has sharpest tooth

He is almost a God, a man beside you
enthralled by your talk, by your laughter.
Watching makes my heart beat fast
because, seeing little, I imagine much.
You put a fire in my cheeks.
Speech won't come. My ears ring.
Blind to all others, I sweat and I stammer.
I am a trembling thing, like grass,
an inch from dying.

So poor I've nothing to lose, I must gamble...

- Sappho (6th century, BCE)

Faint thunder drifts....
beneath the willow.

rain upon the pool.
The sound of rain,
and rain again from lotus leaves.
The western eaves of this small place
cut through the rainbow.
I leaned on the rail and waited
for the moon to bloom.
A swallow flew and perched
to peer in at the ridgepole.
The moon, jade hook,
hung from the curtain rod.
No waves on water,
still waves, the wrinkles of the coverlet.
Behind the crystal screen, two pillows:
on one, a hairpin fell.

- Ou-yang Hsiu (1007-1072)

If anyone asks you,
how the perfect satisfaction
of all our sexual wanting
will look, lift your face
and say,
Like This

When someone mentions the gracefulness
of the nightsky, climb up on the roof
and dance and say,
Like This?

If anyone wans to know what "spirit" is,
or what "God's Fragrance" means,
lean your head toward him or her.
Keep your face there close,
Like this.

When someone quotes the old poetic image
about clouds gradually uncovering the moon,
slowly loosen knot by knot the strings
of your robe.
Like this?

If anyone wonders how Jesus raises the dead,
don't try to explain the miracle.
Kiss me on the lips.
Like this, like this.

When someone asks what it means
to "die for love", point:
Here.

If someone asks how tall I am, frown
and measure with your fingers the space
between the creases on your forehead.
This tall.

The soul sometimes leaves the body, then returns.
When someone doesn't believe that,
walk back into my house.
Like this.

When lovers moan,
they're telling our story.
Like this.

I am a sky where spirits live.
Stare into this deepening blue,
while the breeze says a secret.
Like this.

- Jelaluddin Rumi (1207-1273)

-Amyranth is a romantic.

that emily dickenson made me smile -- chains, indeed.

my most recent favorite is this:

Night is my sister, and how deep in love,
How drowned in love and weedily washed ashore,
There to be fretted by the drag and shove
At the tide's edge, I lie - these things and more:
Whose arm alone between me and the sand,
Whose voice alone, whose pitiful breath brought near,
Could thaw these nostrils and unlock this hand,
She could advise you, should you care to hear.
Small chance, however, in a stroem so black,
A man will leave his friendly fire and snug
For a drowned woman's sake, and bring her back
To drip and scatter shells upon the rug.
No one but Night, with tears on her dark face,
Watches beside me in this windy place.

edna st. vincent millay. a bit depressing, subject-wise, but the language of it makes me giddy.

I don't know anyone who doesn't like Maya Angelou's "Phenomenal Woman."

Now you understand
why my head's not bowed,
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.

When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say:
It's in the click of my heels,
the bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
the need for my care,
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally,
phenomenal woman.

Catalogue

Cats sleep fat and walk thin.
Cats, when they sleep, slump;
When they wake, pull in -
And where the plump's been
There's skin.
Cats walk thin.
Cats wait in a lump,
Jump in a streak.
Cats, when they jump, are sleek
As a grape slipping its skin-
They have technique.
Oh, cats don't creak.
They sneak.

Cats sleep fat.
They spread comfort beneath them
Like a good mat,
As if they picked the place
And then sat.
You walk around one
As if he were City Hall
After that.

If male,
A cat is apt to sing upon a major scale:
This concert is for everybody, this
Is wholesale.
For a baton, he wields a tail.

(he is also found,
When happy, to resound
With an enclosed and private sound.)

A cat condenses.
He pulls in his tail to go under bridges,
And himself to go under fences.
Cats fit
In any box or kit;
And if a large pumpkin grew under one,
He could arch over it.

When everyone else is just ready to go out,
The cat is just ready to come in,
He's not where he's been.
Cats sleep fat and walk thin.
